Thasos
Two short car ferries run the mainland link – a frequent 45-minute hop from Keramoti and a longer, thinner run to Kavala – and once ashore, a single ring road, KTEL buses, taxis, and hire cars and scooters cover the island; Kavala airport and Thessaloniki are the real gateways in.

10 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed nine ways of moving to, from or around Thasos: three by water, three by road, two hired or on demand and one under your own steam, from 17 sources. One entry is not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. Four of them run only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. One needs a phone call or a message before you turn up.
The fares were seen in 2020 to 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. Four fares carry no year, because they could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 2 of the 10 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 28 September 2026, and ends with seven things we could not confirm.
By water
Keramoti – Thasos Town (Limenas)
Keramoti port to Thasos Town (Limenas), the short crossing
Ticket office at the Keramoti quay; buy just before departure
- When
- Very frequent – roughly every 60-90 minutes across the day, with more sailings at peak times; the operator's own current schedule (9-28 September 2026) lists 13 departures a day from Limenas and 14 from Keramoti
- Takes
- 45 minutes
- Fare 2026
- Full passenger fare 6.00 EUR, child (5-10) 3.00 EUR, car up to 4.25m 22.00 EUR, car over 4.25m 27.00 EUR, motorcycle up to 250cc 6.00 EUR, bicycle 3.00 EUR; fares include VAT and tickets are sold only at the company offices just before departure, not online
SeasonRuns year-round; this is the crossing described as short and frequent, and is why Thasos is one of the few Greek islands reachable cheaply and often rather than by a once- or twice-a-day boat. The operator's own timetable page only publishes a rolling window of a few weeks ahead (checked in September it covered 9-28 September) and returned no listing at all when a January month was requested, so an exact winter frequency could not be confirmed from a fetched source. BookingNone; walk up and buy at the quay. Run byKavala Maritime Company, trading as Thassos Ferries (Ναυτιλιακή Εταιρεία Καβάλας), a family firm running the crossing since 1971.
Kavala – Skala Prinou
Kavala port to Skala Prinou, about 20 km south of Thasos Town, the long crossing
Kavala ferry terminal below the old town; Skala Prinou ticket office 25930 71160
- When
- Much thinner than the Keramoti run – the operator's current September 2026 schedule shows only 2-3 sailings a day each way (for example 07:15, 12:00 and 16:00 from Prinos on most days, only one or two on others)
- Takes
- About 1.5 hours (Wikivoyage's Thasos article gives this figure; not separately confirmed on the operator's site, which lists times but not a duration)
- Fare 2026
- Full passenger fare 7.00 EUR, child (5-10) 3.50 EUR, car up to 4.25m 22.00 EUR, car over 4.25m 27.00 EUR, motorcycle up to 250cc 7.00 EUR, bicycle 4.00 EUR; VAT included, cash at the quay only
SeasonYear-round, but at a much lower frequency than Keramoti; this is the crossing the brief describes as long and less frequent. BookingNone; walk up and buy at the quay. Run byKavala Maritime Company / Thassos Ferries, the same company as the Keramoti route.
AMIRA (new Keramoti-Thasos vessel)
Keramoti - Thasos Town, added to the Keramoti fleet
One of the vessels now used on the Keramoti crossing; no separate booking, covered by the Keramoti ferry option above
- When
- Joined the existing Keramoti rotation in August 2026; not a new route
- Takes
- 45 minutes, same crossing as the other Keramoti vessels
- Fare 2026
- Same tariff as the Keramoti-Thasos ferry option above
SeasonAdded ahead of the 2026 peak season specifically to handle summer passenger and vehicle volume. BookingNone; walk up and buy at the quay. Run byKavala Maritime Company / Thassos Ferries.
By road
KTEL Kavalas ring-road buses
Circular routes around the island's coastal ring road from Thasos Town (Limenas), serving Panagia, Potamia, Limenaria, Potos, Theologos and other coastal villages
Bus stop/station at Thasos Town; timetables posted at village stops
- When
- Wikivoyage describes only a seasonal 'bus service during summer'; the operator's own site (ktelkavalas.gr) could not be reached to confirm current timetables or year-round service - its domain returned a DNS failure (SERVFAIL) when checked directly and via Google's public DNS-over-HTTPS resolver, not merely a blocked connection
- Takes
- Varies by village; not confirmed from a fetched source
- Fare
- Not confirmed from a fetched source for the island routes
SeasonDescribed as a summer-only service on Wikivoyage; a Greek-language news search turned up a report of Maries village residents petitioning for the KTEL to reach their village at all, suggesting coverage is uneven even in season, but that report could not be resolved to a readable publisher page within this research. Run byKTEL Kavalas (regional bus cooperative).
Island taxis
Anywhere on the island, called from restaurants, bars and supermarkets in any village
Ask at any restaurant, bar or supermarket to call one; ranks in Thasos Town
- When
- On demand
- Takes
- Varies by destination
- Fare 2026
- About 1.5 EUR per km; the Wikivoyage source is undated, so this is only known to be current as of the September 2026 fetch
SeasonYear-round. BookingPhone ahead for late-night trips (after midnight). Run byIndependent licensed taxi drivers.
