Tirthan Valley
Nothing goes to Tirthan Valley directly. Everyone books a Delhi or Chandigarh bus bound for Kullu or Manali and gets off at Aut, where the valley road turns off just before the Aut tunnel. From the Aut bus stand, local HRTC buses run up the valley to Banjar roughly hourly, and Banjar is the real hub: village buses leave from its stand for Gushaini, Batahad, Pekhri and Sharchi in the Tirthan arm, and for Jibhi, Shoja and over Jalori Pass in the other. Share taxis wait at Aut in the morning for people who miss the bus, and most homestays will send a car. The Jalori Pass road to Shimla shuts under snow in winter, so that half of the circuit disappears from about December to March.

8 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed eight ways of moving to, from or around Tirthan Valley: five by road, two hired or on demand and one under your own steam, from 29 sources. Two of them run only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. One needs a phone call or a message before you turn up.
The fares were seen in 2020 to 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. We rate 3 of the 8 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 21 September 2026, and ends with six things we could not confirm.
By road
Overnight bus Delhi or Chandigarh to Aut
ISBT Kashmere Gate, Delhi, or ISBT-43 Chandigarh, to Aut on NH305, on a Kullu or Manali service
There is no Delhi to Banjar or Delhi to Jibhi bus. Book a Manali or Kullu service and tell the conductor you are getting off at Aut, about 70 km before Manali. Overnight buses reach Aut around 06:00. The bus normally stops at the tunnel mouth rather than in town, so you walk about ten minutes down to the Aut bus stand to pick up the valley bus. From Chandigarh, any Manali-bound bus through the day will do.
- When
- Several departures from Delhi between about 17:30 and 22:30; frequent all-day services from Chandigarh
- Takes
- 10–12 hours from Delhi, 7–8 hours from Chandigarh
- Fare 2026
- Delhi: about ₹600–950 on an HRTC ordinary or semi-deluxe, ₹900–1,500 on a Volvo or AC sleeper. Chandigarh: about ₹400–650 depending on bus type
SeasonYear-round; the Aut route stays open in winter. BookingHRTC online at hrtchp.com or at the ISBT counter; private Volvos through the usual aggregators. Book two to three days ahead on weekends and in May, June and October. Run byHRTC, HPTDC, and private Volvo operators.
Aut – Banjar local bus
Aut bus stand to Banjar, about 24 km along the Tirthan road via Larji and Sai Ropa
Walk down from the tunnel to the Aut bus stand and ask for Banjar; destinations are painted on the front of the bus in Hindi. HRTC also has a booking office at Aut (mobile 81630-4547) and a bus stand office at Banjar (01903-221243). Do not board at the tunnel itself if you can help it, the buses are packed by then.
- When
- Roughly hourly through the day; nothing reliable after dark
- Takes
- About 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes
- Fare 2026
- ₹30–50 per seat; quoted at ₹35 in 2020 and ₹45–50 in 2021
SeasonYear-round. BookingNone, pay on board. Run byHRTC.
Banjar village buses to Gushaini, Batahad, Pekhri and Sharchi
Banjar bus stand up the Tirthan arm through Sai Ropa and Nagini to Gushaini, with some services continuing to Batahad and Pekhri, and a separate run to Sharchi
Banjar has a large bus stand and it is the only place where all the village services meet. Ask at the stand for Gushaini; the Batahad and Pekhri buses go through Gushaini too. The Sharchi bus does not cross the Tirthan bridge at Gushaini, it carries straight on. A few buses run Aut to Gushaini direct but they are rare.
- When
- Banjar to Gushaini roughly every hour through the day. Pekhri and Sharchi services are less frequent; the Sharchi bus runs in the afternoon and the last Gushaini bus is around 17:00
- Takes
- Banjar to Gushaini about 20–30 minutes; Gushaini to Batahad or Pekhri another 30 minutes
- Fare 2026
- Banjar to Gushaini ₹20–30; Gushaini on to Batahad or Pekhri about ₹15
SeasonYear-round, but do not count on anything after dark. BookingNone, pay on board. Run byHRTC.
Share taxi from Aut
Aut to Banjar, Jibhi or Gushaini
Share taxis wait near the Aut bus stop in the morning, timed for the overnight buses coming in from Delhi. They fill with four to six passengers and leave, most running as far as Banjar or Jibhi. This is the usual fallback when the bus timings do not line up with a 06:00 arrival.
- When
- Mornings, when the overnight buses arrive; they leave when full
- Takes
- 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours to Jibhi, about 1 hour 15 minutes to Gushaini
- Fare 2026
- About ₹500 per seat to Jibhi
SeasonYear-round. BookingNone, turn up and ask. Run byAut Taxi Union and Seraj Valley Taxi Operators' Union drivers.
Banjar – Jibhi – Shoja – Jalori Pass – Ani – Shimla bus
Banjar over Jalori Pass (3,120 m) on NH305 to Khanag, Ani, Narkanda and Shimla
From Banjar bus stand, any bus signed Ghiyagi, Shoja, Jalori, Ani or Shimla goes this way; get off at Jibhi if that is where you are staying. The through Shimla service is one bus a day in each direction, so people usually come in via Aut and leave over the pass rather than the other way round.
- When
- Frequent short runs Banjar to Jibhi and Shoja; one daily through bus between Banjar and Shimla
- Takes
- Banjar to Jibhi about 1 hour; Banjar to Shimla 6–8 hours
- Fare 2020
- Banjar to Jibhi about ₹20Seen in 2020: a floor, not a price.
SeasonThe pass shuts under snow, in practice December to March. In February 2025 NH305 was closed to all vehicles after 25 cm of snow, reopened first for 4x4s, and the bus service had already been off for 36 days that winter. It is usually clear again by April; in 2026 it reopened in mid-March. Monsoon landslides can also close the Jibhi–Jalori stretch for hours or days. BookingNone for the local runs, pay on board. Run byHRTC.
