Sa Pa
Sapa is a Nigerian slang term that has gained prominence in recent years, particularly among young Nigerians.
It is used to describe a state of financial incapacity or extreme poverty, often resulting from excessive spending and poor financial management. It was eventually added to the Urban Dictionary in 2020.
Getting around Sa Pa the local way
Sa Pa is reached either by the Hanoi night train to Lao Cai plus a 35 km road transfer, or by cabin sleeper bus straight up the Noi Bai–Lao Cai expressway. Big coaches cannot enter the centre, so the last leg is an electric four-wheeler, a xe om or a taxi, and the surrounding villages are reached by motorbike, by the Ta Van bus, or on foot with a local guide.
- 01Hanoi to Lao Cai night traintrain
Ha Noi station to Lao Cai station, 296 km. The train does not reach Sa Pa; Lao Cai is 32–35 km short of it
- Where
- Trains leave from Ha Noi station on Le Duan. Vietnam Railways runs the train, but many carriages are branded and sold by private companies (Livitrans, Violette, King Sapa, Sapaly, Tonkin Heritage and others) that own or lease the cars. Anybody can buy the plain Vietnam Railways berths at the station ticket office; the branded cabins are sold by agents. If you buy through an agent you get a voucher to swap for the real ticket at the station 30–60 minutes before departure.
- When
- Two to three night trains a day each way. SP3 leaves Hanoi 22:00 and arrives 05:55; SP7 leaves 22:40 and arrives 06:25. Returning, SP4 leaves Lao Cai 21:30 and arrives Hanoi 05:30
- Fare (2025)
- A berth in a four-berth soft sleeper is about 400,000–450,000 dong, roughly US$14–17. Branded private cabins run US$32–34 and the top-end ones up to US$69; two-berth deluxe cabins can reach 3,500,000 dong a head
- Takes
- About 8 hours
- Season
- Year-round. Tickets around Vietnamese holidays sell out and cost more; book ahead
- Booking
- Vietnam Railways online at vietnamrailway.com.vn, or Baolau and 12Go. Buy the return leg when you buy the outward one: Lao Cai station staff speak less English and may only sell for same-day travel

- 02Lao Cai station to Sa Pa: public bus, shared minivan, shared carminibus
Lao Cai railway station up National Highway 4D to Sa Pa town, 32–35 km
- Where
- Come out of the station and cross the forecourt. The public bus is red and yellow and stops on the street by the park in front of the station; ask for Sa Pa. Shared minivans and 9 to 16 seaters wait immediately outside the exit with Sa Pa on the windscreen and touts calling; they leave when full, which at the 06:00–08:00 train arrivals rarely takes more than 10–15 minutes. Agree the price before you get in, and agree whether you are being dropped in the centre or at your hotel.
- When
- Public bus roughly every 20–30 minutes from about 05:20 to 17:00. Minivans go continuously through the day and cluster around train arrivals
- Fare (2026)
- Public bus 30,000–40,000 dong, listed by one 2026 comparison at US$1.60–2.00. Shared minivan 60,000–150,000 dong, with 100,000 the usual asking price; the same comparison gives US$3–8. A whole car or taxi is US$20–100 depending on the vehicle. Wikivoyage's older figures were 40,000–55,000 dong
- Takes
- 45–60 minutes by minivan, over an hour on the public bus with its stops
- Season
- Year-round, but Highway 4D is the weak link. Landslides closed it between Coc San and Sa Pa overnight on 29–30 September 2025 after typhoons Bualoi and Matmo, and the authorities warned the landslide risk on 4D stays high in prolonged rain and fog
- Booking
- None needed for the bus or the vans. Hotels will send a car if you tell them your train, for a higher fixed price. Klook and 12Go sell shared and private transfers

- 03Hanoi to Sa Pa cabin sleeper bus and limousine vanminibus
Hanoi to Sa Pa town direct on the Noi Bai–Lao Cai expressway, bypassing Lao Cai city
- Where
- The expressway cut the drive from over ten hours to about five and a half, so the direct bus now competes with the train. Sapa Express picks up at 204 Tran Quang Khai in Hoan Kiem, half an hour before departure, and drops in Sa Pa at 01 Vuon Treo. Sao Viet and others also pick up near My Dinh bus station on Pham Van Dong. All services make one rest stop about halfway. Going back to Hanoi, confirm the drop point in writing: drivers have been known to leave passengers in the western outskirts rather than the centre.
- When
- Sapa Express runs a 28-seat soft-seat bus at 07:00 and 15:00 and a 24-cabin bus at 07:00 and 22:00 from Hanoi; from Sa Pa the soft seat leaves 07:30 and 15:00 and the cabin bus 14:00 and 22:00. Across all operators there are day and night departures roughly hourly in peak season
- Fare (2026)
- Sapa Express US$16 one way soft seat, US$24 one way for the premium cabin, with round trips at double. Across operators a cabin sleeper berth is 450,000–540,000 dong (US$17–21) and a limousine van seat 530,000–630,000 dong (US$20–26)
- Takes
- 5.5 to 6.5 hours; Sapa Express advertises 6 hours including stops
- Season
- Year-round. Same landslide exposure as the road transfer once the bus leaves the expressway at Lao Cai
- Booking
- Operator websites, 12Go, Baolau, Klook, or any Hanoi hotel or agent

