Entebbe
Entebbe is a city in Central Uganda which is located on Lake Victoria peninsula, approximately 36 kilometres (22 mi) southwest of the Ugandan capital city, Kampala.
Entebbe was once the seat of government for the Protectorate of Uganda prior to independence, in 1962. The city is the location of Entebbe International Airport, Uganda's largest commercial and military airport, which gained worldwide attention in a 1976 Israeli rescue of 100 hostages kidnapped by the militant group of the PFLP-EO and Revolutionary Cells (RZ) organizations. Entebbe is also the location of State House, the official office and residence of the President of Uganda.
Getting to Entebbe
The airport of Entebbe is Uganda's sole air gateway and, as such, is served by several African and international airlines.

Getting around Entebbe the local way
Entebbe is a 40 km peninsula town at the end of one road, and that road is the whole story. Everything overland leaves along the Entebbe Road towards Kampala: 14-seater matatus for UGX 5,000, an official yellow-band Airport Taxi for UGX 100,000, ride-hailing for around UGX 80,000, and one genuinely scheduled door-to-door shuttle that runs on to Jinja. Beside it runs the tolled Kampala–Entebbe Expressway, which is what turns a two-hour rush-hour crawl back into forty minutes if your driver is willing to pay UGX 5,000 – but it bans motorbikes under 400 cc, and since 31 August 2026 it has banned lorries of 7,500 kg and over as well, which pushes all of that traffic back onto the old road. The other direction out of town is the water. Nakiwogo landing, 4 km northwest, is the passenger ferry pier for Bugala Island in the Ssese group and, since November 2025, for Bukasa; Kasenyi on the Kampala side is where the unscheduled wooden lake taxis to the smaller islands go from; Ngamba Island chimpanzee sanctuary is a 45-minute speedboat or 90-minute canoe from Pelican Lodge and Marina. The reliable Ssese route is not from Entebbe at all – it is the free roll-on roll-off ferry from Bukakata near Masaka, which runs six times a day.
- 01Entebbe Road matatus to Kampalamatatu
Kitooro matatu park, Entebbe, to the Old Taxi Park (Park Enkadde) or Gwanda park in central Kampala
- Where
- In Entebbe the stage is the matatu park at Kitooro, behind the 7Seasons Hotel, about 0.0566N 32.4597E – the K in Kitooro is pronounced ch. Vehicles sit there until all fourteen seats are sold, usually under 15 minutes but over an hour late at night or on a Sunday, so a matatu you flag in the town centre is already full and will not stop. Coming the other way, ask in the Kampala taxi parks for the Entebbe stage – ez'entebbe – and look for the painted destination signs; both the old park and Gwanda have them. You pay the conductor when you get out, and you can get off anywhere along the road by saying 'stage'. From the airport itself the matatus do not come to the terminal: walk 500 m to the airport gate and either take a matatu the 4 km into Kitooro for about UGX 2,000 or a boda for UGX 5,000, then change. A better-organised operator, Fly Express Travellers, runs the same route without touting for passengers en route, with a flat fare regardless of distance; their Kampala stage is on Nasser Road opposite the railway station entrance.
- When
- All day, departing when full – usually within 15 minutes, up to an hour late evening and Sundays
- Fare (2026)
- UGX 5,000 Entebbe to Kampala; about UGX 2,000 airport gate to Kitooro. Pay double for the whole front seat if you want room
- Takes
- 45–60 minutes normally; Kampala's rush hours stretch it to 2 hours
- Season
- Year-round, daily. Thinner after dark and on Sundays
- Booking
- None. Cash to the conductor, small notes

