Ziro
Ziro has no railway and only a thin air link, so almost everyone arrives in a shared Tata Sumo from Naharlagun, Itanagar or North Lakhimpur, booked the day before at a counter beside the bus stand and leaving early in the morning. The overnight Donyi Polo Express into Naharlagun is the feeder most travellers use to catch that first Sumo. Everyone who is not from Arunachal needs an Inner Line Permit before they get on anything. Inside the valley there is very little public transport: the Apatani villages are covered on foot, by bicycle or by hiring a vehicle for the day, and during the Ziro Festival week in late September every seat and every vehicle is spoken for.

7 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed seven ways of moving to, from or around Ziro: three by road, one by rail and cable, two hired or on demand and one under your own steam, from 24 sources. Three of them run only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. One needs a phone call or a message before you turn up.
The fares were seen in 2025 to 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. We rate none high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 21 September 2026, and ends with seven things we could not confirm.
By road
Shared Sumo, Naharlagun and Itanagar to Ziro
Naharlagun or Itanagar to Hapoli (Ziro town), about 100–115 km on NH-13 via Yazali and Joram
Sumo counters sit in a row just outside the bus stand at Naharlagun, a short auto ride from Naharlagun railway station; Itanagar has the same arrangement near the main taxi stand. Each counter is a small office with a board naming the destinations. Book a seat the evening before, or as soon as you get off the night train, and say whether you want a front seat – it costs more and is worth it on this road.
- When
- Several vehicles a day, concentrated in the early morning; the useful ones leave roughly 05:00–08:00 and they go when full
- Takes
- 3–4 hours in good conditions; 5 hours or more after heavy rain
- Fare 2025
- Roughly ₹400–700 per seat depending on the vehicle and the seat, with front seats priced higher. A 2017 traveller account put the front seat at ₹350, so treat the older figures as a floor
SeasonYear-round. Landslides and slow going in the June–September monsoon; the road is at its best October–April. BookingAt the counter, in cash, ideally a day ahead. You must already hold an Inner Line Permit – apply on the state eILP portal before you travel, as it is checked at the Arunachal border post on this road. Run byprivate owner-drivers working through booking counters; Tata Sumo and similar 9–10 seaters.
Shared Sumo, North Lakhimpur to Ziro
North Lakhimpur (Assam) to Hapoli, about 100–112 km via Kimin and the Arunachal border check post
Vehicles gather around the North Lakhimpur railway station and the ASTC bus stand area; ask at the taxi counters for Ziro or Hapoli. This is the shortest approach and the usual one if you have flown into Lilabari airport, which is about 100 km from Ziro
- When
- Morning departures, when full; fewer vehicles than on the Naharlagun route
- Takes
- 2h 30m to 4 hours depending on the road and the check post queue
- Fare 2026
- ₹300–500 per seat; a whole private taxi on the same road is quoted at ₹2,500–3,000
SeasonYear-round; slowest and least reliable in the July–August monsoon. BookingPay at the counter or to the driver. Inner Line Permit checked at the border post – carry a printed copy. Run byprivate owner-drivers, Tata Sumo and similar.
APSTS bus, Itanagar and Naharlagun to Ziro
Itanagar or Naharlagun bus stand to Ziro, with longer overnight services running through from Guwahati
Arunachal Pradesh State Transport Services runs from the state bus stands at Itanagar and Naharlagun. Buy at the APSTS counter. The APSTS online timetable exists but returns nothing for most route pairs, so the counter or the phone is the reliable way to check departures
- When
- Listed as roughly twice a day on the Itanagar–Ziro leg; Guwahati–Ziro services run mostly overnight
- Takes
- 4–6 hours from Itanagar. Guwahati to Ziro is a 10–13 hour haul
- Fare 2025
- Around ₹150–300 Itanagar to Ziro; ₹800–1,500 from Guwahati depending on operator and bus class
SeasonYear-round, subject to landslide closures in the monsoon. BookingAPSTS counter, the APSTS site, or redBus. Buses are slower and less frequent than the Sumos and most travellers end up in a Sumo instead. Run byAPSTS (Arunachal Pradesh State Transport Services), plus private operators on the Guwahati run.
By rail and cable
Donyi Polo Express to Naharlagun, the rail feeder
Guwahati to Naharlagun by train 15817 Donyi Polo Express, then road to Ziro
Naharlagun is the nearest railhead to Ziro, about 100 km away, and is the station the Ziro Sumos are timed around. The train reaches Naharlagun early in the morning, which is exactly when the Sumo counters outside the bus stand are filling their first vehicles – take an auto from the station to the counters and you can be in Ziro by lunchtime
- When
- Daily. 15817 passes Guwahati late at night and arrives Naharlagun the following morning
- Takes
- About 8–9 hours Guwahati to Naharlagun overnight; the full Shokhuvi–Naharlagun run is 13h 15m
- Fare 2026
- Roughly ₹200–800 depending on class (2S, SL, 3A, 2A, 1A)
SeasonYear-round. BookingIRCTC, up to the usual advance window. Sleeper fills up in the Ziro Festival week. Run byIndian Railways, Northeast Frontier Railway.
