Gokarna
Trains stop at Gokarna Road 8–9 km out and buses at the town stand; the four beaches south of town are linked by a cliff footpath and, in season, by open boats that run only when enough people want the same direction.

Gokarna is a historical temple town located in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka state in southern India, The town is famous for the 4th century Mahabaleshwar Temple, dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva, the Bhadrakali Temple dedicated to Goddess Uma and Maha Ganpati Temple dedicated to Hindu God Ganesha. Gokarna is mentioned in the Hindu epic Mahabharata and by the classical Sanskrit poet Kalidasa in his 4th-century work Raghuvamsha, where he refers to the "Lord of Gokarna".

7 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed seven ways of moving to, from or around Gokarna: one by water, two under your own steam, two hired or on demand and two by road, from 14 sources. Two of them run only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be.
The fares were seen in 2023 to 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. One fare carries no year, because it could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 3 of the 7 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 21 September 2026, and ends with ten things we could not confirm.
By water
Shared beach boats between Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise
Om Beach and Kudle Beach south to Half Moon Beach and Paradise Beach, and back
Boatmen wait on the sand at the northern end of Om Beach near the road head, and on Kudle. Say which beach you want and they will hold you until others are going the same way. There is no jetty; you wade and climb in.
- When
- Daytime only in high season, roughly November to February and into March. No schedule: the boat leaves when several people are going in the same direction
- Takes
- 10–15 minutes Om to Half Moon; Kudle to Paradise a little longer
- Fare 2025
- ₹100 a head for a shared hop, ₹150 for a longer one such as Kudle to Paradise. If there are too few passengers you will be asked ₹200–250 to go anyway. Chartering the whole boat runs about ₹400 for a return to Paradise with an hour there. Wikivoyage lists the Paradise boat fee as ₹150–175 from Gokarna and ₹100 from Om
SeasonHigh season only, and daylight only, with boats generally stopping around 17:30–18:00. Uttara Kannada district banned boating and sea tourism from 1 June to 31 August in its 2026 monsoon order. BookingNone, pay the boatman. Agree the price and whether it is per head or per boat before boarding. Run bylocal fishing-boat owners working off Om and Kudle.
On foot, by bike, or otherwise
The cliff path between the beaches
Gokarna main beach to Kudle to Om to Half Moon to Paradise, each leg about 20 minutes
From the south end of Gokarna main beach a narrow path climbs past a Rama temple with a spring, crosses a flat cricket field and drops to Kudle. From the south end of Kudle a path climbs to a pitched road; go straight across instead and follow the white arrows painted on the rocks to Om. From the south end of Om the path rounds a hillock, then forks: right for the coast route, left for the forest route, both ending at Half Moon.
- When
- Any time in daylight
- Takes
- About 20 minutes per leg; roughly 1 hour 20 minutes end to end from town to Paradise
- Fare 2026
- Free
SeasonNot advisable in the monsoon, when the path is treacherous. Early in the season the bushes are thorny and the trail is poorly cleared. Run bynone.
Scooter and bicycle hire
Local use around Gokarna town, the Om Beach road and out to Kumta or Murudeshwar
Rental shops cluster around the bus stand and the main temple road, and several will deliver to guesthouses on the Kudle cliff. Bicycles are also rented in town. A permanent two-wheeler licence is required; learner permits are refused.
- When
- Daily hire
- Takes
- Per 24 hours
- Fare 2025
- Scooters advertised from about ₹299 a day, with ₹400–600 typical and ₹499 quoted by one aggregator; one traveller paid ₹500 for 24 hours

- Meets arriving trains; sparse between trains
- Takes
- 15–20 minutes to town
- Fare 2023
- Rickshaw ₹120–200, taxi ₹250, per Wikivoyage's station entry last edited January 2023. One traveller paid about ₹250 to a hostel. Autos to Karwar-bound connections are quoted ₹100–130Seen in 2023: a floor, not a price.