- 02Airport Taxi, special hires and the ride-hailing appsprivate hire
Entebbe International Airport and Entebbe town to Kampala and anywhere else
- Where
- Security keeps vehicles away from the terminal, so cars wait in the car park and you walk out to them; on departure you walk up to the upper roadway because taxis cannot drop at departures, and there are porters for the bags. The official cars carry a yellow band and the words AIRPORT TAXI in black with an identification number – note the number. The Civil Aviation Authority's published rate to Kampala is US$40 or UGX 100,000, about 40 minutes; anywhere else is negotiated. In Entebbe town, saloon-car special hires wait near the matatu park, almost none have meters, and most trips inside town settle at UGX 15,000 to 20,000 after haggling; the airport to Entebbe town run is about UGX 15,000. Uber, Bolt, Faras and Safe Car all work in Entebbe and Kampala if you have data, and they quote before you accept, which removes the argument; the going app rate to Kampala from the airport is around UGX 80,000 and it climbs with distance to your hotel. If you have no Ugandan SIM, ask a Ugandan to order for you – that is normal here.
- When
- 24 hours at the airport; on demand in town
- Fare (2026)
- UGX 100,000 or US$40 official Airport Taxi to Kampala; from about UGX 80,000 by app; UGX 15,000 airport to Entebbe town; UGX 15,000–20,000 within Entebbe
- Takes
- 40 minutes airport to Kampala on the expressway, over 2 hours in bad traffic on the old road
- Season
- Year-round
- Booking
- Walk up at the airport, or book in the app. Agree the fare before you get in with any non-app car

- 03Boda-bodas, including the app-based onesboda boda
Anywhere in Entebbe; the airport gate to Kitooro; short hops the matatus will not do
- Where
- You will not have to look. Riders call out to pedestrians everywhere in town, and a plain no is enough to end it. Agree the fare before the ride starts – short hops go for as little as UGX 1,000, the 4 km from the airport gate to Entebbe town is about UGX 5,000, and longer runs out of town can reach UGX 30,000. Men ride facing forward, many women ride side-saddle. The safety problem is real: boda collisions are the commonest cause of hospital admissions and road deaths here, riders will cut against traffic and through pedestrians to save a minute, and no helmet is offered to the passenger. Ask for a slower speed in a conversational way and most will comply. The app services – SafeBoda, Uber, Bolt and Faras – are the sane version: the riders are trained, carry a passenger helmet, the fare is shown before you confirm, and you can pay by app or cash. They work in and around Kampala and Entebbe.
- When
- Constant, day and night
- Fare (2026)
- From UGX 1,000 for a very short hop; about UGX 5,000 airport gate to town; UGX 3,000–20,000 for most Kampala trips, up to 30,000 to the outskirts
- Takes
- Minutes; 10–15 minutes airport gate to Kitooro
- Season
- Year-round. Wet roads and night riding are when the crashes happen
- Booking
- None for street bodas. App booking for SafeBoda, Uber, Bolt, Faras

- 04Pineapple Express, the Entebbe – Kampala – Jinja shuttleshuttle bus
Entebbe Airport and selected Entebbe guesthouses, to five Kampala pick-up points, on to Jinja town and Bujagali
- Where
- This is the only genuinely scheduled door-to-door service on the corridor, and the reason to use it is that it does not enter the bus parks and does not stop to fill seats. Vehicles seat five to seven with a belt each. It picks up at Entebbe Airport and at named Entebbe guesthouses and backpackers; in Kampala the five stops are Bushpig Backpackers, Acacia Mall, Oasis Mall (with a free onward shuttle to Red Chilli) and Lugogo Mall; in Jinja it will collect or drop anywhere in Jinja town or at Bujagali. Timetable: Entebbe 05:00 reaching Kampala 06:15 and Jinja 08:45, and Entebbe 14:30 reaching Kampala 16:15 and Jinja 19:00. Coming back, Jinja 07:30 to Kampala 10:30 and Entebbe 11:45, and Jinja 13:30 to Kampala 16:30 and Entebbe 17:45. Kampala to Entebbe alone at 05:00, 10:30 and 16:15. They cannot wait for you and there are no refunds for your own lateness, though an airline delay makes the ticket transferable to another departure. Book through the contact form on their site.
- When
- Daily. Two through runs each way Entebbe–Jinja, plus three Kampala–Entebbe departures
- Fare (2026)
- Kampala–Entebbe US$15 or UGX 50,000; Entebbe–Jinja US$29 or UGX 100,000; Kampala–Jinja US$23 or UGX 80,000. Their rate is US$1 = UGX 3,500. Day returns booked in advance save 10 per cent

