Sossusvlei

There is no public transport of any kind to Sossusvlei – no bus, no shared taxi, no local minibus. Everyone arrives either in a hire car they drive themselves, on a scheduled tourist shuttle or guided tour from Windhoek or Swakopmund, or by light aircraft; the last 5 km of sand inside the park is covered by a 4x4 park shuttle or not at all.

How transport works here

8 ways of moving, each with its rule

We confirmed seven ways of moving to, from or around Sossusvlei: three hired or on demand, one by road, two by air and one under your own steam, from 26 sources. One entry is not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. Three of them run only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. Two need a phone call or a message before you turn up.

The fares were seen in 2021 to 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. One fare carries no year, because it could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 5 of the 8 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 21 September 2026, and ends with eight things we could not confirm.

Rules, permits and closures

01
permit

Sesriem gate, park permit and the sunrise rule

Sesriem entrance gate on the C27, then 65 km to the Sossusvlei 2x4 car park

The gate and permit office are at Sesriem, roughly -24.487, 15.798, next to the petrol station. Buy the permit at the office just inside the gate; outside the park the Ministry offices in Windhoek (corner of Bismarck Street and Sam Nujoma Avenue) and Swakopmund (Uhland Street) also sell them. The outer gate opens at sunrise and closes at sunset. Only guests of the two Namibia Wildlife Resorts properties inside the gate – Sesriem Campsite and Sossus Dune Lodge – can be on the park road before sunrise, which is the only way to reach the dunes for first light. Private lodges outside the gate advertise that they are closer, but they queue at the same gate.

When
Gate open sunrise to sunset; in practice around 07:30 in midsummer daylight terms
Takes
About one hour from the gate to the 2x4 car park, 65 km, tarred except the last 5 km
Fare 2021
Namib-Naukluft park fee for a foreign adult N$150 per 24 hours (N$100 entrance plus N$50 conservation), SADC nationals N$100, Namibians N$50; vehicle of 10 seats or fewer N$50; children 16 and under freeSeen in 2021: a floor, not a price.

SeasonYear-round. Good rains, roughly once in seven years around December and January, can flood the Tsauchab and close sections of road. BookingPermit bought at the gate, no advance booking; beds inside the gate must be booked ahead through nwr.com.na. Run byMinistry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism; gate and camps run by Namibia Wildlife Resorts.

Hired, booked and on demand

02
private hire

Self-drive hire car, and the 2x4 versus 4x4 split

Windhoek or Swakopmund to Sesriem, then the park road to Sossusvlei

Pick up at Hosea Kutako International Airport, Windhoek city centre or Swakopmund. A 2x4 sedan or crossover gets you all the way to Sesriem and on to the 2x4 car park 60 km inside the park; it will not get you through the last 5 km of deep soft sand to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. For that you need a genuine 4x4 and some idea how to use it – burying a rented car in that sand is routine. Gravel roads chew tyres and windscreens: check the spare is the same type as the road wheels and that the wheel-changing tools are complete before you leave the depot, and read the rental agreement for what the company will charge you for tyre and windscreen damage.

When
On demand; book weeks ahead for the July to October peak
Takes
Windhoek to Sesriem is the better part of a day, about 5 hours driving; Swakopmund to Sesriem about 5 hours
Fare 2026
Namibia2Go 2026 rack rates, N$ per day: 2x4 Toyota Corolla Cross N$1,395 low season and N$1,860 high season; 4x4 Toyota Fortuner or Hilux double cab N$2,400 low and N$3,200 high; 4x4 Suzuki Jimny from N$1,268 low

SeasonYear-round. Avoid driving at night because of wildlife on the road. Gravel speed limit is 80–100 km/h and that is faster than most visitors can safely drive. BookingOnline with the rental company; Namibia2Go quotes zero-excess cover, no deposit and unlimited kilometres. Run byNamibia2Go (Gondwana), Europcar, Windhoek Car Hire, SANI and others.

03
offroad 4x4

Park shuttle, 2x4 car park to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei

End of the tarred road (the 2x4 car park) to Deadvlei and Sossusvlei, about 5 km each way

Drive or be driven to the 2x4 car park 60 km inside the gate and leave the car there. Open 4x4 vehicles wait at the end of the tar and run back and forth all morning. Two stops: Deadvlei first, then Sossusvlei. Pay the driver. The alternative is a 10 km return walk along the sand track with no shade and no facilities.

When
Regular shuttles through the morning, no timetable – they go when they fill
Takes
10–15 minutes each way
Fare 2025
N$260 per person, children free (seen December 2025); N$180 per person was the rate reported in December 2023

SeasonYear-round, daylight only. BookingNone, pay at the car park. Run byNamibia Wildlife Resorts concession operators.

04
tour package

Guided camping safari from Windhoek or Swakopmund

Windhoek to Sesriem, a full day at Sossusvlei, then on to Swakopmund

Sossusvlei is too far from either city for a genuine road day trip, so the standard product is a two- or three-day guided run in a converted bus with camping at Sesriem. Chameleon Safaris picks up from accommodation inside Windhoek city limits at 07:00 and drops at Swakopmund accommodation at the end; their office is at 8 Ferry Street, Windhoek. The guide drives, buys the park permits and puts you on the 4x4 shuttle for Deadvlei.

