Tioman
One boat a day decides everything. Tioman is reached by ferry from two mainland jetties, Mersing in Johor and Tanjung Gemok (Teluk Gading) in Pahang, and the Mersing river mouth is shallow enough that the sailing time moves with the tide: it can be 06:00 one day and 13:00 the next, and on some dates there is no Mersing sailing at all. Tanjung Gemok has deeper water and keeps a steadier 09:00–12:00 pattern, which is why people with fixed plans use it. The ferry then works down the west coast calling at Genting, Paya, Tekek, Air Batang and Salang, so the jetty you book is the jetty you must name – there is no road to walk between most of them. Only Tekek and Juara are linked by road, a steep concrete track over the middle of the island served by 4x4 taxis; everywhere else you go by sea taxi. Foreign visitors pay a marine park conservation fee in cash before boarding. The island is duty-free, and from about November to February the northeast monsoon cuts the ferries back, closes most dive shops and shuts many chalets.

9 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed seven ways of moving to, from or around Tioman: four by water, one hired or on demand, one under your own steam and one by road, from 33 sources. Two entries are not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. Two of them run only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. One needs a phone call or a message before you turn up.
The fares were seen in 2024 to 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. We rate 7 of the 9 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 22 September 2026, and ends with eight things we could not confirm.
By water
Mersing to Tioman ferry
Mersing Harbour Centre, Johor, to Genting, Paya, Tekek, Air Batang (ABC), Panuba and Salang, in that order
Mersing Harbour Centre is on Jalan Abu Bakar at the river mouth, about 1 km downriver from the Mersing bus terminal – face the river and turn right, past the stadium; it is a 10–15 minute walk. Some coaches set down at Plaza Djeti next to the terminal instead. Bluewater's ticket collection counter is units W1 and W2 inside the complex, about 100 m from the departure berth; collect your boarding pass an hour before departure, because the counter shuts 20–30 minutes before the boat goes. Book the jetty nearest your accommodation, not just 'Tioman': Genting for Melina, Tunamaya and Sun Beach; Paya for Paya Resort and Aman; Tekek for Berjaya and for the Juara road; Air Batang for Bamboo Hill, ABC Chalet and SP Barakah; Salang for Indah, Sayang and Pusaka. Panuba is called at only if Panuba guests are aboard. Nipah and Mukut are reached by sea taxi from Genting. Occasional sailings run to Juara from Mersing only, but not daily.
- When
- Usually one sailing a day each way, and the time changes daily with the tide. Published September 2026 Mersing departures ranged from 06:00 to 13:00, with the return from Tioman one to three hours earlier the same morning; two dates that month had no sailing at all. The following month's times are only posted about mid-way through the preceding month
- Takes
- 1 hour 30 minutes to the first jetty; Bluewater's booking engine quotes 2–3 hours for the whole run
- Fare 2026
- Bluewater, September 2026, per one-way leg: adult Malaysian RM60, child Malaysian RM55, adult non-Malaysian RM75, child non-Malaysian RM70. A non-Malaysian adult return to Tekek came to RM150. A fuel surcharge (8 percent in September 2026, on a sliding scale up to 18 percent) is not in the online price and is collected in cash at the ticket counter. Walk-up return tickets are quoted at RM120–150. The occasional Mersing–Juara sailing is about RM85 one way
SeasonYear-round in principle, but thinned out and sometimes suspended from about November to February. Peak demand April to September, weekends, school and public holidays. BookingOnline at bluewater.my or cataferry.com, or through tiomanferry.com which resells the same boats alongside bus tickets. Tickets are not refundable and cannot be changed. Nothing is sold on board. If you are returning from the island on a one-way ticket you must check in online and print your own boarding pass. Run byBluewater Express (Bistari Gemilang Travel / Bistari Gemilang Shipping); Cataferry also licensed on the route with catamarans.
Tanjung Gemok (Teluk Gading) to Tioman ferry
Terminal Feri Tanjung Gemok, Kuala Rompin, Pahang, to the same west coast jetties
Tanjung Gemok jetty is at Kampung Tanjung Gemok, 26820 Kuala Rompin, about 40 km north of Mersing on Federal Route 3, and is signposted as Endau-Rompin or Teluk Gading. It is the same two ferry companies, so it is worth checking both ports for the same date. Bluewater's counter here is Kaunter 3 inside the terminal. The jetty is in deeper water than Mersing, so departures do not swing about with the tide in the same way. There is paid parking at the terminal. Coaches from Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru can be booked through to this terminal rather than to Mersing.
