South Luangwa National Park and Mfuwe
Almost everyone arrives on a Proflight Jetstream from Lusaka, 1h10m, and is met at Mfuwe airport by a camp vehicle that is already part of the safari – 25 to 45 minutes of road to the lodges along the Luangwa, and two to four hours further by game drive if you are going on to a bushcamp. There is a real overland alternative and it is cheaper than its reputation: the Great East Road to Chipata is tarred, the 123 km Chipata to Mfuwe road has been tarred the whole way for some years now, and the Jonda bus runs Lusaka to Mfuwe in a single 12-hour day, leaving Lusaka Intercity at 05:00. From Chipata there is a 14:00 Green Bus and shared taxis that go when full. Malawi is the other doorstep – Lilongwe is five to six hours by road through the Mchinji and Mwami border posts, or 35 minutes on a seat-in-charter. Inside the park the rules do the deciding: a day permit runs 06:00 to 18:00, self-drivers pay more and must be in a 4x4, and nobody walks without a professional guide and an armed DNPW scout, which is how the walking safari the valley invented still works. From January to March the dirt roads in the park stop being roads, several camps shut, and the flights thin to about three days a week.

12 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed nine ways of moving to, from or around South Luangwa National Park: two by air, three by road, two hired or on demand, one under your own steam and one by water, from 36 sources. Three entries are not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. Four of them run only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. One needs a phone call or a message before you turn up.
The fares were seen in 2024 to 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. Six fares carry no year, because they could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 5 of the 12 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 28 September 2026, and ends with nine things we could not confirm.
By air
Proflight Zambia, Lusaka to Mfuwe (MFU)
Lusaka Kenneth Kaunda (LUN) to Mfuwe International (MFU), direct, 1h 10m
Book on proflight-zambia.com or through your camp – most Mfuwe camps are Proflight booking agents and get last-minute specials. Flights P0 804 (10:35) and P0 808 (16:35) run daily through the dry season; the return legs are P0 805 at 12:20 and P0 809 at 18:20. Mfuwe has an all-weather bitumen runway, two banks in the terminal and a camp vehicle waiting for every arriving guest.
- When
- Twice daily June to October; an early P0 800 at 06:45 is added on some days in May, June and November. From November to February the pattern drops to roughly three or four days a week, and January to February is the thinnest: 804 and 805 on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday only
- Takes
- 1h 10m
- Fare 2026
- US$307 per person Lusaka to Mfuwe, US$305 the other way, US$494 between Livingstone and Mfuwe via Lusaka; children under 18 discounted
SeasonYear-round, but the timetable is seasonal and thins sharply in the green season. BookingOnline, through a camp acting as agent, or in a GDS. Checked baggage 23 kg plus 5 kg hand luggage; extra allowance can be bought. Soft bags are strongly preferred. Run byProflight Zambia (P0).
Lilongwe to Mfuwe seat-in-charter
Lilongwe Kamuzu International, Malawi, to Mfuwe, about 35 minutes
There is no scheduled airline on this pair. Nyasa Express sells seats on a charter between Lilongwe and Mfuwe, with onward Malawi connections to Likoma Island, Monkey Bay, Nyika and Liwonde; Ulendo is the other Malawian operator camps name. Book through your camp, which will confirm whether the flight has the two passengers it needs before it goes.
- When
- On demand, seasonal; it flies when the minimum is met, so a solo traveller may be waiting for someone else to book
- Takes
- about 35 minutes
- Fare 2026
- US$437 per person each way plus US$40 per person airport taxes, minimum two passengers; discounts for children under 12
SeasonMainly the dry season; confirm in the green season. BookingCompulsory in advance through the operator or your camp – nothing is sold at Mfuwe airport. Run byNyasa Express; Ulendo also flies Malawi charters into Mfuwe.
By road
Jonda bus, Lusaka to Mfuwe direct
Lusaka Intercity Bus Terminal (Dedan Kimathi Road, Kamwala) to Mfuwe, via Chipata
Go to the Intercity terminal and ask for the Jonda bus to Mfuwe – it is the only through service, and it goes on to Mfuwe rather than terminating at Chipata like most eastbound coaches. Tickets are sold at the counter in Lusaka and at the Mfuwe bus stop for the return. Phone the operator on +260 96 545 1224 a day or two ahead. Tell your camp you are coming by bus; from the Mfuwe stop it is a five-minute drive to the riverside camps and they will collect you.
