Nelliyampathy
A plantation hill settlement above Nenmara reached by one ghat road with about ten hairpin bends; a handful of short-wheelbase KSRTC buses climb it, everything else on the hill is jeeps hired at Pulayanpara or booked at the Kaikatty forest check post, and a weekend KSRTC day tour doubles as the cheapest way up and back.

7 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed six ways of moving to, from or around Nelliyampathy: three by road and three hired or on demand, from 26 sources. One entry is not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. One of them runs only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. Two need a phone call or a message before you turn up.
The fares were seen in 2022 to 2025; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. Three fares carry no year, because they could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate none high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 21 September 2026, and ends with ten things we could not confirm.
By road
KSRTC short-wheelbase bus Palakkad – Nenmara – Nelliyampathy – Pothupara (schedule RNC 673)
Palakkad – Pudunagaram – Kollengode – Nenmara – Pothundi Dam – Kaikatty – Pulayanpara – Nelliyampathy – Manalaroo (AVT) – Lilly – Pothupara
Leaves Palakkad KSRTC bus stand; far more services only run as far as Nenmara, so check the board says Nelliyampathy or Pothupara. Palakkad depot runs short-wheelbase ordinary buses on this route because of the hairpins. Coming back down, board at Noorady junction in Nelliyampathy, where all buses start; they fill fast and you will not get a seat further along.
- When
- Palakkad departures 05:00 and 06:45; from Nenmara 06:15, 08:30, 11:00 and 13:30; back from Nelliyampathy 09:00, 11:20, 14:15 and 16:15, of which only 14:15 and 16:15 run through to Palakkad – the other two turn at Nenmara. Wikivoyage's older list of departures from Noorady junction reads 08:45, 09:45, 11:00, 14:00 and 17:45
- Takes
- about 3 hours for 70 km from Palakkad; about 1 hour Nenmara to Nelliyampathy
- Fare 2022
- ₹96 Palakkad to NelliyampathySeen in 2022: a floor, not a price.
Seasonyear-round, but the ghat is slippery after heavy rain in June–September. Bookingnone, pay the conductor. Run byKerala State Road Transport Corporation, Palakkad depot (enquiry 0491 2520098).

Noorady junction out to Karady, Lilly, Victoria, Karappara, Kaikatty and Pulayanpara
All of them start at Noorady junction in Nelliyampathy and run down to Pulayam Para first. Buses to Karappara pick up Karady and Lilly on the way; buses to Pulayanpara pick up Kaikatty. There is no printed timetable, so ask at the junction.

Jeeps for hire at Pulayanpara junction
Pulayanpara and Kaikatty out to Seetharkundu, Kesavanpara, Mampara and the estate roads
Pulayanpara junction, about 2 km past Kaikatty, is where the local jeeps stand. There is an off-road jeep and taxi service working out of the junction on Kaikatty Road. Hiring on the hill is cheaper than bringing a taxi up from Nenmara.
- When
- on demand through daylight hours
- Takes
- Seetharkundu is about 5 km from Pulayanpara; Mampara needs four-wheel drive
- Fare
- one source quotes about ₹200 for a one-way lift up from Nenmara and ₹400–₹500 for a local return trip, but that page carries no date – treat it as indicative only
Seasonyear-round; forest tracks past Kaikatty close in heavy rain. Bookingturn up at the junction and negotiate before you get in. Run bylocal jeep owner-drivers.

Resort and homestay jeep transfer from the parking point
Nelliyampathy town or the check post area out to plantation and forest properties, often 3–15 km of unsurfaced track
Most properties off the main road will not let an ordinary car in. Tell them your arrival time and they send a jeep to the agreed parking spot; several ask guests to leave the car at their town office.
- When
- arranged per guest arrival
- Takes
- about 30 minutes for the 15 km to the deeper forest properties
- Fare
- usually folded into the room rate; not separately published
Seasonyear-round, but arrange a daylight arrival. Bookingconfirm the transfer when you book the room, with a phone number for the driver. Run byindividual resorts and homestays.
Rules, permits and closures
Kaikatty forest check post – the gate everything passes through
Kaikatty, the first point at the top of the hairpins, about 25 km above Nenmara
Every vehicle going up stops here. Registration is taken, forest permission for the inner zones is issued here, and the Forest IB office beside it books the jeep safaris.
- When
- opens early morning; general sightseeing hours on the hill are quoted as 06:00–18:00
- Takes
- a few minutes at the barrier
- Fare 2025
- ₹50 per person is quoted as the forest entry fee on the Seethargundu forest walk; the same page's own FAQ says forest entry is free, and the main viewpoints are free
Seasonyear-round; night movement inside is barred. Bookingno advance permit for the main viewpoints; inner zones need permission taken at the post. Run byKerala Forest Department, Nemmara side.
What we could not find out
10 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
Sources disagree on the check post night cut-off: one 2025 guide says entry is restricted after 18:00, a 2023 trip report says no vehicles after 19:00. Confirm by phone with the Nemmara forest range before a late arrival.
- 02
The same 2025 guide quotes ₹50 per person forest entry on one activity and says forest entry is free in its FAQ. Expect to pay at the Kaikatty post for the inner zones and nothing for the main viewpoints, but ask.
- 03
Several tourism pages state there is no public bus to the hilltop at all, which contradicts the KSRTC Palakkad – Nelliyampathy – Pothupara schedule and Wikivoyage's list of departures from Noorady junction. The service is real but thin and may be curtailed; check at Palakkad or Nenmara depot on the day.
- 04
The Noorady junction departure times from Wikivoyage date to 2015 and do not match the 2022 KSRTC return times. No current on-the-ground list was found.
- 05
The ₹96 Palakkad – Nelliyampathy fare is from a 2022 listing and KSRTC has revised ordinary fares since; treat it as a floor.
- 06
A Kerala Kaumudi report of a KSRTC bus overturning at Pothundy on a wet descent, previously cited here for the season note, now returns HTTP 410 Gone. The ghat is genuinely slippery in the monsoon, but that specific incident can no longer be checked and has been dropped.
- 07
Jeep hire rates at Pulayanpara come from an undated page, so no fare year can be recorded. Expect to negotiate at the junction.
- 08
No evidence found of share autos or share jeeps operating on a fixed route up the ghat from Nenmara; the only documented fixed-route transport up the hill is the KSRTC bus.
- 09
Auto-rickshaws on the hill were described as very expensive because of few passengers, but the only figures (₹100 short hops, ₹400 short excursions) are from a 2015 Wikivoyage edit and are not usable as current fares.
- 10
Nothing found on hitching customs, or on whether estate vehicles carry passengers up the ghat.
What the planner can route today
The options above live on the place page, not in the departure board: a boat that comes when you phone has no time to show. What the board can do for Nelliyampathy is this.
