Aitutaki

One airline gets you here. Air Rarotonga flies Saab 340Bs from Rarotonga four to six times a day, 50 minutes, and there is no passenger ferry – the only boats that connect Aitutaki to the rest of the country are cargo ships. On the island itself there is no public bus: people ride scooters, and a Cook Islands licence costs a fraction on Aitutaki of what it costs in Rarotonga. Almost every visitor's transport is bundled – lagoon cruises and tours include a minibus pickup from anywhere on the island, resorts meet the flights, and two taxi operators fill the gaps. The lagoon itself is the second road. Boats leave O'otu Beach and the Arutanga area for Akaiami, Moturakau, Maina and One Foot Island; the operators also run water-taxi drop-offs on the motu for people who just want to be left on a beach. Tour boats run Monday to Saturday – Sunday is a rest day – and the whole system bends around wind and swell from November to March.

The place

Aitutaki, also traditionally known as Araʻura and Utataki, is the second most-populated island in the Cook Islands, after Rarotonga. It is an "almost atoll", with fifteen islets in a lagoon adjacent to the main island. Total land area is 18.05 km2 (6.97 sq mi), and the lagoon has an area of between 50 and 74 km2. A major tourist destination, Aitutaki is the second most visited island of the Cook Islands archipelago.

How transport works here

8 ways of moving, each with its rule

We confirmed eight ways of moving to, from or around Aitutaki: two by air, two hired or on demand, three by water and one under your own steam, from 30 sources. One of them runs only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. Three need a phone call or a message before you turn up.

The fares were seen in 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. We rate 3 of the 8 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 22 September 2026, and ends with ten things we could not confirm.

scheduled flight

Air Rarotonga, Rarotonga to Aitutaki

Rarotonga International Airport (RAR) to Aitutaki Airport (AIT), carrier code GZ

Book at flightbookings.airraro.com or at the Air Rarotonga desk in Avarua; the Aitutaki end is a single small terminal at the north of the island with a cafe, no ATM at the terminal itself. Air New Zealand and Air Tahiti Nui sell the leg as a through connection. Codes: RAR to AIT.

When
Daily, every day of the year. Live availability in September 2026 showed four to six departures a day: 08:00, 09:00, 10:30, 11:30, 15:30 and an 18:00 on some dates, with returns from Aitutaki at 09:10, 10:10, 11:40, 12:40 and 16:40. Air Rarotonga's own page says up to five times daily
Takes
50 minutes
Fare 2026
One way NZ$249–299 for Seat + Bag and NZ$345 Fully Flexible; a Seat Only fare of NZ$189 appears on some departures. Prices include 15% VAT and a NZ$20 domestic fuel surcharge coded 'Fuel Surcharge Domestic AIT'. Seat Only carries no checked bag; Seat + Bag and Flexible include one 23 kg piece plus 7 kg cabin (fares seen September 2026 for October 2026 – January 2027 travel)

SeasonYear round. Cyclone season is November to March and can disrupt flying; jet fuel supply problems in Rarotonga have cancelled flights in the past. BookingBook online in advance. The morning outbound and late afternoon return are heavily used by day-trippers, so those are the first to fill. Run byAir Rarotonga (airraro.com).

02
scheduled flight

Onward to Atiu and the other outer islands, back through Rarotonga

Aitutaki to Rarotonga, then Rarotonga to Atiu (AIU), Mauke (MUK), Mitiaro (MOI), Mangaia (MGS) or the Northern Group

Air Rarotonga's network is a hub and spoke through Rarotonga. Checking live availability over a four-week window in October 2026 returned no direct Aitutaki to Atiu flights at all, so the Wikivoyage claim of a weekly Wednesday Aitutaki–Atiu service no longer holds. Rarotonga to Atiu ran on about two days a week in that window, with 09:00 and 11:00 departures. Island-combination packages sold on aitutaki.com route you Rarotonga – Aitutaki – Rarotonga – Atiu – Rarotonga for that reason

