Milford Sound / Piopiotahi
One road in, one road out. State Highway 94 runs 120 km from Te Anau through the single-bore Homer Tunnel, and an avalanche team with explosives and weather stations decides each winter day whether it is open at all. Everyone else arrives on a coach from Te Anau or Queenstown, on a light aircraft or helicopter, or on foot at the end of the Milford Track – and the track's two ends can only be reached by boat. There is no fuel, no shop and almost no mobile signal between Te Anau and the fiord, parking at the terminal is now paid by the hour, and the sandflies are a genuine planning factor.

Milford Sound is a fiord in the south west of New Zealand's South Island within Fiordland National Park, Piopiotahi Marine Reserve, and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site. It has been judged the world's top travel destination in an international survey and is acclaimed as New Zealand's most famous tourist destination. Rudyard Kipling called it the eighth Wonder of the World. The fiord is most commonly accessed via road by tour coach, with the road terminating at a small village also called Milford Sound.

8 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed eight ways of moving to, from or around Milford Sound: three hired or on demand, one by road, two by water and two by air, from 32 sources. One of them runs only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. Two need a phone call or a message before you turn up.
The fares were seen in 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. We rate 7 of the 8 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 22 September 2026, and ends with nine things we could not confirm.
Hired, booked and on demand
Queenstown coach and cruise day trip
Queenstown to Milford Sound Visitor Terminal and back, via Te Anau and the Milford Road (SH94)
RealNZ coaches make several pick-up stops across Queenstown and you choose one when booking; the Queenstown base is the RealNZ office at Steamer Wharf. Tracknet's scheduled coach also leaves Queenstown from the Athol Street / Queenstown Airport stops. Most Queenstown hotels and the i-SITE sell the same trips as agents. On board the coach there is a morning tea stop in Te Anau and several scenic stops on the Milford Road, so the driving time is not dead time.
- When
- Daily, year-round. RealNZ departs Queenstown around 07:00. Tracknet runs scheduled buses Queenstown to Milford Sound at 07:15 and 10:15, returning from Milford Sound at 10:00 and 14:30
- Takes
- 12–14 hours door to door. Roughly 5 hours of coach each way plus a 1.5–2 hour cruise
- Fare 2026
- RealNZ coach and cruise from NZD 292 per adult, seen 2026
SeasonYear-round; winter departures are fewer and can be cancelled outright when SH94 closes for snow or avalanche risk. BookingBook online with the operator or through a Queenstown agent; RealNZ allows changes or refunds up to 24 hours before departure, Tracknet the same. Run byRealNZ, Tracknet, GreatSights, awesomeNZ, InterCity.
Te Anau coach and cruise day trip
Te Anau to Milford Sound Visitor Terminal and back along the Milford Road (SH94)
RealNZ picks up only at its visitor centre, 85 Lakefront Drive, Te Anau – there are no accommodation pick-ups on this one. Tracknet's small-group Epic Milford does collect from Te Anau accommodation; its office is at the Te Anau Lakeview Holiday Park on the Manapouri highway, opposite the DOC visitor centre. This is the version locals recommend to people staying in Queenstown too: drive or bus to Te Anau the night before and start from there.
- When
- Daily. RealNZ departs Te Anau around 10:00; Tracknet's Epic Milford departs 07:45 and is back about 17:00, capped at 16 people
- Takes
- About 8 hours from Te Anau including stops and a cruise. Coach time is 2–3 hours each way for 120 km
- Fare 2026
- RealNZ from NZD 249 per adult; Tracknet Epic Milford from NZD 239 adult and NZD 99 child under 14. Both seen 2026

