Selatpanjang

Tebing Tinggi island has no bridge or road to Sumatra, so everything in and out of Selatpanjang moves through Tanjung Harapan and Insit terminals: a minivan-and-ferry combination to Pekanbaru via Tanjung Buton, a separate roro (KMP Tirus) to Mengkapan and Dumai, ferries to Batam, Karimun and Tanjung Pinang whose fares rose sharply in February 2026, and a long-standing Malaysia crossing to Batu Pahat that may now have a second, unconfirmed route to Kukup; within the Meranti islands, pompong and small ferries link the villages, and becak motor work the town.

How transport works here

7 ways of moving, each with its rule

We confirmed six ways of moving to, from or around Selatpanjang: one by road, four by water and one hired or on demand, from 12 sources. One entry is not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. Two of them run only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. Two need a phone call or a message before you turn up.

The fares were seen in 2011 to 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. Four fares carry no year, because they could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 2 of the 7 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 28 September 2026, and ends with eight things we could not confirm.

Minivan and ferry, Pekanbaru to Selatpanjang via Tanjung Buton

Hotel pickup in Pekanbaru, minivan to Tanjung Buton pier, ferry on to Selatpanjang (Insit terminal)

Book at Sungai Duku Port, Jl. Tanjung Datuk No. 371, Pekanbaru (about 0.55137, 101.46179), or through your hotel. The minivan collects passengers from hotels, then drives about 3.5 hours to Tanjung Buton pier; you pay a small terminal fee and board the ferry. Porti Express, Naga Line and Meranti Jaya Express are named as the ferry companies working this route; Naga Line's contact is +62 853-6353-6555.

When
Reported as roughly three times a week on the ferry leg; confirm current departure days at Sungai Duku Port, since a separate roro (Insit–Mengkapan/Tanjung Buton) also works this same crossing on its own schedule
Takes
About 3h30m minivan, plus several hours by ferry
Fare 2011
Combined minivan-and-ferry ticket; a 2011 fare for the comparable Pekanbaru–Tanjung Balai combination was Rp 265,000. Not confirmed for Selatpanjang or for 2026 prices, which have since risenSeen in 2011: a floor, not a price.

SeasonYear-round; tide- and weather-dependent. BookingSungai Duku Port office in Pekanbaru, or your hotel. Run byPorti Express, Naga Line, Meranti Jaya Express.

Roro KMP Tirus, Insit terminal to Mengkapan (Tanjung Buton)

Insit terminal, Selatpanjang, to Mengkapan, near Tanjung Buton, Siak Regency, Sumatra mainland; the same Insit terminal also runs separate roro sailings to Dumai and to Pecah Buyung

This is the vehicle roro that lets cars and motorbikes reach Sumatra without going via Pekanbaru's Sungai Duku ferry; ask at Insit terminal, a short becak ride from Tanjung Harapan, or the Meranti Dishub (transport department) office for the day's sailing. As of July 2025 the Meranti Dishub had asked for the Insit–Mengkapan sailing to be increased from one to three times a week because of high demand; as of May 2026 the KMP Tirus vessel was running four times a week on this route (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday) after a brief suspension when its propeller fouled on fishing nets.

When
KMP Tirus (Insit–Mengkapan): four sailings a week as of May 2026 (Mon, Tue, Thu, Sat), 07:00 from Insit arriving Mengkapan 11:00, and 12:00 from Mengkapan arriving Insit 17:00. The separate Insit–Dumai roro sails twice a week (Wednesday and Saturday); Insit–Pecah Buyung twice a week. Confirm current days at the terminal, since the schedule has changed more than once in the last year.
Takes
About 4 hours Insit–Mengkapan under normal conditions
Fare
Not confirmed; no passenger or vehicle tariff was given in either source

SeasonYear-round; the May 2026 suspension was a mechanical fault (net-fouled propeller) rather than weather, but tide still governs the roro ramp. BookingAt the Insit terminal on the day of travel. Run byKMP Tirus, under Kepulauan Meranti Dishub / KSOP Selatpanjang regulation.

Ferries to Batam, Karimun and Tanjung Pinang

Tanjung Harapan terminal, Selatpanjang, to Sekupang (Batam), Tanjung Balai Karimun and Tanjung Pinang (Bintan)

Buy at Tanjung Harapan terminal on Jalan Tanjung Harapan. Wikivoyage names MV Dumai Express (+62-765-31820), MV Batam Jet (+62-765-35888), MV Mikonata and MV Batam Line as operators. A fare rise took effect 1 February 2026 across these routes and was contested by Meranti residents as unauthorised; ask the counter which company is sailing that day rather than relying on a printed timetable.

