Huacachina
Huacachina is a one-street oasis about 5 km from Ica and there is no municipal bus into it – you arrive on a Lima–Ica coach and finish the last 5 km by taxi or mototaxi, or you take the Peru Hop / Bus Hop backpacker bus, which is the only service that drives into the oasis itself. The dune buggies that are the only way out into the sand have been stopped since mid-September 2026 by a prosecutor's crackdown and an open-ended drivers' strike.

Huacachina is a village built in a small oasis about five kilometers from the city of Ica in southwestern Peru. The oasis was introduced as a feature on the back of the 50 nuevo sol note in 1991. Huacachina has a permanent population of around 100 people, although it hosts many tourists each year.

8 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed eight ways of moving to, from or around Huacachina: four hired or on demand, three by road and one under your own steam, from 29 sources. One of them runs only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. One needs a phone call or a message before you turn up.
The fares were seen in 2023 to 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. We rate 4 of the 8 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 22 September 2026, and ends with seven things we could not confirm.
Hired, booked and on demand
Ica to Huacachina taxi
Ica city centre or Ica bus terminals to the Huacachina promenade, about 5 km
There is no public bus of any kind into the oasis, so every traveller arriving on a normal coach finishes the trip by road taxi. Taxis wait outside the bus terminals on Av. Municipalidad and around the Plaza de Armas in Ica, and they are easy to find during the day. Take a registered car: it should carry an official rooftop sign and the driver's documents on the dashboard. Agree the fare before you get in – there is no meter. Coming back out, taxis stand at the entrance to the Huacachina promenade at any hour.
- When
- On demand, all day and all night; the road is short, paved and busy with tourist traffic
- Takes
- About 6–10 minutes for 5.5 km
- Fare 2026
- About S/10 one way by day and S/12–14 at night
SeasonYear-round. BookingNone – flag one down or ask your hotel to call one. Run byindependent licensed taxi drivers in Ica.
Ica mototaxi
Point to point inside Ica city – terminals, market, Plaza de Armas, the road out to the oasis
Three-wheeled mototaxis swarm the streets around Ica's bus terminals and the Mercado Modelo; you wave one down, say where you are going and pay the driver. They are the cheap way to move around Ica itself – between a bus terminal and a hotel, or out to the wineries – and are noticeably cheaper than a car taxi for the same hop. Drivers will also run the oasis road, but a car taxi is the normal choice for that leg because of the luggage and the dune-road dust.
- When
- Constant during daylight; thins out late at night
- Takes
- A few minutes for a hop inside Ica
- Fare 2026
- About S/1.50 for a typical trip across Ica; car taxis charge about S/2.50–3 for the same hop
SeasonYear-round. BookingNone, pay the driver. Run byindependent mototaxi drivers.
Peru Hop / Bus Hop hop-on bus
Lima – Paracas – Huacachina – Nazca – Arequipa (and on to Puno, Cusco and La Paz)
This is the bus most backpackers actually take, and the difference from a normal coach matters: it drives into Huacachina itself rather than dropping you in Ica, so there is no taxi leg and no terminal. Staff collect you from your hotel or Airbnb in Lima, an English-speaking Peruvian host rides along, and the ticket is a pass rather than a seat on one bus – you hop off, stay as long as you like, then book the next leg in the app. The company rebranded from peruhop.com to bushop.com, and the old domain now redirects there.
- When
- Departures every day on the Lima–Arequipa corridor; bus times can be changed in the app up to 12 hours before departure
- Takes
- Lima to Paracas about 4 hours, Paracas to Huacachina about 1 hour; the whole Lima to Arequipa run can be done in 3 days
- Fare 2026
- Lima to the Canyon pass (6 stops including Paracas, Huacachina, Nazca and Arequipa) from US$169
SeasonYear-round. BookingOnline in advance; the pass is valid for one year and each leg is reserved in the app. Run byPeru Hop, trading as Bus Hop.