- 05The Kampala–Entebbe Expressway: the toll, and who is banned from itservice status
Entebbe International Airport and Mpala to Kajjansi and Busega, with a spur to Munyonyo
- Where
- Two parallel roads run the 40 km to Kampala. The old Entebbe Road is free, single carriageway, congested and accident-prone, and it is the one that potholes in the rains. The expressway is gated with three toll plazas – Busega, Kajjansi and Mpala – and a trip means one entry and one exit among them. Toll per passage: motorcycles over 400 cc UGX 3,000, light vehicles UGX 5,000, medium goods vehicles of two to three axles UGX 10,000, large goods vehicles and buses of four to five axles UGX 15,000, and six axles or more UGX 18,000. Only cash in shillings or a prepaid Upesi smart card is taken at the booth – no mobile money or bank card at the barrier, though you can load the card by MTN MoMo, Airtel Money or Stanbic FlexiPay. The first card is free, a replacement is UGX 20,000, and the weekly and monthly passes cut the per-trip rate by 50 and 70 per cent. Only the presidential convoy, ambulances and fire engines go free. Two things bar you from the road: pedestrians, animals and motorbikes below 400 cc are prohibited, which rules out every boda-boda, and from Monday 31 August 2026 the Ministry of Works temporarily banned all heavy commercial vehicles of 7,500 kg gross weight and above from the entire expressway, ramps and plazas included, while axle-load weighbridges are commissioned. Expect that lorry traffic to be on the old road instead. Uganda's roads generally deteriorate in heavy rain and some tarmac becomes extremely potholed, so allow more time in the March–May and September–November wet seasons.
- When
- 24 hours
- Fare (2026)
- UGX 5,000 per passage for a car, UGX 3,000 for a motorcycle over 400 cc, UGX 10,000–18,000 for goods vehicles and buses
- Takes
- About 40 minutes airport to Kampala by expressway; over 2 hours on the old road in rush hour
- Season
- Year-round. The wet seasons are when the free alternative road is worst
- Booking
- No booking. Buy or load an Upesi card at any of the three plazas

- 06Nakiwogo ferries to the Ssese Islands: MV Kalangala and MV Rafikiferry
Nakiwogo landing, 4 km northwest of central Entebbe, to Lutoboka on Bugala Island (Kalangala), and to Bukasa Island
- Where
- Nakiwogo pier sits at about 0.0805N 32.4492E, reachable by special hire and sometimes by matatu from Entebbe town. MV Kalangala is the vehicle-and-passenger ferry to Kalangala Bay on Bugala, the island most people mean by Ssese: one return sailing a day, historically leaving Kalangala at 08:00 and Nakiwogo at 14:00, about three and a half hours, with a snack bar on board. Second class has been USh 10,000 and first class USh 14,000, the difference being crowding rather than comfort, and vehicles have been charged around UGX 50,000; passenger space is usually fine but car space is limited. Treat the sailing as provisional – this vessel has been out of service for long stretches, including from mid-2025 into early 2026. Since November 2025 a second, passenger-only vessel, the 250-seat MV Rafiki, has run Nakiwogo to Bukasa Island under a public–private arrangement with Nation Oil Distributors; it too has been suspended for weeks at a time. Before you build a day around either, telephone your Kalangala guesthouse, which will know whether the boat sailed that morning.
- When
- MV Kalangala one return sailing a day when in service; MV Rafiki daily on the Bukasa run. Both suspend without much notice
- Fare (2024)
- USh 10,000 second class and USh 14,000 first class on MV Kalangala; about UGX 50,000 for a vehicle
- Takes
- About 3h 30m Nakiwogo to Kalangala
- Season
- Year-round in principle. Storms, dry-docking and breakdowns are the real constraint
- Booking
- None. Turn up, but confirm the boat is running first

