Vlieland
Vlieland is one village, twelve kilometres of dune and forest behind it, and a twenty-square-kilometre sand plain at the far end that belongs to the air force. Everything arrives by the Harlingen ferry, three sailings a day each way on the winter timetable, ninety-five minutes, and the only thing that does not arrive with you is your car: guests may not bring a motor vehicle at all, and the exemption that lets residents, tradesmen and disabled-badge holders bring one is a paper permit bought from the municipality before the crossing. The transport system on the island is therefore the bicycle, and the practical questions are which of the three hire firms you booked with, and whether you handed your bags to Bagagevervoer Vlieland on the quay or are pushing them up Dorpsstraat yourself. A single electric bus line, Qbuzz line 1, runs from the ferry pier through the village to the Posthuys and is timed to the boat. West of the Posthuys the metalled road stops and the Vliehors begins: a live bombing range, closed on weekdays, crossed only by the Vliehors Expres, a high-wheeled truck that drives on the beach. In summer that truck is also half of the ferry link to Texel, meeting a boat at a wooden jetty on the sand. The daily link to Terschelling is not a ferry at all but the twelve-seat ms Zeehond, the school boat, weekdays only. Wind, not the tide, is what cancels things: Doeksen drops sailings in a gale and the Zeehond stops before the ferries do.

10 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed eight ways of moving to, from or around Vlieland: three by water, two under your own steam, two by road and one hired or on demand, from 47 sources. Two entries are not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. Three need a phone call or a message before you turn up.
The fares were seen in 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. One fare carries no year, because it could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 8 of the 10 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 28 September 2026, and ends with eight things we could not confirm.
By water
Rederij Doeksen, Harlingen to Vlieland
Harlingen ferry terminal to the Veerdam at Oost-Vlieland
This is the only scheduled way onto the island and it is one operator, Rederij Doeksen. On the autumn and winter pattern the regular ferry leaves Harlingen at 09:05, 14:05 and 19:05 and comes back from Vlieland at 06:50, 11:50 and 16:50, taking 95 minutes each way; a live check of Doeksen's own departures feed for 5 October 2026 returned exactly those three sailings, worked by ms Willem Barentsz, with ms Vlieland and ms Willem de Vlamingh covering on other days. The fast boat is the thing people get wrong: unlike the Terschelling line, which has a Sneldienst three or four times a day, Vlieland gets the fast boat only when demand justifies it. Across a 120-day check of the same feed only two fast sailings appeared on the Harlingen–Vlieland route, both in the first week of October, so do not plan a day trip around one. Trains to Harlingen Haven run via Leeuwarden and the station is a short walk from the terminal over the Sasbrug; drivers leave the car at P1, P2 or P3 on Skieppedykje and take the free shuttle. Book online: telephone or counter bookings carry a 2 euro service surcharge that the website does not. A single is 60 per cent of the return fare, and the Vlieland tourist tax is added on top of the ticket for your first day.
- When
- Three regular sailings a day each way on the winter timetable; a fast sailing only when demand requires one
- Takes
- 1h 35m on the regular ferry; 45 minutes on the rare fast sailing
- Fare 2026
- Adult return on the regular ferry 35.66 euro in winter, 36.90 euro in summer, 28.52 euro on an off-peak sailing; ages 4 to 11 17.74 euro, 65+ 32.00 euro. Fast ferry 54.46 euro return all year. Bicycle 19.62 euro return. Tourist tax 2.58 euro a head from age 4, added to the ticket
SeasonYear-round. Winter timetable 1 January to 31 March and 1 October to 31 December; summer timetable 1 April to 30 September. Bookingrederij-doeksen.nl or the ticket machines; telephone 088 9000 888 and the desk both add a 2 euro surcharge. Run byRederij Doeksen.
ms Zeehond, the Terschelling school boat
Vlieland harbour to West-Terschelling
The link between the two islands is not a ferry. It is Doeksen's Waddentaxi ms Zeehond, a twelve-passenger launch built in 2011 that was put on the water for schoolchildren and still runs as the school boat, and it appears in the operator's own departures feed on weekdays only. A check of every day from late September 2026 to early January 2027 returned service on Mondays to Fridays and never at a weekend, leaving Vlieland at 08:30 and 15:15 and Terschelling at 09:15 and 16:00, thirty minutes each way. There was also a full fortnight with no crossings in the first half of October, so check rather than assume. She takes twelve people and eight bicycles and nothing else: no cars, motorbikes, cargo bikes, mopeds or luggage trolleys, and she is not accessible to wheelchairs or mobility scooters because of the limited quay facilities. Be at the boarding point fifteen minutes before departure. She is the first thing cancelled in wind: when a code yellow hit on 15 September 2025 Doeksen dropped two Vlieland ferry sailings and the Waddentaxi did not sail at all. The service is not inside the state ferry concession, which is why the Vlieland council and then the Dutch parliament have been pushing to get it written in. Teachers, care workers and commuters use it as much as the pupils do.
