Zermatt

Zermatt has never allowed cars, and every arrangement in the valley follows from that. Private vehicles stop at Täsch, 5 km short of the village, where a 2,100-space covered terminal sits under the station and a shuttle train runs the last 12 minutes every 20 minutes from before six in the morning until late. Drive past it and the police fine you on the spot. Inside the village nothing runs on petrol: small electric taxis, two free electric bus lines, hotel porters with electric trolleys, and mostly walking, because the place is about twenty minutes end to end. Going up is also public transport rather than sightseeing – the Gornergrat rack railway, the Sunnegga funicular and the gondola chain to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise are how you reach the hamlets, the trailheads and, over the ridge, Italy. There is one road and one railway into the valley, both of them under the same avalanche paths and the same river, and when either goes, Zermatt is cut off entirely.

How transport works here

8 ways of moving, each with its rule

We confirmed eight ways of moving to, from or around Zermatt: five by rail and cable, one hired or on demand, one by road and one by air, from 26 sources. Two of them run only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. Two need a phone call or a message before you turn up.

The fares were seen in 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. Two fares carry no year, because they could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 5 of the 8 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 22 September 2026, and ends with ten things we could not confirm.

Täsch–Zermatt shuttle train and the Matterhorn Terminal

Matterhorn Terminal Täsch to Zermatt station, 5 km up the valley

Drive the valley road from Visp through St. Niklaus and Randa; Täsch is where it stops for you. The terminal building holds the car park and the station platforms under one roof, so you park, take a luggage trolley from a stand within 30 m of your space, wheel it onto the shuttle and off again on the forecourt at Zermatt. There are 2,100 covered spaces at the terminal and over 1,000 more with private operators, taxi firms and hotels in the village. Trolleys are free with a CHF 5 deposit. Ticket machines on the concourse sell shuttle, Gornergrat and lift tickets; there is also a staffed counter, lockers, a shop and free wifi. Book a terminal parking space online up to the day before; if you are arriving today you take a ticket at the barrier. Maximum vehicle height is 2.30 m. If you drive past Täsch into Zermatt you will be stopped and fined on the spot, and the police are not interested in your having missed the sign.

Train from Visp and the Swiss network, and the Glacier Express

Visp to Zermatt via Stalden-Saas, St. Niklaus, Randa and Täsch; Glacier Express from Zermatt to St. Moritz via Brig, Andermatt and Chur

This is the way most people arrive and it is simpler than the car. Visp is on the main line under the Lötschberg and the Simplon, so you change there off an InterCity from Bern, Basel or Geneva and the metre-gauge Matterhorn Gotthard train takes you up the Mattertal. Zurich airport to Zermatt is about three and a half hours, Geneva or Basel about four. Trains terminate on the forecourt at Zermatt station, opposite the Gornergrat station. The Glacier Express is a scheduled train on the same network rather than a tour: it starts and ends at Zermatt, takes most of a day to St. Moritz, and a seat reservation is compulsory even if you hold a rail pass. Book it well ahead, since reservations open about six months out and fill in summer.

When
Half-hourly Visp to Zermatt through the day. Glacier Express runs to a seasonal timetable, typically one or two trains a day each way
Takes
About 1 hour 10 minutes Visp to Zermatt; about 8 hours Zermatt to St. Moritz on the Glacier Express
Fare 2026
Glacier Express Zermatt to St. Moritz: CHF 54 mandatory seat reservation plus a CHF 159 second-class ticket, CHF 213 in total. Children under 6 free, 6 to 16 half price, but the reservation is charged for everyone and is not covered by travel cards (2026)

SeasonYear-round. The Glacier Express does not run during the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn's autumn maintenance break. BookingOrdinary trains need no reservation. Glacier Express reservations are mandatory and open about six months ahead. Run byMatterhorn Gotthard Bahn, with SBB to Visp; Glacier Express is run jointly by Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn and Rhaetian Railway.

03
rack railway

Gornergrat rack railway

Zermatt to Findelbach, Riffelalp, Riffelberg, Rotenboden and Gornergrat at 3,089 m

Its own station stands directly opposite the main railway station, with separate ticket windows and machines. It is the only mechanical way to reach the Riffelalp and Riffelberg hotels and the high trailheads on that side of the valley, so it is transport as much as a viewpoint, and the standard walk is up by train and down on foot. Tickets are also sold at Täsch and through the Matterhorn app. Be aware of the maintenance shutdown: in 2026 the line closes entirely from 2 to 14 November for construction work.

When
Every 24 minutes from 08:00 in summer, with a first train from Zermatt at 07:00 and extra trains before 08:00 and after 17:00. Every 48 minutes in the late-autumn shoulder, first train 07:00 weekdays
Takes
About 33 minutes Zermatt to Gornergrat
Fare 2026
Zermatt to Gornergrat CHF 66 one way, CHF 132 return. Riffelberg CHF 42 / CHF 84, Riffelalp CHF 29 / CHF 58. The Gornergrat round trip combining the Furi gondola one way and the rack railway the other is from CHF 113 and includes the local bus (2026)

SeasonYear-round except the November maintenance closure, 2 to 14 November 2026. BookingBuy online, in the Matterhorn app or at the station. No reservation needed. Run byGornergrat Bahn, part of Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn.

