Sakhalin

Sakhalin is reached from the Russian mainland by air to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk or by the Vanino-Kholmsk rail ferry across the Tatar Strait; the Japan ferry that once linked the south of the island to Hokkaido has not run since 2019, and no evidence was found of any way to book the island's transport from outside Russia.

How transport works here

9 ways of moving, each with its rule

We confirmed seven ways of moving to, from or around Sakhalin: one by water, one by air, one by rail and cable, two by road and two hired or on demand, from 15 sources. Two entries are not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. One of them runs only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. One needs a phone call or a message before you turn up.

The fares were seen in 2019 to 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. Six fares carry no year, because they could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 2 of the 9 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 28 September 2026, and ends with seven things we could not confirm.

Vanino - Kholmsk rail ferry

Vanino (Khabarovsk Krai) to Kholmsk (Sakhalin), across the Tatar Strait

Buy at the SANES ticket office (Kassa SANES) at Vanino railway station or the Transport Agency ticket office on Lenin Square, Kholmsk; no online sale found

When
Three diesel-electric ferries of the 'Sakhalin' type work the line and all three (Sakhalin-8, -9 and -10) appear on SASCO's own schedule block, but passengers are carried on only two of them, Sakhalin-8 and Sakhalin-9, and not when those two are loaded with dangerous goods. There is no fixed timetable: a ship sails when it is actually ready.
Takes
18-20 hours depending on weather in the Tatar Strait
Fare 2026
Fare tariff is published as a PDF effective 1 January 2026 on SASCO's site; a 2012 Wikivoyage figure of about RUB 15,000 one-way for a standard car is too old to use

SeasonYear-round; no source found on how winter ice affects sailings, only that the crossing time already varies with the weather. BookingNo online booking found. Tickets sold in person or by phone at the two ports: Vanino +7 (42137) 74088, Kholmsk +7 (42433) 20808. A 24-hour hotline (8-800-707-9940) and a Telegram channel (@sakhpasflot) exist for the passenger/vehicle vessel Alexander Deyev. Run bySASCO (Sakhalin Shipping Company), passenger handling contracted to Sanes-Treyd.

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport (Khomutovo, UUS)

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to Moscow, Vladivostok, Khabarovsk and other Russian Far East cities; historically also Seoul, and seasonal China/Japan links

Airport is 8 km south of downtown Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk; city buses 3 and 63 run there, or take a taxi

When
Multiple daily domestic flights on the main Moscow/Vladivostok/Khabarovsk routes; frequency of any international service could not be confirmed for 2026
Takes
Moscow around 8-9 hours, Vladivostok and Khabarovsk under 2 hours (not independently confirmed, typical for the distances)
Fare
No current fare found; ask directly with the carrier

SeasonYear-round, but winter fog and storms cause frequent delays and cancellations (not independently sourced beyond general knowledge of the region). Bookingflyaurora.ru sells tickets online, but the page is a JavaScript app that returns no readable route list to a plain fetch, so current destinations could not be independently confirmed beyond what Wikivoyage lists. Run byAurora Airlines is the island's main carrier; other flights historically Aeroflot group and, pre-2022, Asiana from Seoul.

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to Nogliki, the length of the island's regauged main line

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk railway station, Lenina Square, city centre; ticket office and left-luggage room on site

When

Fare
No current fare found; check the operator's fare page

SeasonYear-round. BookingOnline booking exists at pks.2trvl.ru, linked from the operator's own site; whether it accepts a foreign card was not established. Run byAO Passenger Company Sakhalin (a subsidiary structure tied to Russian Railways).

Not confirmed

What we could not find out

7 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.

  1. 01

Correction to the brief: the island's railway was not regauged 'in 2019'. Russian Wikipedia dates the main-line regauging to completion on 31 July 2020, with the last narrow-gauge stretch (Kholmsk - Chyortov Most) converted in 2021 (https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Сахалинская_железная_дорога, quote 'завершило перевод железнодорожных путей на Сахалине на колею 1520 мм').

  2. 02

Whether a foreigner outside Russia can actually book the Vanino-Kholmsk ferry, the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk-Nogliki train, or any domestic flight was not established. No operator page found states a policy on foreign cards or foreign IP addresses; SASCO's own page names only phone and in-person ticket offices for the ferry, and the rail operator's online booking portal (pks.2trvl.ru) was not tested for payment. Ask directly before assuming either is bookable from outside Russia.

  3. 03

Current frequency of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk-Nogliki train, and of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk city buses to Korsakov and Kholmsk, could not be confirmed for 2026: both pk-sakhalin.ru's schedule search and the historic Wikivoyage bus timetable link (travel.sakh.com/bus) return no readable content to a plain fetch (JavaScript-rendered search, and a dead link respectively). Ask at the station or bus terminal.

  4. 04

Whether any international sailing remains from Korsakov (to anywhere, not only Japan) was not confirmed one way or the other beyond the Wakkanai route being suspended since 2019; no source was found describing any other current international service from the port.

  5. 05

Yakutia Airlines' current Khabarovsk-Okha and Khabarovsk-Nogliki flights (named in the brief) were not independently verified; yakutia.aero was not reachable within this session and the only source is a Wikivoyage line of unknown date.

  6. 06

No source specific to Sakhalin was found describing how sanctions or post-2022 border rules changed what is bookable from outside Russia for any of these services; this should be treated as unconfirmed rather than assumed either way.

  7. 07

flyaurora.ru (Aurora Airlines, the island's main carrier) renders its route list and timetable entirely in JavaScript; a plain fetch returns no readable destinations, fares or schedule, so its current network could not be checked beyond what Wikivoyage names.

What the planner can route today

The options above live on the place page, not in the departure board: a boat that comes when you phone has no time to show. What the board can do for Sakhalin is this.
