Luang Namtha
Two bus stations, one 10 km out of town and one in the middle of it, a railway station 37 km away that the town has no ticket office for, and a trekking industry that is the reason most people come and that will not take you into the park unbooked.

12 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed ten ways of moving to, from or around Luang Namtha: three hired or on demand, three by road, one by rail and cable, one by water and two under your own steam, from 37 sources. Two entries are not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. Three of them run only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. Three need a phone call or a message before you turn up.
The fares were seen in 2025 to 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. Seven fares carry no year, because they could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 6 of the 12 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 28 September 2026, and ends with nine things we could not confirm.
Hired, booked and on demand
Tuk-tuks and chartered songthaews
outer bus station, airport and the Boat Landing pier into the new town
Tuk-tuks meet arriving buses at the outer station 10 km south of town and arriving flights at the airport; there is no need to find them, they find you. In the other direction they are on the main street near the night market. Local transport around town is otherwise pickup-truck songthaews with no fixed routes, which you charter rather than board. The new town itself is small enough to walk.
- When
- on demand, and concentrated around bus and flight arrivals
- Takes
- 15 to 20 minutes from the outer bus station, about 10 minutes from the airport
- Fare
- Wikivoyage still quotes 10,000 kip a head from the outer station and 20,000 kip if you are alone, and says the inbound 10,000 kip is non-negotiable while the outbound is bargainable for a group. That figure could not be confirmed against a current source and predates the kip's fall.
Seasonyear-round. Bookingnone; agree the price before you get in. Run byowner-drivers.
Taxi between town and Nateuy railway station
Luang Namtha town to Ban Nateuy station, 37 km on Highway 3
The tourism division's answer is to ask your hotel to arrange it, and to come to the Tourism Information Center in Phonxay village if the hotel cannot. Coming the other way you do not need to arrange anything, because minivans wait at the station for each train. The alternative is the 09:00 or 14:00 district bus towards Boten, which passes Nateuy.
- When
- on demand, arranged the day before through a hotel
- Takes
- about 45 minutes
- Fare
- 180,000 kip for a four-seat car and 150,000 kip for a six-seater on the tourism division's undated price list, which labels both per passenger although the figures read like a vehicle rate. Confirm which before you get in.
Seasonyear-round. Bookingthrough your guesthouse, or +856 20 5519 7666 / +856 20 5703 2099. Run bylocal car owners arranged through hotels and the Tourism Information Center.
Nam Ha protected area treks
from the agency offices on the main street out to a trailhead village by minivan, then on foot
A dozen or so agencies sit within a block of the night market in Phonexay and Phonsay villages, and the provincial Tourism Information Center runs its own guide service behind the night market. For an overnight trek, or any trek inside the Nam Ha protected area, you must book through a company: you cannot walk in. Agencies post outside who has already signed up for which departure, because the price per head falls sharply with group size, so the practical move is to arrive, read the boards and join an existing group. A day trek leaves the office about 08:30, drives half an hour out, picks up a village guide, and is back by 16:30.
- When
- daily departures in season, subject to a group forming
- Takes
- one to five days; one-day treks are about four hours of walking
- Fare 2026
- The Hiker's one-day Nam Ha trek is US$89 for one person, US$50 each for two, US$44 for three, US$39 for four, US$34 for five, US$29 for six and US$25 each at eight or nine, the maximum. Water, meals, English-speaking guide, village guide, transport, government taxes, entrance fees and travel permits are included.
SeasonCool season November to February, hot March to June, rain July to October. The kayak and raft descents are better in the green season from June to October when the river is up. Bookingin person on the main street, or by WhatsApp with the company; the Tourism Information Center is open Monday to Friday 08:00-11:30 and 13:30-16:00. Run byabout thirteen licensed companies including Green Discovery, The Hiker, Forest Retreat, Discovering Laos, Eco Voyage Laos, Ethnic Travel and Wild Adventure; six of them are cleared to run kayaks on the Nam Ha.
By road
Outer bus station, long distance
Huay Xai (Bokeo), Oudomxay, Nong Khiaw, Luang Prabang, Vientiane, Phongsaly, Dien Bien Phu
The long-distance station is about 10 km south of the centre on Highway 3; the old station opposite the market was demolished. Buy in town the day before from an agent if you want a guaranteed seat, or at the station office, which sells the following day's tickets in the afternoon. Station tickets take priority for seating. Arrive an hour early or you sit on a plastic stool in the aisle. Some services do not appear on the board at all, such as the Bokeo to Oudomxay bus that pulls in for lunch around 13:00 and will take extra passengers if you ask the driver by the restaurants.
