Flores
Flores is an island the size of a few blocks, joined to the mainland by a single causeway. Everything that makes it work sits on the other side: Santa Elena has the market, the banks, the old bus terminal and the new bus terminal, and San Benito behind it has the cheap housing. The island itself has no buses and barely any cars. You walk it in fifteen minutes, and the only vehicle that matters is the tuk-tuk, a flat Q10 to Q15 anywhere across the three towns. Mundo Maya airport (FRS) is a couple of kilometres east of the causeway on the Santa Elena side, with flights only from Guatemala City, and shuttles to Tikal and taxis meet the flights. Almost all long-distance movement is one of two things: a tourist shuttle minibus that picks up at the island entrance by the I Love Petén letters, or a coach out of the Santa Elena bus terminals. Tikal is 60 to 63 km north, about an hour by road, and the shuttle minibuses run to fixed morning departures with fixed return times. Belize is east through Melchor de Mencos, and the shuttle companies sell all the way through to San Ignacio, Belize City, the Caye Caulker water taxi, and on to Bacalar in Mexico. Cobán and Lanquín are south on a road that changes microbuses at Sayaxché, where a small ferry or a boatman gets you across the river. Mexico by river is west, from Bethel or La Técnica across the Usumacinta to Frontera Corozal. Lake boats still run but they are now mostly a negotiation with a boatman, because the road around the lake killed the scheduled service.

9 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed nine ways of moving to, from or around Flores: two hired or on demand, five by road and two by water, from 32 sources. One needs a phone call or a message before you turn up.
The fares were seen in 2024 to 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. We rate 3 of the 9 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 22 September 2026, and ends with eight things we could not confirm.
Hired, booked and on demand
Tuk-tuks across Flores island, the causeway, Santa Elena and San Benito
Flores island to the Santa Elena causeway, the new bus terminal, the old market, the airport and San Benito. The causeway is the only road link between island and mainland
Flag one anywhere. They circle the island's ring road and queue at the causeway entrance beside the I Love Petén letters, at the Mercado Viejo in Santa Elena, and outside the new bus terminal. There is no meter and no stand system; you say where you want to go and pay on arrival. Walking is genuinely the alternative for short hops: circling the whole island takes about fifteen minutes and the causeway walk to Santa Elena is about ten minutes on a proper sidewalk
- When
- Constant during the day, thinning out late at night
- Takes
- 2 to 5 minutes anywhere on the island, about 10 minutes from the island to the new bus terminal 1.5 km south of the causeway
- Fare 2026
- Q10–15 per person within Flores, Santa Elena and San Benito. Q15 per person from the new bus terminal to the island. Expect more with heavy luggage, with two people squeezed in, and at night
SeasonYear-round. The causeway itself is the weak point: part of the fill bridge carrying the road onto the island collapsed in June 2026 after a storm and access was restricted while it was repaired, so check the state of the crossing before assuming a vehicle can reach the island. Bookingnone, pay the driver. Run byindependent owner-drivers.
Mundo Maya International Airport (FRS) transfer
Mundo Maya International Airport, on the east side of Santa Elena, to the Flores causeway and the island
Taxis and Tikal shuttles wait for every arriving flight outside the terminal. This is the only international-standard airport in Guatemala outside the capital, but in practice it is a domestic airport: TAG and Avianca fly from Guatemala City, TAG daily and Avianca a few times a week, and both are prone to delays in each direction. If you are going straight to Tikal you do not need to go into Flores at all, because the shuttle minibuses meet the flights
- When
- Taxis meet every flight; flights from Guatemala City run daily on TAG and roughly three times a week on Avianca
- Takes
- About 10 minutes to the causeway, roughly 2 km by road from the airport to the causeway
- Fare 2026
- Q20 for the taxi, or Q10 per person, whichever is higher. A taxi on to El Remate is about US$20
SeasonYear-round. Road blockades in Petén have shut off access to the airport, as in August 2026, so allow margin on departure days. Bookingnone needed on arrival; agree the price before getting in. Run byairport taxis, plus shuttle operators meeting flights.
