Lalibela

Almost everyone now arrives in Lalibela by air: Ethiopian Airlines flies in daily from Addis Ababa and most days from Gondar, and if you flew into Ethiopia on Ethiopian the domestic fare drops by half or more. The airport is about 20-23 km out and shared minibuses and hotel vehicles meet the flights. The roads in from Weldiya, Gashena and Dessie still carry dawn buses and minibuses, but Amhara has been in conflict since spring 2023, every western advisory says do not travel there, and one 2024 journey counted 25 checkpoints on the 310 km from Kombolcha. In town it is walking and bajaj; the outlying churches mean a hired vehicle, a mule or a long hike.

The place

Lalibela is a town in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Located in the Lasta district and North Wollo Zone, it is a tourist site for its famous rock-cut monolithic churches designed in contrast to the earlier monolithic churches in Ethiopia. The whole of Lalibela is a large and important site for the antiquity, medieval, and post-medieval civilization of Ethiopia. To some Christians, Lalibela is one of Ethiopia's holiest cities, and a center of pilgrimage.

How transport works here

8 ways of moving, each with its rule

We confirmed eight ways of moving to, from or around Lalibela: one by air, three by road, three hired or on demand and one under your own steam, from 31 sources. Two of them run only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. One needs a phone call or a message before you turn up.

The fares were seen in 0 to 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. Two fares carry no year, because they could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 1 of the 8 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 22 September 2026, and ends with ten things we could not confirm.

01
scheduled flight

Ethiopian Airlines to Lalibela Airport (LLI)

Addis Ababa Bole (ADD) to Lalibela (LLI) as ET120, returning as ET121; Gondar (GDQ) to Lalibela as ET122, returning as ET123

Book on ethiopianairlines.com or at any Ethiopian Airlines town office; Lalibela's office is by the Aman Hotel near the Dashen Bank ATM. If you flew into Ethiopia with Ethiopian, say so and carry the international ticket or reservation, because the domestic fare drops sharply. The discount is easiest to get at a ticket office rather than online. Flights are often overbooked, so reconfirm a day ahead and arrive early. Lalibela is one of Ethiopian's 25 domestic destinations.

When
Daily from Addis Ababa; Gondar connections usually about five days a week. In late September 2026 the live board showed ET120 arriving 13:05 and ET121 leaving 13:35 for Addis, with ET122 in from Gondar at 10:25 and ET123 back out at 10:55.
Takes
About 1h 15m from Addis Ababa
Fare 2026
No published fare. A one-way domestic ticket averages about US$100 at the full price; travellers who flew into Ethiopia with Ethiopian report a discount of 50 to 60 percent off that.

SeasonYear-round, but schedules change at short notice and services across northern Ethiopia have been suspended before. Ethiopian cancelled Lalibela, Dessie, Bahir Dar and Gondar flights in August 2023 and only restored Bahir Dar and Gondar immediately. Bookingethiopianairlines.com, the Ethiopian app, or a town ticket office; book the discounted domestic fare in person if the website will not apply it. Run byEthiopian Airlines.

02
minibus

Shared minibus from Lalibela Airport into town

Lalibela Airport (11.9739, 38.9911) to Lalibela town, on the asphalt road that climbs the escarpment

The minibuses and hotel vehicles wait outside the terminal and fill up as each flight lands; there is nothing else out there, so do not walk off. Ask for the town or name your hotel. Most hotels will send a car if you tell them your flight, which is the simpler option and often the same money if there are two of you. Going out to the airport, arrange the pickup the night before through your hotel, because there is no scheduled service from town.

When
Meets each arriving flight; nothing between flights
Takes
About 30 minutes
Fare 2019
100 birr per person was the shared minibus fare recorded in May 2019; expect considerably more now after several years of birr devaluationSeen in 2019: a floor, not a price.

SeasonYear-round; the road is asphalt but parts are in poor condition. Bookingnone for the shared minibus; book a hotel transfer in advance if you want certainty. Run byprivate minibus owner-drivers and hotel vehicles.

03
bus

Long-distance coach from Addis Ababa, overnighting at Dessie

Addis Ababa (Meskel Square company stalls) north on Road 1 through Debre Birhan, Dessie and Weldiya, then west to Lalibela

Buy at the bus company stalls on Meskel Square in Addis a day or two ahead; you cannot book online, and the men who approach you claiming to work for a company are touts. Selam and Sky Bus are the usual coach names on the northern routes. The run to Lalibela is a two-day journey with a night in Dessie; the bus passes through Weldiya mid-morning and will pick up there if it has room. Southbound it leaves Lalibela at 06:00.

When
One a day each way; coaches leave Addis around 04:00 to 06:00 and Lalibela at 06:00. Buses do not run after dark.
Takes
Two days with an overnight stop
Fare 2015
No current fare found. Comparable Addis to Gondar coach fares were 420-435 birr in 2014-2015, which is long out of date.Seen in 2015: a floor, not a price.

SeasonYear-round in principle. The northern highland rains run mid-June to mid-September and the unsealed section from Gashena gets slow and slippery. Bookingin person at Meskel Square in Addis, or through a hotel; phone booking means depositing at a bank and is a headache. Run bySelam Bus, Sky Bus and other Higer coach operators.

