Chiloé

Every bus and car crosses the Chacao channel on a ferry; a bridge is under construction but not open, and the island's own back roads run on more ferries, some barely known outside Chiloé.

How transport works here

11 ways of moving, each with its rule

We confirmed ten ways of moving to, from or around Chiloé: six by water, three by road and one under your own steam, from 16 sources. One entry is not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. One of them runs only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be.

The fares were seen in 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. Ten fares carry no year, because they could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 2 of the 11 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 28 September 2026, and ends with six things we could not confirm.

01
ferry

Pargua – Chacao barge across the Canal de Chacao

Pargua (mainland) to Chacao, Isla Grande de Chiloé

Every bus and car heading to Chiloé is driven straight onto the ferry ramp at Pargua; foot passengers buy a ticket at the booth beside the ramp

When
Continuous during the day, roughly every 15-30 minutes; two companies (Cruz del Sur and Transmarchilay) run the crossing between them
Takes
About 25-30 minutes crossing, plus queueing
Fare 2026
Car CLP 16,000 from 1 October 2026 (Cruz del Sur), up from CLP 15,500; a pickup/camioneta CLP 17,500, up from CLP 17,000; foot passengers ride free with a vehicle or pay a small separate fare on Cruz del Sur buses

SeasonYear-round; the channel gets strong currents and fog is common February-April, and the crossing can be suspended in the worst weather. BookingNone, drive up and queue; no reservations. Run byNaviera Cruz del Sur and Transmarchilay (Somarco), a two-operator duopoly on the crossing.

02
ferry

Naviera Austral ferry, Puerto Montt / Chaitén

Puerto Montt to Chaitén (Carretera Austral gateway), calling at Ayacara

Naviera Austral's Puerto Montt office is on the waterfront a short walk from the bus terminal

When
As of the schedule announced from 16 December 2025, 3 sailings a week on the ferry Don Baldo: Thursday 10:00, Friday 24:00 and Sunday 24:00 from Chaitén, each calling at Ayacara
Takes
Roughly 10 hours, subject to tides and weather
Fare
Tariffs are fixed by the state subsidy contract and were not changed by the December 2025 schedule change; no current per-class figure confirmed in this research

SeasonYear-round, with more sailings added in summer; the state subsidy fixes the timetable rather than demand. BookingBook ahead in high season; Naviera Austral's own site. Run byNaviera Austral (state-subsidised route).

03
ferry

Naviera Austral ferry, Quellón / Puerto Cisnes via Melinka

Quellón (south Chiloé) to Puerto Cisnes, calling at Melinka, on into Aysén

Naviera Austral office and terminal at the Quellón waterfront

When
Weekly-type service; the August 2026 report describes the Don Baldo also running this route with a single stop
Takes
About 11 hours, Quellón to Puerto Cisnes
Fare
No current fare figure confirmed in this research; a 2017-2018 Wikivoyage report gave a Quellón-Puerto Chacabuco boat at CLP 30,000 for a 36-hour trip, which is a different route and too old to use as a current figure

SeasonYear-round, weather-dependent; Aysén crossings are reinforced in the summer season. BookingBook ahead, especially for a vehicle. Run byNaviera Austral.

04
ferry

Canal Dalcahue crossing to Isla Quinchao (Achao, Curaco de Vélez)

Dalcahue (Isla Grande) to La Pasada, Isla Quinchao

Ferry ramp at the Dalcahue waterfront, a short walk from the market

When
A subsidised state contract has repeatedly changed operator; Naviera Puelche has held the contract in recent years and the service has at times run day and night
Takes
Under 10 minutes
Fare
Operated under a Ministry of Transport subsidy ("servicio obligatorio subsidiado"); no current passenger or vehicle fare confirmed in this research, and this research could not confirm whether foot passengers ride free

SeasonYear-round; the contract has been disrupted repeatedly by disputes between the operator and the regional transport ministry over the subsidy. BookingNone, drive or walk on. Run byNaviera Puelche (subsidised contract); the operator has changed several times and threatened withdrawal over the subsidy amount.

05
ferry

Canal Yal crossing to Isla Lemuy (Puqueldón)

Huicha (Chonchi, Isla Grande) to Chulchuy, Isla Lemuy

Ferry ramp at Huicha, on the Chonchi side; a fatal accident at the same ramp in April 2026 shows vehicles do board directly off the road

When
24 hours a day, 7 days a week since a new contract began 16 May 2024, using two larger vessels and one smaller one
Takes
A few minutes across the narrow channel; no exact duration confirmed
Fare
Part of the "Plan Barcazas para Chile" subsidy program; no current passenger or vehicle fare confirmed in this research

SeasonYear-round, 24-hour service under the current contract. BookingNone, drive or walk on. Run byNaviera Puelche (subsidised contract).

06
boat

Chartered boats to the smaller islands and the wooden churches

Castro, Dalcahue, Achao and Quemchi out to smaller archipelago islands (Mechuque, Chaulinec, Aucar and similar) where several of the UNESCO-listed wooden churches stand

Ask at the Dalcahue or Castro waterfront, or through a tour operator; Wikivoyage describes this as a charter rather than a scheduled service

When
No fixed timetable found for the smallest islands; a charter is arranged on the day
Takes
Varies by island
Fare
No fare confirmed in this research

SeasonWeather-dependent; winter rain and wind can cancel a crossing to the smallest islands with no notice. BookingArrange locally, no online booking found. Run byIndependent boat owners and tour operators.

