Tiger Leaping Gorge and Qiaotou
Tiger Leaping Gorge is not a town and has no station: you arrive on the Lijiang to Shangri-La road and get off at Qiaotou, the roadside settlement that is officially Hutiaoxia town (虎跳峡镇), and walk or take a shared car from there. Morning buses from Lijiang bus station take 2 to 2.5 hours and are the workhorse; buses running south from Shangri-La will also drop you, and Lijiang Transport Group now sells scenic-area direct coaches to the gorge through a WeChat mini-programme. The Lijiang to Shangri-La railway opened in November 2023 and runs eleven trains a day in 70 to 110 minutes, but it does not help you reach the gorge directly: of thirteen stations on the line, only Lijiang, Lashihai, Xiaozhongdian and Shangri-La handle passengers, so the train is a way of reaching one end of the road, not of reaching the trailhead. On the ground the walk is the transport: the High Trail climbs from Changsheng village past Naxi Family Guesthouse, the ticket office, the 28 switchbacks and Tea-Horse to the guesthouses at Bendiwan, and guesthouse minivans move people and bags along the road below while their guests walk. The two banks of the gorge are run as two separate businesses with separate tickets, and since April 2025 the middle gorge - the ladders down to the river, the maintenance tolls the ladder families charged, and the photo rocks that made them famous - has been closed as undeveloped ground after a run of deaths. Rain closes the rest at a few hours' notice: the Shangri-La side shut on 30 May, 10 June and 31 July 2026 for rockfall and landslide.

10 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed six ways of moving to, from or around Tiger Leaping Gorge: four by road, one by rail and cable and one under your own steam, from 22 sources. Four entries are not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. Two of them run only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be.
The fares were seen in 2018 to 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. We rate 5 of the 10 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 28 September 2026, and ends with six things we could not confirm.
By road
Lijiang to Qiaotou bus
Lijiang Bus Station (丽江客运站, 25 Kangzhong Road) to Qiaotou / Hutiaoxia town (桥头, 虎跳峡镇)
Buy at the long-distance bus station south of the old town, not at the railway station, and ask for Qiaotou (桥头) rather than a Tiger Leaping Gorge ticket, which can be a dearer fare that carries on past the trailhead. Bring your passport to buy. You are set down on the roadside in the town, not at a terminal, so agree with the driver where you want out.
- When
- Morning departures every 30 to 60 minutes
- Takes
- 2h to 2h 30m
- Fare 2024
- ¥24-33 per seat; private minivans touting at the station have quoted ¥400-500 for the whole car
SeasonYear-round, subject to road closures in the rainy season. BookingCounter at the station, or the operator's 丽交出行生活 WeChat mini-programme, which carried 58 per cent of its ticket sales in 2024. Run byLijiang Transport Group (丽江交运) and other operators from Lijiang bus station.
Shangri-La and Dali buses that drop at Qiaotou
Shangri-La bus station south towards Lijiang, Dali and Kunming, passing Qiaotou
At Shangri-La bus station, at the north end of Changzheng Road, ask for any Lijiang, Dali or Kunming service and say you want out at Qiaotou (桥头). Coming the other way, stand on the main road in Qiaotou and flag what passes; there is no ticket office for through buses.
- When
- At least hourly during the day
- Takes
- About 2h from Shangri-La; the full Shangri-La to Lijiang run is about 2h 30m on the expressway
- Fare 2024
- Around ¥30 from Shangri-La to Qiaotou
SeasonYear-round. BookingNone for a flag-down; buy at the counter in Shangri-La. Run byShangri-La bus station operators.
Shared cars and guesthouse pickups from Qiaotou to the trailhead
Qiaotou / Hutiaoxia town to Changsheng village (长胜村) trailhead, Naxi Family Guesthouse, and along the road to Tina's and Walnut Grove
Drivers wait on the main road in Qiaotou and around the bridge and will find you before you find them. The old trailhead in Qiaotou itself is no longer the start: construction moved the practical start about 3 km east to Changsheng village, so ask for 长胜村 or for your guesthouse by name. Naxi Family will send a jeep or a horse if you telephone ahead. Confirm whether a quoted price is per seat or for the whole car before you get in.
- When
- When full, through the day
- Takes
- 10 to 20 minutes to the trailhead
- Fare 2026
- A carpool driver quoted ¥80 per person one way to the gorge in February 2026, and ¥300 for a guide on top
SeasonYear-round. BookingNone for the shared cars; telephone the guesthouse for a pickup. Run byPrivate owner-drivers and guesthouses.
Guesthouse minivans onward to Haba, Baishuitai and back to Lijiang
Walnut Grove and Tina's to Haba village, and the Lijiang to Baishuitai road that passes Haba
Book at the desk of Tina's, Sean's or Jane's the evening before, and say in the same conversation where your stored luggage is, because the van can stop for it in Qiaotou on the way past. A minibus to Haba takes about 90 minutes on the paved road. The alternative is a morning bus from Lijiang towards Baishuitai, getting off at Haba in the early afternoon, or the daily 13:30 bus down from Shangri-La. Signs at Sean's advertising transport to Lijiang do not run every day.