Self-drive the Milford Road (State Highway 94)
Te Anau to Milford Sound, 120 km on SH94 through the Homer Tunnel
There is no alternative route and no turn-off: SH94 north from Te Anau is the only road to the fiord. Fill the tank in Te Anau – there is no fuel or shop for the entire 120 km, and toilets only at Te Anau, Knobs Flat and Milford. Roadside condition signs are at Te Anau (1 km north), Knobs Flat (65 km) and near Milford. The Homer Tunnel is single-lane, 1.2 km long, 945 m above sea level and about 3.81 m high, with summer traffic lights. Mobile coverage exists only at Te Anau Downs, Totara campsite, The Divide and Milford itself.
- When
- Open whenever the avalanche hazard is low. At moderate hazard the road is open but may close at short notice; at high hazard it is closed. Homer Tunnel lights can hold you up to 20 minutes in summer
- Takes
- About 2 hours each way without stops, but DOC and Milford Sound Tourism both say to allow at least 2 hours plus 45 minutes to park and walk to the terminal
- Fare 2026
- Free to drive. Parking at the Visitor Terminal is NZD 10 per hour entering before 15:00, NZD 5 per hour after 15:00, NZD 30 for overnight cruise parking. Card only, no cash, licence-plate recognition. Free parking at Deepwater Basin, 20–30 minutes' walk away. Seen 2026
SeasonYear-round, but the avalanche season is roughly June to October and September to November is the riskiest period. Chains should be carried in winter; police can fine drivers NZD 750 for passing a chains-required sign. BookingNone for the road. Check the SH94 status before leaving Te Anau; pay parking at the machines or online within 24 hours of leaving. Run byMilford Road Alliance (NZ Transport Agency and Downer) manages the road; Stellar Parking runs the car park for Milford Sound Tourism Ltd.
By road
Tracknet scheduled bus on the Milford Road
Te Anau or Queenstown to Milford Sound, calling at Te Anau Downs, Knobs Flat, Hollyford Road End, Marian Corner and The Divide
This is transport rather than a tour, and it is the only way to get on or off at the trailheads along the Milford Road. Book any single sector on the Tracknet site or at its Te Anau office; the same buses carry trampers to The Divide for the Routeburn and to Te Anau Downs for the Milford Track. Free car parking in Te Anau is included if you book through Tracknet, which matters if you are walking a multi-day track.
- When
- Summer timetable 1 November to 1 May: Te Anau to Milford Sound 07:45, 10:15 and 13:25; Queenstown to Milford Sound 07:15 and 10:15; Milford Sound back to Te Anau 10:00, 14:30 and 16:45, and to Queenstown 10:00 and 14:30. A reduced winter timetable runs May to October
- Takes
- About 2 hours 15 minutes Te Anau to Milford Sound; about 5 hours 15–25 minutes Queenstown to Milford Sound
- Fare 2026
- Sector fares are quoted at booking and were not published as a table; for scale, the Te Anau Downs ferry-only Milford Track package was NZD 130 adult in 2026
SeasonFull timetable in the Great Walks season, 1 November to 1 May; a thinner winter timetable May to October. BookingEssential – online for instant confirmation, or freephone 0800 483 262. Full refund if cancelled 24 hours ahead. Run byTracknet Transport, 77 Manapouri-Te Anau Highway, Te Anau.

Milford Track boat transfers – Te Anau Downs and Sandfly Point
Te Anau Downs to Glade Wharf at the head of Lake Te Anau; Sandfly Point to the Milford Sound terminal
These two boats are the only way on and off the Milford Track – there is no road to either end. The outward catamaran leaves Te Anau Downs, 30 minutes up SH94 from Te Anau, at 14:00, met by the 13:25 Tracknet bus from Te Anau or the 10:15 from Queenstown. At the far end you walk 18 km on day four to reach Sandfly Point in time for the afternoon boats, which shuttle across to Milford between 14:00 and 16:30. Connecting buses leave Milford Sound at 14:30 and 16:45.
- When
- Daily in the Great Walks season. One outward sailing a day at 14:00 from Te Anau Downs; return sailings run continuously from Sandfly Point 14:00–16:30

- Te Anau Downs to Glade Wharf about 1 hour (DOC says 1 hour 15 minutes); Sandfly Point to Milford Sound 10–20 minutes
- Fare 2026

Run byTracknet, with the Te Anau Downs catamaran operated by Ultimate Hikes.
Cruise boats and kayaks inside the fiord
Milford Sound Visitor Terminal or Deepwater Basin out to the Tasman Sea and back, past Stirling and Lady Bowen Falls
Every cruise leaves from the Visitor Terminal, a 5–10 minute walk from the paid car park or 20–30 minutes from the free Deepwater Basin car park. Check in 20 minutes before departure. Kayaks meet at Deepwater Basin at the far end of the village, except the Te Anau day safari which collects you in Te Anau and drives you over. Smaller operators – Cruise Milford, Mitre Peak Cruises – run launches that get closer to the cliffs than the big boats.
- When
- Multiple cruise departures daily, roughly 09:00 to mid-afternoon; RealNZ lists Te Anau coach connections around a 14:45 cruise. Kayak trips run at sunrise, mid-morning and twilight
- Takes
- Cruises 1.5–2 hours. Kayak trips 3 to 5.5 hours at the fiord, 9–11 hours for the Te Anau day safari

