Gökçeada
Turkey's largest island has one scheduled link with the world: the Gestaş car ferry from Kabatepe, on the Gallipoli peninsula, into Kuzu Limanı on the island's east coast. It runs six times a day Monday to Thursday and eight times Friday to Sunday under the timetable that took effect on 14 September 2026, and it is the only line Gestaş lists for the island – the summer seabus from Çanakkale that older sources describe is not in the 2026 timetables or fare tables. Foot passengers simply turn up twenty minutes before a sailing; drivers either queue or buy a plate-linked online ticket that is priced dynamically and covers only part of the ship. Winter storms cancel sailings outright, several times most months from November to April. On the island itself there is one taxi rank, a thin village minibus network out of Merkez, and a lot of empty road, so most visitors bring a car on the ferry or hire wheels once ashore. Samothraki is 37 km away and Lemnos not much further, but neither has a scheduled boat to the island; the only regular way to a Greek island from this coast is the summer Limni Express from Çanakkale's Kepez port to Myrina.

11 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed seven ways of moving to, from or around Gökçeada: two by water, three by road and two hired or on demand, from 39 sources. Four entries are not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. One of them runs only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. One needs a phone call or a message before you turn up.
The fares were seen in 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. We rate 6 of the 11 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 22 September 2026, and ends with nine things we could not confirm.
By water
Kabatepe – Gökçeada car ferry (Gestaş)
Kabatepe İskelesi, on the west coast of the Gallipoli peninsula (40.2006, 26.2681), to Kuzu Limanı / Kuzulimanı on Gökçeada (40.2338, 25.9480), 4 km east of the island's main town, Merkez
This is the only scheduled passenger line Gestaş lists for the island, so there is nothing to compare. Kabatepe is a small purpose-built ferry port at the end of a modern side road signposted 'Kabatepe-Gökçeada Feribot' as you approach Eceabat on the D550/E87. There is a ticket office (gişe) at each end and a marshalling yard for vehicles; credit cards are accepted at both Kabatepe and Gökçeada windows. Foot passengers do not need to book at all – Gestaş's own FAQ says being at the pier 20 minutes before departure is enough, and it points out that these are car ferries, so walk-on space is never the constraint. Drivers either join the queue (sıra usulü) and pay cash or card at the gate, or buy an online ticket in advance, which is tied to the number plate and gives priority boarding. At the island end the pier is 4 km from Merkez; minibuses meet the boats, and the road into town is the only one there is.
- When
- Under the timetable in force from 14 September 2026: Monday to Thursday six sailings each way at 07:00, 10:00, 13:00, 16:00, 19:00 and 21:00; Friday, Saturday and Sunday eight each way at 07:00, 09:00, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, 17:00, 19:00 and 21:00. Both directions depart at the same clock times. In high summer the pattern is denser and Gestaş adds unscheduled extra sailings on busy weekends and at religious holidays
- Takes
- About 1h 15m to 1h 30m. Wikivoyage gives 90 minutes; the two-hour departure cycle in each direction at weekends implies something a little under that
- Fare 2026
- Gestaş published tariff seen September 2026, one way unless noted: foot passenger 250 TL – and note that on this line foot tickets are issued as a return and charged at the Kabatepe end; Gestcard foot 225 TL; Gestcard over-65 125 TL; Gestcard student 40 TL; island-resident Adakart foot 100 TL. Motorcycle under 250 cc 260 TL, over 250 cc or ATV 660 TL. Car (1–7 people) 1,400 TL, Adakart car 560 TL. Mid-size vehicle 2,050 TL, coach 4,530 TL, lorry 3,745 TL, articulated lorry 4,990 TL and 7,520 TL over 13.5 m. Tractor or trailer 840 TL. Half a cubic metre of freight 115 TL, a full cubic metre 230 TL. Passengers travelling inside a vehicle are not charged separately on the island lines
SeasonYear-round, but the timetable is cut in mid-September and rebuilt in spring, and winter sailings are frequently cancelled for weather. BookingNot needed on foot. For a vehicle, either queue at the gate or buy online at online.gdu.com.tr/bilet-al; online sales close two hours before departure and the ticket is issued against your number plate with a PNR code. Run byGestaş Deniz Ulaşım Turizm Ticaret A.Ş. (call centre 444 0 752).
