Ümraniye

Ümraniye is a municipality and district of Istanbul Province, Turkey.

Its area is 46 km2, and its population is 723,760 (2023). It was separated from Üsküdar in 1987. It is bordered by Çekmeköy to the northeast, Sancaktepe to the east, Ataşehir to the south, Üsküdar to the west, and Beykoz to the northwest.

    Sabiha Gökçen Airport

    This has many domestic and international flights and is more convenient for the east of the city, and less congested.

    Pendik Train Station

    High speed YHT trains from Istanbul stop at Pendik on their way east to Eskişehir, where the track forks for Ankara or Konya.

    Dudullu Bus Terminal

    This has good connections to all parts of Turkey, as many long-distance coaches start at Anadolu Otogar, circle the city, then call at Dudullu before continuing east.

    Damatris is better known as Demeter, Grecian god of agriculture and fertility, and this hunting lodge - cum - country palace was built for Tiberius II Constantine (ruled 578-582 AD).

    A multi-purpose arena for sports and concerts, owned by Fenerbahçe and home court of their basketball team.

Where to eat

Inexpensive çiğ köfte, döner, fish & bread, kokoreç, patso and fast food shops are found everywhere. The AVMs - shopping centres - all have a range of eating places. On the seafront, carts sell corn and simit and tavuk & pilav (rice with chicken). City-run restaurants such as Sosyal Tesis or Kent Lokantası also serve affordable meals.

Getting around Ümraniye the local way

  • Get inFerries from Üsküdar and Kadıköy on the Asian Side dock at Beşiktaş quay and several others along the coast.
  • Go nextFrequent buses and minibuses run from Sarıyer into the countryside north of the city.
  • Go nextAnadolu Kavağı: take a ferry from Sarıyer to this pleasant village across the strait on the Asian coast, crowned by Yoros Castle on the hilltop, with views north over the Black Sea.