Dune buggy and sandboard tour (tubulares) – suspended
Huacachina promenade out into the Ica dunes and back
The stripped-down buggies known as tubulares are normally the only way to get out beyond the first ridge of dunes, and every hostel and street kiosk in the oasis sells the same two-hour run of dune driving plus a set of sandboard slopes. As of 22 September 2026 they are not running. A prosecutor's operation on 11 September took roughly 300 vehicles out of service on the grounds that they are home-built and have no MTC type approval, and the drivers answered with an indefinite strike from 15 September that was still in force on 20 September. Quad bikes kept operating during the stoppage. Before booking anything, ask in the oasis whether the tubulares have returned, and ask to see the operator's SOAT insurance and circulation permit.
- When
- Normally several departures a day, with the late-afternoon run at about 16:00 or 16:30 for the sunset light; none at the time of writing
- Takes
- About 2 hours including the sandboarding
- Fare 2026
- Historically about S/50 booked through a hostel and as low as S/25 haggled on the street; Bus Hop's own tour is US$20
SeasonYear-round when running; suspended since mid-September 2026. BookingNormally same day at any hostel or kiosk; Bus Hop's tour meets at the Wild Rover hostel and is booked in advance. Run byseveral dozen small Huacachina agencies and owner-drivers.
By road
Lima – Ica coaches (Cruz del Sur, Oltursa, Civa, Soyuz)
Lima to Ica, 303 km down the Panamericana Sur; Huacachina is 5 km further by taxi
Cruz del Sur runs the route from its own Terminal Javier Prado at Av. Javier Prado Este 1109, La Victoria, Lima, and arrives at Terminal Ica, Av. Municipalidad 132, open 08:00–20:00. Oltursa, Civa and Soyuz each use their own separate Lima terminals – Peru has no single central bus station – so check which terminal your ticket names before you set out. In Ica the terminals sit within a few blocks of each other, and taxis to the oasis wait outside. Cruz del Sur sells online up to one hour before departure.
- When
- Cruz del Sur alone runs 60–61 departures a day from 02:00 to 23:30; Ica back to Lima is 43–45 a day
- Takes
- 3h 40m to 6h 05m depending on service and traffic
- Fare 2026
- Cruz del Sur from S/55 one way (Evolution, Suite and Ica Express); Soyuz VIP was about S/32
SeasonYear-round; the coastal fog season from June to September slows the road but does not close it. BookingOnline or at the terminal; weekends and Peruvian public holidays sell out. Run byCruz del Sur, Oltursa, Civa, Soyuz.
Onward coaches to Paracas, Nazca and Arequipa
Ica to Paracas (about 75 km north), Ica to Nazca (about 140 km south), Ica to Arequipa (overnight down the coast)
Southbound and northbound coaches all leave from the Ica terminals, not from the oasis, so budget a taxi back into town unless you are on the Peru Hop bus, which leaves Huacachina direct at 14:00 for Nazca and Arequipa. For Paracas, Cruz del Sur and Oltursa both stop near the town; cheaper companies only reach Pisco, from where you take a taxi. Minibuses between Ica and Paracas are cheaper still and run hotel to hotel. For Arequipa the choice is Cruz del Sur or the cheaper Cial.
- When
- Cruz del Sur runs 17 departures a day Lima–Paracas and 26 a day Lima–Nasca, most of which call at or near Ica; Arequipa is 17–18 a day
- Takes
- Ica to Paracas about 1 hour; Ica to Nazca 2–3 hours; Ica to Arequipa is an overnight run of roughly 12 hours
- Fare 2026
- Ica to Nazca was S/13; Cruz del Sur Lima–Paracas from S/60, Lima–Nasca from S/85, Lima–Arequipa from S/142
SeasonYear-round. Since 2022 the Palpa bridge works on the Ica–Nazca road have often added more than an hour. BookingOnline or at the terminal; the Arequipa night buses fill up in high season. Run byCruz del Sur, Oltursa, Cial, Civa, Peru Hop.