Bozcaada, the other Turkish island – Geyikli ferry
Gökçeada to Bozcaada, via Kabatepe, Eceabat, Çanakkale and Geyikli (Yükyeri İskelesi)
There is no boat between Turkey's two inhabited Aegean islands, even though they are 60 km apart and the same company runs both lines. The chain is: ferry to Kabatepe, dolmuş or drive to Eceabat, strait ferry to Çanakkale, then about 70 km south on the E87 to Geyikli and the Bozcaada boat. Allow a full day. The Geyikli – Bozcaada timetable in force from 14 September 2026 is Geyikli departures at 08:00, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00 and 20:00, with an extra 23:00 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday; from Bozcaada at 07:00, 09:00, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, 17:00, 19:00 and an extra 22:00 at weekends. Online tickets work the same way as on the Gökçeada line but close one hour before departure. The summer restriction that bans midibuses, coaches, lorries and plant from the Bozcaada boat was lifted for the season on 14 September 2026, and the Bozcaada return-leg reservation system closed on 15 September; outside those weeks everyone queues.
- When
- Seven to nine sailings a day each way under the September 2026 timetable
- Takes
- About 35 minutes for the Geyikli crossing; a full day for the whole Gökçeada to Bozcaada chain
- Fare 2026
- Gestaş publishes a separate Geyikli – Bozcaada tariff; the Kabatepe – Gökçeada leg is 250 TL on foot and 1,400 TL with a car
SeasonYear-round, with a denser summer timetable and vehicle restrictions in the peak weeks. Bookingonline.gdu.com.tr for vehicles; foot passengers turn up. Run byGestaş Deniz Ulaşım.
Rules, permits and closures
Online vehicle ticket, Gestcard and the island Adakart
Applies to the Kabatepe – Gökçeada line in both directions
Three separate things decide whether your car gets on the boat you want and what it costs. First, the online ticket: it exists only for vehicles, it is bought at online.gdu.com.tr against your number plate, and Gestaş states plainly that it covers only a portion of the ship's capacity, the rest being held back for the queue. It is dynamically priced – the gate price up to 11 days out, 15% above the gate price from 10 to 6 days out, 30% above from 5 days to 1 day out, and 50% above inside the last 24 hours. Sales close two hours before departure. You must be at the pier 30 minutes before and have the PNR scanned at the window 15 minutes before, or the system cancels the ticket. Route, date and time cannot be changed; a plate change can be done by phoning 444 0 752 up to two hours before. Second, Gestcard, the stored-value card that gives a modest discount on most fares. Third, Adakart, the island-resident card, which cuts a car from 1,400 TL to 560 TL and reserves ten vehicle places on every sailing for its holders; it is issued to people with at least six months of registered residence on the island, on production of a residence history document, ID copy and a photo, at the Çanakkale or Lapseki pier offices. Gestaş says explicitly that there is no reservation scheme on this line – only online ticket sales (the return-leg reservation system is a Bozcaada-only arrangement that runs in the busiest weeks and closed for 2026 on 15 September).
- When
- Year-round; matters most from June to early September and at religious holidays, when weekend sailings fill and queues at Kabatepe build
- Takes
- n/a
- Fare 2026
- No fee for the card itself is published. The online ticket costs the gate fare plus 0%, 15%, 30% or 50% depending on how close to departure you buy. Cancellation refunds 70% up to 24 hours before, 50% from 24 hours to 2 hours before, and nothing inside the last 2 hours; there is a free cancellation window in the first 15 minutes after purchase
SeasonYear-round. Bookingonline.gdu.com.tr; card applications at the Çanakkale and Lapseki pier offices or basvuru.gestcard.com.tr. Run byGestaş Deniz Ulaşım.
Weather cancellations – the thing that actually decides whether you travel
Kabatepe – Gökçeada, and the Geyikli – Bozcaada line alongside it
The island's ferry is cancelled for wind often enough that Turkish news agencies run the announcement as a standing story: whole days were lost in November 2025, and again in January, February, March and April 2026. Both directions are usually suspended together, and the decision is normally announced the previous evening for the following day. Three ways to find out, in order of usefulness. Subscribe to the Gestaş WhatsApp channel for the Gökçeada line, linked from the announcements page – the company pushes each cancellation as a notification. Second, the Gestaş mobile app, which carries a 'Sefer Saatleri' section and the same alerts. Third, the announcements page gdu.com.tr/gduonline/duyurular, which carries a daily 'İPTAL/EK SEFER BİLGİSİ' block, or the call centre on 444 0 752. Plan a day of slack into any winter trip off the island; if you have a flight to catch from Istanbul, leave the island the day before.