- When
- Huay Xai 08:30 and 12:00, Oudomxay 08:30 and 14:00, Nong Khiaw 08:30, Phongsaly 09:00, Luang Prabang around 09:00, Vientiane in the afternoon. The 08:30 Phongsaly service routes through China and carries Lao and Chinese nationals only.
- Takes
- Huay Xai 190 km and about four hours, Oudomxay 115 km, Luang Prabang 310 km and eight to twelve hours depending on the road, Vientiane overnight
- Fare 2025
- Luang Namtha Tourism Division lists Huay Xai 150,000 kip, Oudomxay 130,000, Nong Khiaw 250,000, Phongsaly 300,000. Hobo Maps recorded the same 150,000 kip Huay Xai fare in March 2025 and said other fares had risen about 20 per cent. The June 2024 station board still showed Luang Prabang 150,000 and Vientiane 380,000.
Seasonyear-round; the Luang Prabang road is slow and landslide-prone in the rains. Bookingagent in town the day before, or the station office the afternoon before. Run byprovincial state bus company and private minivan operators.
Inner bus station, district services
Muang Sing, Muang Long, Vieng Phoukha, Nalae and Nateuy to Boten
The district station is in the town itself, on the main road west of the guesthouse strip, and is a different place from the long-distance station. Small and mid-size buses and songthaews. This is where you catch the far north-west: Muang Sing 58 km on the paved Highway 17 through the edge of the Nam Ha protected area, then Muang Long 110 km beyond it, and from Muang Long a midday bus on to Xieng Kok on the Mekong.
- When
- Muang Sing 08:00, 10:30 and 12:00; Muang Long 08:00 and 14:00; Nalae 09:00 and 14:00; Nateuy and Boten 09:00 and 14:00. Coming back, Muang Sing puts out buses roughly every hour and a half from 08:00 to 15:30, and Muang Long runs Muang Sing three times a morning and Xieng Kok around 12:00.
- Takes
- Muang Sing about 1h 30m, Muang Long about 3h 30m, Muang Long to Xieng Kok 22 km in about 50 minutes
- Fare
- Luang Namtha Tourism Division's undated board lists Muang Sing 100,000 kip, Muang Long 180,000 kip and Nateuy or Boten 100,000 kip, with no price against Nalae. Older photographed boards give the shape of the shorter hops: Muang Long to Xieng Kok 20,000 kip a seat or 200,000 kip to charter the vehicle, Muang Long to Muang Sing 30,000 a seat or 400,000 to charter, Muang Long to Luang Namtha 50,000 a seat or 800,000 to charter.
Seasonyear-round; the Muang Long and Xieng Kok roads are dusty in the dry season and can be cut in the rains. Bookingturn up; for Muang Long be there by 07:30 to be sure of a seat. Run byprovincial services and private songthaew owners.
Cross-border buses from Yunnan
Jinghong to Xieng Kok via the Mengman Chahe port, and Mengla or Jinghong to Luang Namtha via Mohan and Boten
The Jinghong to Xieng Kok service opened on 11 April 2026 and is the second cross-border bus route between the two countries; it reaches the far north-west corner of the province directly instead of via Luang Namtha and Muang Sing. The older route is the Mengla or Jinghong bus through Mohan and Boten to Luang Namtha, which drops you in the middle of town in the late afternoon. On that one you carry your own baggage through the Chinese customs hall and the same coach waits on the far side.
- When
- Jinghong to Xieng Kok one round trip a day; Mengla to Luang Namtha usually a morning and an afternoon departure, Jinghong one late-morning departure
- Takes
- Jinghong to Xieng Kok seven to eight hours over about 280 km; Mengla to Luang Namtha four to five hours depending on the border queue
- Fare 2026
- Jinghong to Xieng Kok 158 yuan, about 300,000 kip or US$22. Fares on the older Mengla and Jinghong buses to Luang Namtha could not be confirmed to a current source.
Seasonyear-round. Bookingbuy a day ahead at the Chinese bus station, where the Jinghong service tends to sell out. Run byYunnan provincial operators with Lao counterparts.
By rail and cable
Laos-China Railway at Nateuy (Boten Junction)
Nateuy station to Boten, Namor, Oudomxay, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and Vientiane
There is no railway station in or near Luang Namtha town. The nearest is Ban Nateuy, 37 km away at the Boten junction on Highway 3, and as of mid-2024 nowhere in Luang Namtha town was selling tickets for departures from it. Buy at the station itself, in cash, with the passport you will travel on, and be there an hour before departure with a ticket or 90 minutes without one. Only some trains call: the international D88 and the C86 fast train northbound, and a matching pair southbound. Minivans usually wait outside the station when a train arrives to run passengers into Luang Namtha.