Scenic flight and fly-cruise-fly from Queenstown or Wanaka
Queenstown Airport or Wanaka Airport to Milford Sound Airport (MFN) at the head of the fiord, usually with a cruise in between
Operators are all at the airport terminals, and most include a car transfer from Queenstown accommodation. Air Milford is at 3 Tex Smith Lane, Queenstown Airport; RealNZ sells a fly-cruise-fly with hotel pick-up to the airport; Southern Alps Air flies from Wanaka Airport on Lloyd Dunn Avenue. Every operator runs a weather check by phone about 75 minutes before departure – flights are cancelled or rescheduled freely, so book early in your stay.
- When
- Daily, weather permitting, with several departures a day in summer from Queenstown
- Takes
- About 45 minutes each way from Queenstown. Allow 4–5 hours for the whole fly-cruise-fly; Southern Alps Air quotes about 4 hours from Wanaka
- Fare 2026
- RealNZ fly-cruise-fly from NZD 730 per adult; Air Milford fly / nature cruise / fly from NZD 770 adult and NZD 540 child; Air Milford's Milford overflight without landing NZD 540 adult. Seen 2026
SeasonYear-round but entirely weather-dependent. The Milford Sound runway has had resurfacing closures, so confirm the aerodrome is open. Helicopter from Te Anau and Manapouri
Te Anau town helipad or Manapouri into Fiordland National Park, with alpine and glacier landings; also baggage and hut support on the Milford Track
Fiordland Helicopters operates from 60 Town Centre, Te Anau, a short walk from the lakefront and the DOC visitor centre. This is the option people use when they have half a day rather than a full day, and the same machines are used to fly walkers over avalanche-damaged sections of the Milford Track and to move guided-walk baggage between huts.
- When
- On demand, daily, subject to weather; no fixed timetable
- Takes
- 30 minutes to 90 minutes depending on the route
- Fare 2026
- NZD 380 for a 30-minute Kepler Mountain flight from Manapouri, NZD 645 for a 45-minute Fiordland flight with two landings, NZD 1,015 for 55 minutes to Doubtful Sound, NZD 1,525 for the 90-minute Dusky and Doubtful flight. Seen 2026
SeasonYear-round, weather dependent. BookingDirect with the operator; walk-ins possible in quiet periods but book ahead in summer. Run byFiordland Helicopters, Te Anau.
What we could not find out
9 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
Sandflies are the one thing nobody warns you about enough. Milford Sound Tourism says they come out mostly at dawn and dusk and to bring insect repellent; DOC's driver tips also suggest carrying repellent. The end of the Milford Track is literally called Sandfly Point. No source quantifies how bad they are at the wharf while you wait for a boat.
- 02
Mobile phone coverage: DOC says fibre has been laid along the Milford Road but reception exists only at Te Anau Downs, Totara Campsite, The Divide and Milford Sound. There is no cellphone coverage on the Milford Track at all. Emergency phones are a card-phone at Knobs Flat, a satellite phone at the Homer Tunnel and a card-phone at Milford Sound – that last list is from a DOC page that may not have been updated since fibre went in.
- 03
Tracknet publishes departure times for its scheduled sectors but not a fare table; single-sector fares only appear at the checkout, so no Te Anau to Milford Sound one-way bus fare is recorded here.
- 04
The seed note said a Queenstown day trip is 'more than 12 hours'. DOC puts the Queenstown return drive at 12–14 hours and RealNZ at about 5 hours of coach each way, so the seed is right but conservative.
- 05
The seed note credited Fiordland Helicopters with flights 'from Te Anau' to Milford Sound. The operator's current site lists Fiordland, Doubtful and Dusky Sound and Kepler Mountain flights with prices, but no priced Milford Sound helicopter product, so no Milford-specific helicopter fare is claimed.
- 06
Proposed access changes: in June 2025 the Government announced the first tranche of Milford Opportunities Project decisions, keeping cruise ship and aircraft access and rejecting a proposed ban, with NZD 15.2 million for infrastructure. A Southland district tourist levy for Milford was still only a proposal reported in May 2026 and no rate or start date was confirmed in sources fetched here.
- 07
Convoy management through the Homer Tunnel is often described by drivers but was not confirmed in any NZTA or DOC page fetched. What is documented is single-lane operation with summer traffic lights and delays up to 20 minutes, plus a Restricted No Stopping Zone between the Hollyford Road junction and The Chasm with only two safe stopping areas, The Chasm and Monkey Creek. Ask the Milford Road Alliance in Te Anau on 03 249 7004 for current escort practice.
- 08
NZTA's own site blocks automated requests, so the avalanche and travel-tips detail here comes from a March 2025 archived copy of nzta.govt.nz rather than the live page. Check the live SH94 status before travel.
- 09
Air Milford's own feed mentions the Milford Sound runway being closed for resurfacing, but no source fetched gave the dates or whether it affects scheduled scenic flights.
