Príncipe

One STP Airways hop a day from São Tomé is the only fast way in; everyone else waits for a cargo boat, and the island's single port has just been out of action after a supply ship sank at the dock.

How transport works here

7 ways of moving, each with its rule

We confirmed six ways of moving to, from or around Príncipe: one by air, three by water and two hired or on demand, from 13 sources. One entry is not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. Four of them run only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be.

Seven fares carry no year, because they could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 1 of the 7 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 28 September 2026, and ends with eight things we could not confirm.

One way

By air

01
scheduled flight

STP Airways São Tomé – Príncipe hop

São Tomé International Airport (TMS) to Príncipe Airport (PCP)

Book directly with STP Airways (or Afrijet, which also flies the route) – most Príncipe hotels will not sell you the seat themselves

When
Daily except Tuesdays as of 2026, on a small aircraft; STP Airways' own published timetable is stale (last dated 30 Mar 2024) and showed 5 days a week plus a reduced Saturday pair, so treat the exact weekly pattern as unconfirmed and check before flying
Takes
35–40 minutes
Fare
undated – no current one-way fare could be confirmed from either operator's site

Seasonyear-round. Bookingbook directly on the STP Airways or Afrijet website; 15 kg baggage allowance on the domestic leg. Run bySTP Airways (domestic flights also sold via Afrijet).

By water

02
cargo boat

Inter-island cargo boat, São Tomé – Príncipe

São Tomé port to Príncipe's single port at Santo António

Ask at São Tomé's port for the next cargo sailing to Príncipe; there is no public timetable

When
irregular, tied to cargo demand; a passenger service on this route was reported restarting in March 2023 after a four-year gap, which shows how unreliable the link has been
Takes
about 10 hours, usually overnight
Fare
undated – no fare could be confirmed

Seasonyear-round, but the crossing and the port both depend on sea conditions and on Príncipe's port being usable (see service_status entry). Bookingnone formal; pay and board at the dock. Run bynot confirmed; the vessel involved in the August 2026 sinking is named only as "Rehoboth" in local press.

03
speedboat

Chartered fast boat, São Tomé – Príncipe

São Tomé to Príncipe, same crossing as the cargo boat but by faster charter vessel

Arrange through a São Tomé dive or boat operator; not a scheduled public service

When
on demand, charter only
Takes
about 3.5 hours
Fare
undated – no fare could be confirmed

Seasonyear-round, sea-state dependent. Bookingcharter in advance through a boat operator in São Tomé. Run bynot confirmed; charter operators only.

04
boat

Hired boat to beaches and islets

Santo António area out to beaches such as Banana Beach and Burra Beach, and to small islets off the coast

arrange through your hotel or a local boatman on the waterfront; there is no scheduled service

When
on demand
Takes
varies by destination
Fare
undated – no published fare found

Seasonyear-round, sea-state dependent; the dry season (June–September) has the calmest conditions, the green season falls in April and October–November. Bookingarrange locally, no advance booking system. Run byindependent boat owners.

Rules, permits and closures

05
service status

Príncipe's only port blocked by a sunk supply ship

Santo António port, Príncipe

not applicable – this is a status, not a service to book

When
single event, ongoing as of late August 2026; check locally before planning any boat crossing or relying on the port for supplies
Takes
not applicable
Fare
not applicable

Seasonnot seasonal – the trigger was an accident, not weather: the inter-island cargo vessel Rehoboth holed its hull and sank at the dock while docking on the evening of 20 August 2026 (the Thursday before the 26 August report), blocking the island's only port and threatening fuel and food supply. Run byRegional Secretariat for Infrastructure (Secretário Regional das Infraestruturas) is the authority quoted managing the response.

2 ways

Hired, booked and on demand

06
private hire

Hired driver, car or motorbike, around Príncipe

Santo António and around the island, including to Belo Monte and Bom Bom

ask at your guesthouse or hotel, or in Santo António for a driver with a car or motorbike; resort transfers (e.g. Bom Bom, Belo Monte) are pre-arranged by the hotel and included for their guests

When
on demand
Takes
roughly 20 minutes from the airport to Bom Bom, roughly 40 minutes to Belo Monte
Fare
undated – no published tariff found; taxi and driver fares in Príncipe appear to be negotiated locally rather than metered

Seasonyear-round; many of the island's roads are unpaved. Bookingnone for independent drivers, pay directly; hotel transfers are booked with the stay. Run byindependent drivers; hotel-arranged transfers for Príncipe Collection properties (Bom Bom, Belo Monte, Roça Sundy, Sundy Praia).

07
moto taxi

Motoqueiro (moto-taxi) around Santo António

Santo António and short hops around the island

flag one down in Santo António; moto-taxi drivers are a recognised local trade that the regional government negotiates fuel and pricing issues with directly

When
on demand, informal
Takes
varies by trip
Fare
undated – no published fare table found; fares are set informally and were under renegotiation with the regional trade directorate as of mid-2025 over fuel costs

Seasonyear-round. Bookingnone, pay the driver. Run byindependent motoqueiros.

What we could not find out

8 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.

  1. 01

No published tariff for taxis or moto-taxis in Santo António could be found; ask locally on arrival, expect to negotiate.

  2. 02

The brief's premise that moving around Príncipe means only a shared taxi, a lift or walking could not be independently confirmed – sources found confirm hired drivers, moto-taxis and boat hire, but no source documents hitchhiking or walking as a normal way to get around the island. Ask locally whether informal lifts are common.

  3. 03

Road condition and 4x4 need on the roads south towards Belo Monte and beyond could not be confirmed beyond Wikivoyage's general note that many of Príncipe's roads are unpaved; ask at your hotel about current road state before self-driving.

  4. 04

STP Airways' own /horarios/ page is stale: its most recent published period for the São Tomé–Príncipe flight ends 30 March 2024. Current-day frequency here is instead taken from Príncipe Collection's live 'getting here' pages (daily except Tuesday, as of September 2026) – this is a correction to rely on the resort operator's page over the airline's own outdated schedule.

  5. 05

A VOA Português audio item titled 'Quatro anos depois, retomada a ligação marítima entre as ilhas de São Tomé e Príncipe' (9 March 2023) indicates the passenger/cargo maritime link had been suspended for about four years before that; the page itself carries no transcript, so no further detail (route, vessel, fare) could be confirmed from it.

  6. 06

RFI reported (headline only, in Portuguese: 'Único porto da ilha do Príncipe bloqueado com navio encalhado há uma semana', dated 26 August 2026) on the same port blockage described in the service_status entry; rfi.fr returned HTTP 403 to every user agent and HTTP version tried, so its text could not be verified and is not cited as a source here – the Telanon Sociedade article covers the same event and was reachable.

  7. 07

No source could confirm a specific Óbô Príncipe Natural Park entry permit or fee separate from the Príncipe Collection hotels' €25-per-guest-per-night Conservation and Communities Contribution, which funds conservation but is a hotel charge, not a park gate permit; ask the national park office in Santo António directly.

  8. 08

Fuel and goods shortages on Príncipe linked to the sunk-ship port closure may still be affecting supply and prices as this file is not being actively re-checked; confirm current port status before travel.

What the planner can route today

The options above live on the place page, not in the departure board: a boat that comes when you phone has no time to show. What the board can do for Príncipe is this.