- 04Electric four-wheelers in the centre, and the large-vehicle banshuttle bus
Around Sa Pa town: the church and square, the culture market, Luong Dinh Cua, Ngu Chi Son, Xuan Vien, Ham Rong and Thach Son streets
- Where
- Coaches over 29 seats and trucks over 10 tonnes are banned from 31 streets in the centre, so most arriving buses stop at a car park or transfer point on the edge and you finish the trip in something small. Open-sided electric cars wait at the square, at the church and at the designated drop-off points; flag one or ask your hotel to call. The ban runs 06:00 to 23:00 Sunday to Thursday and all day Friday and Saturday, and has been in force since 21 August 2022.
- When
- Daily, roughly 06:00 to 21:00, on demand along the approved routes
- Fare (2024)
- The pilot was licensed with fares by the kilometre, by the whole vehicle per day, and per person per trip. Reported per-trip fares are in the region of 6,000–7,000 dong a person, but the town has had to discipline operators for not posting prices and for charging more than quoted, so ask and agree first
- Takes
- A few minutes; the whole centre is walkable in 20
- Season
- Year-round. Fog and ice in December and January make the steep streets slow
- Booking
- None, wave one down

- 05Xe om, taxis, homestay pickups and the Ta Van busmoto taxi
Sa Pa town to Cat Cat, Ta Phin, Silver Waterfall, and down the Muong Hoa valley road about 12 km to Ta Van via Y Linh Ho and Lao Chai
- Where
- Xe om riders wait in small groups at set points around the square and at the top of Cau May street, and at the bottom of the Cat Cat walk where they collect people who do not want to climb back up. The town publicised a price list for every company, which is still the reference locals quote, though it dates from 2016 and is now a floor rather than a rate. For the valley, homestays in Ta Van and Lao Chai send a motorbike up to collect guests, which is the normal arrangement: message the homestay the day before with your arrival time. Since 2025 there is also a direct bus from the central bus station to Ta Van. A common trick is to take a taxi down to Lao Chai, walk the 3.5 km through the fields to the bridge at Ta Van, and have the same taxi meet you there. Mopeds are rented in the touristy streets and near the petrol station on the Lao Cai road.
- When
- Xe om and taxis on demand from early morning until evening. The Ta Van bus runs four times a day at 07:00, 09:30, 13:00 and 16:00. Homestay pickups by arrangement
- Fare (2025)
- Published list, by motorbike: Cat Cat 150,000 dong, Lao Chai 70,000, Ta Phin 200,000, Silver Waterfall 200,000, waiting 50,000 an hour. By car: Cat Cat 300,000, Lao Chai 250,000, Ta Phin 600,000, Silver Waterfall 600,000. In 2025 a taxi to Ta Van was 220,000–300,000 one way or about 500,000 return with an hour or two of waiting, and a motorbike taxi to a Ta Van homestay 80,000. The Ta Van bus is 75,000. The ride back up from Cat Cat is about 40,000 a person. Moped hire is 150,000–200,000 dong a day, or US$3–6 depending on hours and bargaining
- Takes
- Cat Cat 10 minutes, Lao Chai 20–25 minutes, Ta Van 30–40 minutes. Walking Sa Pa to Ta Van takes 4–5 hours
- Season
- Year-round. Riders thin out in heavy rain and in the January cold. The valley field paths are deep mud from May to September; homestays lend gumboots and ponchos
- Booking
- None for xe om or the bus. Taxi firms take phone bookings: Fanxipang +84 214 362 6262, Sa Pa Green +84 214 363 6363. Book pickups through the homestay directly

- 06Muong Hoa funicular and the Fansipan cable carcable car
Hotel de la Coupole in Sa Pa town by funicular to the Muong Hoa cable car station, then cable car to just below the 3,143 m summit, then a second funicular to the top
- Where
- The Muong Hoa funicular station is in the middle of town beside the Hotel de la Coupole, which makes it transport as much as an attraction: it is the only way out of the town centre to the cable car base without a road transfer. The summit funicular saves the last 600 steps. The alternative is a one to three day guided hike from Sa Pa.
- When
- Daily, continuous through opening hours
- Fare (2025)
- Cable car return 800,000 dong, 550,000 for children between 1 m and 1.4 m. Muong Hoa funicular from town 200,000 return. Summit funicular 150,000 up and 120,000 down. Cable car plus buffet 1,050,000, or 1,200,000 with the Muong Hoa funicular included. Adult tickets carry a 46,000 dong surcharge on Saturdays and public holidays. Wikivoyage's older figures were 750,000 cable car, 100,000 town funicular and 70,000 to the peak
- Takes
- Funicular from town about 4 minutes, cable car about 15 minutes, summit funicular about 3 minutes
- Season
- Year-round, but the views are often lost in fog, and the summit can be below freezing with ice in December and January
- Booking
- At the station, or online through Sun World, Klook, KKday and Traveloka, usually cheaper than the gate

