Chitkul
Chitkul is the end of the road in the Baspa (Sangla) valley, about 60 km up a side road from Karcham on NH-5, and the whole public service is two or three ordinary HRTC buses a day from Reckong Peo plus a handful of long-distance buses that start or finish in the valley – miss them and it is a taxi, a lift or a wait.

Chitkul is a village in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. During winters, the place mostly remains covered with snow and the inhabitants move to lower regions of Himachal.

7 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed seven ways of moving to, from or around Chitkul: five by road, one hired or on demand and one under your own steam, from 20 sources. One of them runs only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be.
The fares were seen in 2025; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. Four fares carry no year, because they could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 1 of the 7 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 21 September 2026, and ends with six things we could not confirm.
By road
HRTC Reckong Peo – Sangla – Rakcham – Chitkul ordinary bus
Reckong Peo – Karcham – Sangla – Rakcham – Chitkul, about 60 km
The main Reckong Peo bus stop is near the HPPWD Circuit House; locals call the town Peo. There is a second stop in Peo market, but board at the main stop because seats fill there. No reservation – buy the ticket on board. Station in-charge for current timings: 01786222444.
- When
- Two to three departures a day. The Reckong Peo timetable lists Chitkul services at 07:00, 09:30 and 12:00, plus 16:00 and 18:00 that only run as far as Rakcham. A Sangla-based operator gives the two main ones as 09:15 and 12:05.
- Takes
- About 3 to 4 hours for roughly 60 km
- Fare 2025
- About ₹100–150 per person for Reckong Peo to Chitkul
SeasonRoughly April to November. Snow closes the Sangla – Chitkul stretch from about December to mid-March, and early snow can cut it in late November. BookingNone for the ordinary buses – pay on board. Ask at the Reckong Peo bus stand the day before. Run byHRTC (Himachal Road Transport Corporation), Reckong Peo depot, plus a few private operators on the same route.
Long-distance HRTC buses that start or end in the Baspa valley
Chitkul and Sangla direct to and from Shimla, Chandigarh, Mandi and Delhi, via Karcham, Rampur and Narkanda
These are the buses the valley actually uses to get out. From Sangla bus stand the board shows Rakcham–Delhi 07:00, Mandi–Shimla–Sangla–Chitkul 08:00, Chitkul–Sangla–Shimla–Mandi 11:15, Chitkul–Shimla–Chandigarh 14:00 and Chitkul–Sangla–Chandigarh 17:00. From Shimla, ISBT Tutikandi has a 07:15 Delhi–Sangla service via Narkanda, Rampur and Karcham. Get to the stand early – the Shimla service is one bus and it fills.
- When
- One or two through services a day in each direction
- Takes
- About 10 to 11 hours Shimla to Sangla; the Delhi service is an overnight, leaving Kashmiri Gate around 22:00 and reaching Sangla about 15:30 the next day
- Fare 2025
- No published Chitkul fare was found. Shimla to Reckong Peo, the nearest priced leg, is about ₹430 ordinary and ₹650 on the Himmani Deluxe; Sangla to Reckong Peo is about ₹100–150.
SeasonYear-round to Sangla, but the Chitkul legs stop when the upper road closes for snow in winter. BookingOrdinary buses are pay-on-board. Some HRTC long-distance services appear on the HRTC portal at hrtchp.com and on agents such as AbhiBus. Run byHRTC.
Sangla to Chitkul, the last 18 km
Sangla – Rakcham – Chitkul
Sangla bus stand is the hinge of the valley – almost everything to Chitkul passes through it. Two buses run up and turn straight round, so a day trip works: take the first one up and come back on the second. The last bus up leaves Sangla about 16:30. Rakcham, halfway, is a good place to walk to in the morning and pick up the Chitkul bus early afternoon.
- When
- Around 12:00 and mid-afternoon up from Sangla, with returns from Chitkul roughly 90 minutes later; a later Sangla departure around 16:30
- Takes
- About 1 hour for 18 km
- Fare
- Not confirmed. This is a short fare-stage hop on the same ordinary buses priced at ₹100–150 for the full Reckong Peo run.
SeasonApril to November; closed by snow roughly December to mid-March. BookingNone, pay on board. Run byHRTC and a few private operators.
Change at Karcham
NH-5 Shimla – Narkanda – Rampur – Jeori – Tapri – Karcham, then the side road up the Baspa valley
Karcham is the junction where the Sangla valley road leaves NH-5, about 20 km before Reckong Peo. If you cannot get a direct Sangla or Chitkul bus, take anything going towards Reckong Peo, get down at Karcham and wait there for a connecting bus or a lift up the valley. It is under 20 km from the junction to Sangla.
