How locals move

Getting around Pai the local way

Pai has no railway and no working airport, so almost everyone arrives in a minivan over the 762 curves of Route 1095 – Prempracha's route 612 vans from Chiang Mai Arcade terminal, or Aya Service vans that leave from Aya's own office with hotel pick-up – and once in the valley the town is walkable while the canyon, waterfalls and hot springs are reached by rented scooter, a chartered songthaew or a motorbike taxi.

  1. 01
Prempracha van, Chiang Mai Arcade to Pai (route 612)minibus

Chiang Mai Arcade Bus Terminal to Pai Bus Station on Chaisongkram Road, over Route 1095

    Where
Prempracha is the scheduled operator on the corridor, sold at the Arcade terminal counters in the northeastern part of Chiang Mai, outside the old city, and on the company's own booking site. Arcade is not walkable from the old town – take a songthaew, tuk-tuk or Grab. Book online and arrive about ten minutes before departure with the e-ticket on your phone. The road is the same 762 curves whichever operator you use, so bring motion sickness tablets and sit near the front.
    When
Hourly, 06:30 to 17:30 from Chiang Mai; 07:00 to 17:00 hourly plus a 17:30 from Pai (live booking system, September 2026)
    Fare (2026)
220 baht per seat each way. An ordinary public bus over the same road is cheaper at about 80–90 baht but slower and much rarer, and Wikivoyage reports foreigners are usually turned away from the once-daily fan bus.
    Takes
About 3 hours, 3 to 4 hours with traffic or weather; there is a comfort stop at the half-way village of Mae Sae
    Season
Year-round. Seats sell out in the cool high season October to February and over Thai long holidays, so book both directions. Late February to April is northern Thailand's burning season, when haze covers the whole region.

Aya Service minivan, Chiang Mai to Paiminibus

Aya Service office in Chiang Mai, or your city hotel, to Aya's office on Chaisongkram Road in Pai

Aya is the backpacker operator that does not use the Arcade terminal. Its Chiang Mai office is at 60-60/1 B13-14 Kham Thiang Plaza, Soi Srimongkol; its Pai office is at 22/1 Moo 3, Chaisongkram Road, in the middle of town a short walk from the bus station and the walking street. The van leaves from the office, or picks you up at a hotel inside the city. Aya also runs one-way motorbike rentals between the two towns and will carry your luggage in the van for you.
    When
Roughly hourly. The live booking page for 21 September 2026 showed Chiang Mai departures at 08:30, 09:30, 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 13:30, 14:30 and more on later pages, and Pai departures at 07:00 then hourly 08:30 to 15:30.

  3. 03
Pai onward to Pangmapha (Soppong) and Mae Hong Sonminibus

Pai Bus Station to Soppong / Pangmapha and Mae Hong Son on Route 1095, the northern half of the Mae Hong Son Loop

    Where
The through Chiang Mai–Pai–Pang Mapha–Mae Hong Son services call at Pai, so you can join them there. Buy at the Pai Bus Station counter on Chaisongkram Road – cash only, no card and no Thai bank QR. Booking the through service online from Chiang Mai is also possible, but the standalone Pai–Mae Hong Son leg was not sellable on the company's site on the day checked. Mae Hong Son's bus station is about a 15-minute walk southwest of the town centre.
    When
Through services from Chiang Mai at 08:30, 09:30, 10:30, 12:30, 13:30 and 14:30, reaching Pai about three hours later
    Fare (2026)
150 baht Pai to Mae Hong Son at the Pai counter. The through Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son fare is 350 baht by van and 390 baht on the 08:30 minibus.
    Takes
About 3 hours Pai to Mae Hong Son; roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to Soppong
    Season
Year-round. The 1095 north of Pai is reputed to have over 1,864 curves between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son; heavy rain and flash floods are a real risk in the wet months.
    Booking
Cash at Pai Bus Station for the local leg; booking.premprachatransports.com for the through service

  4. 04
Songthaew and chartered pick-up around the Pai valleysongthaew

Pai town to Pai Canyon, Tha Pai and Sai Ngam hot springs, Mo Paeng and Pam Bok waterfalls, Santichon Chinese village and the outlying bungalows

    Where
There is a taxi counter next to the bus station on Chaisongkram Road with long-distance fares on posters, plus smaller counters around town. Shared red trucks wait near the bus station and leave when enough people turn up, so they loop the town before heading out. Agree the stops and the price before you get in. Pai Canyon is signposted about 8 km south on the Chiang Mai road; Tha Pai hot springs are signposted from the same road; Mo Paeng waterfall is west, past Santichon.
    When
No timetable – they run when full, or on charter; drivers prefer a day hire to a single run
    Fare (2026)
Roughly 50–150 baht per trip within the valley. A return run to Pai Canyon or the hot springs including waiting time is quoted at 400 baht per person. A private day hire around town is 1,500–2,000 baht. Entry fees are separate: Tha Pai hot springs 300 baht for foreigners and 100 baht for Thais, Sai Ngam 200 baht.
    Takes
10 to 30 minutes to most valley sights
    Season
Year-round; the canyon is the sunset stop, so demand peaks late afternoon in the cool season
    Booking
None – turn up at the counter or ask your guesthouse

    Motorbike and 4WD taxismoto taxi

Short hops from the bus station and walking street to riverside and rice-field guesthouses around the valley

    Where
Ask at the taxi counters on Chaisongkram Road. The word taxi in Pai covers a pick-up, a saloon car, a minibus for a group, or a motorbike for one person with light luggage – say where you are going and they will match a vehicle. Grab has very little presence in Pai, so do not plan around the app.
    When
On demand through the day, thin after the walking street closes
    Fare (2026)
About 40–100 baht per ride; anything longer is negotiated
    Takes
5 to 15 minutes for most in-town and edge-of-town runs