04
minibus

Local buses and minibuses from Weldiya, Gashena and Dessie

Weldiya (Woldia) to Lalibela direct; or any Weldiya to Bahir Dar bus as far as the Gashena junction, then a Gashena to Lalibela bus for the last 1-2 hours

Lalibela's bus station is on the east side of town, downhill from the centre, on the road towards the airport. Stations open around 05:00 and the chaos peaks before dawn, so arrive at 05:00 and claim a seat before worrying about luggage. Coming from the west, you change at Gashena: the Weldiya to Bahir Dar bus passes there around 10:00 and the last Lalibela bus leaves Gashena around 15:00. There are usually two afternoon buses Gashena to Lalibela.

When
A daily bus from Weldiya leaving at dawn; two afternoon buses from Gashena; Dessie connections go via Weldiya
Takes
Gashena to Lalibela 1-2 hours depending on traffic and weather; Weldiya to Lalibela most of a morning; Dessie to Weldiya about 120 km
Fare
No reliable current fare found. Everyone must have a seat by law, which makes boarding mid-route hard, and conductors will try to charge extra for luggage.Seen in 0: a floor, not a price.

SeasonYear-round, but the Gashena road is unsealed except the last stretch and suffers in the mid-June to mid-September rains. Bookingbuy from the conductor at the station on the day, or from the window the afternoon before. Run byHiger buses and Toyota Hiace minibuses run by private owners.

05
tuk tuk

Bajaj (tuk-tuk) around town

Anywhere in Lalibela town, and out to Neakutoleab monastery about 4 km south

Flag one on the main street; they queue near the market and the bus station. Unlike bigger Ethiopian towns there are no blue and white shared minibuses on fixed routes here, so the bajaj is the only ride in town. Lalibela is steep and the streets are part cobble, part dirt, so a bajaj between the upper town and the churches saves real effort. Agree the price before you get in. Neakutoleab, the cave church outside town, is a bajaj ride plus a short walk.

When
All day, on demand
Takes
A few minutes across town; about 15 minutes out to Neakutoleab
Fare 2019
About 25 birr per person with a 50 birr minimum to hire one around town, recorded before 2020; well out of date, so negotiate locallySeen in 2019: a floor, not a price.

SeasonYear-round. Bookingnone, agree the fare with the driver first. Run byprivate bajaj owner-drivers.

06
private hire

Car and driver from Bahir Dar or Gondar

Bahir Dar or Gondar east on sealed road to Gashena, then the unsealed road north to Lalibela

Arranged through a hotel or a tour company in Bahir Dar or Gondar rather than at a rank. Roads are asphalt from Bahir Dar and Gondar as far as Gashena and from Weldiya in the east; the last stretch into Lalibela is unsealed except from the airport into town. Nearly all hire in Ethiopia comes with a driver, and a driver-guide is usually no dearer than self-drive. Check the driver's tourism licence and insurance before agreeing.

When
On demand
Takes
About 7-8 hours from Bahir Dar, 10-11 hours from Gondar
Fare 2018
2,000-4,000 birr depending on the negotiation, location and driver, as recorded before 2020; self-drive SUVs were about US$100 a day in 2018Seen in 2018: a floor, not a price.

SeasonAvoid the mid-June to mid-September rains on the unsealed Gashena section. Do not drive at night: buses do not, and attacks on the A3 usually happen in the early hours when visibility is poor. Bookingthrough a hotel or an Addis or Bahir Dar tour operator, a day or more ahead. Run bylocal drivers and Ethiopian tour operators.

offroad 4x4

Hired vehicle to the outlying churches at Bilbala and Yemrehanna Krestos

Lalibela north to Bilbala village for Bilbala Cherkos and Bilbala Giyorgis, and on to Yemrehanna Krestos in its cave

Hired through a hotel, the tourist office or a tour operator as a half or full day with a driver and a guide; there is no public transport out there and the tracks need a sturdy vehicle. Bilbala Cherkos hides just beyond a small wood off the road; Bilbala Giyorgis and Yemrehanna Krestos add a longer and tougher hike from where the vehicle stops. Whether you can go at all depends on the security situation on the day, so ask your hotel or operator the morning you plan to travel.

When
On demand, daylight only
Takes
Half a day for Bilbala; a full day including the hike to Yemrehanna Krestos
Fare
No reliable current fare found. Negotiate a day rate with the driver and confirm whether the church entry fees and the guide are included.Seen in 0: a floor, not a price.

SeasonDry season only in practice. The mid-June to mid-September rains make the tracks difficult, and access is security dependent year-round. Bookingthrough a hotel, the tourist office or an Ethiopian operator, arranged the day before. Run bylocal drivers and Lalibela tour operators.

mule

Mule and guide up to Asheton Maryam

Lalibela town up the escarpment to Asheton Maryam monastery (12.0168, 39.0718), about 3,150 m, and on to Hudad Lodge

Arranged through the tourist office, your hotel or a licensed guide in town; mules and handlers wait where the track steepens. There is a carpark partway up, then a steep final walking track with a sign giving the monastery fees at its start. It can be reached by road or on foot. The full circuit taking in Hudad Lodge is a long day's walk and the route is not always obvious, so take a guide. Church guides licensed for the eleven rock-hewn churches are a separate ticket from federally licensed guides, who cannot take you inside them.

