Tawang
Tawang is a 14 to 16 hour drive from Guwahati over Sela, and the service that carries most people is the shared Tata Sumo that leaves Tezpur before dawn – with one long-distance bus, an on-and-off state helicopter, and an Inner Line Permit you have to hold before you cross into Arunachal at Bhalukpong.

7 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed seven ways of moving to, from or around Tawang: four by road, one by air and two hired or on demand, from 24 sources. One of them runs only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. Two need a phone call or a message before you turn up.
The fares were seen in 2022 to 2025; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. We rate 1 of the 7 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 21 September 2026, and ends with seven things we could not confirm.
By road
Shared Tata Sumo from Tezpur
Tezpur – Bhalukpong – Bomdila – Dirang – Sela tunnel – Jang – Tawang, about 330 km
Sumos leave from the ASTC bus station area in Tezpur, not from a ticket website. Go to the stand the day before and put your name down – they fill up. Departures are before first light. Expect up to 15 people in one vehicle and your bag roped to the roof. Show your permit at the Bhalukpong police check post on the state border.
- When
- Daily, leaving between about 04:00 and 06:00; most go at 05:30 to 06:00
- Takes
- 14 to 16 hours
- Fare 2023
- ₹1,300 per seat from Tezpur as of April 2023; an earlier account puts the Tezpur run at ₹1,000–1,100Seen in 2023: a floor, not a price.
SeasonYear-round since the Sela tunnel opened, but July and August bring heavy rain and landslides and the district advises against travelling then. BookingIn person at the stand, a day ahead. No online booking. Run byPrivate Sumo owner-drivers working out of the Tezpur stand.
Shared Sumo from Guwahati
Guwahati – Tezpur – Bhalukpong – Bomdila – Dirang – Tawang, about 480 km
Sumos for Bomdila, Dirang and Tawang go from around Paltan Bazar in Guwahati. Call or book at the counter a day before because they leave at 05:00 to 06:00 and sell out. If you land at Guwahati airport you can pick up a shared taxi to Tezpur from the airport car park, or a city bus to Paltan Bazar for about ₹90. Book a bed at the far end – a Sumo arrives in Tawang late at night.
- When
- Daily, leaving 05:00 to 06:00
- Takes
- 15 to 16 hours to Bomdila; longer through to Tawang
- Fare 2023
- ₹1,700 per seat Guwahati to Tawang as of April 2023; about ₹750 per seat as far as BomdilaSeen in 2023: a floor, not a price.
SeasonYear-round; avoid the July–August monsoon. BookingAt the counter a day in advance. Run byPrivate Sumo owner-drivers.
Sumo from Bomdila, Dirang or Bhalukpong, the sensible last leg
Bhalukpong or Bomdila or Dirang to Tawang over the Sela tunnel
Breaking the trip is the normal way to do it, and the district administration recommends a night at Bomdila or Dirang to acclimatise before Sela. Sumos for Tawang are easy to pick up in all three towns, again before dawn. Your hotel will book a seat and often get the driver to collect you from the door. Bhalukpong, right at the Arunachal entry gate, is where people arriving from Assam by bus switch into a Sumo.
- When
- Daily, early morning
- Takes
- About 8 hours from Bomdila; roughly 3 hours less from Dirang
- Fare 2023
- ₹700 per seat from Dirang as of April 2023. Bomdila to Tawang around ₹500 per seat, or about ₹300 on the 05:30 bus; Bomdila to Dirang around ₹150.Seen in 2023: a floor, not a price.
SeasonYear-round. The Sela tunnel, open since March 2024, keeps this stretch passable in winter snow. BookingThrough your hotel or at the stand the previous evening. Run byPrivate Sumo owner-drivers; a local bus also runs from Bomdila.
APSTS state bus to Guwahati and Itanagar
Tawang – Dirang – Bomdila – Bhalukpong – Tezpur – Mangaldai – Guwahati; separately Tawang – Itanagar
Arunachal Pradesh State Transport Services runs a depot in Tawang with its own booking counter, and has a counter at Guwahati ISBT. Seats can be booked on the state's StarBus portal at apsts.arunachal.gov.in as well as at any APSTS counter. The portal's live board currently shows an Itanagar – Tawang Xylo service timed at 05:00. Slower than a Sumo but you get a seat to yourself.
- When
- About one service a day on the Guwahati corridor
- Takes
- About 17 hours Tawang to Guwahati
- Fare 2023
- ₹1,500 for the Guwahati run as recorded on Wikivoyage; an AC Bharat Benz service flagged off in January 2023 was fixed at ₹1,200 per passengerSeen in 2023: a floor, not a price.
SeasonYear-round, subject to landslides and snow. BookingOnline at apsts.arunachal.gov.in, at the Tawang depot counter, or Guwahati ISBT. Run byAPSTS (Arunachal Pradesh State Transport Services).