- When
- a small number of calls a day in each direction, out of roughly ten train paths on the line
- Takes
- Nateuy to Luang Prabang about 1h 40m on a fast train, to Vientiane about 3h 30m
- Fare 2026
- From Nateuy in kip, second class on the fast train then ordinary-train seat: Boten 25,000 and 22,000; Namor 31,000 and 25,000; Oudomxay 94,000 and 70,000; Luang Prabang 252,000 and 182,000; Vientiane 626,000 and 449,000. Ordinary sleeper to Vientiane 1,110,000. Add 20,000 kip a ticket if you buy through the app or at an office that is not a station.
Seasonyear-round. BookingUp to three days ahead in Laos at a station, cash, name printed on the ticket. The LCR Ticket app works from a Lao, Thai or Chinese phone and many foreigners cannot complete payment on it. No international ticket to Mohan or Kunming is sold from Nateuy. Run byLaos-China Railway Company; Nateuy station 021-891039, passenger hotline 021-891888.
Rules, permits and closures
Boten to Mohan, the Chinese border
Luang Namtha to Boten 62 km, then the Boten International Checkpoint into Mohan, Yunnan
Take the 09:00 or 14:00 district bus from the inner station to Boten, or a through bus from Mengla or Jinghong that crosses with you. Boten railway station is about 4 km short of the border post, so if you arrive by train you need a shared taxi for that last stretch. On the Chinese side Mohan's hall is several hundred metres further on, with golf carts shuttling between the two.
- When
- checkpoint open daily; buses from the inner station at 09:00 and 14:00
- Takes
- allow over 30 minutes queueing on the Lao side and up to two hours on the Chinese side, where non-citizens get a long questioning
- Fare 2026
- 60,000 kip or 20 RMB for the shared taxi from Boten station to the border post, 5 RMB for the golf cart between the two halls, and a 10,000 kip tourism fee collected at the checkpoint through the Easy Pass electronic system
Seasonyear-round, but the Boten area floods: streams came over the roads into the checkpoint itself in August 2026. BookingLao visas are issued on arrival at Boten for most nationalities. Going the other way you need a Chinese visa in advance; there is a Chinese consulate in Luang Namtha and agents in town who will send a passport to Vientiane. Run byLao and Chinese immigration; Boten Special Economic Zone.
The wet season and what it closes
Highway 13 North, Highway 3, the airport and the river
The Luang Namtha Provincial Department of Public Works and Transport issues road notices; Lao Airlines posts flight suspensions; the provincial tourism division and the trekking agencies know which trails are walkable. Northern Laos floods badly and recently: after heavy rain on 28 and 29 August 2026 the department closed National Route 13 North from the Oudomxay provincial border to the Boten border, 34 villages were inundated, and the province was declared a disaster zone on 30 August. Lao Airlines suspended Vientiane to Luang Namtha flights when water reached the airport, with free date changes or refunds. Typhoon Yagi did much the same in September 2024, closing the airport when the runway flooded.
- When
- the south-west monsoon arrives between May and July and lasts into October; serious flooding has hit in each of the last several wet seasons
- Takes
- road closures of days to weeks; flight suspensions until the airport dries out
- Fare
- no charge to change a suspended Lao Airlines ticket
Seasonrain July to October, best weather November to February. Bookingleave slack either side of a wet-season crossing to Oudomxay or Boten. Run byProvincial Department of Public Works and Transport; Lao Airlines.
By water
Nam Tha river boats to Nalae and the Mekong
the Boat Landing pier downstream through Nalae district towards Houei Lao and, with a private boat, on to Houay Xai on the Mekong
There is no scheduled passenger service. You hire a boat and book the trip at the Visitor Information Center or through one of the trekking agencies, and a tuk-tuk takes you out to the pier at the Boat Landing guesthouse. Below Nalae the boat runs rapids and passes local cargo boats working between villages; Ban Khone Kham, a Tai Lue weaving village, is the usual overnight stop for people going all the way through to the Mekong.
- When
- on demand, by charter
- Takes
- one day to Nalae, two days through to the Mekong with a village overnight
- Fare
- One source quotes US$170-400 for a boat taking four to ten people over two days from Luang Namtha, and the Huay Xai end quotes around 1,500,000 kip or 6,000 baht to charter a six to ten seat boat upstream. Neither is dated and the boat carries fewer people at the end of the dry season.
SeasonThe upper river towards Luang Namtha may be too shallow to run from November, and dam building on the Nam Tha has changed the river. Ask before you plan around it. BookingVisitor Information Center or an agency, a day or more ahead. Run byvillage boatmen arranged through the Visitor Information Center, Boat Landing and the trekking agencies.