- When
- Weekdays only, twice each way; no weekend service and occasional weeks off
- Takes
- 30 minutes island to island; about an hour from Harlingen if chartered
- Fare 2026
- Doeksen publishes the Terschelling to Vlieland fare as 22.62 euro return, 11.31 euro single for ages 12 to 64, 15.40 euro return for ages 4 to 11, with no tourist tax on this route. The separate Waddentaxi tariff page returned a server error on the day of checking
SeasonYear-round on weekdays. BookingBook ahead, twelve seats only. Exclusive charter weekdays 09:00 to 17:00 on 06 109 411 86. Run byRederij Doeksen, Waddentaxi ms Zeehond.
ms Noord-Nederland, the freight boat
Korte Lijnbaan 35, Harlingen to Havenweg 8, Vlieland, via Terschelling
Everything the island consumes that will not fit on the passenger ferry travels on ms Noord-Nederland, a 65.6 m roll-on roll-off freight catamaran, the first of its kind in Europe, with a 182 m vehicle deck, 449 tonnes of capacity and room for twelve people. Anything six metres or longer, or a tractor unit travelling on its own, counts as freight and cannot use the passenger boat. The published 2026 freight timetable is built round Terschelling, twice each weekday from Harlingen at 08:45 and 13:45; Vlieland only appears in the summer window, 2 May to 29 August, when the Saturday working runs Terschelling to Vlieland at 11:00 and back at 14:00. Outside that, Vlieland freight is arranged by telephone. Two things catch operators out. The boat is out of the water for a yard period from Tuesday 6 January to Sunday 1 February 2027, with no replacement advertised, and any vehicle going to Vlieland needs a T-ontheffing from the municipality before it sails, which the shipping line will not obtain for you. Heavy transport over 45 tonnes needs a separate exemption arranged through Doeksen.
- When
- Twice each weekday Harlingen to Terschelling; the Vlieland leg is a Saturday working from 2 May to 29 August
- Takes
- 2 hours
- Fare 2026
- 18.26 euro per half metre one way, 30.32 euro per half metre return, excluding VAT, charged per started half metre for vehicles 6 m and over. Add 10 per cent for 3.00 to 3.75 m wide, 50 per cent above 3.75 m
SeasonYear-round to Terschelling; no boat from 6 January to 1 February 2027 for a yard period. Booking088 9000 888; T-ontheffing from Gemeente Vlieland first. Run byRederij Doeksen, Waddenvracht.
Rules, permits and closures
T-ontheffing, the exemption from the car ban
Gemeente Vlieland, Dorpsstraat 127, applied for before the crossing
Vlieland is autoluw and legally closed to motor vehicles, and the municipality means it: guests may not bring a car, motorbike, scooter or moped, and an electric one is no exception. Three groups can get round it. Residents hold a B-ontheffing, the B standing for bewoners. Businesses doing work on the island, builders and fitters and the like, and anyone holding a Dutch disabled parking card, apply for a T-ontheffing, the T standing for tijdelijk, temporary. You apply online through the municipality's site, paying by iDeal on either the burger or the bedrijfsmatig form, and you get an email with a link to download the permit. A T-ontheffing runs for a maximum of four weeks. On a disabled card it covers only journeys carrying the cardholder. For moving furniture to a holiday house you must use a commercial vehicle, not a private car. The municipality checks every day whether the permits it issued were justified and will telephone you and withdraw one that was not. The permit is separate from the boat: you must also reserve deck space with Doeksen, and a car costs 204.92 euro return in winter on top of the 70 euro permit. A trailer needing its own plates can only be booked with a car, so it needs a T-ontheffing too; a recreational trailer under 750 kg can go without one.