- When
- On demand, arranged the day before; the Shangri-La to Haba bus is once a day at 13:30
- Takes
- About 1h 30m Walnut Grove to Haba; about 4h Shangri-La to Haba
- Fare 2018
- Around ¥150 for the minibus from Walnut Grove, ¥60 on the Shangri-La bus, ¥38 on the Lijiang to Baishuitai bus; all of these are old Wikivoyage figures and were not reconfirmedSeen in 2018: a floor, not a price.
SeasonYear-round; the road east of Walnut Grove is exposed to rockfall, worst in wind. BookingAsk at the guesthouse the day before and confirm whether the price is per seat or per vehicle. Run byGuesthouses at Walnut Grove and Middle Gorge; Shangri-La bus station.
By rail and cable
Lijiang to Shangri-La bullet trains (丽香铁路)
Lijiang - Lashihai - Xiaozhongdian - Shangri-La, 139 km
Lijiang station is about 7 km south of the old town; Shangri-La station is on Shika Road on the west side of town. The line runs the length of the gorge and crosses it on the new bridges you can see from the first hour of the High Trail, but there is no passenger station at the gorge: of thirteen stations, only Lijiang, Lashihai and Shangri-La were opened for passengers, with Xiaozhongdian taking passengers and freight. Use the train to reach either end, then a bus or car to Qiaotou.
- When
- 11 trains a day Lijiang to Shangri-La on 5 October 2026, first 07:30, last 21:12
- Takes
- 1h 10m to 1h 50m
- Fare 2026
- Second class ¥56-70, first class ¥89-111, business class ¥194-243, Lijiang to Shangri-La; fares are deliberately variable by train
SeasonYear-round; opened 26 November 2023. Booking12306 app or website, ID or passport required; ticket offices at both stations. Run byChina Railway Kunming Group.
On foot, by bike, or otherwise
The High Trail (高路徒步)
Changsheng village - Naxi Family Guesthouse (Nuoyu) - ticket office - 28 switchbacks - Tea-Horse Trade Guesthouse - Bendiwan (Halfway) - Middle Gorge at Tina's
The start was marked by the Trekking Tour Starting Point Family House (高路徒步起点民居) in 2024. The scenic area's own recommended line is Hutiaoxia town, Naxi Family, the 28 bends, Tea-Horse and Halfway, all within the upper gorge. Two days is normal with a night at Bendiwan; the descent from Halfway towards Tina's is steep and should not be started after dark. Men with horses and donkeys wait near the 28 bends and will carry you or your bag.
- When
- Walk when you like; guesthouses are spaced for two days
- Takes
- About 6h 30m Changsheng to Bendiwan, then 2h to Middle Gorge
- Fare 2024
- Horse or donkey near the 28 switchbacks ¥150-300 to carry a walker, about ¥50 for a bag
SeasonMarch to May and October to November are the settled months; June to September is the rainy season and landslides can close the gorge. BookingNone; telephone ahead for a bed in high season. Run byNone; the trail is public with guesthouses along it.
Rules, permits and closures
Gorge tickets, and the fact that there are two of them
Ticket office on the High Trail just past Naxi Family Guesthouse; separate gates on the road on each bank
The trail ticket office is a few minutes beyond Naxi Family Guesthouse, and maps showing distances and guesthouses are handed out there. The two sides of the river are run by two different companies - Lijiang Tiger Leaping Gorge Scenic Area Management Co on the Lijiang bank and Diqing Shangri-La Tiger Leaping Gorge Tourism Co on the Shangri-La bank - so a ticket for one bank is not a ticket for the other. Alipay and WeChat are accepted almost everywhere; the Qiaotou cash machines take Chinese cards only.
- When
- Ticket office staffed in daylight
- Takes
- n/a
- Fare 2024
- ¥45 for an open-ended trek ticket in February 2024, with student and senior reductions; the road-access upper gorge on each bank is priced separately and that price is not confirmed here
SeasonYear-round when the gorge is open. BookingPay at the gate. Run by丽江市虎跳峡景区经营管理有限公司 (Lijiang bank); 迪庆州香格里拉虎跳峡旅游经营有限公司 (Shangri-La bank).
Middle Gorge, the ladders and their tolls are closed
Teacher Zhang's path (张老师小道), the 168 Brave Man's Ladder (勇者梯) and the river-level rocks below Middle Gorge
You will still be offered this. Do not take it. Only the upper gorge is a developed, open scenic area; the middle and lower gorges are undeveloped ground and Shangri-La's culture and tourism bureau has published a notice banning walking, exploring and photography there. The ladders that used to take you down to the river were built in 2008 by a local woman whose family runs Teacher Zhang's guesthouse, and the guesthouse collected a ¥10 maintenance charge from each user; both the path and the ladders were shut on 22 April 2025 and are guarded. A man was swept into the Jinsha on 25 February 2026 and an eight-year-old died on the high-trail route four days earlier.
