San Pedro de Atacama
Everyone reaches San Pedro through Calama, 100 km away – by shared minivan from El Loa airport, or by the cheap regional buses that run from Calama roughly hourly. The town itself is twelve small blocks and a bicycle is the standard way to get around and out to the nearer sights; everything further away is a tour, a hired car or nothing. San Pedro sits at 2,400 m and most of what people come to see is above 4,000 m, so the first day is an acclimatisation day whether you plan it or not.

8 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed seven ways of moving to, from or around San Pedro de Atacama: four by road, two hired or on demand and one under your own steam, from 30 sources. One entry is not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so.
The fares were seen in 2024 to 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. We rate 1 of the 8 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 22 September 2026, and ends with eight things we could not confirm.
By road
Calama airport shared shuttle and private transfer
El Loa airport (CJC), Calama, to hotels in San Pedro de Atacama, about 100 km
There is no bus from the airport itself. Transvip and Altiplanico sell minivan transfers at booths inside the terminal and no reservation is needed – you buy on arrival and wait for the van to fill. Shared vans drop you at your hotel door in San Pedro; a private car costs several times more. Uber bookings in Calama are routinely cancelled and are not a reliable plan. If you would rather take the cheap regional bus instead, take a taxi or colectivo from the airport into Calama first and pick the bus up there. Airport WiFi is unreliable, so download your booking before you land.
- When
- Vans go as flights land through the day; there is no published timetable
- Takes
- About 1h 15m to 1h 30m
- Fare 2026
- Shared minivan around CLP 20,000 per person; an InDrive car was about CLP 70,000 for the car in August 2026
SeasonYear-round. BookingBuy at the airport booth on arrival, or online with Transvip in advance. Run byTransvip, Altiplanico; Licancabur also named in older sources.
Calama – San Pedro regional buses
Calama to San Pedro de Atacama, about 100 km on a good paved road climbing to 2,400 m
This is the cheap and frequent way in, and the one locals use. Frontera del Norte, Atacama 2000, Araksaya, Amanecer, Ciktur and Pullman all run it. Note that Calama's bus arrangements changed in 2026: the Avenida Granaderos terminal closed on 11 April 2026 and services moved to the new terminal at the southern exit of the city, which the línea 77 colectivo has served since 3 August 2026 for CLP 1,500 from any boarding point. In San Pedro the buses use the Terminal de Buses on Tumisa, inside the craft village about 1 km southeast of the centre – an easy walk into town with a bag. Hitchhiking to San Pedro is common and usually works from the Topater monolith on the Calama side.
- When
- Roughly hourly through the day; the timetable posted at San Pedro's terminal listed about eighteen weekday departures to Calama between 07:10 and 19:30
- Takes
- 1h 30m to 2h
- Fare 2026
- CLP 3,000–5,000 one way
SeasonYear-round. The altiplanic winter rains of January and February, and occasional snow, close routes in the Province of El Loa for a day at a time. BookingBuy at the counter on the day; only worth booking ahead around Chilean public holidays. Run byBuses Frontera del Norte, Buses Atacama 2000, Araksaya, Amanecer, Ciktur, Pullman, Chile Bus.
Long-distance Tur Bus and Pullman services
Santiago, Antofagasta, Iquique and Arica to San Pedro de Atacama, most of them via Calama
Tur Bus and Pullman run direct coaches into San Pedro, but the received wisdom on this route is to buy to Calama instead and change: national buses to Calama are far more frequent because of the airport and the copper mines, and the short regional leg is cheaper than the through fare. If you do arrive in Calama on a national coach and want the cheap regional bus, get off in the centre rather than riding on to the main terminal. Overnight buses from Iquique and Arica reach Calama before dawn and the companies normally let you sleep on board until morning.
- When
- Antofagasta about every 2 hours; Santiago, Iquique and Arica mostly overnight departures
- Takes
- Antofagasta about 4 hours, Arica about 12 hours, Santiago roughly 22–24 hours
- Fare 2026
- Antofagasta about CLP 9,000; Arica about CLP 22,000
SeasonYear-round. BookingOnline through the operators or an aggregator such as recorrido.cl; book ahead for Santiago and for Chilean holiday weekends. Run byTur Bus, Pullman Bus, Buses Paravias, Ciktur.