- When
- On application, before you travel. Deck space is limited, so book the boat first
- Takes
- Four weeks maximum per T-ontheffing
- Fare 2026
- T-ontheffing 70.00 euro, or 34.00 euro on a disabled parking card. Private car on the ferry 204.92 euro return in winter, 215.16 euro in summer, 163.94 euro off-peak. Motorbike 58.68 euro return in winter, moped 39.16 euro
SeasonYear-round. Bookingvlieland.nl, T-ontheffing aanvragen, iDeal; municipality on (0562) 452700, info@vlieland.nl. Run byGemeente Vlieland; deck space from Rederij Doeksen.
What stops things: wind, the winter timetable and the bombing range
The whole island, and the Vliehors in particular
Three separate authorities decide whether you move. Rederij Doeksen decides the boats, and the trigger is wind rather than tide: on a KNMI code yellow with gusts near 90 km/h in September 2025 the line cancelled the 16:50 from Vlieland and the 19:10 back, the Waddentaxi did not sail at all and a tug was needed to berth the Friesland at Harlingen. The Dutch parliament voted in March 2025 that the ferry timetable must not be set by the tide, because doing so costs the islands predictability, so do not expect sailings to slide with high water. The commercial squeeze is the other reason services thin out: passenger numbers to Vlieland fell 6.2 per cent in 2024 and Doeksen responded by starting the winter timetable on 1 October instead of 1 November, dropping structural Sunday-evening fast sailings and running a fast boat on the Vlieland line in October only when demand requires it. The operator's own booking feed stops at 4 January 2027, so nothing beyond that is bookable yet. On land, the Ministry of Defence controls the western third. The Vliehors, operationally Cornfield Range, is the only place in the Netherlands where Dutch and NATO pilots may train with live munitions and up to seventy 500-pound bombs a year, and it is closed on weekdays; the beach crossing to Texel exists only because the Vliehors Expres is escorted over it. Unexploded ordnance is a real risk, as in November 2024 when a bomb dropped on a training flight buried itself without detonating and the municipality shut the airspace, closed shipping routes south of the Vliehors and roped off the range boundary. The Raad van State struck down the range's nature permit in February 2026 and gave the cabinet four months to decide again, so the legal basis for the training is currently unsettled even though the flying continues.
- When
- Wind cancellations several times each winter; the range is closed to the public on every working day
- Takes
- Cancellations are usually a single sailing; range closures are permanent on weekdays
- Fare 2026
- No charge. Cancelled ferry tickets are handled by Doeksen; De Vriendschap refunds a crossing it cannot re-run
SeasonWinter timetable from 1 October; storm season October to March. BookingCancelled and retimed sailings are posted on the shipping line's website. Run byRederij Doeksen; Ministerie van Defensie for the Vliehors Range; Gemeente Vlieland for the hoogwaterprotocol.
On foot, by bike, or otherwise
Bagagevervoer Vlieland and what you may carry free
The Veerdam at Oost-Vlieland to your accommodation, and back
With no car and a bicycle to ride, luggage is a real problem and the island has a trade that solves it. Bagagevervoer Vlieland waits on the veerdam as the boat lands, takes your bags for a small charge and delivers them to your accommodation, which frees you to collect a key, pick up a hire bike or do the shopping. Going home you book the same service, but you must arrange it with the carrier at least 24 hours in advance. On the ferry itself Doeksen allows unlimited hold luggage per person and charges nothing for it. What you do pay for is awkward single items: a separate bicycle trailer 19.62 euro, a handcart 15.50 euro, a wheelbarrow, hand truck or pet stroller 15.50 euro, and sports gear over 140 by 60 by 50 cm such as a kayak, SUP, surfboard, kiteboard, tent or a musical instrument over three metres 19.62 euro. Anything that fits the hold-luggage box of 85 by 60 by 35 cm rides free, and a pram in use, a child's scooter, a folded folding bike and a wheelchair or mobility scooter in use by a disabled person are all free regardless. Campers on the island can leave gear with Jan van Vlieland's kampeeropslag rather than haul it back and forth.
- When
- Meets every arriving boat on the veerdam
- Takes
- Bags follow you to the door, usually within the hour
- Fare 2026
- The VVV describes the delivery as a small charge and does not publish the figure; no confirmed price. Doeksen's special-item charges are 15.50 or 19.62 euro depending on the item
SeasonYear-round. BookingNone needed on arrival; book the return at least 24 hours ahead with the carrier. Run byBagagevervoer Vlieland; Rederij Doeksen for the crossing itself.
