Ziro
Ziro is a town in and the district headquarters of the Lower Subansiri district of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.
The part of the town which is the centre of economic activities and where the administrative offices are located is called Hapoli, or locally known by the Apatanis as "Hao-Polyang". Ziro is home to the Apatani tribe. Ziro is included in the Tentative List for UNESCO's World Heritage Site for the Apatani cultural landscape.
Getting to Ziro
Ziro is 115 km from Itanagar, 123 km from Lilabari, and 96 km from Naharlagun railway station. Foreign and Indian tourists (except those from Arunachal) need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh. It can be obtained online at Arunachal ILP portal.
- 01Ziro Airport
Alliance Air operates flights three times a week from Guwahati Airport (GAU).
Worth seeing
Paddy fields: Intricate irrigation systems and fish-rice farming make the rice fields of Ziro a model of sustainable agriculture. They are best seen during the cultivation and harvest seasons (June–October). Meghna Cave Temple: a 5000-year-old cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, perched atop a hill with panoramic views.
Things to do
Ziro Festival of Music. Late Sep-early Oct. An annual outdoor music festival held over four days every September. The festival features about 40 independent music acts from around the world, and has infrastructure built almost completely of locally sourced bamboo and a heavy emphasis on eco-friendly practices.
Where to eat
Ziro’s cuisine is rooted in Apatani traditions: Pike Pila – fermented bamboo and pork fat Rice beer or Apong – locally brewed, mildly alcoholic Smoked pork, bamboo shoot curry, and sticky rice are staples Try local eateries or eat at homestays for authentic meals 1 7th Heaven Ziro, Pai Road. Daily 9AM-7PM. Bakery and hot dishes.
Getting around Ziro the local way
Ziro has no railway and only a thin air link, so almost everyone arrives in a shared Tata Sumo from Naharlagun, Itanagar or North Lakhimpur, booked the day before at a counter beside the bus stand and leaving early in the morning. The overnight Donyi Polo Express into Naharlagun is the feeder most travellers use to catch that first Sumo. Everyone who is not from Arunachal needs an Inner Line Permit before they get on anything. Inside the valley there is very little public transport: the Apatani villages are covered on foot, by bicycle or by hiring a vehicle for the day, and during the Ziro Festival week in late September every seat and every vehicle is spoken for.
- 01Shared Sumo, Naharlagun and Itanagar to Ziroshare taxi
Naharlagun or Itanagar to Hapoli (Ziro town), about 100–115 km on NH-13 via Yazali and Joram
- Where
- Sumo counters sit in a row just outside the bus stand at Naharlagun, a short auto ride from Naharlagun railway station; Itanagar has the same arrangement near the main taxi stand. Each counter is a small office with a board naming the destinations. Book a seat the evening before, or as soon as you get off the night train, and say whether you want a front seat – it costs more and is worth it on this road.
- When
- Several vehicles a day, concentrated in the early morning; the useful ones leave roughly 05:00–08:00 and they go when full
- Fare (2025)
- Roughly ₹400–700 per seat depending on the vehicle and the seat, with front seats priced higher. A 2017 traveller account put the front seat at ₹350, so treat the older figures as a floor
- Takes
- 3–4 hours in good conditions; 5 hours or more after heavy rain
- Season
- Year-round. Landslides and slow going in the June–September monsoon; the road is at its best October–April
- Booking
- At the counter, in cash, ideally a day ahead. You must already hold an Inner Line Permit – apply on the state eILP portal before you travel, as it is checked at the Arunachal border post on this road

Not yet confirmed: Inner Line Permit fee: the official eILP portal describes the permit but did not show a fee on the page fetched. 2025 guidance quoted ₹300 for up to three days and ₹500 for up to fourteen, while one 2026 travel guide says ₹100 for fifteen days. Check the current figure on eilp.arunachal.gov.in before quoting it. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit, not an eILP, applied for through indianfrro.gov.in or a tour operator.; No source gives actual departure times for the Naharlagun and Itanagar Sumo counters. The APSTS online timetable at apsts.arunachal.gov.in returns no results, so APSTS departure times and fares for Ziro are unconfirmed. Ask at the counters or the APSTS helpdesk.; Tata Winger shared vans to Ziro could not be confirmed from any source; only Tata Sumo shared services are documented. Treat Winger services as unverified.; Bicycle and scooter hire rates in Ziro valley are not published anywhere found. Ask a Hapoli homestay.; Hitching customs around Ziro could not be confirmed from any source and are not described here.; Ziro Airport (ZER) is described on Wikivoyage as having Alliance Air flights three times a week from Guwahati, but the current operating status of that service was not verified.; Day-hire rates for a taxi inside the valley, and rates to Talley Valley, are not published; agencies ask you to email or phone for a quote..