By air
State helicopter, Guwahati to Tawang
Guwahati LGBI Airport to Tawang helipad, with a Naharlagun (Itanagar) leg on the same rotation
This is run by the Arunachal Pradesh Civil Aviation Department, not an airline, and there is no online booking. You give your name to the counter and they confirm the day before. Sales counter at Guwahati airport, phone +91 9085738939; Tawang counter +91 9402221775. Booking counters take names 07:00 to 16:00 and confirm between 16:00 and 17:00. Nine or ten seats, so it goes quickly, and flights are pulled for weather, VIP movement or a medical evacuation.
- When
- Designated days only. The published Naharlagun – Guwahati – Tawang rotation leaves Guwahati 10:30 and returns from Tawang 12:00.
- Takes
- 55 to 70 minutes each way
- Fare 2025
- ₹3,500 Guwahati to Tawang on the state's published passenger fare list, ₹4,000 through from Naharlagun. A traveller paid ₹4,000 one way in January 2025.
SeasonYear-round on paper, weather permitting. Assume it will not fly rather than the other way round. BookingBy phone or at the counter. No payment in advance – the department's own page says so. Run byArunachal Pradesh Civil Aviation Department, flying a contracted MI-172.
Hired, booked and on demand
Car and driver from Guwahati or Tezpur
Guwahati or Tezpur to Tawang and back, usually over four to seven days with stops
The common arrangement for the whole trip: a local driver picks you up at Guwahati airport and stays with you to Tawang and back, stopping at Nameri, Bhalukpong, Dirang, Sela and Jang. Booked through Guwahati or Tezpur operators rather than on the spot. Drivers who work the route also handle the Inner Line Permit if you ask. Self-drive rentals are hard to find in Guwahati.
- When
- On demand
- Takes
- 14 to 16 hours of driving each way if done straight through; most people take two days
- Fare 2022
- ₹4,000–6,000 a day for the vehicle including fuel, parking and driver, higher in winterSeen in 2022: a floor, not a price.
SeasonYear-round. Avoid July and August. BookingIn advance by phone or through an operator. Run byGuwahati and Tezpur tour operators and independent drivers.
Getting out to Bum La, PT Tso and Madhuri Lake
Tawang town to Bum La pass on the China border, PT Tso and Shungetsar (Madhuri) lake
Two different jobs. For the monastery, war memorial and town sights a small Maruti Omni taxi for half a day is enough, and much of it is walkable. For the high lakes and Bum La you need a Sumo or Bolero because the road is rough. Book at the taxi stand in the old market or through your hotel, and do it at least a day before – the driver has to get your Bum La permit made, and Tawang district now insists those are issued only through authorised channels. Bum La is open to Indians only, not to foreign nationals.
- When
- Daily in season, weather permitting; a single day covers all three
- Takes
- A full day for the lakes and Bum La; half a day for town sights
- Fare 2022
- About ₹5,000 for a private vehicle for the 5 to 6 hour circuit, or about ₹1,500 a seat shared with four or five othersSeen in 2022: a floor, not a price.
SeasonBum La and the lakes can be shut by snow in winter. Acclimatise for 24 hours first. BookingA day in advance, because of the permit. Run byLocal Tawang drivers and tour operators; hotels arrange it.
What we could not find out
7 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
Permits gate everything. Indians need an Inner Line Permit, applied for online at eilp.arunachal.gov.in at ₹100 per person, or in person at Arunachal facilitation centres in New Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati and Tezpur. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit instead, obtained through the Ministry of Home Affairs or in person at the Arunachal Bhawan in Guwahati. Permits are checked at the Bhalukpong border post. Sources: https://eilp.arunachal.gov.in/ilpInfo and https://tawang.nic.in/how-to-reach/
- 02
The Sela tunnel, opened 9 March 2024 on NH-13 about 400 m below Sela Pass, is the single biggest change to this route. It keeps Bomdila – Tawang open in all weather, shortens Dirang – Tawang by 10 km and cuts about an hour. Published Sumo and bus durations mostly predate it, so real journey times may now be shorter than the 15 to 16 hours quoted. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sela_Tunnel
- 03
The most precise Sumo fares found are from April 2023 (Wikivoyage) and 2022 (thestupidbear.com). No 2025 or 2026 fare could be confirmed for any Sumo leg. Treat the figures as a floor and ask at the stand.
- 04
No current APSTS timetable for the Tawang – Guwahati service could be read. The state timetable page needs a session-bound form post that failed, and the route search returned nothing. Call the Tawang depot counter or check apsts.arunachal.gov.in directly for the day you travel.
- 05
The helicopter schedule published by the Civil Aviation Department is dated 15.10.2018 and the base for the Naharlagun – Guwahati – Tawang service was moved to Guwahati in 2023, so the days and times on the page may no longer hold. Intra-state chopper services have also been suspended for stretches in the past. Confirm on +91 9085738939 before planning around it.
- 06
Hitching was not documented for this route by any source found. Military and construction traffic is heavy on NH-13 but the road runs through a sensitive border district with permit checks, so do not assume a lift is normal here the way it is in Kinnaur.
- 07
Shared Sumo fares out of Tawang itself, as opposed to into it, were not separately confirmed, nor were the exact Tawang departure points. Ask at the old market taxi stand the evening before.
What the planner can route today
The options above live on the place page, not in the departure board: a boat that comes when you phone has no time to show. What the board can do for Tawang is this.
