Longyearbyen
No road leaves Longyearbyen. The only public road runs from the airport through town to Mine 7 and stops; every other settlement on Svalbard – Barentsburg, Pyramiden, Ny-Ålesund – is reachable only by boat, snowmobile, dog sled or aircraft, and there is no scheduled service to any of them. Inside town you walk, take one of the two 24-hour taxi firms, or borrow a city bike in summer. The one piece of public transport is the airport shuttle, which is timed to each scheduled flight rather than to a clock. Everything beyond the town boundary is a guided trip, because the law effectively requires polar bear protection outside the settlements and, since January 2025 and January 2026, layers on landing restrictions, bear distances, registration duties and compulsory search-and-rescue insurance.

Longyearbyen is one of the world's northernmost settlements, with an estimated population of around 2,400–2,800, and is the capital and largest settled area of Svalbard. It stretches along the foot of the left bank of the Longyear Valley and on the shore of Adventfjorden, the short estuary leading into Isfjorden on the west coast of Spitsbergen, the island's broadest inlet. As of 2002, Longyearbyen Community Council is an official Norwegian municipality. It is the seat of the Governor of Svalbard. As of 2024, the town's mayor is Leif Terje Aunevik.

8 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed eight ways of moving to, from or around Longyearbyen: one by road, one by air, three hired or on demand, one by water and two under your own steam, from 25 sources. One needs a phone call or a message before you turn up.
The fares were seen in 2025 to 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. We rate 5 of the 8 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 22 September 2026, and ends with nine things we could not confirm.
By road
Flybussen – the airport shuttle
Svalbard Airport Longyear (LYR) to Longyearbyen town centre, stopping at every hotel and guesthouse
Inbound, the bus waits outside arrivals and leaves about 30–40 minutes after the aircraft lands, once the baggage belt is empty – there is no clock time, it simply goes when everyone has their bags. Outbound you wait at the stop nearest your accommodation at the time on the week's timetable, which is a one-page PDF republished weekly at svalbardbuss.no/en/flybuss and pinned up at hotel receptions. The operator is Svalbard Buss og Taxi, part of the LNS group, office +47 79 02 10 52. Pay on board in Norwegian kroner or by card – foreign cash is not accepted.
- When
- Every scheduled flight is met, in both directions. Outbound that works out at one to three departures a day: in late September 2026, Monday 11:00, 12:30 and 17:30, Tuesday 12:45, Wednesday 10:45 and 15:30, Thursday 10:15, Friday 10:15 and 11:45, Saturday 17:30 or 17:45, Sunday 11:45 and 13:15
- Takes
- About 15 minutes airport to town centre, longer with the full hotel loop
- Fare 2026
- One way: adult NOK 125, student NOK 80, child up to 14 NOK 55, from 1 August 2026. Two children travel free with a parent or guardian, which does not apply to school or sports groups
SeasonYear-round. BookingNone – turn up and pay the driver. Times change when flights are cancelled or retimed, so check with your hotel reception the day before. Run bySvalbard Buss og Taxi AS.
By air
Scheduled flights from Oslo and Tromsø – the only way in
Oslo Gardermoen and Tromsø to Svalbard Airport Longyear (LYR)
SAS and Norwegian both sell Longyearbyen as a Norwegian domestic route, so it appears in an ordinary domestic search. SAS flies from Tromsø most days year-round and adds around six direct Oslo services a week in the summer high season; Norwegian runs about three Oslo flights a week. Book direct at flysas.com or norwegian.com.
- When
- Roughly daily from Tromsø on SAS all year; up to six a week Oslo–Longyearbyen on SAS in high summer, about three a week on Norwegian
- Takes
- About 3 hours from Oslo, about 1 hour 30 minutes from Tromsø
- Fare 2026
- No fare confirmed from a source read for this entry
SeasonYear-round from Tromsø; the Oslo direct schedule thickens in summer. BookingOnline, as a Norwegian domestic flight. Svalbard is outside Schengen, so you clear Norwegian immigration on the mainland on the way out and customs at your first mainland stop on the way back – if you route Longyearbyen–Tromsø–Oslo, everything happens at Tromsø and you collect your bags there even if they are tagged through. Sightseeing by plane or helicopter within Svalbard is banned under the environmental law, so there are no scenic flights and no scheduled inter-settlement air service for visitors. Run bySAS, Norwegian Air Shuttle.
Hired, booked and on demand
Taxis in town
Anywhere on the one road: airport, town centre, Nybyen, up the valley to the dog yards and Mine 7
Two firms, both operating around the clock: Longyearbyen Taxi on +47 79 02 13 75 and Svalbard Buss og Taxi on +47 79 02 13 05. You ring rather than hail. They also meet flights when the shuttle is not running.
- When
- 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
- Takes
- A 5-minute hop across town; 10–15 minutes to the airport
- Fare 2025
- No current tariff published. Wikivoyage's figure of about NOK 120 for a 5-minute ride from the church to the town centre is the only number found and is undated
SeasonYear-round. BookingPhone ahead, particularly at flight times and on Saturday nights. Run byLongyearbyen Taxi; Svalbard Buss og Taxi.
