Lofoten

Most travellers reach Lofoten by the Bodø car ferry to Moskenes or by air to Leknes or Svolvær; once inside, the E10 and its bridges link the islands, but buses are thin and built around the school run, and the outer islands of Værøy and Røst still depend on a ferry the weather can cancel.

How transport works here

7 ways of moving, each with its rule

We confirmed seven ways of moving to, from or around Lofoten: four by water, one by air, one by road and one under your own steam, from 12 sources.

The fares were seen in 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. Five fares carry no year, because they could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 1 of the 7 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 28 September 2026, and ends with eleven things we could not confirm.

01
ferry

Bodø – Moskenes car ferry

Bodø to Moskenes, the main RV80/E10 crossing onto Moskenesøya

Torghatten Nord ferry terminal in Bodø harbour; ordinary (non-reserved) traffic queues in any lane not marked "reservert"

When
Several sailings a day year-round; exact daily count not found in this fetch
Takes
Around 3h15 by ferry (Wikivoyage, dated)
Fare 2026
Vehicle and passenger fares set by Statens Vegvesen under the AutoPASS ferry tariff (autopassferje.no) – not itemised in this fetch. A separate, optional place-guarantee charge is listed on the route page at 65 kr per adult, 35 kr child/military/honnør, 65 kr motorcycle and 130 kr to 400 kr per vehicle by length

SeasonRuns year-round; Torghatten's own route page warns of "svært høy belastning i høysesongene" (very high load in the high seasons). BookingNot compulsory. The route page says up to 60% of the vessel's capacity can be pre-booked, up to 10 hours before departure; its own reservation box gives the bookable share as 50% on Bodø–Moskenes and 30% to and from Værøy and Røst, and sets the booking deadline at 20:00 the day before. The place guarantee is charged on top of the ordinary fare and booked traffic must be in the "Reservert" lane 45 minutes before departure. Everyone else queues at the quay and buys on boarding. Run byTorghatten Nord, selling tickets on behalf of Statens Vegvesen (contracting authority).

02
ferry

Bodø – Værøy – Røst ferry (outer islands leg)

Same Bodø–Moskenes sailing pattern, most runs also call at Værøy and Røst on the way

Same Torghatten Nord terminal in Bodø; foot passengers without a car scan a QR code at the quay and wait in the passenger queue zone

When
One ferry a day to Værøy and Røst according to Wikivoyage (dated); Torghatten's current page does not give a daily count
Takes
Wikivoyage contradicts itself and no operator figure was found: one passage gives Værøy as around six hours from Bodø and about two hours from Moskenes, another as 3 hr 15 min from Moskenes and 3 hr 45 min from Bodø on a direct sailing. No source found gives a time for Røst
Fare 2026
No standalone fare table found. The operator's reservation box for this route states the crossing itself costs nothing for passengers, only for vehicles, so a foot passenger pays only the optional 65 kr place guarantee (2026); it also caps place-guarantee tickets for passengers without a vehicle at 20 per departure, two per booking

SeasonYear-round, but the operator states islanders are prioritised in a squeeze: "Reisende til øyene (Røst og Værøy) vil bli prioritert ved stor pågang". Booking30% of capacity to/from Værøy and Røst can be pre-booked for a place-guarantee fee; islanders are given priority over Bodø–Moskenes-only travellers when the ferry is full. Run byTorghatten Nord.

NEX 2 passenger express boat, Bodø – Steigen – Svolvær

Bodø to Svolvær via stops in Steigen, across Vestfjorden

Boreal express-boat quay in Bodø harbour; timetables published at reisnordland.no rather than on the boat operator's own site

When
Scheduled daily service, but frequently cancelled – an NRK headline from this session's search reported 25 cancelled departures in one August alone on "Nordlandsekspressen" (title only, publisher page could not be resolved to a live URL)
Takes
Not found in this fetch
Fare
Not found in this fetch. A separate Avisa Nordland headline (title only, publisher page not resolved) claimed the boat costs roughly 50% more than flying Bodø–Svolvær, but no fare figure can be confirmed; the fare and its year remain undated

SeasonRuns year-round; no separate winter timetable found in this fetch. Bookingnone confirmed. Run byBoreal Sjø (route also referred to locally as "Nordlandsekspressen").

04
ferry

Hurtigruten coastal express call at Svolvær

Bergen–Kirkenes coastal route, calling at Svolvær; Wikivoyage also lists Stamsund, but its text is old and whether Stamsund is still a call was not confirmed

Hurtigruten quay at Svolvær harbour; tickets can be bought for a single leg rather than the full coastal voyage, but this fetch could not confirm current point-to-point booking terms

When
Not confirmed in this fetch. Wikivoyage names Hurtigruten alongside an ordinary ferry on the Bodø–Svolvær run without separating their frequencies, and says only that the ferry to Svolvær runs every day except Sunday
Takes
Not found for this specific leg in this fetch
Fare
Not found in this fetch

SeasonYear-round; the Trollfjord side-excursion is suspended in spring for rockfall risk: "Navigation banned in spring because of falling rock". Bookingnone confirmed for local point-to-point fares. Run byHurtigruten (branded Kystruten/coastal express).

05
scheduled flight

Widerøe short-hop network from Bodø

Bodø to Leknes, Svolvær and Røst

Bodø Airport (BOO); Widerøe is the sole scheduled operator on these short regional routes

When
Not found in this fetch
Takes
20–30 minutes flight time from Bodø (Wikivoyage, dated)
Fare
Not found in this fetch

SeasonYear-round; Værøy's own airport closed after a 1990 crash and is no longer served – Wikivoyage: "The former airport at Værøy was closed following a plane crash in 1990". Bookingnone confirmed. Run byWiderøe.