- When
- Daily, leaving Lusaka 05:00 and reaching Mfuwe around 17:00; a return service leaves Mfuwe early in the morning
- Takes
- about 12 hours
- Fare
- Not published by the camps that list the service; buy at the terminal counter
SeasonYear-round, but the Great East Road is cut by washouts in the January to March rains. BookingAt the bus station, or by phoning the operator in advance. Run byJonda Bus.
Chipata to Mfuwe minibuses
Chipata Downtown bus station to Mfuwe village, 123 km on the tarred M12 via the Lundazi Road turn-off
Two kinds run. The Green Bus leaves Chipata Downtown Station at 14:00 every day (phone +260 97 785 9357). Beside it are ordinary minibuses that only leave when full, and a long-running early-afternoon service that returns from Mfuwe at 05:30. Coming back at night, minibuses leave Mfuwe around 18:30 to 20:00 and drop you at the Chipata bus stand, where you can buy a morning Lusaka ticket and sleep on the bus rather than look for a room after dark.
- When
- Green Bus daily at 14:00 from Chipata; other minibuses several times a day, leaving when full
- Takes
- 2 to 3 hours
- Fare 2024
- K150 Chipata to Mfuwe; expect to be asked for K50 more to be dropped at your lodge gate
SeasonYear-round; slower and occasionally interrupted in the January to March rains. BookingNone for the minibuses, pay the conductor. Phone the Green Bus a day ahead if you want a seat held. Run byGreen Bus and independent minibus owners.
Chipata shared taxis to Mfuwe
Chipata to Mfuwe, leaving from the M12 under the big baobabs beside the park
Walk out along the Chipata to Mfuwe road to the stand under the baobabs, say Mfuwe, and wait. They are saloon cars, not minibuses, and they go when the last seat sells. Shared taxis also run all day in the other direction, from Mfuwe back to Chipata. In town the cabs are painted a conspicuous blue and have no meters.
- When
- Through the day, leaving when full
- Takes
- 2 to 3 hours
- Fare 2024
- K150 per seat Chipata to Mfuwe
SeasonYear-round. BookingNone, pay the driver. Run byindependent owner-drivers.
Hired, booked and on demand
Camp transfers from Mfuwe airport
Mfuwe International Airport to the camps along the Luangwa, and on into the park
You do not arrange this at the airport – your camp sends a vehicle and its name is on a board in the tiny arrivals hall. Almost every camp includes the transfer in its rate. The riverside camps at the main gate are 25 to 45 minutes away; if you are going on to a bushcamp you stop at the gateway lodge for refreshments and then continue by open game-viewing vehicle, which is a game drive rather than a shuttle run.
- When
- On demand, meeting every scheduled arrival
- Takes
- 25 to 45 minutes to the Mfuwe gate camps; 75 minutes to 4 hours onward to a bushcamp
- Fare
- Included in the rate at most camps; separate transfers around the valley are charged by arrangement
SeasonYear-round for the camps that stay open. BookingTell the camp your flight number when you book; they will not meet a flight they do not know about. Run bythe camps themselves, plus a few local vehicle operators in Mfuwe.
Self-drive inside the park
Mfuwe Main Gate and the track network inside South Luangwa
You can drive yourself in South Luangwa – it is one of the few big African parks where that is still true – but park officials require a 4x4, you pay the higher self-driver entry rate plus a vehicle fee, and you are on your own with tracks whose signposting is thin. Buy a map at the gate. Stock up in Chipata, because Mfuwe village has basic groceries only and the Oasis fuel station does run dry; carry jerry cans. Walking out of your vehicle inside the park is not permitted.
- When
- Self-organised, inside gate hours
- Takes
- n/a
- Fare
- Entry at the self-driver rate of US$30 per person per day plus the vehicle fee; hire rates in Mfuwe not confirmed
SeasonDry season only in practice. The dirt tracks inside the park are impassable from about January to March. BookingNone for entry. Arrange a vehicle well ahead – there is no hire desk at Mfuwe airport. Run byself-drive; a few Mfuwe workshops and safari operators hire out open Land Cruisers.