- 07The free Bukakata – Bugoma ferry, the reliable way to Sseseferry
Bukakata landing near Masaka on the mainland to Bugoma (Luku) at the western end of Bugala Island
- Where
- If the Entebbe boat is down, or you simply want a sailing you can plan around, this is the route locals use. Two roll-on roll-off ferries, MV Ssese and MV Pearl, shuttle in opposite directions across a 30-minute crossing. Monday to Saturday each vessel does six crossings: departures at 07:00, 08:00, 11:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 17:00, arriving half an hour later; on that timetable the highlighted 07:00 Bukakata and 15:00 Bugoma runs are reserved for dangerous cargo. On Sundays it is passengers only, with four crossings each way at 08:00, 10:00, 14:00 and 16:00. Arrive at the port half an hour to an hour early; vehicles register at the main gate and passengers register separately before boarding, and nobody may stay in a vehicle on the crossing. Getting to Bukakata: from Kampala take a bus or matatu to Masaka, ask the conductor to drop you at Nyendo stage about 2 km short of Masaka town, then one of the pick-up trucks that run the 40 km to Bukakata. By car, bear left at the Total garage on the Kampala approach to Masaka, left again at Nyendo Trading Centre and left again at the Petro Uganda filling station. From Bugoma it is 32 km of road to Kalangala town, served by regular pick-ups. The crossing has been free to the public since 2009 because the government pays Kalangala Infrastructure Services an annual subsidy of UGX 7 billion and treats the ferry as a public road – a subsidy whose renewal was in dispute in 2025, with the operator's fallback tariff quoted at UGX 8,000 a passenger and UGX 30,000 to 100,000 a vehicle, so carry cash in case.
- When
- Six crossings each way Monday to Saturday, four each way on Sunday
- Fare (2026)
- Free to passengers under the government subsidy. The operator's unsubsidised tariff, if it ever applies, was quoted as UGX 8,000 per passenger and UGX 30,000–100,000 per vehicle
- Takes
- 30 minutes
- Season
- Year-round, daily
- Booking
- None. Register at the gate and be there 30–60 minutes before

- 08Kasenyi lake taxis to the smaller Ssese islandscargo boat
Kasenyi fishing terminal, off the Entebbe–Kampala road, to the outer islands of the Ssese group
- Where
- The islands the ferries do not serve are reached by lake taxi: wooden boats roughly 10 m long carrying goods and local passengers, with ice, crates of soda and bananas in the bottom that you sit on. They go from the Kasenyi fishing terminal, about halfway between Entebbe and Kampala and around 5 km off the highway down a dirt road that minivans run along. There is no dock – porters carry passengers out through chest-deep water, so expect to get wet – and no life jackets are provided. These boats roll far more than a ferry. Timings vary and are not kept to, so ask your destination guesthouse what time their boat goes, then arrive early and wait; there are small places to sit with a soda. Kasenyi is a rough spot: watch your things and do not leave a car there. Storms on the lake are the genuine danger here and small overloaded launches do sink.
- When
- Unscheduled, roughly daily to the inhabited islands, more often when there is cargo
- Fare (2024)
- Most long trips around USh 10,000. A private boat is on the order of USh 50,000 per hour because of fuel
- Takes
- Varies by island; several hours to the far ones
- Season
- Year-round, but wind and storms stop them, and the risk is highest when heavily loaded
- Booking
- None. Ask your destination for the day's timing

