
Tashkent
Tashkent, also known as Toshkent, is the capital and largest city of Uzbekistan.
It is the most populous city in Central Asia, with a population of more than 3.1 million people as of July 1, 2025. It is located in northeastern Uzbekistan. Tashkent's history stretches back centuries as part of the ancient Silk Road, the network of trade routes that connected the Eastern world and the Western world. The city has long been a crossroads of cultures, goods and ideas.

This has slow overnight trains from Khiva, Olot, Kungrad, Termez, Sarasya and Shabat, which all run via Samarkand.

Ten modernist buildings in and near Tashkent were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2026: Zhemchug Residential Building, State Museum of History, Central Exhibition Hall of the Academy of Arts, Kosmonavtlar Metro Station, Big Solar Furnace (Sun Heliocomplex) a bit east of the city, Peoples' Friendship Palace, State Museum of Arts, State Circus, Chorsu Bazaar, and the Alisher Navoi Cinema Palace.

This yellow-brick madrasah was built in 1570 by the vizier, scientist and poet Kulbobo Kukeldash - Kukeldash means "the Khan's foster brother'.

This madrassa was erected in 1850 in honour of the scholar Abdulkhasim Khan.

Things to do
National Library of Uzbekistan is a pseudo-classical building at Navoi 1 in the government quarter (Metro Mustakillik maydoni). It has a comprehensive stock, but you have to register (in Uzbek) to get in.

They play in Super League at Milliy Stadium (capacity 34,000), 5 km southwest of city centre.

They too play in Super League, and often win it.

Relaxed cafe near the concert hall and government quarter. Besh Qozon, Guards Colonel Khodjaev 1 (100 m north of TV tower),. Daily 09:00-23:00. Busy, somewhat chaotic place but it serves great plov.

Getting around Tashkent the local way
- Get inSince covid, no trains cross the Kazakh-Chinese border; you have to trek away north via Petropavl or Novosibirsk to join the Trans-Siberian railway.
- Get inShared taxis supplement the buses for inter-city journeys.
- Get aroundMarshrutkas also ply around the city but are more expensive, around 3000 som is standard.