Rules, permits and closures
South Luangwa park entry fee
Mfuwe Main Gate on the D791, just before the Mfuwe bridge over the Luangwa
Pay at the gate. The fee is per person per day and a day means 06:00 to 18:00, so a night drive that runs past dark is still inside one calendar day's permit. Vehicles and aircraft are charged separately. If you are on a camp's game drive the fee is usually already in your rate; if you are driving yourself you pay a higher rate and a vehicle fee on top. Pick up a park map at the gate, because the tracks inside are signposted haphazardly.
- When
- Gate hours 06:00 to 18:00
- Takes

- Fare 2025
- International visitors US$25 per person per day, self-drivers US$30, residents and SADC nationals US$20, Zambian citizens K55.60. Vehicle under 3 tons K34 local registration or US$15 foreign; aircraft K222.40 or US$50. Camping US$5, boating US$20. Under-fives free, five to 13 pay half
SeasonYear-round. BookingPay at the gate; the official list is published as a guideline and is stated to be subject to change without notice. Run byDepartment of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW).
Mwami / Mchinji, the Malawi border
Lilongwe to Mchinji (Malawi side) to Mwami (Zambian side), about 22 km east of Chipata on the Umodzi Highway
Take the Mchinji border road out of Lilongwe; it is a little over an hour. You complete Malawian exit formalities, walk across, and do Zambian entry at Mwami. On the Zambian side you pay carbon tax and buy third-party motor insurance, both now in kwacha, and there is a bureau de change at the post so you need not deal with the money changers. Self-drivers also need a police clearance from Interpol at the Lilongwe police headquarters proving the vehicle is not stolen – budget half an hour for it. Shared taxis run Chipata to the border for about K50 in half an hour; taxis from the Malawi side can take you through Malawian customs but you change vehicles once inside Zambia.
- When
- Daylight hours; shared taxis on the Chipata side run through the day
- Takes
- 1 hour Lilongwe to the border, plus formalities; 30 to 40 minutes border to Chipata
- Fare 2024
- Shared taxi Chipata to the border 50 K; Interpol vehicle clearance in Lilongwe MK5,000; carbon tax and third-party insurance charged separately at Mwami
SeasonYear-round. BookingNone. Most nationalities have not needed a Zambian tourist visa since 2022, and the visa-free list was widened again on 8 April 2026 – check the immigration site before you travel. Run byZambia Immigration and Zambia Revenue Authority at Mwami.
Green season, and what the rains close
The park tracks, the Great East Road and the Petauke shortcut
Three separate things shut down between December and April and they do not shut together. Inside the park, the dirt tracks become impassable and several camps close outright – Track and Trail closes January to March – while the bushcamp operators inside the park stay open year-round at reduced rates. Proflight keeps flying to Mfuwe all year but drops to about three days a week in January and February. And the Great East Road itself, the tarred road from Lusaka, is the one that catches people out: the Road Development Agency had to install an emergency ACROW bridge at Kankumba Stream in Rufunsa after it washed away on 25 December 2025, and eleven days later a culvert embankment collapsed at Mvuwa Stream, 38 km from Luangwa Bridge, leaving one lane. The Petauke to Mfuwe shortcut down the escarpment is dry-season only and should be attempted only with two or more 4x4s in convoy; it takes about six hours longer than going round by Chipata.
- When
- Green season roughly December to April, peaking January to March

SeasonDecember to April. BookingEmail your camp for road conditions before you set out – the camps that take self-drivers ask you to do exactly that. Run byRoad Development Agency for the roads; individual camps decide their own closures.
On foot, by bike, or otherwise
Walking safaris
From a camp or bushcamp into the bush, and between bushcamps on the southern circuit
The Luangwa invented the walking safari and it is still the reason most people come. You cannot do it alone: every walk goes out with a professional guide and an armed escort scout from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, whose presence is required, usually with a tea porter carrying water. Morning walks leave camp about 06:00 and are back by 10:00 with a tea break in the middle. Walking from one bushcamp to the next takes two to four hours and is how the southern circuit is meant to be travelled. DNPW sets a minimum age of 12.
- When
- Daily from most camps in the dry season, usually a 06:00 start
- Takes
- 4 hours for a morning walk; 2 to 4 hours camp to camp; multi-night bushcamp treks
- Fare
- Offered as an included activity at the full-board camps and as a paid extra at the budget camps; rates vary by camp and are not centrally published
SeasonDry season. Walking is not practical once the grass is high and the ground is wet, roughly December to April. BookingThrough your camp the day before. Wear khaki, green, brown or grey and closed shoes; blue and black draw tsetse flies. Run bythe camps, with DNPW scouts.