- When
- Closed indefinitely
- Takes
- n/a
- Fare 2025
- The ladder families charged ¥10 a head before the closure; guides charged several hundred to over a thousand yuan for a middle or lower gorge trip and have stopped selling it
SeasonClosed since 22 April 2025, with no reopening date announced. Run byLocal households; policed by the scenic area and Hutiaoxia town government.
Rain closes the gorge at a few hours' notice
The riverside road through the gorge (旅游东环线) and both scenic areas
Closures are announced on the scenic areas' own WeChat accounts, usually the evening before or the morning of, and the road is the thing that shuts. In 2026 the Shangri-La side closed at 10:00 on 30 May and reopened at 07:30 the next morning, closed at 08:00 on 10 June and reopened at 07:30 on 11 June, and closed at 08:00 on 31 July with no reopening date. On 18 July 2026 a flash flood on the Yuxin bridge section of the Lijiang side cut walkways and stranded visitors, who were all moved out by 19:05 and had their tickets refunded. Longer shutdowns happen for roadworks: the whole gorge was closed from 1 November 2020 to 30 April 2021 while the Hutiaoxia to Jiangbian road was rebuilt.
- When
- Several times a rainy season
- Takes
- A day or two for rockfall, months for roadworks
- Fare 2026
- No charge; the Lijiang side refunded the day's tickets for visitors caught in the July 2026 flood
SeasonJune to September rains are the trigger; winter closures have been for construction. Run byThe two scenic-area companies, with the county government for road closures.
Registering with the police as a foreign visitor
Any guesthouse on the trail or in Qiaotou
Hotels file your registration themselves. The family guesthouses on the High Trail are private homes rather than registered hotels, so the rule that applies is the one for lodging outside a hotel: you, or the person putting you up, must register with the public security organ where you are staying within 24 hours of arriving. Since 21 September 2026 that can be done online through the immigration administration website, the NIA 12367 app or its WeChat and Alipay mini-programmes, which is easier than finding a police station in the gorge. Ask at check-in who is filing it.
- When
- Once per place you stay
- Takes
- n/a
- Fare 2026
- Free
SeasonYear-round. BookingOnline through the NIA channels, or in person at the local public security office. Run byNational Immigration Administration and local public security.
What we could not find out
6 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
The brief said the Lijiang to Shangri-La railway would change how people reach the gorge. It has not, directly: Xinhua's opening report lists only Lijiang, Lashihai, Xiaozhongdian and Shangri-La as passenger stations on the 139 km line, and the 12306 station list contains no Hutiaoxia or Qiaotou stop. Whether the road buses have thinned since the trains started is not established here; ask at Lijiang bus station on +86 888 5121106.
- 02
The brief described guesthouse minivans moving bags between Naxi Family, Tea Horse, Halfway and Tina's as a routine shuttle. What is documented is luggage storage in Qiaotou at Jane's, and transport arranged at Tina's and Sean's with a collection stop on the way; no fare or timetable for a bag-only transfer between the trail guesthouses could be confirmed. Telephone Halfway Lodge on +86 133-6884-4698 or Tina's on +86 887 8202258.
- 03
The brief described the ladders to the Middle Rapids and private family tolls in the present tense. Teacher Zhang's path and the 168 ladder have been closed since 22 April 2025 and the ¥10 maintenance charge is historic. Nothing found says when or whether they reopen.
- 04
No current price could be confirmed for the road-access upper gorge tickets on either bank. Hong Kong 01's January 2026 Yunnan guide quotes roughly HK$100, which is a rounded traveller figure rather than a published tariff. The scenic-area companies publish on WeChat, which is not reachable from here.
- 05
Winter ice on the High Trail could not be confirmed. Wikivoyage describes winter as dry, sunny and cold rather than icy, and every 2025-26 closure found was rain-driven rockfall, not ice. Ask a guesthouse before walking between December and February.
- 06
Reachability, stated plainly: Yunnan government sites blocked this network. www.yunnan.gov.cn, www.lijiang.gov.cn, www.shangri-la.gov.cn and www.ynjtt.com refused the connection and www.diqing.gov.cn and yunnan.cn returned 403; www.hutiaoxia.com does not resolve. Chinese intercity bus booking sites bus365.com and changtu.com also refused. What did work: 12306 (both the station list and the live timetable and fare endpoints), Xinhua, People's Daily Yunnan, The Paper, Sohu, Beijing News, Sichuan Daily's Cbgc, China Transport News and ifeng. So the file is built on national publishers and the railway operator, not on the prefecture.