When
Rarotonga to Atiu roughly twice a week in the sample window; Mauke, Mitiaro and Mangaia less often. Northern Group services to Manihiki, Penrhyn and Pukapuka are scheduled on demand
Takes
50 minutes Aitutaki to Rarotonga, then about 45 minutes Rarotonga to Atiu
Fare 2026
Rarotonga to Atiu one way from NZ$317 in October 2026, on top of the Aitutaki to Rarotonga leg. A five-night Aitutaki and Atiu package with all domestic airfares, accommodation, a lagoon cruise, a cave tour and airport transfers is quoted from NZ$2,005 per person twin share for travel 1 April 2026 – 31 March 2027 (seen September 2026)

SeasonYear round. Outer island runways are mostly unsealed; the government has said sealing them is the key to lowering Pa Enua travel costs. BookingBook online. Baggage is tighter on the Northern Group routes – 3 kg cabin on Manihiki, Penrhyn and Pukapuka, which have no overhead lockers. Run byAir Rarotonga.

tour package

Aitutaki Day Tour from Rarotonga

Rarotonga accommodation to Rarotonga Airport, fly to Aitutaki, island bus tour, lagoon cruise, fly back

Sold by Air Rarotonga at aitutakidaytour.com. Hotel pickups on Rarotonga start at 07:00; if you drive yourself you must be checked in by 07:40. The flight leaves Rarotonga at 08:00 and returns at 17:30, or 18:00 April to September

When
Daily except Sunday, following the Vaka Cruise's operating days
Takes
About 11 hours door to door, of which six hours are on the lagoon
Fare 2026
NZ$749 adult, NZ$374.50 child aged 2–11, infants under 2 free, VAT included. A temporary fuel surcharge of NZ$50 per tour applies on top and is shown under taxes and fees at booking (seen September 2026)

SeasonYear round; cancelled or moved when the lagoon is unsafe. BookingBook online. Baggage is carry-on 7 kg only, no checked bag. Towels and snorkelling gear are provided. Run byAir Rarotonga / The Vaka Cruise.

04
private hire

Taxis and airport transfers

Aitutaki Airport in the north to accommodation in Amuri, Ureia, Arutanga, Vaipae and Tautu

There is no public bus on Aitutaki – Cook Islands Tourism lists scheduled public transport for Rarotonga only. Most people are met. The Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort and Aitutaki Escape advertise free airport transfers, Paradise Cove lists arrival and departure point transfers, and package operators include airport transfers to and from the accommodation. Otherwise two taxi firms work the island, Pacifica Taxi and Tropicool Tours; some restaurants and bars run their own pickup vehicles. Tour operators also do airport runs as part of a booked cruise

When
Transfers are timed to the Air Rarotonga arrivals. Taxis are by phone booking rather than ranks
Takes
10 to 20 minutes from the airport to most accommodation
Fare 2026
Wikivoyage gives roughly NZ$10 per person for short trips and up to NZ$20 per person for longer ones, and says to agree the price when you book (seen September 2026; the underlying figures are undated). Resort airport transfers at the Lagoon Private Island Resort and Aitutaki Escape are free to guests

SeasonYear round. BookingBook ahead and confirm the price on the call. Tropicool Tours is run by Nane Herman and also does island tours and lagoon cruise transfers, but has limited taxi availability. Run byPacifica Taxi, Tropicool Tours, accommodation shuttles, lagoon cruise operators.

Full-day lagoon cruises to Akaiami, Maina and One Foot Island

O'otu Beach or the Arutanga foreshore, across the lagoon to Akaiami, Moturakau, Rapota, Honeymoon Island (Maina) and Tapuaetai (One Foot Island)

Three main operators. The Vaka Cruise (Air Rarotonga's 27 m catamaran Teariki Moana) leaves from O'otu Beach at the north end. Bishop's Cruises runs Lagoon Lova and Maina Express and lunches on One Foot Island. Teking Tours runs a smaller boat with a maximum of 24 guests and lunches on its own motu, Maina. All three collect you from your accommodation, the airport or the cruise pier – you do not need your own transport to join one