By water
Luangwa river pontoons
Kafunta's private pontoon south of the main gate, and the public pontoon at Nyamaluma about 50 km southwest
The Mfuwe bridge is the only fixed crossing and it is where you see your first hippos and crocodiles. South of it, camps run pontoons across the Luangwa to reach the quieter parts of the park without going round by the gate – Kafunta operates one in the peak season, a few minutes from the lodge. The other public access point is the pontoon at Nyamaluma, which takes vehicles across and has a barebones campsite beside it, but it is only realistic with your own 4x4. Boat travel on the river is impossible in the dry season when the water is too low, and canoeing on your own is a bad idea in either season because of hippos and crocodiles.
- When
- When a vehicle turns up, during daylight; the Kafunta pontoon runs in the peak season only
- Takes
- minutes
- Fare
- No published tariff for the camp pontoons; the Nyamaluma crossing fee was not confirmed
SeasonPeak dry season. High water and floods take the pontoons out in the rains. BookingArranged through the camp that owns the pontoon. Run byindividual camps; DNPW at Nyamaluma.
What we could not find out
9 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
The brief said the Chipata to Mfuwe road is not tarred the whole way. It is. Three camps on that road state independently that the 123 to 128 km from the Lundazi Road turn-off in Chipata to the ZESCO junction at Mfuwe is sealed end to end and takes 1h30m to 3h, and the tarring project dates back to a 2009 launch reported by Lusaka Times. Wikivoyage's Mfuwe article, which still says the road is not tarred, is the stale one.
- 02
The brief said buses run the Lusaka to Chipata road overnight. The service travellers are actually pointed at is a daytime one: the Jonda bus leaves Lusaka at 05:00 and arrives in Mfuwe about 17:00. Overnight coaches to Chipata exist but no current operator timetable or fare could be found for them – the bus companies named on Wikivoyage (Zambia-Malawi, Johabie, Juldans, CR Carriers) have no reachable website, and none appears on the Zambia Tourism bus page, which covers only the Lusaka to Livingstone and Lusaka to Mongu corridors.
- 03
The brief said you cannot self-drive in the park without a guide in most concessions. Self-drive is permitted in South Luangwa and priced for: DNPW publishes a separate self-driver entry rate of US$30 per person per day, and the camps say the only requirement is a 4x4. What is genuinely forbidden is walking: no one goes on foot without a professional guide and an armed DNPW scout.
- 04
The brief listed Proflight and charter operators at Mfuwe as though Chipata and Lilongwe were also on the scheduled network. Proflight's 21 September 2026 timetable has no Chipata station at all and no Lilongwe to Mfuwe leg – Wikivoyage's Chipata article, which says Proflight flies there Monday to Friday, is out of date. Malawi is reached by seat-in-charter instead.
- 05
No air ambulance or evacuation charter operator serving Mfuwe could be confirmed. Every camp checked requires guests to carry insurance that includes medical evacuation, and the Bushcamp Company says evacuation to higher-care facilities is often to Johannesburg, but none names the aircraft operator or a callout cost. Ask the camp, or ask Mfuwe International Airport, which airline holds the standby.
- 06
Jonda bus and Green Bus fares are not published anywhere reachable; the camps that recommend both services give phone numbers but no price. Ask at the Lusaka Intercity counter or the Chipata Downtown station.
- 07
Pontoon crossing fees on the Luangwa were not confirmed for either the camp-run pontoons or the public crossing at Nyamaluma.
- 08
Proflight runs its bookings on a Videcom VARS engine at customer3.videcom.com/proflightzambia, but no public availability or fare endpoint responded; the usable machine-readable source is the timetable PDF, which is republished at a dated wp-content path and was last issued 21 September 2026.
- 09
Of the Zambian publishers tried, lusakatimes.com and diggers.news serve a working WordPress search API; daily-mail.co.zm returns its API but ignores the search term and hands back the same recent posts for every query, and znbc.co.zm did not respond.
What the planner can route today
The options above live on the place page, not in the departure board: a boat that comes when you phone has no time to show. What the board can do for South Luangwa National Park is this.