International buses to Salta and Jujuy over the Paso de Jama
San Pedro de Atacama to Salta and San Salvador de Jujuy, Argentina, over the Paso de Jama at 4,200 m
Buses leave from the San Pedro bus terminal and the border post at Jama is about 160 km east. Tickets are sold at the terminal counters and at the booking offices in town, and Andesmar is the operator currently listed for the Salta run on Chilean ticketing sites; Pullman Bus has also worked the route, and older guidance names Géminis, whose passenger operation no longer appears on sale. Services do not run daily – count on roughly three departures a week – so plan around them rather than turning up. The pass closes in snow: the Province of El Loa shut its border crossings for snow as recently as September 2026. Chile and Argentina both enforce strict food and plant rules at the border; eat or bin fresh produce before the checkpoint.
- When
- About three departures a week per operator; not daily
- Takes
- Roughly 10–12 hours to Salta including the border formalities
- Fare 2026
- Around CLP 30,000
SeasonYear-round but weather-dependent. Snow closes the Paso de Jama at short notice in the southern winter, and the summer altiplanic rains can wash out sections. BookingAt the San Pedro terminal, at a booking office in town, or online; book ahead because departures are few. Run byAndesmar; Pullman Bus and Géminis named in older sources.
Hired, booked and on demand
Three-day 4x4 crossing to Uyuni
San Pedro de Atacama to Uyuni, Bolivia, via the Hito Cajón border, Laguna Verde, Laguna Colorada and the Salar de Uyuni
Almost every one of the booking offices in San Pedro sells the same three-day, two-night Land Cruiser crossing, and in practice they pool passengers, so who you book with matters less than what is written down. Get a printed itinerary listing the sights in order, the meals, and whether the beds are shared. You will be six to a vehicle whatever the leaflet says. Departures leave around 06:30. Prices are 30–40 per cent higher from the Chilean side than the same trip run in reverse from Uyuni, but there are far fewer vehicles at each stop. Extras are not included: Bolivian park and museum fees, showers and WiFi at the refuges. Change about Bs. 250 at one of the exchange offices in San Pedro before you leave.
- When
- Daily departures at about 06:30 in season; some days are cancelled or merged in low season
- Takes
- 3 days, 2 nights; an extra US$20 or so buys a return to San Pedro on the fourth day
- Fare 2024
- CLP 180,000–220,000, roughly US$180–200, plus about Bs. 250 in Bolivian fees
SeasonYear-round. Heavy altiplanic rain in January and February can flood the salar and reroute the itinerary; nights at altitude are far below freezing from May to August. BookingIn person at a booking office in San Pedro, usually a day or two ahead; pay cash for the best price. Run bythe San Pedro booking offices, with Bolivian Land Cruiser operators on the far side.
Night and pre-dawn tour transport
San Pedro to the El Tatio geysers at 4,200 m before dawn, and out of town after dark for the astronomy tour
Two of San Pedro's signature trips run in the dark and both are sold as transport plus guide from the booking offices in the centre. El Tatio agencies collect from your hotel at about 04:00 to 04:30 so you reach the geyser field before first light; it is bitterly cold, commonly -15 °C from June to August. Agencies claim to carry oxygen; what they carry is a can of compressed air, so treat the altitude seriously rather than relying on it. The astronomy tour runs in two slots, roughly 21:00 to 23:30 and 23:00 to 01:30, and is cancelled around the full moon. Both drive the same roads private cars use, so a hire car with an early alarm is a real alternative – the convoy leaves Guatín around 05:30.
- When
- Daily in season; the astronomy tour does not run near a full moon or under cloud
- Takes
- El Tatio about 04:30 to 12:00 or 13:00; astronomy tour 2 to 2.5 hours
- Fare 2024
- El Tatio CLP 18,000–30,000 plus about CLP 10,000–15,000 entrance; astronomy tour CLP 18,000–25,000
SeasonYear-round. Winter nights at El Tatio are around -15 °C; snow can close the road. BookingIn person the day before at a booking office; haggle and pay cash. Run bythe booking offices in central San Pedro.
On foot, by bike, or otherwise
Bicycle hire
San Pedro town out to Valle de la Luna (8 km), Valle de Marte, Pukará de Quitor, Aldea de Tulor and Laguna Cejar
Bike hire is the standard local transport and the cheapest way to see the near sights without a tour. Shops all over the centre rent by the half day or the day, and the rate usually includes a helmet, a hi-vis vest, a lamp, a pump and a basic first aid kit. Check the bike has a rear reflector and take the lamp even for a day ride – the caves at Valle de la Luna are pitch dark. Ride early: the road to Valle de la Luna is steep and sinuous, and afternoon heat is punishing year-round. Carry far more water than feels necessary. One local rule catches visitors out – it is against the rules to cycle in the centre of San Pedro, and the police do ticket cyclists in the evening.
