Tanjung Balai Karimun
A freight and shipyard port, not a resort island: almost everyone arrives by ferry from Singapore, Batam, Malaysia or the Sumatra coast, and gets around town by mikrolet or ojek rather than any tourist transport.

11 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed ten ways of moving to, from or around Tanjung Balai Karimun: eight by water, one by road and one hired or on demand, from 14 sources. One entry is not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. One of them runs only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. One needs a phone call or a message before you turn up.
The fares were seen in 2014 to 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. Seven fares carry no year, because they could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 1 of the 11 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 28 September 2026, and ends with eight things we could not confirm.

What we could not find out
8 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
The brief's word 'bentor' does not appear to apply to Karimun: news searches turn up 'bentor' as a term for the electric becak scheme on Penyengat island near Tanjung Pinang, not Tanjung Balai Karimun. No source found for a pedal- or motor-becak in Tanjung Balai itself; the confirmed local minibus is the mikrolet/oplet and the confirmed motorcycle taxi is the ojek (conventional and, since July 2023, the Draiv app).
- 02
The ASDP Indonesia Ferry endpoint named in docs/13-api-inventory.md (asdp.id/rute/tujuan/<PORT>) returned HTTP 500 for TANJUNG BALAI KARIMUN, BATAM and TANJUNG PINANG on repeated tries with a browser user-agent (a real server error page, not a block page or a timeout) - this looks like Karimun's routes are private fast-ferry services rather than part of ASDP's government ro-ro network, so the port name may simply not exist in ASDP's list. Could not obtain the literal port-name list to confirm.
- 03
batamnews.co.id returned HTTP 403 over default curl (HTTP/2) but 200 over --http1.1 with a desktop browser user-agent - matches the brief's general note about government/regional sites, worth remembering for future Riau Islands places.
- 04
Current fare and schedule for the Tanjung Balai-Tanjung Pinang (Arena), Tanjung Balai-Dumai and Tanjung Balai-Kukup routes could not be confirmed beyond the (undated in-page) Wikivoyage entry - ask at the Tanjung Balai terminal for current prices and times.
- 05
The Puteri Harbour (Malaysia) ferry's own booking page and the getting-here page linked from Wikivoyage are both gone; puteriharbour.com no longer lists a ferry link on its homepage. Whether this route still operates could not be confirmed one way or the other - ask at the Tanjung Balai terminal.
- 06
No source was found describing how Malacca Strait tides specifically affect the timing of small-boat or local crossings to Kundur or Moro; the brief's suggestion that tides shape scheduling could not be confirmed or ruled out and is not included as a claim.
- 07
Karimun's status as a shipyard and freight island (rather than a tourism destination) is well supported by Wikivoyage describing it as a Free Trade Zone with heavy commerce and by news coverage of port and shipping incidents, but no single source gives current shipyard employment or freight-traffic figures worth quoting.
- 08
Wikivoyage's Karimun page also describes a Pelni boat leaving Tanjung Balai every Wednesday at 8am for Jakarta (31 hours) and every Saturday at 7pm for Belawan, the port for Medan (17 hours), with economy and Class III Wisata fares but no year. pelni.co.id would not resolve or return a schedule page in this pass, so the service could not be confirmed as still running and is deliberately not written up as an option; ask the Pelni agent at the Tanjung Balai port, because if it does still sail it is the only long-haul sea link from the island.
What the planner can route today
The options above live on the place page, not in the departure board: a boat that comes when you phone has no time to show. What the board can do for Tanjung Balai Karimun is this.