Town to beach auto-rickshaws
Gokarna bus stand and town to Kudle Beach and Om Beach by road
Autos wait at the bus stand and along the main temple road. Only Gokarna and Om beaches are reachable by road; the road to Om winds inland and is much longer than the coast path. Drivers parked at Om quote high to go back to town, so bargain or walk out to the road and flag a passing one.
- When
- On demand through the day; thin after dark
- Takes
- About 15 minutes to Kudle, a little more to Om
- Fare 2025
- ₹80–100 to Kudle and ₹200–250 to Om after bargaining; sharing with others brings the Om ride down to ₹50–100 a head. Wikivoyage's Om Beach entry gives ₹200 from town
SeasonYear-round. Run byprivate auto drivers.
By road
Local buses from the highway to Gokarna town
Kumta – Gokarna – Kumta and Ankola – Gokarna services, both passing the junction 1 km from Gokarna Road station
Leaving the station turn right and follow Railway Station Road for about 900 m to 1 km, roughly a 15-minute walk, until you reach the main Gokarna Road. There is a bus shelter across the street at the intersection, near a small temple. Flag the Gokarna bus. Coming from the north, get off long-distance buses at Madangeri junction, 12 km from the temple, and pick up a local bus there.
- When
- Frequent; the Ankola service runs roughly every 30 minutes and waits at the junction were reported at under 5 minutes

- About 20 minutes from the junction to Gokarna town
- Fare 2023
- ₹10 from the junction; ₹10–15 from Kumta (35 km) or Ankola (20 km)Seen in 2023: a floor, not a price.

Long-distance buses to Goa, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hampi
Gokarna to Panaji, Madgaon and Canacona; to Bengaluru; to Mangaluru and Mumbai; to Hospet for Hampi
Buy tickets at any of the travel agencies in town. Private coaches do not use the KSRTC stand: they leave from Check Post, five minutes' walk from the bus stand on the wider part of Gokarna Road. Coming from Goa without a through bus, take a local bus from Madgaon or Canacona to Karwar and change there for Gokarna. Some Mumbai and Mangaluru coaches only drop at Madangeri junction, 12 km out.
- When
- From Bengaluru, 1 to 4 KSRTC services a day depending on the day of the week, plus private operators. Goa and Hampi/Hospet overnights are sold by private lines through agents. Departure times and fares are published only on booking aggregators that blocked every request, so check on the day you book
- Takes
- Goa about 4 hours 20 minutes; Bengaluru 10–12 hours overnight; Hospet about 7 hours
- Fare
- Not confirmed. The aggregator pages carrying the fare bands could not be opened, and no operator or KSRTC page found publishes a Gokarna fare. Ask a travel agent in town or check ksrtc.in on the day
SeasonYear-round. BookingTravel agents in Gokarna, or redBus, AbhiBus, Goibibo, Yatra; KSRTC at ksrtc.in. Run byKSRTC and NWKRTC; Canara Pinto runs a private service dropping at Madangeri junction. Other private lines are sold locally but were not confirmed on this route.
What we could not find out
10 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
Beach boat fares are quoted across a wide band, ₹100 to ₹500 a head depending on the source, and none of the current figures come from an operator. Ask two boatmen before agreeing, and settle whether the quote is per person or per boat.
- 02
Boat operating hours are not published anywhere. Reports of a last boat at 17:30–18:00 come from review sites rather than an operator or the port authority.
- 03
Whether boats to Paradise Beach run at all in the current season is disputed: some 2025 and 2026 pages say there is no boat service to Paradise and only the trek from Half Moon, others describe boats arriving there. Check locally.
- 04
The exact scope of the Uttara Kannada monsoon order for small passenger boats off Gokarna is unclear. The 2026 order names sea tourism and water sports; it does not spell out beach-to-beach ferrying. Assume nothing runs 1 June to 31 August.
- 05
No share taxi with per-seat pricing was found for Goa airport or Karwar to Gokarna. Only whole-cab quotes of ₹3,900–4,400 appear. Hostels in Gokarna may pool passengers; ask them.
- 06
No source found on overnight-stay restrictions at Paradise or Half Moon beaches, which would change whether a last boat matters.
- 07
Long-distance bus fares and departure times could not be confirmed. Yatra, Goibibo and redBus all refused automated requests on every attempt, and no fare band from them is claimed here. Karnataka's own ksrtc.in is the source to check.
- 08
Of the private operator names travellers are given locally - Sea Bird Tourist, Sugama Tourist, Paulo Travels, VRL - only Canara Pinto is confirmed by a reachable source as serving Gokarna. The others may well run; nothing found says so.
- 09
Whether mechanised fishing is separately banned off this coast in the monsoon, which would affect who has a boat to hire in June and July, could not be sourced. The district tourism order that was found covers water sports and boating only.
- 10
Hitching customs around Gokarna are undocumented in the sources checked. Hitchwiki was not reachable.
What the planner can route today
The options above live on the place page, not in the departure board: a boat that comes when you phone has no time to show. What the board can do for Gokarna is this.