- When
- Shops open through the day; pick the bike up the night before for an early start
- Takes
- Valle de la Luna is 8 km each way, a morning with time at the sights
- Fare 2026
- About CLP 3,000 for 6 hours and CLP 6,000 for a full day, though up to CLP 6,000 for 6 hours and CLP 10,000 a day is also quoted
SeasonYear-round; avoid the middle of the day between November and March. BookingWalk in. Run byindependent rental shops in the town centre.
Rules, permits and closures
Valle de la Luna access rules
San Pedro de Atacama west into the Cordillera de la Sal, inside the Reserva Nacional Los Flamencos
Valle de la Luna is part of the CONAF-run Reserva Nacional Los Flamencos, but each sector of the reserve is run by the Atacameño-Lickanantay community that holds it, and tickets are sold by that community, not by CONAF at a gate. For Valle de la Luna you must buy online at ValledelaLuna.com at least one day in advance; there is no ticket booth at the entrance and you will be turned away without one. You can cycle in, but only in a narrow window: cyclists are admitted 08:00–11:00 from April to September and 09:00–11:00 from September to March, against general opening of 08:00–16:00 and 09:00–17:00. The practical consequence is that cyclists get the morning and tours get the sunset. People who ride out early sometimes hand their ticket on to someone going up for the evening.
- When
- Open daily; cyclists only in the morning window
- Takes
- 8 km from town; a tour runs about 16:00 to 20:30
- Fare 2024
- Entrance CLP 10,800, not included in tour prices. Laguna Chaxa in the same reserve was CLP 13,714 for a foreign adult and CLP 10,285 for a Chilean adult.
SeasonAutumn–winter hours April to September, spring–summer hours September to March; hours change for weather or safety. BookingOnline at least a day ahead at valledelaluna.com; Laguna Chaxa at ckapintickets.com; Aldea de Túlor is in-person only; Lagunas Miscanti and Miñiques through socairechile.cl with check-in at Socaire. Run byCONAF, co-administered with Atacameño-Lickanantay communities; Valle de la Luna sold by the Comunidad Atacameña de San Pedro.
What we could not find out
8 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
Correction to the brief: the Calama airport shuttle no longer costs 10,000–12,000 pesos. Wikivoyage's current text, last edited on 4 September 2026, gives around 20,000 pesos for a Transvip or Altiplanico shared minivan and names Altiplanico rather than Licancabur. Transvip's own site confirms it runs Calama–San Pedro transfers but publishes no price, so the 20,000 figure is second-hand.
- 02
Correction to the brief: Calama's bus terminal moved. The Avenida Granaderos terminal closed on 11 April 2026 and services went to a new terminal at the southern exit of the city. The cheap regional operators for San Pedro historically sold from offices on Calle Antofagasta near Balmaceda; reporting says Balmaceda and Granaderos services both moved, but it was not confirmed whether Frontera del Norte and Atacama 2000 now sell only at the new terminal. Check on arrival before walking into the old centre.
- 03
Correction to the brief: Géminis appears no longer to run the Argentina passenger service. geminis.cl now presents only mining personnel, cargo and fuel transport, and Chilean ticketing sites list only Andesmar for San Pedro to Salta. Treat the Géminis and Pullman naming as historical.
- 04
No current published timetable was found for the Argentina buses over the Paso de Jama. The three-a-week figure and the 30,000-peso fare come from Wikivoyage, not from an operator. Andesmar's own site does not list Atacama destinations.
- 05
Live fares and departure times for Calama–San Pedro could not be read: recorrido.cl loads its search results after the page, turbus.cl's sitemap carries no route pages, and the small regional operators' own domains (atacama2000.cl, busesfronteradelnorte.cl, ciktur.cl) did not resolve. The 3,000–5,000 peso band and the posted terminal timetable are from Wikivoyage, and the terminal timetable was recorded in April 2022.
- 06
Bicycle hire prices are given inconsistently by the same source – 3,000 pesos for 6 hours and 6,000 for a day in one section, 6,000 for 6 hours and 10,000 for a day in another. Both are listed above; expect the higher pair in high season.
- 07
The Valle de la Luna entrance fee of 10,800 pesos is a 2024 figure from Wikivoyage. valledelaluna.com sits behind a bot challenge and could not be read, so the current price and the exact advance-booking cut-off are unconfirmed. The cyclist hours and the one-day-ahead rule are confirmed by CONAF's own pass site.
- 08
El Tatio and astronomy tour prices are from Wikivoyage's tour table, whose peso column is dated March 2018 with a 2024 update only for the Valle de la Luna entrance. Treat them as indicative and expect current prices to be higher.
