Mount Athos

Every visitor needs a diamonitirion permit and can only arrive by boat from Ouranoupoli or Ierissos – there is no road in – then moves between Dafni, Karyes and the monasteries by the Mt Athos bus, monastery cars, or on foot; women may not enter at all.

How transport works here

9 ways of moving, each with its rule

We confirmed eight ways of moving to, from or around Mount Athos: four by water, two by road, one hired or on demand and one under your own steam, from 21 sources. One entry is not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. One of them runs only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. Two need a phone call or a message before you turn up.

The fares were seen in 2023; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. Two fares carry no year, because they could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 6 of the 9 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 28 September 2026, and ends with seven things we could not confirm.

Rules, permits and closures

01
permit

Diamonitirion (Mount Athos entry permit)

Issued by the Pilgrims' Bureau in Thessaloniki, collected at Ouranoupoli or Ierissos on arrival

Apply to the Holy Executive of the Holy Mount Athos Pilgrims' Bureau, 109 Egnatia Str, Thessaloniki, by phone or email well ahead; collect the actual diamonitirion in person at the Ouranoupoli or Ierissos office on the day of travel

When
Daily quota: 100 places for Orthodox pilgrims, 10 for non-Orthodox; women may not apply at all
Takes
Valid for a four-day, three-night stay; extensions must be requested from the Holy Community in Karyes
Fare 2023
Friends of Mount Athos list 2023 diamonitirion prices as Orthodox regular €25 / student €10, non-Orthodox regular €35 / student €10; Wikivoyage's undated text instead gives €18 (Orthodox) and €30, reduced to €10 for students (non-Orthodox) – the two disagree and neither carries a clear date for the current rate, so confirm the exact fee with the Bureau when bookingSeen in 2023: a floor, not a price.

SeasonBook up to six months ahead for June–August, when the daily quota fills fastest; a few days' notice can be enough outside summer. BookingPhone +30 2310 252578 or email athosreservation@gmail.com; personal appearance with passport/ID required to collect the printed permit before boarding the ferry. Run byHoly Executive of the Holy Mount Athos Pilgrims' Bureau (government body, not a monastery).

02
ferry

"Agia Anna" ferry, Ouranoupoli – Dafni

Ouranoupoli to Dafni, stopping at Giovantza, Zografou, Kostamonitou, Dochiariou, Xenofontos and Panteleimonos; continues some sailings on to Kafsokalyvia

Buy the ticket at the Athoniki office by the Ouranoupoli pier, next to the Pilgrims' Bureau office, and show the diamonitirion to the ferry officer before boarding

When
One or two sailings a day depending on day of week; Sunday's route runs only as far as the Holy Hermitage of Agia Anna
Takes
About 1h35 to Dafni on the "Agia Anna" timetable (06:30 from Ouranoupoli, 08:05 at Dafni); the Mount Athos Lines ferry listed on the same page runs 09:45 to 11:45, about 2 hours; continuing to Kafsokalyvia takes roughly 5 hours more on the through service
Fare 2023
€7.99 one-way Ouranoupoli–Dafni per the Friends of Mount Athos 2023 cost table; undated on the operator's own siteSeen in 2023: a floor, not a price.

SeasonYear-round. The operator has posted winter service closures in past years, but no closure notice was displayed on its page at the time of this check. BookingNo reservation needed for this regular ferry. Run byMicroathos Shipping Company, which runs the "Agia Anna"; the separate 09:45 sailing listed on the same page is Mount Athos Lines'.

03
speedboat

"Mikra Agia Anna" speedboat, Ouranoupoli – Dafni – Kafsokalyvia

Ticket and reservation through the same Athoniki office at Ouranoupoli pier; arrives at each stop slightly ahead of the slower "Agia Anna" ferry

When
The operator's own notice says the ship temporarily operates only one route daily, until further notice, although its printed table still shows two departures
Takes
Roughly 40 minutes: the operator's timetable leaves Ouranoupoli at 08:00 and departs Dafni for Kafsokalyvia at 08:40, but publishes no arrival time at Dafni

SeasonThe port change to Kafsokalyvia is described as temporary. The operator has posted multi-week annual service closures in past winters, but no such notice is displayed on the page at the time of this check, so do not assume a date. BookingReservation compulsory, up to 10 days ahead, by phone; "please insist" if the line is busy. Run byMicroathos Shipping Company.

Athos footpaths between monasteries

Waymarked paths linking monasteries and sketes across the peninsula, including the wild crossing between Megisti Lavra/Prodromos and Agia Anna known as the Athos Desert

Footpath junctions are signed, almost always in Greek only; the Mount Athos Pilgrim Map (booklet or flat map) and Friends of Mount Athos GPS tracks are the recommended references, not the generic tourist maps sold in Dafni and Karyes

When
Not scheduled – walk when ready, but plan to reach a monastery at least 2.5 hours before sunset since gates close then
Takes
Longest single leg is Agia Anna to Great Lavra at 6–7 hours; the Athos Desert crossing from Megisti Lavra/Prodromos to Agia Anna is about 6 hours

Not confirmed

What we could not find out

7 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.

  1. 01

The diamonitirion fee is inconsistent between sources: Friends of Mount Athos' 2023 cost table gives €25 (Orthodox)/€35 (non-Orthodox) regular, €10 for students either way, while Wikivoyage's undated text gives €18/€30/€10 – confirm the exact current fee with the Pilgrims' Bureau by phone before travelling.

  2. 02

The brief describes 'monastery pickup trucks' moving pilgrims between monasteries; no source found names pickup trucks specifically. Wikivoyage speaks only of 'smaller boats, people carriers and taxis' and the scheduled Mt Athos bus – treat the pickup-truck detail as unconfirmed and ask monastery guest-masters directly.

  3. 03

Winter weather and maintenance cancellations on the Ouranoupoli–Dafni boats could not be documented, and an option asserting them was removed in verification. The two lines that looked like operator notices – 'there will be no routes, due to bad weather' and 'The ship will be absent for its scheduled annual service' – are both inside HTML comments in microathos.gr's page source and are not displayed to a reader; one names a Sunday in November with no year, the other a 23 January to 12 February 2026 window that the operator has since switched off. Neither is evidence of a current or recurring closure. Phone the Athoniki ticket office or the Pilgrims' Bureau before a winter visit.

  4. 04

No fare could be confirmed for the Ouranoupoli sightseeing boat tours (for women and non-permit visitors); ask agencies in Ouranoupoli village directly.

  5. 05

The KTEL Chalkidiki website (ktel-chalkidikis.gr) advertised online booking but its own bus-routes page on ouranoupoli.gr rendered as a broken PHP page with no timetable content, so that route to a live fare/schedule could not be checked directly; the Wikivoyage and mountathosinfos.gr figures used instead may already be stale.

  6. 06

The Friends of Mount Athos cost table carries no date on the page itself (its footer reads 2026); the '2023' attached to every fare taken from it here is this research pass's assumption, not a date the source publishes. Treat all of those figures as undated approximations – the page itself says the prices come from a variety of sources and are subject to change.

  7. 07

mountathosinfos.gr lists a fourth vessel not given its own option here: a Mount Athos Lines speedboat from Ouranoupoli with four daily departures (08:45, 09:35, 10:40, 11:45), separate from Microathos's "Mikra Agia Anna". No fare was found for it. Ask at the Ouranoupoli ticket offices which of the two is sailing on your date.
