Islands of Uganda

Ssese Islands

The Ssese Islands are an archipelago of eighty-four islands in the northwestern part of Lake Victoria in Uganda.

The islands are coterminous with the Kalangala District in southern Central Uganda, which does not have any territory on mainland Uganda.

Get in

Getting to Ssese Islands

There are two large ferries serving Buggala Island. One, a modern passenger/car ferry, runs daily between the Nakiwogo dock just south of Entebbe and Kalangala Bay. The ferry departs from Kalangala for Nakiwogo at 08:00 daily, and returns leaving Nakiwogo at 14:00 daily. The journey takes about 3½ hours, and there is a snack bar on the ferry.

See

Worth seeing

Buggala Island is large enough to have diverse terrains. It is hilly. From the tops of the hills, though, the views are stunning. Most of the southern stem of the L is dominated by palm oil plantations, which dominate the landscape somewhat repetitively. Along the southern end near Mulabana, there is a swamp that contains hippos.

Do

Things to do

Mostly, people just sit along the beach and stare at the tranquil surroundings. On weekend nights, there is a bit of a party scene along Kalangala Bay, though the atmosphere is mostly relaxed. Bicycles can be rented in Kalangala Town. It is a full day trip from there to Mutambala (with time to spend on the beach in between), and an athletic dusk-to-dawn trip, or an overnight trip, to Mulabana and back.

Eat

Where to eat

The hotels along Kalangala Bay have acceptable Ugandan fare, and plenty to drink. It is quite possible to eat and drink at one hotel and stay at another. On the other islands, visitors will generally need to bring some or all of their own food.

How locals move

Getting around Ssese Islands the local way

Buggala Island is reached by one of three government or PPP ferries whose reliability changes year to year, or by the free Bukakata-Luku vehicle ferry treated as a public road; the outer islands are reached only by wooden lake taxi or fishing boat, and the straight-line closeness to Entebbe means almost nothing once the lake decides otherwise.

  1. 01
Bukakata (Luku) to Bugoma free vehicle ferryferry

Bukakata landing site, Masaka District, to Bugoma landing site on Buggala Island, Kalangala

    Where
Bukakata is 39 km east of Masaka town off the main Masaka-Kampala road. The government treats this crossing as a public road: since a 2009 concession with Kalangala Infrastructure Services (KIS) Ltd, Kampala pays an annual subsidy so passengers and vehicles cross free. Drive or take transport to Bukakata landing and drive straight onto the pontoon.
    When
Multiple sailings a day; Wikivoyage records four round trips (leaving Bukakata 08:00, 11:30, 13:30, 16:00), though this figure is old and unconfirmed against a current KIS timetable
    Fare (2025)
Free to passengers and vehicles under the government subsidy as of the 2025 reporting below; the operator has warned it may revert to charging around UGX 8,000 per passenger and UGX 30,000-100,000 per vehicle if the subsidy is not renewed
    Takes
Roughly 30-45 minutes for the crossing itself
    Season
Year-round; the concession itself has repeatedly come close to lapsing rather than the sailing being seasonal
    Booking
    None, drive on

  2. 02
The Bukakata-Luku free-crossing subsidy is not guaranteedservice status

Bukakata-Bugoma crossing, and Kalangala District generally

    Where
Not a vehicle: whether the ferry above stays free depends on whether central government pays its side of the concession on time. Kalangala's district leadership has said the operator threatened to start charging when the subsidy fell behind; central government has since paid, but the arrangement is renewed rather than permanent. Ask locally, or at the Kalangala District Local Government offices, whether the free crossing is currently in force before you plan on it as a certainty.

  3. 03
MV Kalangala, Nakiwogo (Entebbe) to Kalangala Bayferry

Nakiwogo landing site, about 4 km southwest of Entebbe, to Kalangala Bay on Buggala Island

    Where
Nakiwogo is reachable by taxi or boda-boda from Entebbe town; there is sometimes a minibus. This is the historic government car-and-passenger ferry and the most direct route from the capital area, but its record for reliability is poor: Google News search results (titles only, article text not accessible in this pass because monitor.co.ug and chimpreports.com refused every fetch attempted, including over HTTP/1.1 with a browser user agent) show repeated suspensions for maintenance and breakdowns stretching from at least 2018 through a December 2025 headline describing it as grounded and costing island businesses custom over the festive season. Confirm sailing status locally or with Kalangala District before relying on it.
    When
Historically one round trip a day (Wikivoyage records an 08:00 departure from Kalangala and a 14:00 return from Nakiwogo), but this schedule predates the vessel's recent grounding history and should not be trusted without local confirmation
    Fare (2017)
Historic fare on Wikivoyage was USh 10,000 second class and USh 14,000 first class; undated beyond the page's own 2017 edit and not reconfirmed here
    Takes
    About 3.5 hours
    Season
Year-round when running; frequently out of service for maintenance or breakdown
    Booking
None reported; pay at the dock