Night buses south and back to Lima
Ica to Lima and Ica or Nazca to Arequipa, travelled overnight
Long-distance travel on this coast is built around night departures: you sleep through the desert and arrive at dawn. Cruz del Sur's Ica–Lima services run until late in the night and its Lima departures start again at 02:00. On the Peru Hop pass the standard southbound leg leaves Huacachina at 14:00, reaches Nazca at 17:30 and leaves again at 18:00 to arrive in Arequipa at 05:30. Book a seat on the lower deck if you want to sleep; the front upper-deck seats are the ones with the view, not the quiet. Taxis run out of Huacachina at any hour to meet a night departure.
- When
- Nightly in both directions; Cruz del Sur Lima–Ica runs to 23:30 and restarts at 02:00
- Takes
- Ica to Lima about 4–5 hours; Nazca to Arequipa about 11h 30m overnight
- Fare 2026
- Cruz del Sur Ica–Lima from S/55; the Nazca–Arequipa leg is included in the Peru Hop pass
SeasonYear-round. BookingBook the same day for Lima, a day or two ahead for Arequipa in high season. Run byCruz del Sur, Oltursa, Civa, Cial, Peru Hop.
On foot, by bike, or otherwise
Walking up the dunes and around the lagoon
From the Huacachina promenade straight up the sand ridge behind the village
The village is a few minutes' walk end to end, so nothing inside it needs transport. The dunes start at the back of the buildings and there are no marked paths – you pick a ridge and climb. Allow up to an hour depending on which dune you choose and how fit you are. Sunset from the rim is the reason most people do it; sunrise works too but the unmarked slope is harder to judge in the dark. Carry water and something to cover your eyes and camera against blown sand. A visitor fee is charged at the lagoon and for going up the dunes.
- When
- Any time; the climb is best in the last hour of light
- Takes
- Up to an hour up, much quicker down
- Fare 2023
- Visitor fee S/3.60 per daySeen in 2023: a floor, not a price.
SeasonYear-round; midday heat in December to March makes the climb unpleasant. Run bycollected locally at the lagoon; the Ica regional government set the charge under Regional Ordinance 004-2026-GORE-ICA.
What we could not find out
7 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
Correction to the brief: the dune buggy tours are not currently running. Roughly 300 tubulares were taken out of service on 11 September 2026 and the drivers began an indefinite strike on 15 September that was still reported as continuing on 20 September 2026. Anyone planning a Huacachina stop should be told the buggies may be unavailable and the situation should be re-checked before the file is used.
- 02
The mototaxi fare specifically from an Ica bus terminal to Huacachina could not be confirmed. Wikivoyage gives S/1.50 for a mototaxi hop inside Ica and S/10 for a car taxi to the oasis, but no source found gives a mototaxi price for the oasis run itself. Ask at the terminal rank, or on the Peru Hop / hostel WhatsApp groups.
- 03
Wikivoyage's S/10 daytime and S/12–14 night taxi fare is not dated in the article text. It was read live in September 2026 but the sentence may be several years older. Peruvian fares rose across Ica in March 2026 during a fuel shortage, so treat it as a floor.
- 04
The Huacachina visitor fee may have gone up. A February 2026 Diario La Opinión headline said the charge to visit would rise by more than 100 per cent, and Regional Ordinance 004-2026-GORE-ICA published in August 2026 re-justified an entry charge, but no source found gives the current amount. The S/3.60 figure is from November 2023.
- 05
Oltursa's and Civa's own Lima–Ica timetables and fares could not be read – oltursa.pe returns 403 and civa.com.pe hides its fares behind a booking widget. Only their presence on the route is confirmed. Soyuz's site soyuz.com.pe did not resolve at all.
- 06
Which exact Ica terminal each operator uses is only confirmed for Cruz del Sur (Terminal Ica, Av. Municipalidad 132). The others are known to have separate terminals in the same part of town but the addresses were not confirmed.
- 07
No source was found for a scheduled shuttle or colectivo between Ica's terminals and Huacachina, which is consistent with Wikivoyage's statement that no municipal bus route exists.
What the planner can route today
The options above live on the place page, not in the departure board: a boat that comes when you phone has no time to show. What the board can do for Huacachina is this.