By road

06
bus

Local buses along the E10 and Moskenesøya

Narvik/Evenes to Svolvær to Leknes to Moskenes/Å, plus short local runs (e.g. Henningsvær, Kabelvåg)

Main stops at Leknes (a compulsory change point) and the Moskenes ferry waiting room

When
Several buses a day on trunk stretches, thinning out badly off the E10 corridor; this fetch could not confirm that timetables are built around school hours, though local reporting (a Lofotposten headline, "Daglig skoleskyss for videregående elever mellom Leknes og Svolvær", title only, publisher page not resolved) suggests school runs shape at least one daily service
Takes
Narvik to Svolvær about 4h15; Moskenes/Å area to Leknes about 1 hour by road
Fare
kr 40 quoted for the Moskenes-to-Å short hop, and long-trip student discount of 50% (Wikivoyage, dated, no year given); undated beyond the Wikivoyage edit

SeasonYear-round. Bookingnone, pay on board. Run byNot confirmed in this fetch (regional bus concession under Nordland fylkeskommune / reisnordland.no).

One way

On foot, by bike, or otherwise

07
bicycle

Cycling the E10

The full E10 crossing of the archipelago, about 180 km, Å to the mainland connection

Bike hire at the youth hostel and at Lofoten Bed and Boat in Å; no dedicated cycle path, riders share the road

When
n/a – self-paced
Takes
Not found in this fetch
Fare
Bike hire in Å priced at 150 kr a day (Wikivoyage, dated, no year given); undated beyond the Wikivoyage edit

SeasonThe road is open year-round but the difficulty is structural, not seasonal: the E10 is narrow with fast traffic and tunnels with no separate cycle lane, and flying out with a bike is also constrained – "which means removing the front wheel of most bikes" at Bodø Airport check-in. Bookingnone, hire on arrival. Run byYouth Hostel Å / Lofoten Bed and Boat (hire only, not a transport operator).

Not confirmed

What we could not find out

11 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.

  1. 01

Could not confirm the current daily sailing count or timetable for the Bodø–Moskenes/Værøy/Røst ferry; ask at the Torghatten Nord terminal in Bodø or check torghatten.no/our-routes/bodo-vaeroy-rost-moskenes directly, which does carry a live departures widget this fetch could not render.

  2. 02

Could not confirm current fares for the Bodø–Svolvær express boat (NEX 2/Nordlandsekspressen); ask at reisnordland.no or the Boreal ticket desk in Bodø.

  3. 03

A Lofotposten headline, 'Daglig skoleskyss for videregående elever mellom Leknes og Svolvær' (Google News listing, undated in the RSS feed, publisher URL could not be resolved this session), suggests at least one daily bus service is run as school transport for upper-secondary students between Leknes and Svolvær; could not confirm whether wider local bus timetables in Lofoten are built around school hours as the brief suggested. Ask at a Leknes or Svolvær bus stop, or check reisnordland.no's own timetables.

  4. 04

A separate NRK headline, 'Hurtigbåt-kollaps i Nordland: 25 innstilte ruter bare i august på Nordlandsekspressen' (Google News listing, undated in the RSS feed, publisher URL could not be resolved this session), points to a serious reliability problem on the Bodø–Svolvær express boat in a recent August; could not confirm the year or get the NRK article itself to verify further detail.

  5. 05

Found Lofotposten headlines referencing a summer passenger boat on Reinefjorden serving Vindstad and Bunes (e.g. 'Sommerruta på Reinefjorden er i gang', 'Klar for ti elektriske år på Reinefjorden', both Google News listings, publisher pages not resolved this session) – this looks like a genuine hiking-access boat but could not be confirmed with an operator, fare or current timetable; ask at the Reine tourist office or harbour.

  6. 06

Could not confirm current Widerøe fares or flight frequency for Bodø–Leknes, Bodø–Svolvær, Bodø–Værøy or Bodø–Røst; the operator's own site is client-rendered and did not yield route data in this fetch. Check wideroe.no or ask at Bodø Airport.

  7. 07

Could not confirm Hurtigruten's current point-to-point booking terms or fare for a single Svolvær leg (as opposed to the full coastal cruise); ask at the Hurtigruten quay in Svolvær or via hurtigruten.com.

  8. 08

The Bodø–Melbu/Fiskebøl ferry mentioned in older Wikivoyage text as the link to Vesterålen appears to have been superseded by the E10 bridges the brief itself flags; Torghatten's current route list still shows 'Melbu – Fiskebøl' as an active ferje, so this fetch cannot say whether it has been replaced by road – flag for the next pass rather than trusting either source alone.

  9. 09

A service_status option asserting that winter wind and swell cancel individual Bodø–Moskenes/Værøy/Røst and Bodø–Svolvær sailings was removed in verification: nothing fetched supports it. Torghatten's route page speaks only of high-season capacity, not weather, and the Lofotposten weather-traffic bulletins behind the claim never resolved to a publisher URL. Check Torghatten's and Boreal's own deviation pages (trafikkmeldinger) before a winter crossing rather than treating cancellation as documented here.

  10. 10

Wikivoyage's Lofoten article carries several individually dated notes from 2015 (bus fares, ferry duration, Værøy helicopter service); none of these should be treated as current without a fresher check.

  11. 11

Wikivoyage gives two irreconcilable sets of times for the outer islands – Værøy as six hours from Bodø and two hours from Moskenes in one place, 3 hr 15 min from Moskenes and 3 hr 45 min from Bodø in another – and none for Røst. Torghatten publishes no duration on its route page. An earlier draft here split the difference at 1.5 hours from Moskenes; that figure came from no source and has been removed. Ask at the Bodø terminal.

What the planner can route today

The options above live on the place page, not in the departure board: a boat that comes when you phone has no time to show. What the board can do for Lofoten is this.