- When
- NH-5 traffic towards Reckong Peo is frequent through the day; valley connections follow the Peo – Chitkul bus times
- Takes
- Karcham to Sangla under an hour; Karcham to Chitkul about 2 to 2.5 hours
- Fare
- Not confirmed separately
SeasonThe Karcham – Sangla stretch is the weak link – landslips and falling rock close it for days, sometimes weeks, and heavy snow can shut it for several days in winter. Run byHRTC on NH-5, plus local vehicles up the valley.
Shared cabs out of Chitkul and Sangla
Chitkul – Sangla – Karcham – Reckong Peo
Not a formal service and no counter. Ask at your guesthouse or at the Chitkul bus stand the evening before – drivers running tourists back down to Sangla, Kalpa or Reckong Peo will sell spare seats. One traveller's notes list a shared cab to Sangla at around noon. Bus users fall back on this when they miss the morning service.
- When
- Irregular, when a vehicle is going down and has space; more likely in the April–June and September–October seasons
- Takes
- About 1 hour to Sangla, 2.5 to 3 hours to Reckong Peo
- Fare
- Not confirmed. Agree the seat price with the driver before getting in.
SeasonSeason only; there is almost no traffic to share in winter. BookingNone, arrange it the day before through your guesthouse. Run byPrivate owner-drivers.
Hired, booked and on demand
Taxi from Reckong Peo or Shimla
Reckong Peo – Karcham – Sangla – Rakcham – Chitkul, or the whole run from Shimla
Taxis wait at the Reckong Peo taxi stand, a short walk from the bus stop, and drivers quote a round trip to Chitkul via Sangla. From Shimla and Chandigarh the usual arrangement is a car by the day with a local driver. Hotels and homestays in Sangla and Chitkul will call a driver for you.
- When
- On demand
- Takes
- Reckong Peo to Chitkul about 2.5 to 3 hours each way; Shimla to Sangla about 10 hours
- Fare 2025
- ₹2,500–3,000 for a Reckong Peo – Chitkul return trip as quoted at the taxi stand in 2019; by 2025–2026 the standard rate in Kinnaur is ₹3,500–5,000 a day including the driver's food and stay, and a Shimla – Sangla one-way starts around ₹5,000
SeasonYear-round to Sangla, subject to the upper road being open above Rakcham. BookingAgree the price before you set off; day rates fall the more days you book. Run byLocal owner-drivers through the Reckong Peo taxi stand; taxi stands in Shimla and Chandigarh for the long run.
On foot, by bike, or otherwise
Lifts inside the Baspa valley
Karcham, Sangla, Rakcham and Chitkul
Stand on the valley road and flag down what passes – apple trucks, tourist cars, ITBP and construction vehicles. Locals do this routinely between Sangla and Chitkul because the bus gaps are long. It works best in daylight and in the season when there is traffic at all.
- When
- Whenever something is going your way; traffic thins out sharply above Rakcham and after dark
- Takes
- Sangla to Chitkul about an hour when you get a ride straight through
- Fare
- Usually nothing; offer to chip in for fuel
SeasonPractical April to November. Do not rely on it in winter or in the monsoon. Run byNone.
What we could not find out
6 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
No fare could be confirmed for the direct Chitkul – Shimla or Chitkul – Chandigarh HRTC buses. AbhiBus lists the routes but the page showed no price. Ask at the Sangla or Reckong Peo bus stand, or call the Reckong Peo station in-charge on 01786222444.
- 02
Shared jeep and shared taxi seat prices in the Baspa valley are unconfirmed. Sources disagree on whether a regular shared service exists at all: a 2017 exchange on solobackpacker.com says there are no shared taxis between Reckong Peo and Chitkul, while later writers describe shared cabs. Treat it as ad hoc.
- 03
Departure times from Chitkul itself are less well documented than arrivals. A 2019 account lists a 06:00 private bus to Reckong Peo, a 14:00 bus, a 15:30 direct to Chandigarh and a 09:30 to Mandi; the 2025 Sangla board partly matches but not exactly. Confirm at the Chitkul bus stand the day before.
- 04
No permit is needed for Indians or foreigners to reach Chitkul – the inner line starts further up, beyond the village, and beyond Jangi on the Spiti road. Movement past Chitkul towards Ranikanda and the Tibet frontier is controlled by the ITBP and is not open to civilians.
- 05
Season: heavy snow closes the Sangla – Chitkul road from roughly December to mid-March, and local administration and ITBP at Mastrang near Rakcham run snow cutters to reopen it. The Karcham – Sangla stretch is separately vulnerable to landslides, worst in July and August. Check connectivity before committing to a night in the valley.
- 06
Attempts to read live HRTC route and fare data from the booking portal at online.hrtchp.com failed – the site does not expose a public route listing, and redbus blocked automated requests.
What the planner can route today
The options above live on the place page, not in the departure board: a boat that comes when you phone has no time to show. What the board can do for Chitkul is this.