MV Kalangala's reliability, not the routeservice status

    Nakiwogo-Kalangala Bay

    Where
Treat the MV Kalangala listing above as describing a route that exists on paper, not a guaranteed sailing. Uganda's national press has run a steady stream of headlines on the vessel over 2018-2026 (breakdowns, maintenance suspensions, grounding, contract disputes) that this pass could not open in full because both principal outlets, Daily Monitor and ChimpReports, blocked every fetch attempted, including a browser user agent over HTTP/1.1 and a text-extraction proxy. Do not book onward travel assuming this ferry is sailing; ask at Nakiwogo or Kalangala, or check whichever Ugandan outlet is reachable on the day.

MV Rafiki, Nakiwogo (Entebbe) to Bukasa Islandferry

Nakiwogo landing site, Entebbe, direct to Bukasa Island, Kalangala District (not Buggala/Kalangala town)

    Where
A 250-passenger vessel launched in November 2025 under a public-private partnership between the Government of Uganda and Nation Oil Distributors Ltd (NODL), intended as a second, more direct link to the islands. It serves Bukasa, one of the outer Ssese islands, rather than the main Buggala/Kalangala Bay landing, so check which island you actually need before booking. A Daily Monitor headline dated 31 August 2026 reported the vessel suspended for three weeks after a debris incident on the lake; this pass could not open the article (monitor.co.ug refused every fetch) so the suspension's cause, current status and any resumption date are unconfirmed here.

No night ferries, and why that matters for planningservice status

    All Entebbe/Nakiwogo-Kalangala crossings

    Where
As of a December 2025 campaign rally in Kalangala, President Museveni was still fielding public complaints that the ferries "operate for only a few hours and they do not move at night" and pledged to look into restoring night sailings, a promise made before on this route and not yet delivered as of this research pass. Plan to arrive at Nakiwogo or Bukakata in daylight; there is no confirmed after-dark crossing to fall back on.

  7. 07
Nyendo (Masaka) to Bukakata pickup trucksshared pickup

Nyendo Trading Centre, on the edge of Masaka town, to Bukakata landing site, about 40 km

    Where
From Masaka's main taxi park, ask the conductor for Nyendo or ask to be dropped at Nyendo stage; several open-back pickup trucks run the 40 km to Bukakata through the day, filling before they leave. This is Wikivoyage's description and has not been reconfirmed against a current fare or timetable in this pass.
    When
Several trips a day in each direction, leaving when full; no fixed timetable found
    Fare
Not confirmed; no current fare found for this leg specifically
    Takes
Roughly 1 hour for the 40 km, unpaved for part of the way
    Season
Year-round; the road can be rough after rain
    Booking
    None, pay the driver

    Boda-bodas on Buggala Islandboda boda

Kalangala town and along the island's single main road down Buggala's murram spine

    Where
Boda-bodas wait around Kalangala town's landing area and taxi park and are the default way to reach beaches and hotels along Kalangala Bay, or further along the island's one main road. No current fare list, operator body or route map for the island's boda-boda riders was found on a government, news or operator page in this research pass; this entry is included because the brief and general knowledge of the island make clear they exist and matter, not because a source could be cited for terms.
    When
    On demand through daylight hours
    Fare
    Not confirmed; negotiate before riding
    Season
Year-round; the island's murram road is reported rough and can worsen after rain, though no dated source on current road condition was found

  9. 09
Lake taxis to Banda, Bubeke and the outer islandsboat

From Kasenyi fishing terminal (between Kampala and Entebbe) and from landings on Buggala, to the smaller inhabited islands including Banda, Bubeke, Bufumira, Kyamuswa and Mazinga

