Isle of Wight
Three unregulated ferry and hovercraft operators cross the Solent on five routes, cars need booking ahead in summer and Cowes Week, and the island itself runs on the ex-London-Underground Island Line, Southern Vectis buses and a chain ferry across the Medina.

11 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed ten ways of moving to, from or around Isle of Wight: seven by water, one by rail and cable, one by road and one under your own steam, from 22 sources. One entry is not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. One needs a phone call or a message before you turn up.
The fares were seen in 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. Six fares carry no year, because they could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 5 of the 11 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 29 September 2026, and ends with four things we could not confirm.
By water
Wightlink Portsmouth – Fishbourne car ferry
Portsmouth (Gunwharf Road terminal) to Fishbourne, near Ryde
Wightlink's Portsmouth car ferry terminal on Gunwharf Road, not the Portsmouth Harbour Fastcat terminal; no public transport reaches this terminal directly

SeasonYear-round; no source fetched confirms a storm-cancellation policy for this specific crossing. BookingVehicle booking strongly advised, essential in the summer holidays. Run byWightlink.
Wightlink Lymington – Yarmouth car and passenger ferry
Lymington Pier to Yarmouth, west end of the Isle of Wight
Lymington Pier terminal is directly attached to Lymington Pier train station, the branch-line terminus from Brockenhurst

Wightlink Portsmouth Harbour – Ryde Pier Head FastCat

- Takes
- 15 minutes to Ryde Pier Head per Wikivoyage's Isle of Wight article; the Portsmouth article gives 10 minutes for the same crossing
- Fare
- Fare not confirmed from a fetched source
SeasonYear-round; foot passengers only, no vehicles. BookingNone required for foot passengers. Run byWightlink.
Red Funnel vehicle ferry, Southampton – East Cowes
Southampton Town Quay (Terminal 1) to East Cowes
Southampton terminal has a dedicated shuttle bus to the city centre and Southampton Central station; East Cowes terminal is in the town centre
- When
- Frequent crossings through the day; exact interval not confirmed from a fetched source
- Takes
- Crossing time approx. 1 hour
- Fare 2026
- Day return fares advertised from £14 (undated on the page fetched; captured September 2026)
SeasonYear-round. The operator's own live site was showing an October maintenance notice at the East Cowes Linkspan withdrawing specific late-night vehicle-ferry sailings and adding replacement Red Jet foot-passenger sailings, evidence that scheduled and weather/maintenance disruption both hit this route. BookingVehicle booking advised in advance, essential in summer holidays and around Cowes Week. Run byRed Funnel.
Red Jet, Southampton – West Cowes
Southampton Town Quay (Terminal 2) to West Cowes
Same Southampton shuttle bus as the vehicle ferry; West Cowes terminal is served by the #1 bus to Newport
- When
- Frequent through the day, thinning late at night; a temporary reduced Saturday timetable was in force in September/October 2026 during berth maintenance work
- Takes
- Crossing time approx. 28 mins per the operator's current timetable page; Wikivoyage's Cowes article gives 25 min
- Fare 2026
- Adult £14.40, per Wikivoyage's Cowes article, undated on the page itself beyond the article's own last edit
SeasonYear-round, foot passengers and light luggage only, no vehicles. BookingWalk-on, no reservation required for a standard fare. Run byRed Funnel.
Hovertravel Southsea – Ryde hovercraft
Southsea (Portsmouth) hoverport to Ryde Esplanade, next to Ryde bus station
At Southsea, National Express and local buses stop across the road; a paid Hoverbus links the terminal to Portsmouth & Southsea station. At Ryde, cross the footbridge over the railway to reach the bus station and Ryde Esplanade train station
- When
- Roughly every 20–30 minutes through the day on the operator's current published timetable, from about 06:50 to after 19:30, with extra flights added for events and Portsmouth FC late home matches

Cowes Floating Bridge (chain ferry)
Across the River Medina between Cowes and East Cowes
Slipways on both waterfronts; the alternative is an 11-mile road detour via Newport
- When
- Runs continuously rather than to a fixed interval; first crossing from East Cowes at 05:00 and from Cowes at 05:10, last crossing 00:20/00:25, per the operator's current timetable page
- Takes
- A few minutes
- Fare 2026
- Car/small van £2.50 with a Saver Card, £3.00 without; motorcycle £1.20/£1.70; foot passenger single 50p/£1.00; large van/minibus £2.70/£3.30; lorry up to 7.5T £7.00/£9.00, as published on the operator's current prices page
SeasonYear-round, but the chains are taken out of service annually for replacement and hydraulic oil changes; the operator's site was showing a suspension from 21 to 28 September 2026 for exactly this. BookingNone, drive or walk on; an extended timetable (0500–0125 daily) runs during Cowes Week to handle the extra traffic. Run byIsle of Wight Council.

On foot, by bike, or otherwise
Red Squirrel Trail and island cycle hire

Rules, permits and closures
Unregulated Solent fares and vehicle-booking pressure
All three Solent crossings
Not applicable; this is a standing condition of every crossing rather than a service
- When
- Ongoing
- Takes
- N/A
- Fare
- N/A
SeasonYear-round, sharpest around Cowes Week (late July–early August) and school-holiday peaks when vehicle spaces sell out. BookingTwo UK Government e-petitions calling for regulation or a resident subsidy were both rejected in 2026 on the grounds that they asked for local rather than national action, which is itself evidence the crossings are unregulated at national level. Run byWightlink, Red Funnel and Hovertravel set their own fares; no public service obligation applies to any Solent crossing.
What we could not find out
4 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
The brief's claim that Southern Vectis runs something called the 'Island Coaster' could not be confirmed; islandbuses.info returned a Cloudflare bot challenge on every fetch attempted, with and without a browser user agent, over both HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2.
- 02
Current Wightlink fares for all three of its routes could not be confirmed: wightlink.co.uk is a Next.js app whose routes-and-times and fares-and-tickets pages return an empty client-side shell (isFallback, no server-rendered content) rather than static fares text.
- 03
Red Funnel's booking platform runs on a live API at redfunnel.dolli.cloud/api, discovered via the site's own drupalSettings JSON (dolliApiBaseUrl); its ferry/routes, ferry/departure-time-tables and similar endpoints returned HTTP 400 'Could not determine which provider to use for this request' without a tenant parameter this session did not have, so it was not queried further – worth revisiting for docs/13-api-inventory.md.
- 04
The brief's characterisation of Hovertravel as the world's 'last' scheduled passenger hovercraft is the operator's own claim of being the world's 'only' commercial passenger hovercraft route (hovertravel.co.uk) – recorded as-is in that option rather than corrected, since both point at the same underlying fact.
What the planner can route today
The options above live on the place page, not in the departure board: a boat that comes when you phone has no time to show. What the board can do for Isle of Wight is this.
