Gori
Gori is a city in eastern Georgia, which serves as the regional capital of Shida Kartli.
It is located at the confluence of two rivers, the Mtkvari and the Liakhvi. Gori is the fifth most populous city in Georgia. Its name comes from the Georgian word gora (გორა), meaning "heap", "hill", or "mountain".
Getting around Gori the local way
Gori sits on the Tbilisi–Kutaisi–Batumi rail and marshrutka corridor an hour from the capital, but the road and rail lines north to Tskhinvali stop dead at the South Ossetian boundary line a few kilometres away, and Uplistsikhe is reached by a mix of taxi, seasonal train and infrequent local bus rather than any through service.

Not yet confirmed: Ateni valley and Ateni Sioni church: no working transit source found, so no option is written for it. The one candidate page (geowel.org/ateni-valley) returns a PHP fatal error under HTTP 200 rather than content, and nothing else names a bus, marshrutka or fare. Likely reached only by taxi from Gori; ask at the main square for a price before departing.; Georgian Railway's ticket-search endpoint (POST gr.com.ge/api/ticket-search) rejected repeated attempts with a validation error on standard_passengers despite matching the documented field names; only the /api/stations lookup (confirming Gori's station code 57900, not hidden) could be verified working in this session. Someone completing a real booking should retry with the exact payload shape the front end sends, or use the station ticket window.; The 'trains to Kutaisi 16:30, Borjomi 17:51, Poti 18:46, Tbilisi 19:17' schedule on the Gori Wikivoyage page is dated only 'as of September 14, a Friday' with no year given and reads as a personal trip report rather than a published timetable; treated here as unconfirmed and left out of the options above.; No winter-specific note (snow closures, reduced marshrutka frequency) for Gori itself was found in any source consulted; the Roads Department feed shows live, current restrictions but nothing about a recurring winter pattern in Gori itself. Ask locally in the November–March window.; The brief's framing of Java and Tskhinvali roads as roads that 'no longer function as through routes' matches what was found: the closure is a 2008 war-era administrative boundary line held by Russian/South Ossetian forces, not a Georgian government traffic restriction, so it will never appear in the Roads Department's own restriction feed. Recorded as a border_crossing entry rather than a service_status, since it is not the Roads Department's call to make..
The field note on Gori reads this entry in full, one option at a time, with every source beside it.