- 07Guided treks that replace the transferwalking trail
Sa Pa town down through Y Linh Ho, Lao Chai and Ta Van, or out to Ta Phin, Sin Chai, Ma Tra, Ban Khoang and Ta Giang Phinh
- Where
- Walking is how most people actually get between Sa Pa and the valley villages, and a guide is the transport arrangement. Hmong and Dao women offer themselves as guides in the town and in Lao Chai, sometimes insistently. Agencies such as Sapa Sisters and Xi Quan book online, though Wikivoyage notes they often supply Kinh guides rather than Hmong or Dao ones and that villagers say they see little of the money. Many people hike out and arrange a jeep, van or motorbike back.
- When
- Daily, leaving town in the morning
- Fare (2025)
- A local guide is about US$20–25 a day. Cat Cat village charges admission, quoted at 70,000 dong in 2024 and 150,000 elsewhere; most other villages no longer charge. Hoang Lien National Park 70,000, Silver Waterfall 20,000. Bamboo walking sticks from children cost about 5,000 dong
- Takes
- Sa Pa to Ta Van is about 14 km and 4–5 hours. Two and three day treks with a Ta Van homestay are the standard longer option
- Season
- The terraces are green from June, gold in September. Paths are slick mud in the rain and frozen in January; boots or gumboots, a stick and a waterproof bag are the standard kit
- Booking
- Agencies online or through a hotel; independent guides by asking in town

- 08Buses to the Bac Ha Sunday marketminibus
Lao Cai bus terminal to Bac Ha, 55 km; from Sa Pa it is about 100 km and usually done as a tour
- Where
- Bac Ha is closer to Lao Cai than to Sa Pa, so the cheap way is to time your train so that you are in Lao Cai on a Sunday morning and take a bus from the terminal, which is about 300 m southwest of the railway station down Phan Dinh Phung. From Sa Pa itself there is no useful public service and almost everyone goes on a minibus tour, often arranged so you are met at Lao Cai station, taken to the market and dropped in Sa Pa afterwards, or the reverse on the way out.
- When
- Buses from Lao Cai terminal at about 07:00, 11:30 and 14:00. Tours from Sa Pa leave early Sunday morning
- Fare (2025)
- Around 90,000 dong from Lao Cai in 2025; Wikivoyage's Lao Cai page gives 70,000. A market tour combining the Lao Cai pickup, Bac Ha, a Flower Hmong village and the Hekou border was US$15 when Wikivoyage last recorded it in 2013
- Takes
- About 2 hours from Lao Cai, 2.5 to 3 hours from Sa Pa
- Season
- Sunday only for the main market. Bac Ha is at lower altitude and warmer than Sa Pa
- Booking
- Turn up at Lao Cai bus terminal, or book a tour through a Sa Pa hotel, 12Go or GetYourGuide

Not yet confirmed: The official xe om and taxi price list posted by the town dates from 1 January 2016 and no newer government tariff was found. Current asking prices for the same journeys are two to four times higher. Treat the list as evidence that fixed prices exist, not as the price.; The per-trip fare for the electric four-wheelers is not published by the town or by the three licensed operators. The 6,000–7,000 dong figure comes from secondary write-ups. Lao Cai disciplined operators in 2023 for not posting prices, which suggests the posted fare is still not reliably displayed.; The 2022 ban on coaches over 29 seats covers 31 named streets, but no source lists all of them, or names the official transfer points where sleeper buses now stop. Ask your bus company where it actually terminates in Sa Pa.; The Sa Pa to Ta Van direct bus is reported by one travel guide only and was not confirmed against a bus station timetable or a provincial transport notice. Check at the bus station before relying on the 16:00 return.; Lao Cai to Sa Pa fares are quoted across a wide band, from 30,000 dong on the public bus to 150,000 in a van, and touts at the station and at the Hekou border crossing have long asked several times the real price. Wikivoyage records people being asked 150,000 to 200,000 dong for a seat that should be 25,000 to 55,000.; How often Highway 4D actually closes is not tracked in any single place. Closures are reported storm by storm in the Vietnamese press, most recently around typhoons Bualoi and Matmo in late September and October 2025, when Sa Pa reopened to tourists after several days.; Snow and ice in Sa Pa are reported as weather events, not as road closures. No source found says the Lao Cai road or the valley roads shut in January cold, only that ice makes them risky and that January nights reach around 0 °C.; No fare or timetable was found for any shared transport out to Y Linh Ho or the further villages of Ban Khoang and Ta Giang Phinh. Those appear to be motorbike, private car or walking only..