Snowmobile – the actual transport for half the year
Out of Longyearbyen up Adventdalen and the side valleys, and across the frozen fjords: Elveneset and Tempelfjorden about 70 km east, Barentsburg, Pyramiden, the east coast
Residents own their own machines and park them in racks all over town; visitors go with an operator. Hurtigruten Svalbard (+47 79 02 61 00), Svalbard Wildlife Expeditions, Basecamp Explorer, Snowfox Travel and Svalbard Adventures all run safaris, and every one of them collects you from your accommodation. Svalbard Snøscooterutleie AS in Longyearbyen is the local snowmobile dealer and rental firm. Whoever you go with, the guide carries a rifle and a safety sled and the price includes rescue insurance.
- When
- Daily departures through the season, typically a morning and an afternoon slot – Hurtigruten Svalbard's Elveneset safari runs 09:00–14:00 and 15:00–20:00 every day
- Takes
- 5 hours for a short safari; multi-day expeditions of 2–5 days reach the east coast
- Fare 2025
- No individual tour price confirmed from a source read for this entry. Wikivoyage's general range is NOK 390–1,000 for a half day and NOK 1,000–3,000 for a full day, with a week-long snowmobile expedition around NOK 21,500
SeasonRoughly February to mid-May – the Elveneset safari's published 2026 season is 8 February to 16 May. Snow cover, not the calendar, decides. Motorised traffic on bare ground is illegal, and since 1 January 2025 motorised traffic is banned on selected fjords after 1 March. BookingBook online ahead, especially February to April. You must bring a valid driving licence to drive – a category B car licence is accepted, and guides check every licence before departure. Where visitors may drive at all is set out in the Motor Traffic Regulations, which give residents a much larger area than visitors, so in practice a visitor rides with a guide. Run byHurtigruten Svalbard, Svalbard Wildlife Expeditions, Basecamp Explorer Spitsbergen, Snowfox Travel, Svalbard Adventures; rental and sales from Svalbard Snøscooterutleie AS.
Dog sledding – transport, not a theme-park ride
From the kennels in Bolterdalen and Adventdalen, 10–15 km out of town, into the valleys and up to the Scott Turner glacier; multi-day runs to cabins and to the east coast
Green Dog Svalbard (+47 48 84 41 53) and Svalbard Husky have their yards in Bolterdalen, next to the snowmobile-free zone; Arctic Husky Travellers, Svalbard Villmarkssenter and Basecamp Explorer also run teams. Every operator picks you up from your accommodation and drives you out to the kennel. You harness the dogs and drive the sled yourself, in pairs, with the guide's team leading.
- When
- Four slots a day, seven days a week, at Green Dog in Bolterdalen: 08:00, 09:00, 14:00 and 15:00, each about four hours door to door
- Takes
- About 4 hours for the standard trip, of which roughly 1.5 hours is actually sledding; 2 to 10 days for expeditions
- Fare 2025
- No current price confirmed from a source read for this entry. Wikivoyage lists Green Dog trips from NOK 990
SeasonGreen Dog's sled season runs 1 January to 22 May. Outside that the same dogs pull wheeled carts, so dog sledding is genuinely available all year. BookingBook online in advance; groups are capped at about six guests. Run byGreen Dog Svalbard, Svalbard Husky, Arctic Husky Travellers, Svalbard Villmarkssenter, Basecamp Explorer.
By water
Summer boats on Isfjorden – Pyramiden, Barentsburg, Isfjord Radio, Ny-Ålesund
From Longyearbyen harbour across and along Isfjorden: Barentsburg and Pyramiden, both 2–3 hours away, the Nordenskiöld and Esmark glacier fronts, Isfjord Radio about 100 km out at the fjord mouth, the bird cliffs, and a long day to Ny-Ålesund at 79°N
The harbour is a 20-minute walk or a short taxi ride below the town centre. Henningsen Transport & Guiding (svalbardcruise.com, +47 40 04 91 71) runs the Billefjorden and Nordenskiöld glacier cruise and a glacier safari; Hurtigruten Svalbard and several smaller operators run walrus safaris and bird-cliff trips. The Isfjord-Express runs daily round trips to Isfjord Radio. There is no timetabled public ferry to anywhere – every sailing is a booked tour.