- When
- Several days a month from November to April; occasional summer days when the meltemi blows hard from the north
- Takes
- n/a
- Fare 2026
- No charge; online tickets for a cancelled sailing are refunded under the cancellation rules
SeasonWorst from November to March. Gökçeada's own Wikivoyage entry notes that ferries are often disrupted by strong winds in winter; summer disruption is the northerly meltemi, which is strongest in the afternoon. Bookingn/a – check before you set out. Run byGestaş Deniz Ulaşım.
The Greek islands – Samothraki and Lemnos
Gökçeada to Samothraki (37 km) and Lemnos; and the working alternative, Çanakkale Kepez port to Myrina on Lemnos
You can see Samothraki from Bademli, and it is 37 km away, but there is no scheduled boat and no open customs post between the two islands. Greek press reported on 20 August 2026 that Samothraki and Imbros had been connected by sea for the first time; that was a one-off rather than the start of a service, and nothing scheduled has followed. The background is that Samothraki's Kamariotissa harbour was still costing the building works for a customs office in August 2025, and a Turkish maritime report of that date states flatly that no direct ferry link between Samothraki and the Turkish coast exists. Assume the same until a Greek operator publishes a timetable. The route that does work from this corner of Turkey is Limni Express, which runs from Çanakkale's Kepez port to Myrina on Lemnos in about 2h 30m: from the operator's own schedule data the 2026 season ran 7 June to 11 October, with Çanakkale departures at 09:30 or 10:00 and Myrina departures at 16:00 or 17:00, concentrated on Thursdays and Sundays with Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Monday sailings in the peak weeks. From Gökçeada that means the ferry back to Kabatepe, the strait crossing to Çanakkale and a night in town. A Schengen visa is needed for holders of ordinary Turkish passports; the ship carries 350 and a hundred seats are held for passengers travelling from the Greek side.
- When
- Gökçeada to a Greek island: none scheduled. Çanakkale Kepez to Myrina: roughly two to four sailings a week in season, none out of season
- Takes
- Kepez to Myrina 2h 30m (150 minutes in the operator's own schedule records)
- Fare 2026
- Limni Express, 2026: €75 one way, €150 return; packages including hotel from €389
Season7 June to 11 October in 2026. Bookinglimniexpress.com or TURYOL. Passport valid six months and, for ordinary Turkish passports, a Schengen visa. Run byLimni Express, run for Çanakkale Liman İşletmesi A.Ş. with TURYOL.
Military ground, and the airstrip that has no flights
Island-wide
Gökçeada guards the entrance to the Dardanelles and was a closed military zone, off limits to foreigners, until 1991. It is open now and needs no permit, but the garrison is still the largest thing on it: a commando regiment sits just north of the Kuzu Limanı road at about 40.2138, 25.9109, an air radar command holds high ground inland at 40.1737, 25.8099, and there are further fenced bases near Dereköy and in the west toward Uğurlu, along with gendarmerie compounds and married quarters in Merkez. Greek regional press reported in August 2026 that the Turkish unit on the island had been upgraded. The rule for visitors is simple and Wikivoyage states it plainly: stay away from military areas, which are very clearly marked and fenced off. Do not photograph installations or the ferry pier area, and treat drone flying as prohibited. The island has an airport, GKD / LTFK, built in 2010 on the plain south of Merkez, but the municipality states that scheduled flights were suspended in 2015 and none has resumed, so the ferry is the only way in for passengers. One other consequence: dangerous goods cannot travel on the ordinary boat – Gestaş handles them on chartered unmanned special sailings on a Çanakkale–Gökçeada routing, at a minimum of 145,000 TL for a return.

By road
Gökçeada aktarma – the Dardanelles crossing bundled with the island ferry
Any Gestaş strait crossing (Çanakkale–Eceabat, Çanakkale–Kilitbahir or Lapseki–Gelibolu) chained to Kabatepe – Gökçeada
Gökçeada sits on the European side of the Dardanelles, so anyone driving from Çanakkale or the Anatolian side has to cross the strait first and then drive about 40 km down the Gallipoli peninsula to Kabatepe. Gestaş treats the two legs as one journey for cardholders. Present a Gestcard at the strait gate and the strait crossing is charged at half the cash tariff, provided the island crossing happens within six hours for a car or motorcycle, or 24 hours for a lorry or articulated lorry. Holders of the island Adakart cross the strait free. The mechanism is the transfer PNR: quote your island ticket's PNR at the strait ticket window before the six hours expire and you pay only the difference. The practical route is Çanakkale ferry to Eceabat, then the D550 north and the signposted side road west to Kabatepe.