04
cable car

Sunnegga funicular and the gondola chain to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

Zermatt to Sunnegga, Blauherd and Rothorn on the east side; Zermatt to Furi, Schwarzsee, Trockener Steg and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at 3,883 m on the west, with the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing continuing to Testa Grigia and Cervinia in Italy

The Sunnegga funicular runs underground from a station on the far side of the village from the main railway station; follow the signs from the Kirchbrücke. The gondola chain starts at the Matterhorn Express station at the south end of the village, which is where the green e-bus line ends. Both are ordinary transport for the hamlets and trailheads above the valley: Findeln, the Leisee, Furi and Schwarzsee are reached this way and no other. The Matterhorn Alpine Crossing is the only way to cross into Italy from Zermatt without walking, running Zermatt to Cervinia via the Glacier Ride cable car and Testa Grigia; it is a scheduled border crossing, so carry a passport. Tickets include the local bus. Prices are dynamic and cheaper booked ahead online or in the Matterhorn app.

When
Continuous through operating hours, which change with the season and the weather; the top sections close in high wind
Takes
4.5 minutes Zermatt to Sunnegga; about 40 minutes Zermatt to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise including changes; about 1 hour 50 minutes Zermatt to Cervinia
Fare 2026
Sunnegga from CHF 19.00. Matterhorn Glacier Paradise return from CHF 120.00. Matterhorn Alpine Crossing Zermatt to Cervinia from CHF 147.50. A three-day-plus lift pass covering Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, Rothorn, Schwarzsee, Gornergrat, the Randa–Täsch–Zermatt trains and the e-buses is also sold at every ticket office (2026)

SeasonYear-round on the main sections. Individual stages close for maintenance in the shoulder seasons and shut in storms. BookingOnline, in the Matterhorn app or at any ticket office. Reduced tickets need a SwissPass card shown at the desk. Run byZermatt Bergbahnen AG.

Zermatt to Saas-Fee

Zermatt to Visp or Stalden-Saas by train, then PostBus up the Saas valley to Saas-Fee

The two car-free resorts are about 30 km apart as the crow flies with no road between them, so the link is down one valley and up the next. Take the Matterhorn Gotthard train towards Visp and change to the PostBus; Stalden-Saas is the shorter change but Visp has the more frequent service. Buses leave from the station forecourt and you can buy from the driver or have it written into a through train ticket. Saas-Fee is also car-free, with a large car park at the village entrance, and the bus terminal is central enough to walk from. Friday evenings and peak mornings are crowded and extra buses are put on; leave slack if you have a train to catch back at Visp, because snow delays the bus easily.

When
Half-hourly PostBus from Visp through the day
Takes
About 50 minutes Visp to Saas-Fee, plus about 1 hour 10 minutes Zermatt to Visp
Fare
No current fare confirmed for this leg. Saas-Fee village car park charges were reported at Fr. 19 a day in winter and Fr. 14 in summer on an undated Wikivoyage edit

SeasonYear-round. The Saas valley road closes in the same storms that close the Mattertal. BookingNone needed; seats can be reserved on buses leaving Saas-Fee. Run byMatterhorn Gotthard Bahn and PostBus (PostAuto).

Electric taxis and hotel porters

Täsch to Zermatt on the licensed service road, and anywhere within the village

Zermatt's taxis are small electric vehicles, and a handful of firms hold the licence for the Täsch–Zermatt road, which is otherwise closed to the public. Ranks stand outside the main station and the cable car station; otherwise you phone the number painted on the side of the cab. Several Täsch car parks bundle parking with a taxi transfer into the village, which is worth considering if you are arriving late or with a lot of luggage – Zermatt Tourism lists them and sells the combined package. Most of the better hotels send a porter with an electric cart or trolley to meet your train and take the bags straight to your room, and a few still use horse-drawn carriages. Drivers accept phone bookings for early-morning departures.

When
On demand, day and night
Takes
About 10 to 15 minutes Täsch to Zermatt; a few minutes within the village
Fare
No published tariff was found. Zermatt Tourism lists operators and sells combined parking-plus-transfer packages but shows no per-trip price

SeasonYear-round. BookingPhone the operator, book the parking-and-transfer package through zermatt.swiss, or take one from the rank. Run byAround a dozen licensed firms including Taxi Schaller, Alphubel Limousine Service and Daniel Taxi.

Free electric village buses

Two lines through the centre along the Vispa: the green Ski-Bus line to the cable car station, and the red Winkelmatten line looping round Winkelmatten

Fourteen marked stops through the village, all served by small electric buses. Both lines run the same route through the middle, past the main station and the Gornergrat and Rothorn stations, then split. The green line ends at the Matterhorn Express cable car station, which is the one to take with skis. The red line loops the Winkelmatten quarter. Live positions and the current timetable are in the Matterhorn app, which also shows the bus on a map if you allow location access. Note that most of Zermatt is walkable in twenty minutes, so the bus is mainly for the two ends of the village and for anyone carrying gear.