    Year-round

Pai to Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Soppong, Chiang Rai, Chiang Khong, Tha Ton and Sukhothai

    Where
The taxi counter beside the bus station on Chaisongkram Road advertises long-distance fares on posters, so there is little to haggle over. Useful when you have missed the last van, are travelling as a group, or want a connection that would otherwise mean changing in Chiang Mai. They will also carry a rented motorbike in the back.
    When
On demand; book the day before for an early start
    Fare (2026)
Chiang Mai 2,500–3,000 baht, Mae Hong Son 2,500 baht, Soppong 1,500 baht, Chiang Rai 4,500 baht, Tha Ton 4,200 baht, Chiang Khong 6,500 baht, Sukhothai 6,500 baht, all per vehicle. Pai to Chiang Mai by pick-up with your motorbike in the back was quoted at 2,500 baht.

  7. 07
    Scooter and motorbike hirescooter hire

Pai town, the valley loops, and one-way rentals between Chiang Mai and Pai

    Where
Rental shops line Chaisongkram Road and the main street; Aya Service is the largest and rents in both towns. Aya's 2026 list is 200 baht a day for a 115 or 125 cc automatic or a Honda Wave, and 500 baht a day for a 150–160 cc PCX, NMAX, Click 160 or Aerox. Aya also does one-way Chiang Mai to Pai rentals and sends your luggage and passport on in the van. Expect a passport deposit and small daily charges for damage and theft cover. This is the riskiest way to get around: police report an average of two accidents a day on the Chiang Mai–Pai road, and more in the rainy season, and a helmet plus a licence and an International Driving Permit are legally required – riding without one voids most travel insurance and attracts a 400–500 baht fine at the frequent checkpoints.
    When
Shops open through the day; supply is tight in the December–January peak
    Fare (2026)
100–300 baht a day for a small automatic across the town's shops; Aya 200 baht for 115–125 cc and 500 baht for 150–160 cc. Bicycles are 40–100 baht a day.
    Takes
Pai Canyon about 15 minutes, Mo Paeng waterfall about 20 minutes, Tham Lod cave in Pangmapha about 1 hour 15 minutes each way
    Season
Avoid in heavy rain – the mountain roads turn slick fast and gravel collects near the waterfalls. February to April is the burning season, when visibility from the viewpoints is poor.
    Booking
Walk in, or reserve on ayaservice.com/motorcycle

Walking in Pai town and out to Mae Yen waterfallwalking trail

The town centre and walking street on foot; Mae Yen waterfall on foot from the parking area 3 km east of town

    Where
The centre of Pai is a few hundred metres across and the walking street market sets up in it each evening, so nothing in town needs wheels. For Mae Yen, head east over the bridge and follow the signs; there is parking 3 km from town and the last 6 km is on foot with no bikes allowed, crossing the stream repeatedly. Guidebook suggestions that the Chinese village at Santichon (50 minutes) and the Lisu village at Ban Sai Ngam (4 hours) are walkable are optimistic.
    When
Any time; start the Mae Yen walk early and turn back if the water is rising
    Fare (2026)
    Free
    Takes
Under 15 minutes across the town centre; about 3 hours each way for the 6 km walk-in to Mae Yen
    Season
Avoid the waterfall walk in heavy rain – Mae Hong Son sees flash floods, and brown water is the warning sign. February to April the valley fills with agricultural smoke.
    Booking

Not yet confirmed: Pai Airport (PYY) is inactive. Kan Air stopped flying in April 2017 and there has been no commercial service since; Wikivoyage confirmed none as of July 2024 and Wikipedia still describes it as an inactive regional airport in 2026. Do not plan on flying in – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pai_Airport and https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Pai; Correction to the brief: Aya Service does not leave from Chiang Mai Gate. Its own contact page gives the Chiang Mai office as 60-60/1 B13-14 Kham Thiang Plaza, Soi Srimongkol, in Mueang Chiang Mai, with hotel pick-up inside the city. One third-party guide vaguely places the boarding point 'near Tha Phae Gate', which could not be confirmed. The one thing every source agrees on is that Aya is not the Arcade terminal – https://www.ayaservice.com/contact; Prempracha's public pages carry no fare or timetable tables any more; the 220 / 350 / 390 baht figures and departure times above come from live queries to booking.premprachatransports.com for 25 September 2026 and may be seasonal. The standalone Pai–Mae Hong Son route was listed but sold no services online on the day checked; buy that leg at Pai Bus Station in cash.; No source was found quantifying rainy-season landslide closures on Route 1095 specifically. Wikivoyage records two road accidents a day on average and more in the rainy season, and Mae Hong Son Province warns of heavy rainfall and flash floods, but neither names landslide closures. Check Thai Highways Department or Mae Hong Son provincial announcements before travelling July to September.; The smoke season is documented for Chiang Mai (agricultural burning from around late February, roughly February to April, with hazardous air quality across the whole north), not specifically measured for Pai. Mae Hong Son province is usually among the worst affected. Check aqicn.org for Mae Hong Son before booking those months – https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Chiang_Mai; Songthaew fares inside Pai are ranges from guesthouse operators rather than a posted tariff; there is no fixed route network, so the 50–150 baht band should be treated as a negotiating anchor.; Hot spring entry fees (Tha Pai 300 baht for foreigners, Sai Ngam 200 baht) were last edited on Wikivoyage in 2017 and 2022 and may have risen..

The field note on Pai reads this entry in full, one option at a time, with every source beside it.