07
service status

Puente Chacao – the bridge that is not open yet

Fixed link, Pargua to Chacao, replacing the ferry

Under construction beside the ferry route; not usable by travellers as of September 2026

When
Not open. As of 30 July 2026 the three towers (157m, 175m and 199m) were finished and the project was 66% complete; the cable and deck-panel stages were still ahead
Takes
Once open, MOP says the crossing time falls from 40 minutes to 3
Fare
No toll has been set publicly yet

SeasonGovernment target is operational by October 2028; this has slipped for over a decade and should not be assumed. Run byMinisterio de Obras Públicas (MOP), Dirección de Vialidad.

08
bus

Cruz del Sur / Buses Pacheco long-distance buses to Puerto Montt, Osorno and Santiago

Ancud and Castro bus terminals to Puerto Montt (and onward north); the ferry crossing is bundled into the ticket

Cruz del Sur bus station in Castro (Sotomayor/San Martín) and Ancud (Los Carrera/Los Cavada); also Tur-Bus and Pullman counters

When
Frequent daytime departures; overnight services run to Santiago
Takes
About 2 hours Castro-Puerto Montt; roughly 14 hours Santiago-Ancud
Fare
Around CLP 6,000 Castro-Puerto Montt; figures are a 2017-2018 Wikivoyage report and undated beyond that, so treat as indicative only

SeasonYear-round. BookingBuy at the terminal or the company counter; no advance booking needed for local routes. Run byCruz del Sur (which also owns several of the Chacao ferries and lets its own buses bypass the queue), Buses Pacheco, Tur-Bus, Pullman.

09
combined transfer

Ruta Bimodal: bus plus ferry to Chaitén through the fjords

Puerto Montt to Chaitén via Hornopirén, Fiordo Largo and Caleta Gonzalo, changing between bus and barge

Kémelbus and other operators sell it as a single through ticket from the Puerto Montt bus terminal

When
Daily in the Wikivoyage report; the August 2026 Naviera Austral schedule confirms the barge Pincoya is now assigned to the Fiordo Largo-Caleta Gonzalo leg of this same bimodal route
Takes
About 10 hours end to end (2018 Wikivoyage figure); no current duration confirmed
Fare
No current fare confirmed in this research

SeasonRuns year-round on the current Naviera Austral schedule, though the earlier Wikivoyage report describes it as scenic-summer-oriented. BookingBuy in advance at the bus station. Run byKémelbus (bus legs) with Naviera Austral (barge legs, including the barge Pincoya).

bus

Local micros: Ancud – Castro – Quellón and villages

Ancud, Castro and Quellón, and branch routes such as Ancud-Chepu and Ancud-Punihuil

Terminal Municipal in Ancud (Avenida Aníbal Pinto/Marcos Vera) for the village micros, separate from the Cruz del Sur long-distance terminal

When
The Ancud-Punihuil micro runs about 5 times on weekdays, 2 on Saturday; the Ancud-Chepu micro only 3 days a week (Mon/Wed/Fri)
Takes
Ancud-Punihuil under an hour
Fare
CLP 1,500-2,000 depending on stop (2018 Wikivoyage figure, undated beyond that and likely stale)

SeasonYear-round; heavy winter rain (April-December, per the regional climate record) makes some unpaved village roads slower or worse served. BookingNone, pay on board. Run byIndependent local micro operators.

One way

On foot, by bike, or otherwise

11
hitchhiking

Hitchhiking between village and next town

Short hops around the island, especially where the bus service is thin (e.g. the Chepu road)

Stand on the roadside; described as notably easier here than mainland Chile

When
On demand, no schedule
Takes
Varies
Fare
Free, though offering fuel money is customary in rural Chile generally; not stated on this page

SeasonYear-round; more viable in daylight given the rain and early dusk in winter. Run byn/a.

Not confirmed

What we could not find out

6 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.

  1. 01

No current (2025-2026) per-class passenger or vehicle fare was found for the Naviera Austral Puerto Montt-Chaitén or Quellón-Puerto Cisnes ferries; ask at the Naviera Austral office in Puerto Montt or Quellón, or check navieraustral.cl directly before travel.

  2. 02

The brief's premise that several of the inter-island crossings (Quinchao, Lemuy) are free public ferries could not be confirmed. Both the Dalcahue-Quinchao (canal Dalcahue) and Huicha-Chulchuy (canal Yal, to Lemuy) crossings are run under Ministry of Transport subsidy contracts with Naviera Puelche, which implies a state-subsidised fare rather than a free one, but no source found actually states the passenger or vehicle fare, or confirms it is zero. This should be checked at the ramp rather than assumed either way.

  3. 03

No current Quellón-Chaitén or Quellón-Puerto Chacabuco fare could be confirmed; the only figures found (CLP 13,000-30,000 range) are a 2017-2018 Wikivoyage report and are too old to rely on.

  4. 04

The colectivo network within and between Ancud, Castro and Quellón (mentioned in the brief) could not be separately confirmed beyond the general 'micros' description on Wikivoyage; no operator names, stands or fares were found for a distinct colectivo service as opposed to the bus micros already listed.

  5. 05

Winter rain's effect on specific routes (beyond the general climate record for Puerto Montt) was not confirmed with a Chiloé-specific source; the qualitative point in several options above rests on the regional climate pattern, not a transport-specific report.

  6. 06

Transmarchilay is named in the brief as a separate operator from Cruz del Sur on the Chacao crossing; a 2025-2026 Mundo Marítimo piece exists confirming the company still adjusts Chacao tariffs, but the article itself could not be reached in this research (Google News link did not resolve to a fetchable publisher page), so it is not cited above; Cruz del Sur's own fare change is cited instead.