- When
- One to three sailings a day each way and far more stable than Mersing. Through September 2026 most days had a single 09:00 or 10:00 departure with the return at 12:00 or 13:00; busier days added an 11:00, 12:00 or 15:00 sailing
- Takes
- About 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours
- Fare 2026
- Same Bluewater tariff as Mersing: adult non-Malaysian RM75 per leg, adult Malaysian RM60, plus the fuel surcharge in cash at the counter (September 2026)
SeasonYear-round, reduced and weather-dependent from about November to February. Bookingbluewater.my, cataferry.com or tiomanferry.com; collect the boarding pass at Kaunter 3 an hour before departure. Run byBluewater Express; Cataferry.
Sea taxis between the villages
Genting, Paya, Tekek, Air Batang, Salang, Nipah, Mukut and Juara, in any combination
There is no road network on Tioman. Apart from the Tekek–Juara track, the villages are connected only by sea, so the small open speedboats are the local bus service. Three ways to get one: ask your chalet or resort front desk, who usually have a boatman on the phone; go to the water taxi counter at a main jetty such as Tekek or Salang, where standard route prices are posted; or take a boatman's WhatsApp number once you have met one and book directly for early dive runs or a fishing trip. It is cash only, in ringgit. Put anything electronic in a dry bag, and take a life jacket. Nipah and Mukut on the south coast are usually reached by a short hop from Genting. Fares roughly double after dark. The cheapest hop of all, if the timing suits, is simply to stay on the Mersing ferry as it works between Salang and Genting.
- When
- On demand in daylight; boats are easiest to find around ferry arrivals
- Takes
- 5–20 minutes between neighbouring west coast villages; about 30–45 minutes Tekek to Juara around the island
- Fare 2024
- No current published tariff was found. Older figures, which should be treated as a floor rather than a quote: RM20–60 for a single hop, about RM30 Salang to Tekek, RM60–100 Salang to Juara, around RM150 for a west coast to east coast crossing, shareable between passengers, and double at night
SeasonYear-round in calm weather, daylight only; unreliable in the monsoon. BookingNone needed. Agree the price before you get in, and carry cash. Run byIndependent local boat owners; some jetties have a water taxi counter.
Boats to Rawa and the other Seribuat islands
Mersing to Pulau Rawa, Pulau Besar, Pulau Tengah, Pulau Tinggi and Pulau Sibu; Tanjung Leman to Pulau Sibu
These are not ferries. Every island in the Seribuat group off Mersing is served by its resort's own boat, booked with the room, or by a chartered day boat. Rawa Island Resort runs a private speedboat from its own jetty next to the main Mersing ferry terminal, about 20–30 minutes; the booking office is at the Tourist Centre on Jalan Abu Bakar and will phone you a few days ahead with your boat time. Rawa takes no day visitors and has a two-night minimum. For Pulau Besar and Pulau Tengah there is no scheduled service either – book through a travel agent in Mersing town or at the jetty. Pulau Sibu is reached not from Mersing but from Tanjung Leman, 72 km south, with the resort's own transfer. Day island-hopping trips combining Rawa, Besar and Tengah are sold at Mersing Harbour Centre and online.
- When
- By arrangement, matched to resort check-in and check-out times; daylight only
- Takes
- 20–30 minutes Mersing to Rawa; about 30 minutes Tanjung Leman to Sibu
- Fare 2026
- Rawa Island Resort two-way boat transfer MYR 140 nett per person, included in the full board package (2026). Secure parking at their Mersing office RM15 per car per day, cashless. Sibu resort transfer around RM70 return per person, or RM80 including road transfer
SeasonResorts stay open all year but March to October has the calm seas. Boats are rescheduled or cancelled for weather and tide. BookingWith your accommodation, in advance. Rawa is prepaid, non-refundable and completely cashless. Run byRawa Island Resort Sdn Bhd and the other island resorts; Mersing travel agents for day charters.
Rules, permits and closures
Marine park conservation fee
Payable by every visitor before boarding, at the mainland ferry terminal
Tioman sits inside the Mersing Marine Park. The conservation fee is collected at a separate counter at the ferry port, not included in your ferry ticket, and it is cash only – there is no card terminal, so change some ringgit before you reach the jetty. Reported at RM30 for foreign visitors and RM5 for Malaysians as of 2026. Ferry operators warn that this and the Johor national park charge both have to be paid in cash on the day.
- When
- Once per arrival
- Takes
- A few minutes at the counter
- Fare 2026
- RM30 per foreign visitor, RM5 per Malaysian (2026)
SeasonYear-round. BookingNone; pay cash at the terminal. Run byMarine park authority, collected at the ferry terminal.
