Capurganá and Sapzurro

No road reaches Capurganá or Sapzurro at all, and none reaches the rest of the Darién coast either, so everyone arrives by open fast boat or by light aircraft. The working chain is a night or early-morning bus from Medellín or Montería to the beach town of Necoclí, then a lancha across the Gulf of Urabá that leaves in the morning and weighs your bags; the older route from Turbo still runs and takes longer. The alternative is Satena's weekday flight from Medellín to Acandí and a 40-minute boat up the coast. Between the villages it is small boats or the jungle path over the hill, and inside Capurganá, which has no cars, it is feet, horses and a handful of tuk-tuks at the dock.

The place

Capurganá is a town of the municipality of Acandí on the northwestern coast of the Gulf of Urabá in the Colombian department of Chocó, adjacent to the border between Colombia and Panama. Previously a base site for eco-tourists, since 2010 the town's main source of income has been migrants preparing to hike into Panama, across the Darién Gap. In 2019 it was described as a "smugglers' town".

How transport works here

8 ways of moving, each with its rule

We confirmed eight ways of moving to, from or around Capurganá: four by water, one by road, one by air, one under your own steam and one hired or on demand, from 28 sources. One needs a phone call or a message before you turn up.

The fares were seen in 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. Five fares carry no year, because they could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 5 of the 8 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 22 September 2026, and ends with eight things we could not confirm.

Necoclí – Capurganá lancha

Necoclí muelle turístico, on the beach at the centre of town, to the Capurganá dock

Necoclí is the gateway that has displaced Turbo. Buy at the ticket offices on the pier the evening before or from about 06:00 on the day; boats go in the morning and the sea in the Gulf of Urabá gets worse as the day goes on, so there is effectively one useful departure window. Bags are weighed at the dock. Wikivoyage's account of the route says 10 kg is included and every extra kilo is charged; the Turbo boats charge the same way. Buy a large plastic bin liner at the dock for your pack – the boat is open, it slams over the swell and passengers get wet. Seats at the back are the least punishing. The same office sells the return, and it is worth reserving it the day before you leave Capurganá.

When
Daily in the morning. Bookaway lists a single scheduled departure at 08:00 on the route in September 2026 and describes departures as limited; local sources say lanchas leave every day in the morning
Takes
1h 22m on Bookaway's 2026 listing; Spanish Wikipedia says about 1 hour 15 minutes for the 66 km crossing
Fare 2026
US$32–33 per seat booked online in September 2026. Luggage over 10 kg is charged by the kilo at the dock; Wikivoyage's figure for the Necoclí boat is COP$1,000 per extra kilo, undated

SeasonYear-round, but January to March brings heavy swell that makes the crossing rough and, in the Spanish Wikipedia's words, unsuitable for travellers not used to the sea. Wikivoyage puts the rough spell at December to February. BookingAt the pier office in Necoclí a day ahead, or online through resellers. Cash is worth carrying: there are no ATMs in Capurganá or Sapzurro. Run byEcoviajes Darien is the operator named on the online listing; other lancha cooperatives sell from the same pier.

speedboat

Turbo – Capurganá lancha

El Waffe dock in Turbo, over the bridge from the main plaza, to Capurganá

The older and rougher of the two crossings, and still the one some Colombians use because Turbo is on the highway. Tickets go on sale at about 06:00 and boats leave through the morning until close to midday, so buy the day before and get your name called early in the loading queue. Everything is weighed. The ride is around three hours of hard slamming; sit at the back on the port side and have rain gear out. If you miss the Capurganá boat there is a later one to Acandí, and a second short boat on from Acandí to Capurganá in the afternoon.

When
Daily. Tickets from about 06:00, departures through the morning until just before midday. Bookaway lists a single 08:00 departure in the Capurganá to Turbo direction in September 2026
Takes
2h 30m to 3h 25m on the 2026 listing; about 2 hours on Spanish Wikipedia, 2½ to 3 hours in older traveller accounts, for 91 km
Fare 2026
US$30–33 per seat booked online, 2026. Wikivoyage's on-the-dock figures are COP$75,000 from Turbo with COP$1,000 per kilo over 10 kg, recorded July 2019, and COP$55,000 in the Capurganá to Turbo direction

SeasonYear-round; same December to March swell problem as the Necoclí route. BookingAt the Turbo dock the day before, or online. Run byTipal SAS on the current online listing; Cootransflumar is the long-standing local cooperative named by Wikivoyage.

Capurganá – Sapzurro – Aguacate local boats

Capurganá dock to Sapzurro, to the beach at Aguacate, and on request to La Miel across the Panamanian line

Small boats work the coast from the same Capurganá dock as the long-distance lanchas. Most of the Sapzurro departures go around midday, with some as late as 17:00, but do not plan on the late ones. Going the other way, the Sapzurro boat that gets you to Capurganá in time for the morning lancha out leaves at about 06:30. Aguacate is ten minutes by boat. Boats can also be hired to La Miel, the Panamanian beach beyond Sapzurro. Passengers pay a small dock tax at Capurganá.