    Where
These are large wooden cargo-and-passenger boats, roughly 10 m long, that carry goods (ice, soda, bananas) as well as people; there is no dock at Kasenyi, so passengers are carried through chest-deep water by porters. According to Wikivoyage, timings vary and are best confirmed with your destination in advance, boats do not reliably keep to any schedule, and they carry no life vests. A 2019 report on a US-donated ambulance boat for the district independently confirms that outer-island residents in Bufumira, Kyamuswa, Bubeke and Mazinga have historically relied on cargo boats for routine travel, including medical referrals, for lack of any scheduled passenger service.
    When
Irregular; ask locally for the day's timing rather than expecting a fixed departure
    Fare (2017)
Most long trips from Kasenyi cost around USh 10,000 per Wikivoyage, undated beyond the page's general content and not reconfirmed here
    Takes
Varies by island; a dedicated speedboat can reach the furthest island, Nkese, in about 45 minutes against roughly 3 hours for a slower fibreglass boat, per the 2019 report (that comparison describes district-owned ambulance boats, not the passenger lake taxis, and should not be read as a lake-taxi timing)
    Season
Year-round, but boats are cancelled or delayed in storms; do not travel if the lake looks rough
    Booking
    None, arrange at the landing

Lake Victoria storms decide whether any small boat sailsservice status

All wooden-boat and lake-taxi crossings around the Ssese Islands

    Where
Not a vehicle, but the single most important fact for anyone using the small boats: Lake Victoria's storms have repeatedly capsized overloaded wooden boats and small ferries around the Ssese Islands, and Wikivoyage's own safety section for the islands warns that the mainland ferry is unreliable and that small wooden launches, substituted when it is not running, can be overwhelmed by waves. No individual harbourmaster or single decision-maker for the outer-island boats was identified in this pass; in practice, boat owners themselves decide whether to sail. Do not board an overloaded boat, and do not press a boatman to leave in poor weather.
    When
Storm risk is highest in the two rainy seasons (roughly March-May and September-November) but can occur at any time
    Fare
    Not a priced service
    Season
Year-round risk, worse in the rains

Bicycle hire in Kalangala townbicycle hire

Kalangala town to Mutumbula beach and, on a longer trip, to Mulabana

    Where
Wikivoyage describes bicycles for hire in Kalangala town, used for day trips to Mutumbula (full day round trip with beach time) or an overnight or dusk-to-dawn push to Mulabana. No current shop name, rate or contact was found in this pass; ask at your hotel in Kalangala town, since several beachfront hotels are clustered close enough to reach on foot.

Not yet confirmed: The brief's premise that Entebbe is close in a straight line and far by any actual route is confirmed by every source found: there is no direct road (Lake Victoria is in the way), and every crossing from the Entebbe side depends on a ferry with a documented history of extended groundings.; MV Kalangala's exact status on the research date (28 September 2026) could not be confirmed. Google News RSS listed a headline from 4 September 2026, "Passengers complain over Kalangala ferry" (Daily Monitor), suggesting it was running but with service complaints; earlier headlines from December 2025 described it as grounded. Both monitor.co.ug and chimpreports.com refused every fetch attempted in this pass, including a browser user agent over HTTP/1.1 and a text-extraction proxy, so neither could be opened to confirm. Ask at Nakiwogo, or check a Ugandan news site that is reachable on the day, before relying on this ferry.; MV Rafiki's suspension reported by Daily Monitor for 31 August 2026 (three weeks, following a debris incident) could not be confirmed in full text for the same reason; treat it as an unconfirmed lead, not a fact, until a working source is found.; No fare, timetable, contact number or ticketing method for MV Rafiki was found on any operator, government or news page reachable in this pass; ask at Nakiwogo or with Kalangala District Local Government.; The Bukakata-Luku ferry's current timetable (Wikivoyage's four-round-trip schedule) is not reconfirmed against a live KIS Ltd source; KIS Ltd does not appear to publish a public timetable page that could be found.; No boda-boda fare list, association, or current road-condition report for Buggala Island's single main road was found on any source reachable in this pass.; Bilharzia (schistosomiasis) risk from lake water and Nile crocodile attacks are both mentioned in Wikivoyage's safety section for the islands but neither is transport information as such; they are noted here only because the brief asked about them, and neither claim is reconfirmed against a health authority or wildlife-agency source in this pass.; docs/13-api-inventory.md was checked before this research began: it lists no operator endpoint for Uganda, Lake Victoria ferries, or any Kalangala/Ssese operator, so there is no existing entry to confirm or correct for this place.; Checked and confirmed working in this pass despite the brief's general warning about blocked news outlets: www.independent.co.ug's own WordPress REST API (wp-json/wp/v2/posts?search=...) served full article text reliably over HTTP/1.1 with a browser user agent, and was the single most useful source found for this file. monitor.co.ug, chimpreports.com and nilepost.co.ug were all blocked by Cloudflare bot challenges in every form tried (HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2, browser user agent, text-extraction proxy)..