Northeast monsoon shutdown
Affects every crossing to and from the island, and most of what is open on it
From roughly late October or November to February the northeast monsoon blows straight onto this coast. Ferries run much less often, individual sailings are suspended at short notice, and a bad spell can stop crossings for days or weeks. Most dive shops close for the season, and many chalets and small resorts shut from about the end of October to mid or late February. If your sailing is cancelled you can usually rebook for a later date or claim a refund, but an administration fee is deducted. The one thing the monsoon brings is surf: the swell hits the east coast, and Juara gets rideable waves from November to February. Check the operator's Facebook or the @BluewaterAlert feed the day before you travel, and do not plan a tight onward connection in this window.
- When
- Annual, roughly November to February; the worst of it is usually November to January
- Takes
- Individual suspensions of a day to several weeks
- Fare 2026
- No charge, but cancellation refunds carry an administration fee
SeasonLate October to mid or late February. BookingNothing to book. Confirm the sailing the day before and keep a spare day either side. Run byBluewater Express, Cataferry, harbour authorities.
Hired, booked and on demand
Tekek to Juara 4x4 taxi over the island
Kampung Tekek on the west coast to Kampung Juara on the east coast, over the central saddle
This is the only road crossing on Tioman. The track was cut by the Japanese in the Second World War, follows the main power cable, and is now a steep concrete strip that only a 4WD will manage. From the Tekek jetty turn left (north) along the road until you see a 'to Juara' sign on the right, past the Jamek Mosque, and carry on up to the power station – that is where the vehicles wait. Juara resorts run their own shuttle and will meet a named ferry if you email or WhatsApp them your booking, ferry time and operator; that is usually cheaper and more certain than bargaining at the jetty. Avoid the touts working the airstrip. Book the Tekek jetty on your ferry ticket, because the ferry does not call at Juara most days.
- When
- On demand, keyed to ferry arrivals at Tekek; resort shuttles are prearranged
- Takes
- 20–30 minutes on a resort shuttle; up to 45 minutes on a slower vehicle
- Fare 2026
- Juara Beach Resort's shuttle, 2026: RM35 per adult and RM30 per child one way, RM70 and RM60 return. Independent 4WD taxis have been quoted at RM75 for one person, RM120 for two, or RM35 each with a minimum of four, and up to about RM175 to charter a whole vehicle
SeasonYear-round; the concrete is treacherous in heavy rain. BookingThrough your Juara accommodation by email or WhatsApp a day or two ahead, or just turn up at the Tekek end and negotiate. Run byJuara resorts and independent 4WD owner-drivers.
On foot, by bike, or otherwise
Cross-island and coastal footpaths
Tekek to Juara over the saddle; Tekek to Air Batang; Air Batang to Monkey Beach, Monkey Bay and on to Salang
The trails follow the power lines, so if you lose the path look up for the cable. For Tekek to Juara, walk north from the Tekek jetty to the power station; a small 'to Juara' sign is on your right. Skirt the fence on an uncleared path and look for red and white plastic strips tied to trees. It climbs about 320 m over 2 km on rock and concrete steps, then descends 4.5 km of concrete road to the Juara jetty. Refill water about halfway at the stream that supplies Tekek. It gets dark early under the canopy, especially on the Tekek side, and there are no lights. Tekek to Air Batang is a flat 3.5 km on a concrete path north along the shore. North of Air Batang the coastal path to Monkey Beach takes about 70 minutes and the onward leg to Salang up to 90 minutes, both steeper and not for a heavy pack.
- When
- Any time in daylight
- Takes
- Tekek to Juara 1h 30m unladen at a fast pace, 2h 30m with a full pack, 3 to 3h 30m village to village. Tekek to Air Batang about 45 minutes
- Fare 2024
- Free. Coming back the same day costs money: speedboat or 4WD, RM50–100
SeasonYear-round; slippery and leech-prone after rain. BookingNone. Take plenty of water, long trousers and proper shoes, and start early. Run byNone.
By road
Coaches from Singapore, Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur to the ferry jetties
Larkin Sentral (Johor Bahru), Singapore, Melaka, Kuala Lumpur and Kuantan to Mersing Bus Terminal or Tanjung Gemok
Causeway Link (Handal Indah) runs the workhorse route from Larkin Sentral in Johor Bahru to Mersing Bus Terminal, and also sells a Larkin–Mersing Jetty service. From Singapore the cheap way is a local bus to Larkin and a connection there; Transnasional runs direct from Lavender Street at about three times the price and needs booking a day or more ahead. S&S International is the only direct bus from Melaka Central. Long-distance coaches on the east coast route between Johor Bahru and Kuantan or Kota Bharu also set down in Mersing. Some services stop at Plaza Djeti next to the ferry terminal, which saves the 1 km walk from the bus terminal. If you board in Johor Bahru at 14:30 or later you will very likely miss the day's ferry, and the tide can make the last boat leave in the morning, so aim for the first bus of the day. Coming back, pre-book: the bus is often full.