When
Daily except Sunday, which operators keep as a rest day; Teking also stops for national public holidays. Standard start is about 09:00–10:00, back 16:00. On cruise-ship days Teking shifts the start to about 10:00
Takes
About 6 hours on the water; the lagoon takes roughly an hour to cross
Fare 2026
The Vaka Cruise NZ$299 adult, NZ$149 child 5–11, infants free, plus a temporary NZ$16 per cruise fuel surcharge. Bishop's Cruises NZ$230 adult, NZ$115 child 4–11, rates valid 1 April 2026 – 30 March 2027. Teking group snorkelling tour NZ$260 adult (NZ$250 base plus card fee), NZ$105 child 5–9 (all seen September 2026)

SeasonYear round. Trips are moved or refunded when wind and swell make the lagoon unsafe, which operators say is uncommon but more likely in the November to March cyclone season. BookingBook online direct. Teking's online booking closes 24 hours before departure; after that call or WhatsApp the local team. Bishop's and the Vaka Cruise include return hotel transfers in the price. Run byThe Vaka Cruise (Air Rarotonga), Bishop's Cruises, Teking Tours.

06
water taxi

Motu drop-offs and private boat charters on the lagoon

Main island beaches and the Arutanga area out to Akaiami, Maina, Honeymoon Island, One Foot Island and the sandbars

This is the way to use the lagoon as transport rather than as a tour. Matriki Beach Huts on the north-west coast runs water taxi and motu drop-offs for guests and others. Bishop's Cruises sells half-day and full-day private charters on Taitoa and a ten-passenger charter on Maina Express. Teking runs one boat in each size as a whole-day charter. Cook Islands Tourism notes that reaching Honeymoon Island needs a boat and that several operators offer a water taxi service

When
On demand, Monday to Saturday, arranged the day before. Charters are sold by the day or half day, not by the seat
Takes
Akaiami is about 20 minutes from the main island; a full crossing of the lagoon takes about an hour
Fare 2026
Bishop's half-day private charter NZ$750 per couple plus NZ$50 per extra person to a maximum of six; full-day private charter NZ$1,000 per couple plus NZ$150 per extra person; ten-passenger full-day charter NZ$2,900 plus NZ$200 per extra person to a maximum of 14. Rates valid 1 April 2026 – 30 March 2027 (seen September 2026). Matriki's drop-off prices were not published

SeasonYear round, weather permitting. Fuel shortages on the island have twice forced the Island Government to ration petrol and prioritise licensed tour and taxi operators over private users. BookingPhone or email the operator, or ask your accommodation. Kayaks and outrigger canoes can also be hired to reach the nearest motu a few hundred metres offshore. Run byBishop's Cruises, Teking Tours, Matriki Beach Huts and other small owner-operators.

07
cargo boat

Inter-island cargo ships through Arutanga Wharf

Avatiu Port, Rarotonga, to Arutanga Wharf, Aitutaki, and on around the Southern Group

Arutanga Wharf is on the south-west side of the island, below the town. There is no passenger ferry and no published timetable for travellers – Wikivoyage's Cook Islands article states plainly that there are no scheduled boat or ferry services between the inhabited islands, and that details of freighter sailings appear in local newspapers. Taio Shipping is the private operator that serves the Southern Group including Aitutaki; ask at their Rarotonga office. The government's own new 43.9 m vessel MV Tuitui Moana carries up to 12 passengers alongside 100 tonnes of cargo, but government has said its focus is the Northern Group

When
Irregular, driven by cargo and fuel demand rather than passengers. Sailings can be weeks apart and are frequently delayed by weather or engine trouble
Takes
Not published; Aitutaki is 220 km north of Rarotonga
Fare 2026
No published passenger fare. Taio Shipping quotes freight rates to customers directly and has raised them in recent years

SeasonYear round, but sailings slip in rough weather and during the November to March cyclone season. BookingBy arrangement with the shipping company. The Cook Islands Wikivoyage article on nearby Atiu warns that cargo ships take passengers but that this is not recommended because times and openings are inconsistent. Run byTaio Shipping; MV Tuitui Moana and MV Matakiva operated by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Management.