When
Chameleon's budget Sossusvlei camping safari departs Windhoek every Wednesday at 07:00
Takes
3 days: 320 km to Sesriem, 120 km in the park, 350 km to the coast
Fare 2026
Listed at 12,000 per person sharing for the 3-day budget camping safari and 19,600 for the Sossusvlei Express, in Namibian dollars; park entry fees included, sleeping bag hire and tips are not

SeasonYear-round weekly departures; no children under 5. Bookingchameleonsafaris.com, single supplement on request. Run byChameleon Safaris; Wild Dog Safaris and others run comparable trips.

chartered flight

Light aircraft: Sesriem airstrip, air taxi and scenic flights

Eros Airport Windhoek or Swakopmund Airport to the Sossusvlei airstrips, or a return scenic loop over the dunes

Two airstrips serve the Sesriem area, the nearer one about -24.491, 15.818 on the Sesriem road. Scenic Air sells the Tiras Taxi, a seat-in-plane service between Eros Airport and the greater Sossusvlei area including Wolwedans, returning to Eros or Hosea Kutako; their Windhoek desk is at the Northern Hangars, Aviation Road, Eros Airport, and Swakopmund is Hangar 58. Lodges arrange the airstrip-to-lodge road transfer. Scenic flights over the dune sea are sold in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, not in the park itself.

When
On demand and by charter; the Tiras Taxi runs to seat availability rather than a public timetable
Takes
Sossusvlei scenic flight from Swakopmund 2h 12m on Scenic Air's routing, quoted as 2h 15m by Charly's
Fare 2026
Sossusvlei scenic flight N$7,000 per person based on 5 passengers per plane, valid to 28 February 2027 (Charly's Desert Tours, Swakopmund). Tiras Taxi and charter fares on enquiry.

SeasonYear-round, weather permitting. Bookingscenic-air.com, windhoek@scenic-air.com, +264 61 249 268; or through a Swakopmund agent. Run byScenic Air (ASL 00076, AOC/013/2013); sold in Swakopmund by Charly's Desert Tours and others.

balloon

Hot air balloon at sunrise

Launch sites on the Kulala Wilderness Reserve between Sesriem and Sossusvlei, or the northern NamibRand

Meet at the Namib Sky office 20 km south of Sesriem on the C27 for the pre-flight briefing and coffee; phone the day before to confirm the meeting time, because the launch site depends on wind direction. Transfers from selected lodges can be arranged at extra cost and are availability-dependent. Landing is followed by a breakfast in the open and a drive back to the meeting point.

When
Daily at sunrise, weather permitting; largest baskets take 18 passengers
Takes
About one hour in the air, most of the morning door to door
Fare 2026
N$10,720 per person, quoted as valid until the end of June 2027; includes reserve and park fees, breakfast and VAT. Children pay the full adult fare and must be over 6 years or 120 cm.

SeasonYear-round but weather dependent; the pilot cancels unsafe conditions and refunds the flight, though a booked transfer fee still stands. Bookingballoon-safaris.com or namibsky.com, info@namibsky.com, +264 81 304 2205; payment is taken after the flight. Run byNamib Sky Balloon Safaris, Namibian CAA non-scheduled air service licence 29, AOC NCAA/AOC/024/2013.

hitchhiking

Hitching in to Sesriem

C14 to Solitaire, then the C19 south to Sesriem, which sits on the C27

Solitaire is at the C19 turnoff of the C14 between Walvis Bay and Maltahöhe and is the only place on the route with fuel, a shop and a steady trickle of stopping traffic, so it is where a hitch is realistically arranged. Almost everyone who passes is another tourist in a full hire car. Namibians rarely visit the park, so there is no local traffic to ride. Expect to be asked for a share of the fuel.

When
Very thin. Wikivoyage warns you could stand for days trying to leave Sossusvlei by thumb.
Takes
Unpredictable
Fare
Usually a contribution to the driver's petrol; no set amount found

SeasonWorst in the low season when visitor traffic drops; carry far more water and food than you think you need. Run bynone.

Not confirmed

What we could not find out

8 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.

  1. 01

The brief mentioned a D826 to Sossusvlei and hitching on the C19 and D826. Only the C19 (Solitaire turnoff of the C14) and the C27 (at Sesriem) could be confirmed from a source; the Sesriem to Sossusvlei park road number was not verified, so it is not stated. OpenStreetMap Overpass was unreachable to check.

  2. 02

Exact clock times for the inner gate used by Sesriem Campsite and Sossus Dune Lodge guests are not published by Namibia Wildlife Resorts online. The rule that only guests inside the gate can reach the dunes for sunrise is well sourced, but the actual opening time (commonly reported as about an hour before the outer gate) was not confirmed. Ask reservations@nwr.com.na or the Sesriem permit office.

  3. 03

Namibia Wildlife Resorts does not publish the 2x4 car park shuttle fare on nwr.com.na; the N$260 figure is a December 2025 traveller report and the N$180 figure a December 2023 one. Treat as a range and expect it to have risen.

  4. 04

The Ministry park fee schedule found is the one effective 1 January 2021 and is still the document linked from nwr.com.na. No later tariff was located, so the N$150 foreign adult figure may be out of date.

  5. 05

A 'Geluk airstrip' near Sossusvlei could not be found in any gazetteer; two strips named Sesriem exist in OpenStreetMap. Lodge-owned strips in the area are not individually documented.

  6. 06

Chameleon Safaris prints its tour prices with a dollar sign without naming the currency. Read in context they are Namibian dollars, but confirm at booking.

  7. 07

Scenic Air publishes no fare for the Tiras Taxi seat-in-plane service; it is quoted on enquiry.

  8. 08

No scheduled intercity bus, shared taxi or combi serves Sesriem. Intercape's Namibian network does not reach it, and TransNamib has run no scheduled passenger trains since July 2023, so there is no rail option either.