When
Daily, several a day; the bulk around midday, plus an early 06:30 run from Sapzurro to connect with the Turbo and Necoclí boats
Takes
About 20 minutes Capurganá to Sapzurro; about 10 minutes Capurganá to Aguacate
Fare
Wikivoyage records COP$7,000 to COP$10,000 Capurganá to Sapzurro and COP$20,000 per person round trip for a hired boat to La Miel; both figures are undated and pre-date 2023, so treat them as a floor

SeasonYear-round; rougher and less reliable December to March. BookingNone, pay at the dock. Carry cash: there are no ATMs and no cards in Sapzurro. Run byLocal lancheros working from the Capurganá and Sapzurro docks.

boat

Capurganá – Puerto Obaldía, and onward into Panama

Capurganá dock to Puerto Obaldía in Guna Yala, Panama, with onward boats and flights from there

This is the border crossing proper. Get your Colombian exit stamp in Capurganá first, take the lancha to Puerto Obaldía, and find the immigration office in town for the Panamanian entry stamp – the police at the dock log your passport and search your bag but do not stamp it. Wikivoyage records departures at 07:00 and 13:00 daily, with private hire available, and notes the boat leaves early enough on flight days to connect with the aircraft out of Puerto Obaldía. Onward from Puerto Obaldía you fly to Panama City or take a boat along the Guna Yala coast towards El Porvenir and Cartí; that coastal run is 10 hours or more, very rough, and you and your bags get soaked. You usually need your name on the zarpe, the port clearance, before a boat will carry you. There are no ATMs between Puerto Obaldía and the mainland past Cartí. Sailboats also work the Sapzurro–San Blas route, especially November to April when the trade winds make the Cartagena passage unpleasant.

When
Daily at 07:00 and 13:00 by Wikivoyage's account; in practice boats go when there are passengers and on Panamanian flight days
Takes
About 45 minutes Capurganá to Puerto Obaldía
Fare
Wikivoyage figures, all undated and pre-2023: COP$25,000 Capurganá to Puerto Obaldía, COP$100,000 to hire a private boat, US$15 in the reverse direction, and COP$30,000 from Sapzurro. Sailboat trips to San Blas with three days in the islands and meals were quoted at US$300–350

SeasonYear-round; rough December to March, and the Guna Yala coastal run is worst after El Porvenir. BookingAt the Capurganá seafront office, ideally the day before. Run byLocal lancheros; ask at the Capurganá seafront ticket office, or for Marcelino if it is shut.

Medellín and Montería buses to Necoclí

Medellín Terminal del Norte to Necoclí, and Montería bus terminal to Necoclí, both ending a short walk from the pier

This is the leg that decides whether you catch the boat. Transportes Gómez Hernández and Cootransuroccidente run Medellín–Necoclí all day and overnight, with the earliest listed departure at 04:00 and the last at 23:30, so the standard trick is an overnight that lands you in Necoclí in time for the morning lancha. Sotracor runs Montería–Necoclí, a much shorter hop useful if you are coming from Cartagena or the Caribbean coast. The road from Medellín is long, mountainous and prone to landslides. In Necoclí the bus stop and the pier are both in the small town centre.

When
Medellín–Necoclí: departures throughout the day, earliest 04:00, latest 23:30. Montería–Necoclí: only a couple a day, listed at 11:40 and 12:40
Takes
Medellín–Necoclí 7h 45m to 8h 16m for 277 km. Montería–Necoclí about 3 hours for 106 km
Fare 2026
Medellín–Necoclí US$31–39; Montería–Necoclí US$18–19, both seen on online listings in September 2026

SeasonYear-round; the Medellín road can close for landslides in the wet months. BookingAt the terminal counters, or online. Book the overnight in advance in Colombian holiday weeks. Run byTransportes Gómez Hernández, Cootransuroccidente (Medellín); Sotracor (Montería).

scheduled flight

Satena flight to Acandí, then a boat up the coast

Medellín Olaya Herrera airport (EOH) to Acandí Alcides Fernández airport (ACD), then lancha Acandí to Capurganá

Capurganá's own airstrip has had no scheduled airline since ADA collapsed in 2019, so the air route now runs through Acandí. Satena added Medellín–Acandí in April 2024 using 19-seat aircraft and its own site lists the flight as operating Monday to Friday. Olaya Herrera is the in-city airport in Medellín, not Rionegro, so if you are connecting from Bogotá or Cali make sure your inbound lands at EOH or allow an hour for the road transfer from Rionegro. At Acandí, take the lancha along the coast to Capurganá; Spanish Wikipedia puts that leg at about 40 minutes. Baggage on a 19-seater is tight.