On foot, by bike, or otherwise
Motorbike hire on the main street
Highway 17 to Muang Sing and Muang Long, Highway 3 south to Vieng Phoukha, and the valley villages
Two rental shops on the main street between the Manichanh and Zuela guesthouses, plus bikes across from the night market. Semi-automatic Honda Dream copies rather than big bikes; for the unpaved roads out of Muang Long towards Xieng Kok you want a dirt bike. The tourism information centres in Muang Sing and Muang Long hand out village maps and current road conditions, and Muang Long runs two- and three-day guided motorbike routes that assume you hired the bike in Luang Namtha.
- When
- walk-up during shop hours
- Takes
- Muang Sing 58 km, Vieng Phoukha 60 km, Muang Long just over 100 km
- Fare
- A current daily rate could not be confirmed. Wikivoyage's 30,000 to 50,000 kip a day including a helmet predates the fall in the kip and should not be relied on.
Seasonyear-round; unpaved sections are dusty in the dry season and badly eroded in the rains. Bookingnone, but read the shop's return-time rule or you pay for an extra day. Run byindependent shops.
Bicycles and the signed Namtha Valley Route
a signed loop through eight ethnic villages and five cultural sites around the Luang Namtha valley
Same two shops on the main street between Manichanh and Zuela. Take a mountain bike rather than a town bike if you intend to ride the whole loop, and test it before you leave. The route is waymarked: a map board stands in front of the market where the loop starts and every village and site on it has its own information board. It is the standard thing to do on the day you arrive, before a trek or a bus out.
- When
- walk-up during shop hours
- Takes
- one to four hours depending on how much of the loop you ride
- Fare
- A current rate could not be confirmed. Wikivoyage's 15,000 kip a day or 3,000 kip an hour for a good mountain bike is old and predates the fall in the kip.
Seasonyear-round; the valley is flat, so this works even in the rains between showers. Bookingnone; return by end of day or you are charged for another. Run byindependent shops on the main street.
What we could not find out
9 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
Correction to the brief: Xieng Kok is on the Myanmar border, not the Thai one. It sits on the Mekong opposite Shan State, with the Laos-Myanmar Friendship Bridge opened there in May 2015, and the Lao-Myanmar land border nearby at Ban Houay Koum. The nearest Thai crossing is at Huay Xai, 190 km south.
- 02
Correction to the brief: the bus station is not simply 10 km out of town, there are two stations. The long-distance one is about 10 km south on Highway 3; a separate district station in the town itself runs Muang Sing, Muang Long, Vieng Phoukha, Nalae and the Boten service that passes Nateuy.
- 03
Correction to the brief and to Wikivoyage: there is no railway station in or near Luang Namtha town. Wikivoyage's Luang Namtha article describes a train 'to Luang Namtha'; the station is Ban Nateuy, 37 km away by the tourism division's reckoning and about 30 km by Hobo Maps'. Confirmed that seat61.com/Laos.htm mentions Boten twelve times but never Nateuy, Luang Namtha, Oudomxay, Muang Xay or Namor, so seat61 is not usable for this station.
- 04
Which specific trains call at Nateuy could not be pinned down with confidence. The Hobo Maps timetable image shows calls by the D88 international train and the C86 fast train northbound with a matching southbound pair, but the image is dense and should be re-read against the Laos-China Railway Facebook page before the times are published.
- 05
No operator data endpoint was found for the Laos-China Railway. The company has no English website, sells through the 'LCR ticket' app, and posts remaining seat counts only on its Lao-language Facebook page. Lao Skyway's api.laoskyway.com is already in the inventory but does not serve Luang Namtha.
- 06
Current daily rates for motorbike and bicycle hire could not be confirmed from any reachable source. The two shops on the main street between Manichanh and Zuela guesthouses are the place to ask, or the Tourism Information Center on +856 20 5519 7666.
- 07
The Luang Namtha Tourism Division's bus and taxi fare page carries no date, and labels the Nateuy taxi fares 'per passenger' in a way that reads like a vehicle rate. Worth confirming on the ground.
- 08
Nam Tha river charter prices are undated on every source found, and the effect of the Nam Tha dams on navigability below Luang Namtha was not confirmed. Ask at the Visitor Information Center.
- 09
Lao Airlines and Lao Skyway schedules for Luang Namtha could not be verified: the tourism division's page lists QV601 and QV602 Monday to Friday with times that do not reconcile, and flights were suspended for flooding at the end of August 2026.
What the planner can route today
The options above live on the place page, not in the departure board: a boat that comes when you phone has no time to show. What the board can do for Luang Namtha is this.