By road
Tikal shuttle minibuses from Flores island
Flores island and Santa Elena hotels to Tikal National Park, 60 to 63 km north on the paved CA-13 and the Ixlú turn-off, passing El Remate
Every hostel and agency on the island sells a seat, and the minibuses collect at the entrance to the island by the I Love Petén letters at the causeway end, or from hotels. Buy the day before. The fixed morning departures from Flores are commonly 03:00, 04:30, 06:00, 08:00, 10:00 and 12:00, with returns at 11:00, 12:30, 13:00, 15:00, 16:00 and 18:45; one operator sells three pairings, 06:00 returning 13:00, 07:45 returning 15:00, and 10:00 returning 16:00. The return time is fixed when you buy, so pick it against how long you want in the park. The park entrance ticket is never included
- When
- Roughly every 1 to 2 hours from 03:00 or 04:00 to midday, returning through the afternoon until about 18:45
- Takes
- 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes each way
- Fare 2026
- Q80 return without a guide, Q100 return with a guide, sold by agencies in Flores. One operator lists US$15 one way and US$20 return. Park entry is separate: Q150 for foreigners for a normal day ticket, plus Q100 for the 04:00 sunrise entry, Q100 for the sunset entry and Q30 for the museum
SeasonYear-round on a fully paved road. In the northern summer rainy season it can rain all afternoon or all day at the site and the trails go muddy, but the road holds. Bookingbook the shuttle the day before through your hotel or an agency; buy the Tikal ticket online in advance at the Ministry of Culture site, because there are no ticket sales at the ruins entrance, no ATM in the park and almost no phone signal. Run byagency minibuses, historically dominated by San Juan Travel; several operators now sell the same departures.
Public buses and microbuses, Santa Elena to Tikal, El Remate and Uaxactún
Santa Elena new bus terminal, and the old terminal inside the Mercado Viejo, north to El Remate, Tikal and on to Uaxactún
Second-class buses to Tikal go from the new bus terminal in southern Santa Elena, 1.5 km south of the causeway. Small buses and microbuses from the villages of the region use the Old Terminal hidden inside Santa Elena's Mercado Viejo, much closer to the island. Ask for the Tikal or Uaxactún bus by name; all the minibuses to Tikal stop at El Remate, but some larger buses only stop at a junction 7 km short of El Remate, so ask before boarding. The Uaxactún bus passes the Tikal entrance once a day, leaving the old station in the early afternoon. Some local buses do not run on Sundays. Be careful buying return tickets from resellers at the bus station: travellers have been sold returns on buses that do not exist
- When
- Scheduled Tikal departures have run at 06:00, 06:30, 07:00, 08:30, 10:00, 11:30 and 12:30; El Remate minibuses semi-frequently through the day; Uaxactún once or twice a day
- Takes
- About 2 hours to Tikal on the stopping buses; El Remate roughly 45 minutes
- Fare 2026
- Q50 each way Santa Elena to Tikal. El Remate about Q20 by minibus, around US$1 on a Tikal minibus, or about US$0.30 on a large bus to the junction
SeasonYear-round, paved road. Bookingnone, pay on board or at the terminal window. Run bylocal second-class bus lines and microbus owners.
Guatemala City night coaches and Antigua packages
Santa Elena's new bus terminal, Zona 2, to Guatemala City, 8 to 10 hours south on the CA-13 and the Atlantic highway; Antigua as a bus-plus-shuttle package
The long-distance companies all use the new bus terminal 1.5 km south of the causeway, and most will also pick up at the Flores end. Fuente del Norte, Autobuses del Norte (ADN) and Línea Dorada run the route between them, with first-class and economy classes on the same line and several departures morning and evening. Buy from the company's own counter, not from touts: the standard complaint is being sold a first-class ticket and put in the back row of an economy bus. Overnight departures from Flores have run at 21:00, 21:30 and 22:00. From Antigua, agencies sell two products: a direct daytime shuttle, and an overnight bus to Guatemala City with a shuttle connection on to Antigua, which is faster because it runs through the night traffic
- When
- Several departures daily in each direction, concentrated in the morning and the late evening
- Takes
- 8 to 10 hours to Guatemala City; 10 to 12 hours through to Antigua
- Fare 2026
- Q200–250 the going rate for the Guatemala City run. Antigua packages around Q300 for the direct daytime shuttle and around Q350 for the night bus plus shuttle. One operator sells Santa Elena to Antigua as bus plus private car from US$85
SeasonYear-round. Bookingbuy at the company office in the terminal, or online for Fuente del Norte; book ahead for the overnight first-class services. Run byTransportes Fuente del Norte, Autobuses del Norte (ADN), Línea Dorada.
