Mestia and Upper Svaneti

A marshrutka up from Zugdidi is the backbone; a shared jeep on to Ushguli, a lift for the ski slopes, and closures on the Lentekhi side decide the rest.

How transport works here

10 ways of moving, each with its rule

We confirmed nine ways of moving to, from or around Mestia: three by road, one by air, one hired or on demand, two under your own steam and two by rail and cable, from 14 sources. One entry is not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. Four of them run only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be.

The fares were seen in 2022 to 2025; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. Three fares carry no year, because they could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 4 of the 10 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 28 September 2026, and ends with six things we could not confirm.

Not confirmed

What we could not find out

6 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.

  1. 01

The brief named the airport's operator as Vanilla Sky. Both names are in the sources and an earlier draft of this entry wrongly said none mentioned Vanilla Sky: Wikivoyage's Northwestern Georgia article says the flights are operated by Serviceair, while the Mestia article lists Vanilla Sky (vanillasky.ge, +995 32 242 7427) as where reservations are made. Which of the two currently sells and which flies was not established, and neither booking channel could be confirmed live; ask a Tbilisi travel agent or either company whether the Natakhtari and Kutaisi routes are selling.

  2. 02

Kutaisi's Rioni-station rail-plus-marshrutka combination to reach the Zugdidi train is mentioned by Wikivoyage but no current fare or schedule beyond '12 lari from Rioni' could be confirmed.

  3. 03

The Latpari and Zagari passes toward Lentekhi and Racha as a summer-only 4x4 route could not be confirmed from any reachable source; only the lower Lentekhi-side road closures (Sagdari/Lasdili) were found in the Roads Department data. Ask a Mestia guesthouse or a 4x4 tour operator about current pass conditions.

  4. 04

Georgian Railway's ticket-search endpoint (gr.com.ge/api/ticket-search) is reachable with the --resolve pin and the stations endpoint returned Zugdidi (station_code 57290), but ticket-search rejected every request format tried here without returning fares; the wikivoyage-sourced 16 lari Tbilisi-Zugdidi fare is 2024-dated and unconfirmed for 2026.

  5. 05

No current Mestia-Batumi direct marshrutka was found in any source; only Batumi-Zugdidi-Kutaisi services are documented. Ask at Mestia's ticket office whether a direct Batumi run exists.

  6. 06

Ski season shared-taxi fares for Hatsvali and Tetnuldi are dated 2022; no 2025/2026 update was found.