The island bicycle: Jan van Vlieland, Frisia and Wimo
Oost-Vlieland village to the Posthuys, the campsites, the lighthouse and the beach paths
Because guests cannot bring a car, the bicycle is not an option on Vlieland, it is the transport system: 26 km of shell-surfaced paths through the pine plantations and over the dunes, with the Vuurboetsduin at 45 m the highest dune in the Wadden. There are exactly three hire firms. Jan van Vlieland is at Havenweg 7, directly opposite where the boat lands, keeps more than 2,500 bikes and stays open for the evening boat and the fast boat as well as normal hours; Fietsverhuur Frisia and Wimo Fietsverhuur are the other two, and the Texel day-trip operator sends its passengers to Wimo. Book ahead: the VVV warns that stock, especially e-bikes and mobility scooters, is limited and should be reserved in advance. Jan van Vlieland's 2026 prices are 7.20 euro a day for a plain coaster-brake bike, 9.90 euro for a three-speed with a crate or a seven-speed, 15.75 euro for a mountain bike, 21.60 euro for an e-bike including charger and pannier, 22.50 euro for a tandem and 37.80 euro for an electric cargo bike; rates drop for stays over one day and a week costs five days. Bringing your own is 19.62 euro return on the ferry, and bikes travel only on the regular ferry, never on the fast boat, except on the Terschelling to Vlieland run.
- When
- Shops open daily and meet the boats; the Havenweg shop opens 09:00 to 18:00, with a midday break on weekdays
- Takes
- Village to the Posthuys is about 20 minutes on the flat path
- Fare 2026
- From 7.20 euro a day for a basic bike to 37.80 euro for an electric cargo bike; e-bike 21.60 euro a day, 99.50 euro a week. Your own bike on the ferry 19.62 euro return in winter, 20.60 euro in summer

By road
Qbuzz line 1, Dorp Veerdam to Posthuys
Vlieland Dorp Veerdam through Oost-Vlieland to the Posthuys
There is one bus line on the island and it has existed since the 1950s, run in turn by the NTM, the Friese Autobus Maatschappij, VEONN, Arriva and, since 15 December 2024, Qbuzz. In the national transport register it is line 1, Vlieland-Dorp to Posthuys, with the two terminus names Dorp Veerdam and Posthuys. The buses have been electric since 1 January 2017 and Qbuzz borrows a Stadsbuzz from the Drechtsteden for the summer peak. A bus stands waiting on the veerdam as the boat comes in, which is the point of the service; the rest of the timetable is posted at the stops and available from the VVV office on Havenweg, and there is a separate winter and summer timetable, so do not assume the pattern you used in August. You check in with a bank card or an OV-chipkaart, not cash. Intermediate stops include Duinkersoord by the boshuisjes, the Kampeerterrein and Stortemelk Het Sluisje for the campsites and Seeduyn for the hotel. The route is not fixed in stone: in November 2023 high groundwater put the Kampweg at risk of subsidence and the campsite stops were dropped, with passengers sent to Duinkersoord instead.
- When
- Timed to every arriving and departing ferry, with separate winter and summer timetables
- Takes
- Veerdam to the Posthuys is about 15 minutes
- Fare
- No confirmed fare: Qbuzz's own site could not be reached from here and the VVV states only that you check in with a bank card or OV-chipkaart

Texel to Vlieland on one ticket: De Vriendschap plus the Vliehors Expres
Paal 33 beach near De Cocksdorp on Texel, across the Eierlandse Gat to the Vliehors, then by truck to the Posthuys
The summer link from Texel is a single ticket covering two vehicles that meet halfway on a sandbank. De Vriendschap, a converted shrimper and the only passenger boat working the Eierlandse Gat, sails beach to beach; on the Vliehors the passengers step off onto the sand and into the Vliehors Expres, which drives them the rest of the way to the Posthuys, the westernmost stop on the island bus. The whole crossing takes about an hour. On Texel you board from the wooden jetty on the beach opposite the KNRM lifeboat house by Strandpaviljoen Kaap Noord at Paal 33, reached through the ticket office De Noorman at Volharding 2a, De Cocksdorp; on Vlieland you start at the Posthuys, Postweg 4. The jetties are wooden and the approach is sand, which the operator warns is hard work with a pushchair, a wheelchair or narrow tyres. Day trips leave Texel about 10:30 and put you back around 18:15, and no private bicycles are allowed on the day trip, only on the single. The service is seasonal, running from the May school holiday to the end of September, and is suspended at force 8 to 9 or above, with a refund if they cannot re-run it.