Hired, booked and on demand
Taxi from Aut or Bhuntar, or a homestay pickup
Aut or Bhuntar airport to Nagini, Gushaini, Jibhi and the valley homestays
Cheapest is to message your homestay the night before and have them send a Banjar-based car to meet the bus at Aut; a Kullu or Bhuntar car costs more because it drives back empty. Otherwise the taxi unions are organised and reachable by phone: Taxi Union Aut (president 94180-70862), Seraj Valley Taxi Operators' Union at Banjar (94180-03138), Tirthan Valley Taxi Union at Gushaini (86288-43115).
- When
- On demand
- Takes
- Aut to Gushaini about 1 hour 15 minutes for roughly 30 km; Aut to Jibhi 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours
- Fare 2026
- Aut to Gushaini or Nagini about ₹800–1,200 for a car seating five or six; Aut to Jibhi ₹1,500–3,000; Bhuntar to Tirthan ₹1,800–2,500
SeasonYear-round. BookingWhatsApp or phone your stay, or call the union numbers above. Agree the fare before you board, peak-season rates creep up. Run byLocal taxi unions at Aut, Banjar and Gushaini; homestay-arranged cars.
GHNP guides and porters for core-zone treks
Gushaini or Sai Ropa into the Tirthan core zone; treks of 3 to 7 days, up to the Tirath source trek of 6–7 days
Permits and guide arrangements go through the GHNP range office at Sai Ropa, 5 km from Banjar on the Gushaini road. Guides work through a local cooperative recognised by the park administration, which sets the rules and rotates work between members so they do not undercut each other; Himalayan Ecotourism at Gushaini is the best known of these. Homestays in Gushaini and Nagini will also put you in touch with registered guides.
- When
- On request; the park issues a limited number of permits each year
- Takes
- 3 to 7 days for the standard core-zone routes
- Fare 2026
- Core-zone entry ₹100 per day for Indians and ₹400 per day for foreigners on the 2026 figures. The Himalayan Ecotourism cooperative publishes a different schedule: ₹400 per day Indian, ₹800 foreign, ₹250 Indian student, ₹500 foreign student, ₹100 per tent. Guide, porter and cook wages are charged per day on top and are quoted per trip, not published
SeasonSpring to autumn. The cooperative does not run treks in monsoon, when trails are overgrown and landslide-prone, and only short routes in winter. BookingPermit at Sai Ropa or Shamshi before you walk in. Routes must be approved by a range officer; certified guides and porters are compulsory for multi-day treks. Run byGHNP forest department; local guides' cooperative including Himalayan Ecotourism.
On foot, by bike, or otherwise
Walking in: the Gushaini bridge and the Rolla trail
Gushaini village to the riverside homestays, and on 8 km up the Tirthan to the GHNP entry gate at Rolla
The bus drops you on the road at Gushaini where it splits three ways, for Sharchi, Batahad and Pekhri. The road crosses the Tirthan on a bridge to reach Gushaini proper, and the homestay belt strung along the river between Nagini and Gushaini is reached on foot from the roadside. Past the village the trail follows the river to the park gate at Rolla. No permit is needed for the day walk as long as you stop at the gate.
- When
- Any time; the Rolla round trip is a daylight-hours walk
- Takes
- A few minutes to half an hour to most homestays. Gushaini to Rolla is 8 km, 4–5 hours up, 5–6 hours round trip
- Fare 2026
- Free. Core-zone entry beyond the gate is ₹100 per day for Indians and ₹400 per day for foreigners
SeasonYear-round for the ecozone walk. Avoid July to mid-September, when trails are leech-ridden and slippery. Leopards and bears come down into the valley in winter. BookingNone for the day walk. Core-zone permits at the GHNP range office at Sai Ropa, between Banjar and Gushaini, or at the head office at Shamshi. Run byNone.
What we could not find out
6 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
No published HRTC timetable for the Aut – Banjar – Gushaini services could be found. The 2021 Kullu depot PDF on hrtchp.com lists a Banjar–Kullu service but the scanned table does not give usable departure times. First and last bus times from Aut are reported second-hand only, so treat 06:30 first and around 17:00 last from Banjar to Gushaini as indicative. Ask at the Banjar stand or ring HRTC Banjar on 01903-221243.
- 02
GHNP entry fees are quoted two ways. The official GHNP fees page no longer prints a table and links a 2020 scan. Secondary sources say ₹100 per day Indian and ₹400 foreign for 2026, while the Himalayan Ecotourism cooperative publishes ₹400 Indian and ₹800 foreign plus ₹100 per tent. Confirm at the Sai Ropa range office before you walk in.
- 03
Guide and porter day rates for GHNP are not published anywhere official. Cooperative treks are quoted as packages. Ask Himalayan Ecotourism or the Sai Ropa office for a current per-day figure.
- 04
Distance from Aut to Gushaini is given as 52 km by the GHNP site but as about 30–34 km by every travel source, which matches the 24 km Aut–Banjar plus 10 km Banjar–Gushaini legs. The shorter figure is probably right.
- 05
Whether any share jeeps run within the valley itself, for example Banjar to Batahad or Pekhri when the bus has gone, could not be confirmed. Ask at Banjar bus stand or the Seraj Valley taxi union.
- 06
Fares on the Aut–Banjar and Banjar–Gushaini buses come from blog reports across 2019 to 2026 and vary from ₹20 to ₹100 for the same legs. Treat them as a range, not a tariff.
What the planner can route today
The options above live on the place page, not in the departure board: a boat that comes when you phone has no time to show. What the board can do for Tirthan Valley is this.