Hired, booked and on demand
Private taxi to Ziro and day hire in the valley
Naharlagun, Itanagar, Lilabari or North Lakhimpur to Ziro; also full-day hire around the valley for Hong, Hija, Hari, Kardo, the fish farms and Talley Valley
The same counters that sell Sumo seats will sell you the whole vehicle. In Ziro, ask your homestay or the drivers parked at the Hapoli market and taxi stand. There is no Ola or Uber and no prepaid counter, so agree the price and the list of stops before you set off
- When
- On demand
- Takes
- 3–4 hours Naharlagun to Ziro; a valley sightseeing day is 6–8 hours
- Fare 2026
- Reported ranges: ₹2,100–2,500 Naharlagun to Ziro, ₹2,500–3,000 from North Lakhimpur, ₹3,000–4,000 from Itanagar, ₹8,000–12,000 from Guwahati. Day rates inside the valley were not published by any source found
SeasonYear-round. BookingDirectly with the driver, through a homestay, or through one of the Northeast cab agencies by phone or email. Run bylocal owner-drivers and small Arunachal cab firms.
Ziro Festival of Music week transfers and shuttles
Naharlagun railway station or Guwahati to Ziro, and Hapoli or the campsites to the festival ground
For the four festival days in late September the normal transport is overwhelmed. Camp operators and package organisers run their own Tata Sumo transfers from Naharlagun station on a shared basis, and the camps near the ground run shuttles to the stages. Book the transfer with the camp or package when you book the ticket, not on arrival
- When
- Festival week only, timed to the train arrivals and the nightly programme
- Takes
- 3–4 hours Naharlagun to Ziro; 15–20 minutes Hapoli to the festival ground
- Fare 2025
- Bundled into camping and package prices; festival passes were quoted at ₹3,000–4,000 in 2025
SeasonLate September. The 2025 edition ran 25–28 September. BookingWith the camp or tour operator, months ahead. Accommodation and seats both sell out. Run byfestival camp operators and Northeast tour companies.
On foot, by bike, or otherwise
Getting around the valley on foot and by bicycle
Hapoli to Old Ziro and the Apatani villages – Hong, Hija, Hari, Bamin Michi, Dutta – spread over a flat valley floor a few kilometres apart
There is no scheduled local bus network. Shared taxis exist but are sparse and aimed at people going out of the valley, not between villages. Ask a homestay about a bicycle; the valley floor is flat and the villages are close enough to walk between. Cycle rickshaws can be hired for short hops around Hapoli
- When
- n/a – self-powered; shared taxis inside the valley are occasional
- Takes
- Hapoli to Old Ziro is a few kilometres; Hong and Hija are within an hour's ride
- Fare 2026
- Bicycle hire rates were not published by any source found. Local guides for village walks are quoted at ₹500–800 a day
SeasonBest March–May and September–November. Cycling is unpleasant in the monsoon and cold but clear December–February. BookingArrange through your homestay or the Ziro tourism office. Run byhomestays and independent guides.
What we could not find out
7 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
Inner Line Permit fee: the official eILP portal describes the permit but did not show a fee on the page fetched. 2025 guidance quoted ₹300 for up to three days and ₹500 for up to fourteen, while one 2026 travel guide says ₹100 for fifteen days. Check the current figure on eilp.arunachal.gov.in before quoting it. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit, not an eILP, applied for through indianfrro.gov.in or a tour operator.
- 02
No source gives actual departure times for the Naharlagun and Itanagar Sumo counters. The APSTS online timetable at apsts.arunachal.gov.in returns no results, so APSTS departure times and fares for Ziro are unconfirmed. Ask at the counters or the APSTS helpdesk.
- 03
Tata Winger shared vans to Ziro could not be confirmed from any source; only Tata Sumo shared services are documented. Treat Winger services as unverified.
- 04
Bicycle and scooter hire rates in Ziro valley are not published anywhere found. Ask a Hapoli homestay.
- 05
Hitching customs around Ziro could not be confirmed from any source and are not described here.
- 06
Ziro Airport (ZER) is described on Wikivoyage as having Alliance Air flights three times a week from Guwahati, but the current operating status of that service was not verified.
- 07
Day-hire rates for a taxi inside the valley, and rates to Talley Valley, are not published; agencies ask you to email or phone for a quote.
What the planner can route today
The options above live on the place page, not in the departure board: a boat that comes when you phone has no time to show. What the board can do for Ziro is this.