- When
- Roughly daily in season, one crossing each way; Wikivoyage records departures from Paal 33 around 17:15
- Takes
- About 1 hour end to end, boat plus truck
- Fare 2026
- Single 30.50 euro adult, 20.50 euro ages 3 to 10, 10.00 euro under 3; bicycle 12.50 euro, bike trailer 15.00 euro, tandem 30.00 euro. Day return 43.50 euro adult, 33.50 euro child, no own bicycles
SeasonMay school holiday to the end of September only. Bookingwaddenveer.nl or +31 6 13524734; book the Vlieland hire bike in advance, the operator points people at Wimo. Run byWaddenveer De Vriendschap with De Vliehors Expres B.V.
Hired, booked and on demand
Vliehors Expres over the sand
Oost-Vlieland westward over the Vliehors sand flat to the Drenkelingenhuisje and the western point
West of the Posthuys the island ends in the Vliehors, a 20-square-kilometre sand plain locals call the Sahara of the North, and the only vehicle that crosses it is the Vliehors Expres, a high-wheeled truck that drives on the beach. The pick-up point moves with the season: from 1 June to 30 September it leaves from in front of the restaurant at the Posthuys, and from 1 October to 31 May from the beach at the Badhuys. Evening trips always go from the Badhuys. The round trip lasts two hours, stops at the Drenkelingenhuisje, a century-old castaway shelter now fitted out as a beachcombers' museum and an official wedding venue, and runs out to the western point where seals usually haul out within sight of Texel. Doeksen has nothing to do with it; tickets are sold online and over the counter at the VVV on Havenweg 10, De Coupure at Dorpsstraat 2, De Eenhoorn at Dorpsstraat 73 and Inspiratie at Dorpsstraat 122b. Seatbelts are compulsory because the truck moves unpredictably on sand, and participation is at your own risk. Special evening runs are priced separately: 32.50 euro for the Saturday sunset trip, 35.00 euro with a troubadour and a campfire, 115 euro for the four-course culinary evening that starts from the Seeduyn bus stop on the Qbuzz.
- When

What we could not find out
8 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
The Qbuzz line 1 fare and its printed timetable could not be confirmed. Qbuzz's own website returns HTTP 403 to everything from here, the national OVapi stop register carries no Vlieland stops, and the VVV says only that you check in with a bank card or OV-chipkaart. A Qbuzz press release from December 2024 announced free bus travel on the Wadden islands from 15 December 2024 to 5 January 2025, which was a launch promotion and had ended long before this check; do not assume the bus is free. Ask at the VVV office, Havenweg 10, or read the sheet posted at the Veerdam stop.
- 02
Bagagevervoer Vlieland's charge for taking bags from the quay to an address is described by the VVV only as a small amount. No published tariff was found and the firm has no reachable website; ask on the veerdam or through your accommodation.
- 03
The Waddentaxi's own tariff page at rederij-doeksen.nl/tarieven/tarieven-waddentaxi returned a 502 on the day of checking, so the fare quoted for ms Zeehond is the published Terschelling to Vlieland passenger tariff rather than a Waddentaxi-specific one. Charter rates are quoted by telephone on 06 109 411 86 only.
- 04
The summer timetable for the Terschelling to Vlieland crossing could not be checked. Doeksen's departures feed carries nothing after 4 January 2027, so the weekday-only Monday to Friday pattern established here is a winter observation. Whether the ms Zeehond runs at weekends in July and August is unconfirmed.
- 05
Vlieland has no civil airfield and no scheduled or charter flights were found. The only aviation on the island is military: the Vliehors Range, which has no passenger function. The Vliegbasis whose runway is being lengthened in the Defence expansion plans is Leeuwarden, at Marsum on the mainland, not on Vlieland. Anyone told there is an airfield on Vlieland is being pointed at the bombing range.
- 06
Watertaxi Vlieland is named by the VVV as a second fast-crossing operator alongside Doeksen's Waddentaxi, but watertaxivlieland.nl did not resolve and no fare, timetable or telephone number was found. Ask the VVV on 0562 45 1111.
- 07
The Vliehors Expres evening programme quoted here is from the operator's summer page, which lists dates as weekdays in named Dutch school holidays rather than calendar dates. Confirm the specific evening you want when booking.
- 08
Winter departure counts for the ferry were sampled from the operator's live feed on 28 September 2026 and reflect the 2026 winter timetable, which began on 1 October. A fresh check is needed after the 2027 timetable is loaded, which had not happened by 4 January 2027 in the feed.
What the planner can route today
The options above live on the place page, not in the departure board: a boat that comes when you phone has no time to show. What the board can do for Vlieland is this.