- 09Boats to Ngamba Island chimpanzee sanctuaryspeedboat
Pelican Lodge and Marina, Entebbe, to Ngamba Island, 23 km southeast across the equator
- Where
- The sanctuary arranges the boat as part of the visit, so you book the trip rather than the crossing. Departures are from Pelican Lodge and Marina in Entebbe, not from the town pier. Two boats: a speedboat taking 45 to 50 minutes, leaving 09:00 and 12:45, and a motorised wooden canoe taking 90 minutes, leaving 08:30 and 12:00. The half-day trip runs 09:00 to 12:45 or 12:45 to 17:00; the full-day version runs 08:30 to 17:30 with the briefing at Pelican Marina from 08:30. Chimpanzee feeding sessions are at 07:30, 11:00, 14:30 and 18:30, so a half-day trip catches one. The price falls sharply with group size because the boat is the cost: the half-day trip is US$365 for one international visitor, US$188 each for two, US$132 each for three and US$110 each for four or more, with East African Community residents paying US$326, 154, 116 and 90. The full-day excursion is US$560 for one down to US$167 each at five. Lunch is US$20 and an airport pick-up and drop US$20 per person. Book at booking.chimpanzeetrust.org or by WhatsApp on +256 758 221 880; the office is on Plot 1 Lugard Avenue in Entebbe.
- When
- Two speedboat and two canoe departures daily
- Fare (2026)
- Half-day US$110 per person at four or more, rising to US$365 for a single visitor; EAC residents US$90 to US$326. Full day US$167–560

Not yet confirmed: The brief says Entebbe is 40 km from Kampala. Sources disagree by a few kilometres and it matters less than the road you take: Wikivoyage says 35 km, Wikipedia's article on the Kampala–Entebbe Road says about 40 km, and the Civil Aviation Authority says the airport is 40 km from Kampala on a 42 km road. Use 40 km.; The brief asks which Ssese ferry serves which island. The answer is not the one Wikivoyage implies. Nakiwogo serves Bugala (Kalangala/Lutoboka) by MV Kalangala and, since November 2025, Bukasa by MV Rafiki. Bukakata near Masaka serves Bugoma/Luku at the other end of Bugala. Kasenyi serves everything else by unscheduled lake taxi. Wikivoyage's Bukakata timetable of 08:00, 11:30, 13:30 and 16:00 is out of date – the operator's own 2026 timetable is six crossings a day Monday to Saturday.; The brief asks whether the Kalangala ferry is free. The free one is the Bukakata–Bugoma crossing, not the Entebbe one: the government pays KIS UGX 7 billion a year to keep it free and treats it as a public road. MV Kalangala from Nakiwogo has always charged. The subsidy's renewal was disputed in May 2025 and no source confirming its status after July 2025 could be found; if it lapsed, the operator's stated fallback is UGX 8,000 a passenger.; MV Kalangala's current operating status could not be confirmed. Google News headlines show it grounded from about July 2025, still grounded over Christmas 2025, preparing to resume in late February 2026, and passengers complaining about it in September 2026. The Daily Monitor and New Vision articles behind those headlines would not load. Treat the Nakiwogo sailing as needing a phone call before you rely on it.; No current published fare was found for MV Kalangala or MV Rafiki. The USh 10,000 and 14,000 figures are Wikivoyage's and predate the 2025 grounding; the UGX 50,000 vehicle charge is from a 2021 interview with the operator.; The Entebbe Airport Express bus that Wikivoyage lists at US$30 with ten trips a day does not appear to exist in that form. entebbeairportexpress.com is a private car-transfer company quoting from US$20, not a scheduled bus. Wikivoyage also prices the Pineapple Express at UGX 80,000 for Kampala–Entebbe; the operator's own page says UGX 50,000, and 80,000 is the Kampala–Jinja fare.; Hotel airport shuttles were not priced. Most Entebbe hotels sell a transfer, but none publishes a rate; expect it to sit between the UGX 80,000 app fare and the UGX 100,000 official Airport Taxi rate.; The Entebbe to Masaka route is not a direct service. Everything goes through Kampala, and from Kampala Postbus and Link run to Masaka; the Postbus fare of UGX 10,000 to Masaka is a November 2015 figure on Wikivoyage and will have moved.; No source specific to potholes on the Entebbe Road in the rainy season could be found. The Ugandan news sites that cover road condition are behind Cloudflare, and the Ministry of Works site publishes notices rather than conditions. The claim here is Wikivoyage's general statement about Ugandan roads deteriorating in heavy rain.; uetoll.go.ug and unra.go.ug both time out from here. The toll figures come instead from kee.go.ug, the expressway's own site under the Ministry of Works, which is current..
The field note on Entebbe reads this entry in full, one option at a time, with every source beside it.