- When
- Daily in season on the main Isfjorden runs; the Isfjord Radio boat runs daily round trips June to mid-September. Ny-Ålesund is an occasional long day trip and is very weather-dependent
- Takes
- 2–3 hours each way to Barentsburg or Pyramiden; a full day for the Billefjorden cruise; a very long day for Ny-Ålesund
- Fare 2026
- No fare confirmed from a source read for this entry
SeasonOpen water only, roughly June to mid-September – Longyearbyen's port is usable only once the pack ice pulls back. In winter you reach the same settlements by snowmobile. BookingBook ahead online. Note a real change since 2022: Visit Svalbard and most Longyearbyen tourism companies stopped selling and marketing trips to Barentsburg and Pyramiden after the invasion of Ukraine, because both are run by the Russian state-owned Trust Arktikugol. They are still physically reachable, but you will not find them in the mainstream tour listings. Since 1 January 2025 landings in protected areas are allowed only at specific mapped sites, boats in national parks are capped at 200 passengers, and breaking fast ice is banned. Run byHenningsen Transport & Guiding, Hurtigruten Svalbard and other local operators.
On foot, by bike, or otherwise
City bikes
Inside the town limits of Longyearbyen only
Over the counter at the Svalbard Tourist Information office, Vei 221.1 at the top of the pedestrian street, +47 79 02 55 50, open 10:00–17:00 every day in summer. Twenty bikes, helmet included, funded by the Svalbard Environmental Protection Fund. Several hotels and tour operators also rent bikes in the summer season.
- When
- Walk in while bikes are available
- Takes
- You can cross the whole town in 15 minutes
- Fare 2026
- NOK 40 per bike per day
SeasonSummer only, once the snow is off the road. BookingNone – turn up. Visitors may keep a bike up to 3 days; residents 1 day a week. The city bikes must not be taken outside the town limits, and for any ride beyond them you are told to join an organised tour with a guide who can handle a polar bear encounter. Run bySvalbard Tourist Information Office (Visit Svalbard).
On foot in town – and the line you cannot walk past
The town centre, Nybyen, the harbour and the road up Adventdalen as far as the town boundary
Everything in Longyearbyen is within about 30 minutes' walk. Beyond the settlement the rules change completely. The Governor's guidelines say plainly not to leave the settlements without a suitable gun and experience in using it; rifles can be hired in town, but firearm applications to the Governor's office currently take up to eight weeks to process, so in practice a visitor hires a guide instead. In winter, watch for snowmobiles – their tracks do not follow the car roads.
- When
- Always
- Takes
- 10–30 minutes across town
- Fare 2026
- Free
SeasonYear-round. From late October to mid-February there is no daylight at all, and the walk between Nybyen and the centre runs under avalanche-prone slopes. BookingNone inside town. Outside it: the inhabited 'travel area' – the centre of Longyearbyen including the airport, plus Pyramiden, Barentsburg and Ny-Ålesund – needs no permission. Beyond it a visitor must apply to the Governor of Svalbard four weeks before the trip, and tour operators eight weeks before. From 1 January 2026 search-and-rescue insurance is compulsory outside the travel area, at NOK 120,000 per incident in zone A, NOK 350,000 in zone B and NOK 650,000 in zone C, and from 1 July 2027 tourist businesses operating outside the settlements must use approved Svalbard guides. Since 1 January 2025 you must stay at least 300 m from a polar bear, and 500 m between 1 March and 30 June. Run bynone.
What we could not find out
9 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
Correction to the brief: the airport shuttle fare is no longer NOK 100 one way. The operator's own page gives NOK 125 adult, NOK 80 student and NOK 55 child from 1 August 2026. Visit Svalbard's page still shows the older NOK 110 / 75 / 45 and its return-ticket column is blank, so the return fare could not be confirmed from either source.
- 02
Correction: the brief assumes boats to Pyramiden and Barentsburg are a normal visitor option. Since 2022 Visit Svalbard and most Longyearbyen operators have withdrawn all products connected to the Russian state-owned Trust Arktikugol, so neither settlement appears in the mainstream tour listings any more. Confirm current availability directly with a boat operator such as Henningsen Transport & Guiding before planning around it.
- 03
No individual tour prices were captured for snowmobile safaris, dog sledding or boat trips – the Visit Svalbard activity pages carry seasons and times but push the price into a third-party booking widget. Wikivoyage's ranges are used instead and are approximate and older.
- 04
Taxi tariffs are not published anywhere that was reachable. The NOK 120 figure is a Wikivoyage example, not a tariff.
- 05
The exact boundary of the Longyearbyen town limits – the line beyond which polar bear protection is expected and city bikes may not go – is not published as a map on any page read here. The Governor's Svalbard map tool holds the management-area and motor-traffic boundaries and is the authority.
- 06
Whether carrying a firearm outside the settlements is legally mandatory or strongly recommended is not stated crisply on the Governor's English weapon page. It reads as a requirement to be equipped to scare off polar bears rather than a duty to carry a rifle specifically; a hired guide satisfies it in practice.
- 07
sysselmesteren.no blocks plain HTTP clients, so all Governor content above came through a fetching proxy rather than a direct read, and the field-safety page did not itself restate the firearm rule.
- 08
Flight fares and the precise 2026 SAS and Norwegian weekly frequencies were not verified against the airlines – the schedule shape comes from Wikivoyage.
- 09
No source found for winter cancellation rates on the airport shuttle, or for what happens to the shuttle when a flight diverts.