Belize shuttles to San Ignacio, Belize City, Caye Caulker and Bacalar
Flores island to Melchor de Mencos, across the Guatemala–Belize border, then San Ignacio, Belmopan and Belize City, with onward connections to the Caye Caulker water taxi and to Chetumal and Bacalar in Mexico
The shuttle minibuses pick up in front of the I Love Petén letters at the entrance to the island, usually at 06:00. They are Toyota Hiace vans and the long runs involve changes: to Bacalar you change in Belize City, where the island passengers peel off for the water taxi, and again at the Mexican border. Buy from a named agency, because bogus Belize tickets are a known problem in Flores. There are also morning coaches from the Santa Elena bus station, ADN at 06:00 and San Juan Express at 07:00. Buses are no longer allowed to drop passengers at the Belize City ferry terminals, so budget a short taxi from the Belize City bus terminal if you are going to Caye Caulker on a bus ticket rather than a through shuttle. Doing it independently is cheaper: Belize bus to Benque Viejo, taxi or walk the last 3 km to the border, cross on foot, then frequent microbuses from Melchor de Mencos bus station to Santa Elena for about Q40
- When
- Daily, one morning departure per destination, typically 06:00
- Takes
- About 3 hours to San Ignacio, 5 hours 30 minutes to Belize City, 7 hours 30 minutes to the Caye Caulker water taxi terminal, about 10 hours to Bacalar
- Fare 2026
- US$30 to San Ignacio, US$35 to Belize City, US$55 through to the Caye Caulker water taxi terminal, US$65 to Bacalar. Independently, a Belize City to San Ignacio bus was BZ$10 in 2025 and the Melchor de Mencos to Santa Elena microbus about Q40
SeasonYear-round. Bookingreserve at least 48 hours ahead with the shuttle agencies; tickets are non-refundable and not transferable between dates. Run byAdrenalina Tours and other Flores agencies; Autobuses del Norte (ADN) and San Juan Express on the coaches; Westline, Shaw's, Silva's and BBOC on the Belize side.
Southbound to Sayaxché, Cobán, Lanquín and Semuc Champey
Santa Elena south to Sayaxché on the Río de la Pasión, then on to Cobán, with tourist shuttles continuing to Lanquín for Semuc Champey
Two ways. The local way is the microbuses that run the highway between Santa Elena and Cobán all day: you change at Sayaxché, where a small ferry takes vehicles across the river and a boatman will take foot passengers over for a couple of quetzales if the ferry queue is long. Microbuses from Cobán drop you at the ferry dock in the centre of town; the ones onward to Flores wait in the parking lot on the far bank. The tourist way is a door-to-door shuttle sold by any Flores agency, leaving around 08:00, with the Lanquín drop at the Exxon petrol station in the village. From Lanquín, pickups run to Semuc Champey itself for about Q25 on a rough road
- When
- Microbuses frequent through the day; the tourist shuttle daily at 08:00
- Takes
- 5 to 7 hours Flores to Cobán by microbus; about 7 hours on the shuttle to Cobán or Lanquín
- Fare 2026
- Q70 total by microbus to Cobán, plus about Q2 for the Sayaxché river ferry. Tourist shuttles from around Q100 to Cobán; one operator charges US$45 to either Cobán or Lanquín. Lanquín to Semuc Champey by pickup Q25 (2023)
SeasonYear-round. The Cobán road is paved and smooth, though winding for about an hour out of Cobán; the Lanquín to Semuc Champey stretch is rough and has been under construction, so allow extra time. Bookingmicrobuses none, pay on board; shuttles must be reserved 48 hours ahead. Run bylocal microbus owners; Adrenalina Tours and other agencies on the shuttle.
By water
Lake Petén Itzá boats to San Miguel, Tayasal, San José and San Andrés
Flores island piers across the lake to the San Miguel peninsula and the Tayasal ruins, and around the lake to San José and San Andrés on the north shore
Regular small boats to San Miguel, the village directly north across the water, leave from a pier at the north end of the island. Tourist lanchas are moored behind Hotel Santana and run to the Petencito zoo, the ARCAS wildlife centre and general lake tours; prices there are not fixed and haggling is expected. For Tayasal, haggle with the lancheros and insist you only want the ruins, or the tour will be padded out. The ARCAS centre runs its own boat from Flores at 08:00 and 15:00. For San José and San Andrés the boat is no longer the sensible option: the scheduled passenger service was cut back after the road improved, and regular vans and buses now go from the Santa Elena market instead, leaving when full
- When
- San Miguel boats regularly through the day; ARCAS boat at 08:00 and 15:00; tourist lanchas on demand; buses and vans to San José and San Andrés frequently between 06:00 and 17:00, a chicken bus about once an hour
- Takes
- A few minutes to San Miguel or Tayasal, about 10 minutes by boat to Petencito, about 30 minutes by road to San José and San Andrés
- Fare 2024
- Q10 per person to San Miguel (quoted June 2024). Tourist lancha prices are negotiated. Around Q100 for a lancha to Topoxté on Lago Yaxhá as a comparison. The van to San José and San Andrés has cost about Q7
SeasonYear-round; boatmen will not go out in a storm. Bookingnone, arrange at the pier or behind Hotel Santana. Run byindependent lancheros; ARCAS for its own boat; local bus and van owners on the road route.