When
Daily; multiple departures, busiest around Chinese New Year, Eid and the year-end holidays
Takes
Sekupang (Batam) about 4-6 hours; Tanjung Balai Karimun 3-4 hours; Tanjung Pinang varies with stops
Fare 2026
From 1 February 2026: Selatpanjang–Bengkalis Rp 200,000 (was Rp 180,000); Selatpanjang–Tanjungbalai Karimun Rp 210,000 (was Rp 180,000); Selatpanjang–Batam Rp 330,000 (was Rp 270,000); Selatpanjang–Tanjungpinang Rp 400,000 (was Rp 330,000). For scale, the unrelated ASDP national network prices Tanjung Pinang–Tanjung Balai Karimun at Rp 48,000 and Tanjung Pinang–Dabo at Rp 51,000, since Selatpanjang itself is not on the ASDP network

SeasonYear-round. BookingAt Tanjung Harapan terminal, or by phone: Dumai Express +62-765-31820, Batam Jet +62-765-35888. Run byMV Dumai Express, MV Batam Jet, MV Mikonata, MV Batam Line.

Malaysia crossing to Batu Pahat

Tanjung Harapan terminal, Selatpanjang, to Batu Pahat Minyak Beku Ferry Terminal, Johor

Tanjung Harapan is the international ferry and immigration point; a visa-on-arrival is available for eligible nationalities. The crossing was run by MV Elucgho and MV Indo Mall (contact HP 016-788 0400 or ling6868@gmail.com); a return ticket bought in Malaysia lets you board either company back, but a ticket bought in Selatpanjang only boards the company you bought it from. Reconfirm at the terminal that this still operates as described, since a second Malaysia service was reported opening in 2026 and residents also reported difficulty getting Malaysia tickets that year (see gaps) – ask the counter which port and company is sailing before buying.

When
Historically described as round-the-clock, every day of the year; this should be reconfirmed at the terminal, since Malaysia–Indonesia crossings across the region were reduced after 2020 and not all resumed to pre-2020 frequency
Takes
About 2h30m
Fare
Not confirmed for 2026; check at the terminal or by phone

SeasonYear-round; the Malacca Strait here is sheltered. BookingAt Tanjung Harapan terminal, or +60 16-788 0400. Run byMV Elucgho and MV Indo Mall.

Pompong and small ferries between the Meranti islands

Selatpanjang to villages on Tebing Tinggi Timur, Rangsang, Padang, Merbau and other Meranti islands

Small wooden pompong and passenger boats leave from wharves near Tanjung Harapan and from village jetties along the Selatpanjang waterfront; there is no printed timetable for most of them, so ask at the wharf or your losmen which boat is going where and wait for it to fill.

When
On demand, departs when full
Takes
30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the island
Fare
Not confirmed; negotiate per person or per boat at the wharf

SeasonYear-round; tide-dependent at many village jetties, and the dry season (roughly June–September) is calmer for small open boats. BookingNone, pay the boatman. Run byIndependent boat owners.

Becak motor and ojek around town

Anywhere within Selatpanjang town

Becak motor (motorised three-wheelers) work the streets of Selatpanjang and can be flagged down anywhere or arranged through a hotel; when floodwater from a high tide (rob) covers the port road, Pelindo has in the past sent free becak to carry passengers across the flooded stretch near the terminal. No meters; agree the fare before riding. Ojek motorcycle taxis cover the same ground faster for one person.

When
On demand, most of the day
Takes
Most town trips 10-20 minutes
Fare 2022

Tides, haze and port fee rises decide whether and how you travel

Tanjung Harapan / Insit terminals and the roadless surrounding islands

Two things not obvious from a schedule alone: first, high tides regularly flood the port road (rob) – on 12 November 2025 floodwater covered the terminal entrance and car park knee-deep for nearly three hours, and Pelindo sent 10 free becak to carry passengers through it; ask locally before a port-day trip in the wet months. Second, the haze season (roughly August–October, worst in dry years) reduces visibility on the water and can delay or ground small boats between islands; check locally rather than assuming the mainland forecast applies. A reported doubling of the Tanjung Harapan port entry pass around September–October 2025 could not be independently confirmed and is recorded in gaps.

Not confirmed

What we could not find out

8 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.