- When
- The strait ferries run roughly hourly through the night and every 30–60 minutes by day; Çanakkale–Eceabat and Çanakkale–Kilitbahir also run 'saatsiz', without reference to the timetable, when vehicles pile up
- Takes
- Çanakkale–Eceabat about 25 minutes, then roughly 45 minutes by road to Kabatepe
- Fare 2026
- Strait crossing cash tariff September 2026: foot passenger 40 TL, car 725 TL Çanakkale–Eceabat or 715 TL Çanakkale–Kilitbahir, motorcycle under 250 cc 185 TL. With the Gökçeada aktarma discount a Gestcard car pays half of that; Adakart holders pay nothing on the strait
SeasonYear-round. BookingNone for the strait – turn up and queue. Buy the island leg first if you want the transfer discount applied. Run byGestaş Deniz Ulaşım.
Eceabat – Kabatepe dolmuş (reaching the ferry without a car)
Eceabat, on the east coast of the Gallipoli peninsula, 12 km across the peninsula to Kabatepe ferry pier
Long-distance coaches from Istanbul, Bursa and İzmir do not serve Kabatepe; they serve Çanakkale, and those heading for Çanakkale from the European side stop in Eceabat to cross the strait. Get off in Eceabat and take the dolmuş the last 12 km west across the peninsula to the pier. The dolmuş is timed around the boats rather than to a published timetable, which gives you a rough diagnostic: if nothing is running, there is probably no sailing due for a while. Ask in the square by the Eceabat ferry ramp for 'Kabatepe'. Coming the other way, the same minibuses meet arriving ferries for the run back to Eceabat and the Çanakkale boat. Wikivoyage notes that there may be a through bus from Istanbul connecting with the ferries, but that could not be confirmed for 2026.
- When
- Around ferry departures and arrivals; sparse at other times and in winter
- Takes
- About 20 minutes for the 12 km
- Fare 2026
- Not published; expect a short-hop dolmuş fare paid in cash to the driver
SeasonYear-round, thinner in winter. Run bylocal dolmuş operators.
Island minibuses out of Merkez
Merkez (also called Çınarlı, 40.194, 25.905) to Kuzulimanı 4 km east, Yenibademli and Kaleköy 3 km north, Eşelek and Aydıncık (Kefalos beach) in the south, and Dereköy and Uğurlu in the west
Merkez is the island's crossroads and the hub of the whole minibus network; the stand is in the middle of the town, and the drivers are the people to ask, because nothing is published. The municipality has an 'Otobüs Saatleri' page on gokceada.bel.tr, but it is empty – there is no timetable on it. The pattern reported by Wikivoyage is: several runs a day down to the harbour at Kuzulimanı, roughly every couple of hours north to Yenibademli and Kaleköy, and only one or two a day south to Eşelek and Aydıncık or west to Dereköy and Uğurlu. There is no service at all to the old Greek villages of Zeytinli and Tepeköy; the Uğurlu minibus will drop you at the lane ends and you walk up. Minibuses also meet the ferries at Kuzulimanı for Merkez, Yenibademli and Kaleköy. The asking procedure that works: at the Merkez stand or at your guesthouse, name the village and ask 'son dönüş kaçta?' – what time is the last one back – because being stranded in a half-empty village at 17:00 is the real risk, not the outward trip.
- When
- Several a day to Kuzulimanı; about every two hours to Kaleköy; one or two a day to the south and west villages; none to Zeytinli or Tepeköy
- Takes
- Merkez to Kuzulimanı about 10 minutes, to Kaleköy about 10 minutes, to Uğurlu around 40 minutes
- Fare 2026
- Not published
SeasonYear-round, with more runs in summer. Wikivoyage warns that in winter the roads are deserted. BookingNone – pay the driver. Run bylocal minibus cooperative.