When
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, per Satena's own Acandí page in September 2026
Takes
About 1 hour Medellín to the Chocó Caribbean coast, plus about 40 minutes by boat from Acandí to Capurganá
Fare
Not confirmed; Satena publishes fares only through its booking engine

SeasonYear-round. Chocó airstrips are unpaved or marginal and Satena has suspended other Chocó routes over runway condition, so treat the flight as cancellable. BookingSatena online or on +57 601 918 6030. The Acandí boat is bought at the Acandí pier. Run bySatena (flight); Tipal SAS and local lancheros on the Acandí–Capurganá hop.

walking trail

The hill path to Sapzurro and over the border to La Miel

Capurganá over the ridge to Sapzurro, then up the stepped path across the Colombia–Panama border to La Miel

The path starts at the edge of Capurganá and climbs through jungle to a viewpoint that looks down on both bays; a small fee is collected near the high point, where snacks and drinks are sold. Estimates of the walk run from 1½ hours in older accounts to a little over two hours on the Colombian tourism board's page. From Sapzurro, a separate stepped climb of about 45 minutes crosses into La Miel in Panama. That second crossing is an informal one for a beach day, not an immigration route: if you are actually leaving Colombia you get stamped out in Capurganá and stamped in at Puerto Obaldía. Do not attempt to continue on foot from La Miel towards Puerto Obaldía.

When
Any time in daylight
Takes
1h 30m to 2h 15m Capurganá to Sapzurro; about 45 minutes Sapzurro to La Miel
Fare
A nominal fee is collected on the Capurganá–Sapzurro trail; the amount is not published

SeasonYear-round, but the path is slick and the streams rise fast in heavy rain. A woman drowned crossing the Capurganá river during a flood in July 2025. Bookingnone; a local guide can be hired at either end. Run bynone.

horse cart

Horses, carts and dock tuk-tuks in a village with no cars

Within Capurganá village, between the dock, the main street and outlying cabañas; Sapzurro has no roads at all

There is no road into Capurganá, so there are no cars in it. Land transport is horses and bicycles, and a few tuk-tuks wait near the dock, used mostly for shifting heavy loads rather than people. Guesthouses outside the village send a horse or a horse and cart to meet arrivals at the dock – the Wikivoyage listing for one cabaña ten minutes out of town says the owner collects guests from the dock with his horse and cart. You can walk from one edge of Capurganá to the other in about five minutes. Sapzurro has no roads either and takes ten minutes to cross on foot.

Not confirmed

What we could not find out

8 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.

  1. 01

Correction to the brief: nothing found supports the specific claim that afternoon seas stop the boats on a daily basis. What the sources do support is that departures are morning-only by schedule (tickets from 06:00 in Turbo, boats until just before midday; daily morning lanchas from Necoclí) and that the rough season is December to March, when Spanish Wikipedia says the swell makes navigation difficult and Wikivoyage says the sea is rough between December and February. A local operator should be asked whether afternoon wind is the reason for the morning-only pattern.

  2. 02

Correction to the brief: Satena does not fly to Capurganá. Its 2026 national destination list includes Acandí but not Capurganá, and Capurganá has had no scheduled airline since ADA went under in 2019. Reaching Capurganá by air means Medellín–Acandí plus a boat, or a charter.

  3. 03

No Colombian-peso fare from 2023 or later was found for any of the boats. The US dollar prices come from an online reseller; the peso figures in the file are Wikivoyage's and are undated or from July 2019. Prices should be re-checked at the Necoclí and Turbo pier ticket offices.

  4. 04

The 10 kg luggage allowance and the per-kilo excess are consistently described across Wikivoyage's Capurganá, Turbo and Sapzurro articles but none of those passages carries a recent date, and the per-kilo rate is quoted variously as COP$500, COP$1,000 per kg and COP$1,000 per 2 kg. Confirm at the dock.

  5. 05

Darién migration since 2023: crossings peaked at about 520,000 in 2023 and fell to about 300,000 in 2024 per Wikipedia, and by late 2025 the Defensoría del Pueblo was monitoring reverse flow from Panama back into Colombia through the Sapzurro–La Miel crossing and Puerto Obaldía. Spanish-language headlines seen through Google News in 2025 and 2026 describe the drop hitting the Clan del Golfo's earnings and Colombian prosecutors seizing 25 lanchas from a migrant-smuggling network in Urabá. None of those articles could be opened directly this session, so the current effect on tourist boat capacity and pricing is unconfirmed.

  6. 06

In April 2024 Migración Colombia and other agencies were studying a paved path from Acandí towards the Panamanian border and separate migrant-only docks at Turbo and Necoclí. Whether either was built is unknown and would change the dock experience for travellers.

  7. 07

No source was found for a fixed Sapzurro–La Miel boat service or its fare, for the Aguacate boat fare, or for the fee collected on the Capurganá–Sapzurro trail.

  8. 08

Sargassum has washed onto Capurganá's beaches in large quantities in both 2025 and 2026, reported around March–April. It does not stop the boats but it affects what you find on arrival.