When
Daily, on demand, best started at first light
Takes
Two to three hours up on foot; a couple of hours more on to Hudad Lodge; a full day for the round trip
Fare 2020
No current mule rate found. Licensed church guides were 200 birr a day from the Lalibela tourist office pre-2020, and the Mount Abuna Yosef multi-day trek was quoted at roughly US$100 a day for two people all inclusive.Seen in 2020: a floor, not a price.

SeasonBest October to March. Avoid the mid-June to mid-September rains; Lalibela sits at 2,600 m so start early and carry water. Bookingthrough the Lalibela tourist office, your hotel or a licensed guide the day before. Run bylocal muleteers and licensed guides, booked through the tourist office or hotels.

What we could not find out

10 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.

  1. 01

Security is the single biggest caveat on this file and it overrides the practical detail. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to all of Amhara regional state, citing conflict between Fano militia and the authorities since spring 2023, heavily restricted movement, a risk of arbitrary detention, armed attacks on vehicles on the Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar A3 road, and closures and extra checkpoints by the ENDF. It also warns that flights across northern Ethiopia can be suspended at short notice. Sources: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/ethiopia/regional-risks and https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/ethiopia/safety-and-security

  2. 02

What the road actually feels like, from a 2024 first-hand account: 'No less than 25 security checkpoints are dotted on the 310-kilometer road' from Kombolcha to Lalibela, manned by federal troops, regional militia and police. A passenger was taken off a Dessie to Weldiya bus over three pairs of shoes and no permit. Weldiya had a 18:30 curfew. Trucks were being rerouted via Afar rather than Debre Birhan. Source: https://www.thereporterethiopia.com/39422/

  3. 03

Road closures continued into late 2025: Mekane Selam to Merto Le-Mariam closed since March 2025, Adet to Mota to Bichena closed since early July, and the Bahir Dar to Debre Markos highway blocked by Fano for several days in August. Source: https://www.thereporterethiopia.com/47507/

  4. 04

An Ethiopian operator's own security note, dated 25 September 2025, says of Amhara: 'making road travel across the region very risky' but 'some places can safely be reached by local flight'. That matches what the data shows: flights to Lalibela were running normally in September 2026 while the roads were not recommended. Source: https://www.tesfatours.com/security-update-details/conflict-with-amhara-forces

  5. 05

Airport distance is inconsistent across sources. The brief says 25 km, Wikipedia says 23 km southwest, Tesfa Tours says 20 km and Wikivoyage says 19 km. Treat it as roughly 20-23 km and about 30 minutes.

  6. 06

The size of the Ethiopian Airlines domestic discount is not published anywhere on ethiopianairlines.com; the domestic network page, the Lalibela route page and the deals pages were all checked and none mention it. Wikivoyage says 60 percent, a widely read Ethiopia guide last updated August 2026 says 50 percent. Wikivoyage also says the discount can be obtained by holding any Ethiopian international ticket or reservation, flown or not, and that you will often be asked to show it. Booking at a town office is more reliable than the website, where the claim checkbox comes and goes.

  7. 07

No current birr fares could be confirmed for the airport minibus, the bajaj, the Weldiya and Gashena buses, the Addis coaches, the mules to Asheton Maryam or the 4x4 to Yemrehanna Krestos. Every birr figure in this file predates 2020 and the birr has devalued heavily since, so they are order-of-magnitude only. Selam Bus and Sky Bus have no reachable public websites (selambus.com and skybus.et both failed to resolve), Wikivoyage links Selam only to a dormant WordPress page, and there is no online booking for Ethiopian intercity coaches.

  8. 08

Mules specifically: no source was found giving a mule hire rate for Asheton Maryam or Yemrehanna Krestos. Wikivoyage and Tesfa Tours both describe Asheton Maryam as reachable by road or on foot without mentioning mules at all. Ask at the Lalibela tourist office on arrival.

  9. 09

Festival crowding is real but the dates need care. Gena, Ethiopian Christmas, is 7 January and is the biggest day in Lalibela because King Lalibela's birthday falls on it. Timkat is 18-20 January per Tesfa Tours and 19 January per Wikivoyage and the FCDO. Sebreatsemu Giyorgis on 26 January and Senay Mikael on 19 June are also major here. Wikivoyage warns Lalibela gets packed and hotels raise prices sharply during festivals. The FCDO separately notes large crowds on those dates as a terrorism risk. Sources: https://www.tesfatours.com/package/visit-iconic-lalibela and https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Lalibela

  10. 10

Rainy season: the northern highlands rains run roughly mid-June to mid-September and this is where it rains most in Ethiopia. That is also Lalibela's hotel low season, when quoted room rates are lowest. Sources: https://againstthecompass.com/en/travel-ethiopia/ and https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Lalibela