08
scooter hire

Scooter, car and bicycle hire, and the Aitutaki driving licence

Around the main island: Amuri and the north, Arutanga and the wharf in the south-west, Vaipae and Tautu in the south-east

Hire is arranged through the rental companies or, more usually, through your accommodation – Matriki has scooters and bikes on site, Paradise Cove arranges vehicle, car and scooter rental, and the Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort includes bicycles. The licence is the thing to know: it is issued at the police station in Arutanga on production of your home licence, and it covers the whole of the Cook Islands

When
Self-drive, whenever you like. The island is small enough to circle in well under an hour
Takes
Arutanga to the airport is about 8 km; Maunga Pu and the Piraki Lookout are both short detours off the coast road
Fare 2026
Wikivoyage reports cars NZ$65–85 a day with a refundable NZ$40 petrol deposit, and scooters about NZ$30 a day with a NZ$10 deposit; it also gives the Aitutaki licence as NZ$2.50, against NZ$20 in Rarotonga. Cook Islands Tourism's official figure for a Cook Islands visitor licence is NZ$20 plus NZ$10 theory and NZ$10 practical, valid one year, issued at the Rarotonga police station (all seen September 2026)

SeasonYear round. Petrol has run out on the island more than once – in May 2026 public petrol sales were suspended entirely and the Island Government suggested caps of NZ$10 per motorbike. BookingWalk-in or through your accommodation. Helmets are legally required on Rarotonga only and not in the outer islands, though they are still recommended; underage riding is a live local complaint after a fatal crash near the airport in December 2023. Run byLocal rental companies and accommodation providers; licences from Cook Islands Police.

Not confirmed

What we could not find out

10 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.

  1. 01

Correction to the brief: Air Rarotonga is not a three-to-six-times-daily service only in theory – live booking data for October 2026 to January 2027 showed four to six departures every single day, and the airline's own Aitutaki page says up to five. There is no day of the week without a flight.

  2. 02

Correction to Wikivoyage: its Atiu article says Air Rarotonga flies Aitutaki to Atiu weekly on Wednesdays. A 28-day scan of Air Rarotonga's live availability in October 2026 returned zero Aitutaki–Atiu flights on any day. Treat Atiu as reachable only via Rarotonga until an operator confirms otherwise.

  3. 03

Wikivoyage's claim that sea cargo reaches Aitutaki only every three months could not be confirmed and looks out of date; Taio Shipping describes regular scheduled Southern Group voyages and fuel deliveries every few weeks. The actual Aitutaki call frequency is not published anywhere public – ask Taio Shipping in Rarotonga directly.

  4. 04

No public passenger fare or booking process for cargo ships to Aitutaki could be found. Taio Shipping's own website did not resolve. MV Tuitui Moana can carry 12 passengers but its maiden Pa Enua voyage was pushed back to November 2026 and its route pattern is not yet published.

  5. 05

Car, scooter and taxi prices come from Wikivoyage and are undated within the article; the year recorded is the year they were seen, not necessarily the year they were set. No Aitutaki rental company publishes a current rate card online. Worth confirming on arrival or by email with your accommodation.

  6. 06

The NZ$2.50 Aitutaki driving licence is widely reported (Wikivoyage and Matriki Beach Huts) but no Cook Islands Police or government page could be reached to confirm the current fee at the Arutanga station. Cook Islands Tourism only documents the Rarotonga process at NZ$20 plus two NZ$10 tests.

  7. 07

Nothing could be confirmed about walking or wading between motu – whether any pair of islets in the lagoon is genuinely walkable at low tide, and whether the Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort's island of Akitua can be reached on foot from O'otu Beach rather than by its boat. Ask the lagoon cruise crews, who know the tides.

  8. 08

No timetable or fare for a scheduled shuttle on the main island was found, and Cook Islands Tourism documents public buses for Rarotonga only. The 'bus' in the Aitutaki Day Tour and the free cruise transfers are chartered minibuses, not a public service. If a village or school bus exists for residents it is not documented online.

  9. 09

Kitesurfing sources say the south-east trade winds blow hardest May to October, and the cyclone season runs November to March, but no operator publishes a wind or swell threshold at which lagoon boats stop running. Teking says weather cancellations are uncommon and that trips are rescheduled rather than cancelled outright.

  10. 10

Coordinates are the OpenStreetMap centroid of the main island (way 266280766). Aitutaki Airport is at -18.8370, -159.7667 and the Arutanga wharf piers at about -18.8767, -159.7986, both from OpenStreetMap.