- When
- Causeway Link Larkin to Mersing Bus Terminal at 07:00, 08:00, 13:30 and 14:30, returning 10:30, 11:30, 17:00 and 18:00 (September 2026). S&S from Melaka at 08:00, 12:45 and 18:15. Transnasional from Lavender Street, Singapore, first bus 09:00 arriving Mersing about 13:00
- Takes
- Larkin Sentral to Mersing 3 hours; Melaka to Mersing about 4 hours 30 minutes; Singapore to Mersing about 4 hours plus border time
- Fare 2026
- Causeway Link Larkin to Mersing RM23 adult, RM17.50 child, about SGD 8.05 (September 2026). Older figures: S&S Johor Bahru to Mersing RM11.70. A taxi from Johor Bahru is around RM130–180 per car
SeasonYear-round. Bookingexpress.causewaylink.com.my for Causeway Link, or busonlineticket.com, which tiomanferry.com resells so you can buy the coach and the ferry together. Book ahead in the April to September peak and around holidays. Run byCauseway Link / Handal Indah, Transnasional, S&S International Express, Cepat Ekspres, Utama Ekspres, Maju and others.
What we could not find out
8 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
The airport. Tioman has an airstrip next to Kampung Tekek (IATA TOD) and Wikivoyage still records that there are no scheduled commercial flights and that general aviation is the only way in by air. The history behind that: SKS Airways started Subang–Tioman in May 2022 and suspended its flights in November 2023; Tunamaya Air launched a Tioman service in May 2023; Berjaya Air's Singapore–Tioman flight was withdrawn earlier and the ferry operator says that is why the Mersing boats now run full. A separate government project for a new Tioman airport was cancelled in August 2023 on environmental grounds, and there were fresh calls to revive it in July 2025. Against all that, the Bluewater-linked agent site tiomanferry.com currently advertises a 12-seat Cessna Grand Caravan on daily Subang–Tioman flights plus Senai, at about RM550 one way and RM1,000 return, with Seletar 'approval pending'. That is an enquiry form, not a bookable timetable, and no operator name is given. Treat air service as unconfirmed and check with the agent before relying on it.
- 02
This corrects the brief in two places. Bluewater's fare is no longer a flat RM75: as of September 2026 it is RM60 for Malaysians and RM75 for foreigners per leg, with a separate cash fuel surcharge on top that is not shown online. And the ferry now reaches Juara directly on some dates from Mersing, at about RM85, rather than never.
- 03
The Mersing timetable is published only about a month ahead and different resellers show different times for the same date. For 25 September 2026 the agent site listed a 10:00 Mersing departure while a Juara chalet listed 09:00. Take the time from the operator you actually booked with, and arrive an hour early.
- 04
No current published tariff for Tioman sea taxis could be found anywhere. The jetty counters at Tekek and Salang are said to post standard route prices, but nothing is online. The RM20–150 range here is from older traveller reports and is probably low.
- 05
Cataferry's fare and schedule pages are ASP.NET postback forms that could not be read without a browser session, and its booking form currently offers only Mersing and Pulau Tioman as origins even though its own jetty pages cover Tanjung Gemok. Its fares are believed higher than Bluewater's because it runs newer catamarans, but no figure was confirmed.
- 06
Direct Singapore to Mersing coach times and fares could not be confirmed from an operator. Causeway Link's booking system returned nothing for the Larkin–Mersing Jetty route, only Larkin–Mersing Bus Terminal. The Transnasional 09:00 from Lavender Street comes from Wikivoyage, not from the operator.
- 07
Tioman's duty-free status is real and long-standing – shops include Vision Duty Free and QKS at Tekek, and Paya Beach Resort – but the current allowance and any post-2020 change to the scheme could not be verified from a government source. There is no duty-free allowance into Singapore from Malaysia, so declare anything you carry back.
- 08
The RM30 marine park conservation fee comes from Wikivoyage and from the ferry agent, not from a Pahang or Johor government page. The exact collecting authority and whether the Johor national park charge is separate or the same money could not be pinned down.
What the planner can route today
The options above live on the place page, not in the departure board: a boat that comes when you phone has no time to show. What the board can do for Tioman is this.