Hired, booked and on demand
Gökçeada taxi
Anywhere on the island; the usual runs are Kuzulimanı to Merkez, Merkez to Kaleköy and Merkez to Aydıncık
There is a taxi rank in Merkez at roughly 40.1936, 25.9049, mapped with the telephone number +90 286 887 3391. Taxis also wait at Kuzulimanı when a ferry is due. Wikivoyage's summary is blunt and still fits: taxis are few and expensive. If you are arriving on a late boat and staying outside Merkez, ring ahead or ask your guesthouse to send someone, because there is no rank at the pier outside ferry times.
- When
- On call; a handful of cars for the whole island
- Takes
- Kuzulimanı to Merkez about 10 minutes
- Fare 2026
- Not published; agree the price before setting off
SeasonYear-round. BookingPhone +90 286 887 3391, or ask your accommodation. Run byGökçeada Taksi.
Bringing or hiring your own wheels
Island-wide; the island is about 30 km end to end with one ring of asphalt
Given one or two minibuses a day to the western villages and a taxi fleet you could count on one hand, most visitors solve the problem with a vehicle. Two ways. Bring one on the ferry – Gestaş carries cars for 1,400 TL, motorcycles under 250 cc for 260 TL and over 250 cc for 660 TL, and charges nothing for the people inside the car, which makes a shared car the cheapest way for a group to reach the island at all. Or hire on the island: agencies operate in Merkez and around Kaleköy, and several guesthouses rent bicycles – the Petrino hotel in Merkez advertises bike hire. No island hire firm could be verified online for 2026, so the reliable method is to have your guesthouse arrange a car or scooter before you sail; on an island of 10,000 people this is a phone call, not a booking system. Fuel and cash are the practical constraints: many places on the island take cash only, and Wikivoyage advises carrying extra because neither the ATMs nor the ferries always work smoothly.
- When
- Ferry vehicle space is the binding constraint in July and August, not the availability of cars
- Takes

What we could not find out
9 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
Correction to the brief: there is no short-versus-long choice of crossings any more. Gestaş's 2026 line list, timetable page and fare tables all show exactly one island route, Kabatepe – Gökçeada. The summer waterbus from Çanakkale that Wikivoyage and the municipality's undated ulaşım page describe does not appear anywhere in the 2026 timetables or tariffs; the only Çanakkale – Gökçeada movements Gestaş still documents are chartered dangerous-goods special sailings. Treat the Çanakkale seabus as suspended until Gestaş reinstates it.
- 02
Correction to the brief: Gestaş operates no vehicle reservation system on the Gökçeada line. Its own rules say so in as many words – there is only online ticket sales, with dynamic pricing, and online tickets cover a portion of the ship while the rest is kept for the queue. The reservation scheme people describe belongs to Bozcaada return sailings and runs only in the weeks the company announces; for 2026 it closed on 15 September.
- 03
Exact crossing time for Kabatepe – Gökçeada is not published by Gestaş. Wikivoyage's 90 minutes is the only figure found; the two-hour weekend departure cycle suggests the crossing itself is nearer 75 minutes. Ask at the Kabatepe gişe or on 444 0 752.
- 04
The summer (roughly June to mid-September) Kabatepe – Gökçeada timetable could not be captured – the operator replaces the page when a new tariff starts, and the version now online is the one valid from 14 September 2026. Check gdu.com.tr/gduonline/sefer-tarifeleri again in May, or the Gestaş mobile app's Sefer Saatleri section.
- 05
No island minibus timetable is published anywhere. The municipality's own Otobüs Saatleri page is blank. Frequencies here come from Wikivoyage and should be checked at the Merkez stand; the number to ask for is the last return of the day.
- 06
No Gökçeada car, scooter or bicycle hire firm could be verified online for 2026, and OpenStreetMap has no rental point mapped on the island. Arrange hire through your accommodation before you sail.
- 07
Island minibus and taxi fares are not published. Both are cash.
- 08
Greek press reported a first Samothraki – Imbros sea crossing on 20 August 2026, but the article itself could not be retrieved (the publisher's search is broken and its archive is not addressable), so the vessel, operator and whether any repeat is planned are unknown. The customs office at Kamariotissa was still being costed in August 2025. Check Greek Evros and Samothraki outlets, or ask at the harbourmaster's office in Kamariotissa.
- 09
Whether foot passengers can buy the Kabatepe – Gökçeada ticket as a single rather than the stated return is unclear; the tariff note says foot tickets are issued as a return and charged at Kabatepe.
What the planner can route today
