Its capital is the city of Antipolo. It is about 16 kilometers (9.9 mi) east of Manila. The province is named after José Rizal, one of the main national heroes of the Philippines. It is bordered by Metro Manila to the west, Bulacan to the north, Quezon to the east and Laguna to the southeast. The province also lies on the northern shores of Laguna de Bay, the largest lake in the country. Rizal is a mountainous province perched on the western slopes of the southern portion of the Sierra Madre mountain range.

How locals move

Getting around Rizal the local way

  • Get inBus service is severely lacking to serve most corners in Rizal, so you might need a car to cover everything not covered well by a jeepney.
  • Get inAs a de facto suburb of Metro Manila, western Rizal is served by buses and jeepneys traveling between the two regions.
  • Get inFrom Laguna, SINCRODA operates jeepneys from Siniloan to Cainta, entering Rizal at Pililla and passing through Antipolo and Teresa via Manila East Road.
  • Get inThere are also separate jeepney services connecting Siniloan with Jalajala, Pililla and Tanay.
  • Get inThere are no interprovincial ferries in Laguna de Bay.
  • Get aroundJeepneys mostly provide most service in much of the province, but are in short supply in upland areas.
  • Get aroundA unique and ubiquitous type of jeepney in Rizal and connecting routes is the “patok”, jeepneys of a longer, highly-decorated and heavily-built frame than the jeepneys elsewhere to negotiate the changing road terrain, and running on noisier engines with blaring stereos.
  • Get aroundThe main jeepney hubs are in Antipolo, Tanay, Binangonan, Angono and the towns directly bordering Metro Manila.