When
Every 20 to 30 minutes depending on the time of day and season
Takes
A few minutes; the whole village is small
Fare 2026
Free. Zermatt Tourism states plainly that use of the e-bus service costs nothing, and the local bus is also listed as included in Zermatt Bergbahnen lift tickets (2026)

SeasonYear-round, with a reduced timetable between seasons. Run byGemeinde Zermatt / Zermatt Bergbahnen.

Air Zermatt helicopter transfers

Zermatt heliport to Sion, Raron, Bern, Geneva, Zurich, Lugano, Locarno, Gstaad, Verbier, Samedan and Chiasso for Milan Malpensa

Air Zermatt is the valley's rescue operator and also flies paying passengers, which makes it the fallback when the road and railway are both shut. The heliport is south-east of the village near the Winkelmatten side; Raron, down in the Rhône valley, is its second base and a cheaper starting point if you can get that far by train. Booking is through air-zermatt.ch or its online reservation system. The single-engine Ecureuil H125 takes five passengers, the twin-engine Bell 429 takes six. Separately, the Air Zermatt Rescue Card costs CHF 35 for a year and covers you for being flown off the mountain, which is worth more thought than it usually gets.

When
On demand, daylight and weather permitting
Takes
About 12 minutes to Raron, 15 to Sion, 45 to Geneva, 60 to Zurich, 30 to Chiasso plus a 45-minute road transfer to Milan Malpensa
Fare 2026
Transfer prices are quoted on request and not published. The Air Zermatt Rescue Card is CHF 35 a year (2026)

SeasonYear-round, weather permitting. BookingOnline reservation at app.air-zermatt.ch or by phone. Run byAir Zermatt AG.

Not confirmed

What we could not find out

10 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.

  1. 01

Wikivoyage still says the two village bus lines cost Fr. 2.50 and Fr. 3.20 with a weekly pass at Fr. 22. That is wrong now. Zermatt Tourism's own bus-stops page states the e-bus is free of charge, and Zermatt Bergbahnen lists the local bus as included in its tickets. Treat the e-bus as free and the Wikivoyage figures as stale.

  2. 02

No published taxi tariff for Zermatt or for the Täsch–Zermatt transfer. Zermatt Tourism lists thirteen taxi and parking operators with phone numbers and sells a combined parking-and-transfer package, but no price appears anywhere on the site, and three operator sites (taxischaller.ch, taxi-christophe.ch, taxi-schaller.ch) refused connections while zermatt-taxi.ch returned 403. Phone for a quote.

  3. 03

Matterhorn Terminal Täsch parking rates are not published. The booking page sells a space but shows the price only inside the checkout flow, and the Zermatt Tourism page links out to the booking system rather than listing a tariff. Motorcycle rates are stated to be similar to cars and disabled spaces the same as standard ones.

  4. 04

Air Zermatt does not publish transfer prices; only flight times by destination and the CHF 35 rescue card. Heliskiing and sightseeing flights are priced separately and were not checked.

  5. 05

Cable car and rack railway prices are dynamic. CHF 66 one way and CHF 132 return to Gornergrat come from the operator's own price table, but the 'from CHF' figures for Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, Sunnegga and the Alpine Crossing are entry prices for advance online booking; the walk-up price on a peak day is higher. Wikivoyage's Fr. 82 for the full cable car chain and Fr. 16 to Sunnegga are undated and well below the current operator prices.

  6. 06

The Zermatt to Saas-Fee fare could not be confirmed from PostBus. The 50-minute Visp to Saas-Fee timing and the Saas-Fee parking charges are from an undated Wikivoyage edit, not from PostBus or Saastal Marketing.

  7. 07

No current source found for a door-to-door luggage service from Swiss stations to Zermatt hotels. What is confirmed is the Matterhorn Terminal's free trolleys with a CHF 5 deposit, and a free luggage service for coach passengers if you register with bahnhof.taesch@mgbahn.ch by 16:00 the day before. Two Zermatt Tourism news pages about luggage delivery would not render.

  8. 08

Road and rail closures are the real risk in this valley and there is no published closure calendar. The recorded pattern: in June 2024 a landslide closed the Täsch–Zermatt road while the Vispa flooded and the R40, RE41 and RE42 trains were all cancelled, leaving replacement buses only as far as Täsch and no way in or out of Zermatt at all. In February 2026 an avalanche derailed a train in the Valais, the Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research issued its highest warning for parts of the Valais Alps, and road access toward Zermatt was blocked for days. Check the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn and Zermatt Tourism disruption pages before travelling in winter or after heavy rain.

  9. 09

The exact fine for driving into Zermatt is Fr. 350 on Wikivoyage but no official source for the amount was found; Zermatt Tourism only says large fines. The figure may be out of date.

  10. 10

The Gornergrat and Sunnegga operating hours quoted here are for the 2026 summer and late-autumn periods published by the operator. Winter opening hours were not retrieved.