Usumacinta river crossing to Mexico, for Yaxchilán and Palenque
Santa Elena west by road to Bethel and La Técnica on the Usumacinta, then a river crossing to Frontera Corozal in Chiapas, for Yaxchilán, Bonampak and Palenque
Independently, take the 05:00 Pinata bus from the Santa Elena bus terminal to La Técnica, the last stop past Bethel; it stops at Guatemalan immigration on the way, and this is the last place to change quetzales into pesos. There is no Guatemalan exit fee. The river crossing takes five minutes, and combi vans wait on the Mexican bank for Palenque; leave your bag in the combi and walk up to Mexican immigration, about 100 m along the road to the left. Agencies in Flores also sell a straight through shuttle to Palenque, which goes the other way, overland via the El Ceibo border, and a two-day Yaxchilán and Bonampak tour that uses the Bethel crossing and overnights at Frontera Corozal
- When
- Pinata bus daily at 05:00; through shuttles to Palenque daily at 08:00; the Yaxchilán tour daily at 04:00 from Flores or Santa Elena hotels
- Takes
- About 4 hours Santa Elena to La Técnica, then 5 minutes on the river; about 8 hours Flores to Palenque on the through shuttle via El Ceibo; the Yaxchilán tour is two days and one night
- Fare 2026
- The Bethel river crossing should be Q15, but foreigners usually pay Q20. Through shuttle to Palenque US$50 per person. The two-day Yaxchilán and Bonampak tour US$345 per person, minimum two people, including transport, boats, guides, a night's lodging and entrance fees
SeasonYear-round. The last stretch of road to La Técnica is unpaved; the tour operator flags May to October as the wet months and suggests a rain jacket. Bookingnone for the public bus and the river crossing; shuttles and tours must be booked 48 hours ahead. Run byPinata buses on the Guatemalan side, local boatmen on the river, Mexican combi operators onward; Adrenalina Tours on the packaged options.
What we could not find out
8 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
The brief describes a 4 km airport hop. Wikivoyage puts Mundo Maya airport about 2 km from the Flores causeway, and the official Tikal ticket site gives 63 km from Flores to the park. Treat the airport to island distance as roughly 2 to 4 km depending on where you measure to.
- 02
The state of the Flores causeway is unresolved. Guatemalan outlets reported a partial collapse of the fill bridge onto the island in June 2026 and restricted crossing afterwards, with repairs reported in progress in July 2026. Full headlines were readable through Google News RSS but the underlying articles could not be opened, so the current condition and any vehicle restriction is unconfirmed. Check with a Flores hotel before arrival.
- 03
No confirmed 2025 or 2026 fare was found for Fuente del Norte, ADN or Línea Dorada as published by the companies themselves. The Q200–250 range is the Wikivoyage going rate, and the older per-company figures on that page are stale. Fuente del Norte has an online booking engine that would give live fares.
- 04
San Juan Travel's own current Tikal shuttle timetable could not be reached; the fixed departure times listed are the ones Wikivoyage and a competing agency publish, and they differ slightly between sources.
- 05
Chicken bus fares on the Santa Elena to Tikal route and the frequency of the Uaxactún bus are from Wikivoyage's undated notes rather than an operator or timetable.
- 06
Nothing current was found on the Sayaxché to Yaxchilán river route as a passenger service in its own right, as distinct from the Bethel and La Técnica crossing. The Sayaxché boats to Aguateca, Ceibal and Dos Pilas are negotiated launch hire, with no published fare.
- 07
No published fare or schedule was found for the Flores to Lanquín leg run by local microbus rather than tourist shuttle.
- 08
The Tikal park ticket prices are live from the Ministry of Culture shop and are current for 2026; the park entry hours listed there are 06:00 to 18:00, while Wikivoyage reports staff clearing the ruins from 17:00 on a normal day ticket.
What the planner can route today