Thessaloniki – Kavala KTEL coach, onward to the ferries
Thessaloniki Macedonia bus terminal to Kavala, then a local bus or taxi to Keramoti or the Kavala ferry terminal for the crossing to Thasos
Macedonia intercity bus station in Thessaloniki
- When
- Roughly hourly departures from Kavala to Thessaloniki between 06:00 and 20:40, with three daily 'Express' departures that skip intermediate stops
- Takes
- 2 to 2.5 hours on an Express service; up to 3 hours on a regular service that serves villages en route
- Fare 2026
- 15 EUR one-way; the source does not state a year, so this is only known to be current as of the September 2026 fetch and is undated beyond that
SeasonYear-round. BookingNone; buy at the station. Run byKTEL Kavalas.
Hired, booked and on demand
Car hire
Pick-up in Thasos Town, Limenaria, Potos and other larger towns and villages
Multiple local agencies in the main towns; also arranged in advance from the mainland
- When
- On demand
- Takes
- N/A
- Fare
- No current fare confirmed from a fetched source
SeasonYear-round, with far more availability and choice in the summer season. BookingBook ahead in high season. Run byVarious local agencies; several Thasos-based rental firms' own sites did not resolve when checked (DNS failures), so no operator page could be cited directly.
4x4 hire for the mountain and beach dirt roads
Off the ring road to interior villages (Theologos, the Giola pool track) and beaches reachable only by dirt road
Same rental agencies that hire cars, a 4WD specifically requested
- When
- On demand
- Takes
- N/A
- Fare
- No current fare confirmed from a fetched source
SeasonYear-round; the dirt-road beaches and the Giola descent are the reason a 4WD is recommended at all. BookingNone required. Run byVarious local agencies.
On foot, by bike, or otherwise
Scooter and motorbike hire
Same towns as car hire; the practical way to reach mountain villages and dirt-road beaches a car cannot manage
Rental shops in Thasos Town, Limenaria, Golden Beach (Skala Panagia/Potamia) and Potos
- When
- On demand
- Takes
- N/A
- Fare
- No current fare confirmed from a fetched source
SeasonYear-round; most shops trade only in the summer season. BookingNone required, though popular models sell out in August. Run byVarious local agencies.
Rules, permits and closures
Kavala International Airport (Alexander the Great, KVA) as the gateway
Kavala airport (near Chrysoupoli) to Keramoti port, then the ferry to Thasos; or via Kavala city and the Kavala-Prinos ferry
Taxi rank outside arrivals at KVA; airport is about 12 km from Keramoti
- When
- The airport itself has mostly seasonal charter flights from Europe plus daily flights from Athens; there is only one KTEL bus a day from the airport to Kavala city
- Takes
- 12 km from the airport to the Keramoti ferry; no source found gives a taxi journey time for it
- Fare 2020
- Taxi from Kavala airport to Keramoti about 20 EUR; to Kavala city about 40 EUR (figures given in the Thasos Wikivoyage article, undated within the source); Kavala's own Wikivoyage article separately gives an official flat taxi rate of 35 EUR airport-to-city as of August 2020 and warns that unregulated and unmetered taxis operate at the airportSeen in 2020: a floor, not a price.
SeasonYear-round, though charter flight volume is heavily seasonal. BookingNone for taxis; car rental available at the airport. Run byIndependent taxi drivers; KVA is operated by Fraport Greece.
What we could not find out
7 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
No source confirms an exact winter (off-season) sailing frequency for either ferry route: the operator thassos-ferries.gr only publishes a rolling few weeks of timetable at a time and returned 'no itineraries' when a January month was queried in September 2026. Ask at either port ticket office for the current winter schedule.
- 02
ktelkavalas.gr, the KTEL Kavalas operator site that would carry the island's ring-road bus timetable and fares, could not be reached: its domain name failed to resolve (SERVFAIL) both directly and via Google's 8.8.8.8 DNS-over-HTTPS resolver, which points to a genuine outage or a lapsed registration rather than a blocked connection. This means the frequency, stops and fares of the island bus service could not be confirmed beyond Wikivoyage's one-line 'summer service' description. Ask at the KTEL stop in Thasos Town for a current printed timetable.
- 03
A Greek-language news search surfaced a report ('Θάσος: μαζεύουν υπογραφές στις Μαριές για να φτάσει το ΚΤΕΛ στο χωριό τους' - Kavala News) suggesting the KTEL bus does not reach every village and that a signature campaign was needed to extend it to Maries; the underlying article could not be resolved from its Google News redirect to a readable publisher page, so this is recorded as an unconfirmed lead rather than a fact.
- 04
No current, dated fare or named operator was found for car hire, scooter hire or 4x4 hire on the island; several guessed local rental-agency domains failed to resolve. Ask locally or check current listings when planning a trip.
- 05
The 1h30m duration given for the Kavala-Skala Prinou ferry comes from Wikivoyage, not from the operator's own schedule pages, which list times but not journey length.
- 06
Correction to the brief: the brief's phrasing implies two separate ferry companies for the two routes; in fact a single operator, the Kavala Maritime Company (trading as Thassos Ferries), runs both the Keramoti and the Kavala-Prinos crossings.
- 07
The Kavala airport taxi fares (about 20 EUR to the Keramoti ferry, 40 EUR to Kavala city) are undated in the Thasos Wikivoyage article; the option's fare_year is the 2020 date attached to Kavala Wikivoyage's separate 35 EUR official flat rate, so treat all three figures as at least that old. No source gives a taxi journey time between the airport and Keramoti, only the 12 km distance; ask the driver before setting off.
What the planner can route today
The options above live on the place page, not in the departure board: a boat that comes when you phone has no time to show. What the board can do for Thasos is this.