  1. 01

The previous version of this file cited only English Wikivoyage for every claim and gave no fare for four of its seven options; that has been corrected here with Indonesian-language news reached at the publisher (mostly riaupos.co, whose search API resolves to real article URLs) and the ASDP national fare API, but several specifics remain unconfirmed and are flagged below.

  2. 02

Correction: the previous file treated Selatpanjang as having a single Malaysia ferry pairing (Batu Pahat, run 'round-the-clock every day of the year'). Sabang Merauke News and HALLORIAU.COM both reported in 2026 that the vessel MV Oceanna VIII opened a new, separate Malaysia crossing from Selatpanjang to Kukup (Pontian, Johor) under the brand 'Pintas Samudra' ('Kapal MV Oceanna VIII Resmi Berlayar Layani Rute Selatpanjang-Kukup Malaysia', Sabang Merauke News, 2026; 'Ditandai Pelayaran Perdana MV Oceanna VIII, Rute Selatpanjang - Kukup Malaysia Resmi Dibuka', HALLORIAU.COM, 2026); HALLORIAU.COM separately reported Meranti residents finding it hard to get tickets to Malaysia at all in 2026 ('Sejumlah Warga Kepulauan Meranti Keluhkan Sulit Dapat Tiket Kapal ke Malaysia'). Both publishers were Cloudflare-blocked or 404 on direct fetch and their articles could not be reached, so neither the Kukup route's details nor the ticket-shortage report are used as citations in the file itself; the Batu Pahat 'round-the-clock' claim should not be trusted without reconfirming at the terminal.

  3. 03

Correction: the previous file's 'ferry from Dumai to Insit Ferry Port' option conflated Insit (which riaupos.co confirms is the roro terminal used for Insit–Mengkapan/Tanjung Buton and Insit–Dumai sailings, not a Dumai landing) with a separate, longer Dumai crossing. The Insit–Dumai roro is now named directly in the roro option (twice weekly, Wed/Sat, per Dishub Meranti); a standalone passenger ferry direct from Dumai to Selatpanjang, as the old file described, could not be reconfirmed.

  4. 04

Correction: the previous file's 'Sungai Duku ferries run three times a week' figure was unsourced beyond Wikivoyage and its speedboat-vs-bus distinction unverifiable. RIAU1.COM reported a roughly 19% fare rise on a Selatpanjang–Pekanbaru speedboat, and separately that speedboats at Tanjung Harapan do not run on 1 Syawal (Eid) ('Harga Tiket Speedboat Selatpanjang-Pekanbaru akan Naik 19 Persen'; '1 Syawal, Speedboat di Pelabuhan Tanjung Harapan Tak Beroperasi', both RIAU1.COM, 2026), which would mean a direct river speedboat exists alongside the Sungai Duku minivan-and-ferry combination; riau1.com's own search does not expose article URLs to a script and this could not be reached at the publisher, so no option is built on it and it is not currently claimed in the file – ask at Tanjung Harapan whether a direct Pekanbaru speedboat is currently running.

  5. 05

RiauTime.com reported the Tanjung Harapan port entry pass (tarif pass masuk) was raised by about 100% around September–October 2025 ('Pelindo Naikkan Tarif Masuk Pelabuhan Tanjung Harapan hingga 100 Persen', RiauTime.com, 2025). riautime.com returns 404 on direct fetch and its site search could not be reached, so this is not used as a citation and is not reflected in any option's fare field; budget for a separate port pass fee on top of the ticket and ask at the terminal.

  6. 06

ASDP Indonesia Ferry's national ro-ro API (asdp.id/rute/tujuan/) returned no routes at all for SELATPANJANG, TANJUNG BUTON, DUMAI, BATAM or BENGKALIS as port names, meaning Selatpanjang's ferries are run by private/local operators outside the state ro-ro network; only TANJUNG PINANG returned data, used here for comparative Riau Islands fares.

  7. 07

Whether the historic Singapore ferry (suspended since 2020 per Wikivoyage) has resumed by 2026 could not be confirmed either way; ask at the terminal.

  8. 08

cakaplah.com, halloriau.com, riautime.com and goriau.com's wp-json search endpoints were Cloudflare-blocked, 404, or returned no usable article links during this pass, despite carrying several of the most relevant headlines (fare rises, the Kukup route, KMP Tirus). riaupos.co's search API worked and was used wherever it returned a matching article; where it did not, the claim is recorded above by publisher, headline and date rather than cited to an unreachable page.
