Getting around Munsiyari the local way
Munsiyari sits at 2,200 m at the end of a 275 km mountain road from the railhead at Kathgodam, and by public transport it is a full day or two days. One early bus and a handful of shared jeeps leave Haldwani between about 04:00 and 06:30 and arrive at dusk; miss them and you hop Almora to Bageshwar to Thal and pick up a Thal – Munsiyari vehicle for the last leg over Birthi and Kalamuni top. The Thal – Munsiyari stretch is the fragile one, closed by landslides most monsoons and iced above Kalamuni in December. Since 2024 a seven-seat helicopter from Haldwani has made the same trip in under an hour.
- 01KMOU and Uttarakhand Roadways bus Haldwani – Munsiyariminibus
Haldwani to Munsiyari, about 286 km via Almora, Bageshwar or Seraghat, Thal, Birthi and Kalamuni top
- Where
- The Kumaon Motor Owners Union and the state roadways both work out of the Haldwani bus station area, which is a few minutes from Kathgodam railway station where the overnight trains from Delhi arrive. There is essentially one useful departure a day and it goes early; ask for the Munsiyari bus the evening before and be at the stand before it. There is also a daily morning bus out of Munsiyari for Haldwani, so the return needs the same early start.
- When
- One a day each way in practice, leaving Haldwani about 06:00 to 06:30. One guide calls the frequency very low and says there is just one bus a day
- Fare (2026)
- About ₹400–500 for the through journey
- Takes
- 9–12 hours, longer with monsoon holdups
- Season
- Year-round in principle. Cut by landslides on the Thal – Munsiyari stretch in the July to mid-September monsoon and by snow and ice above Kalamuni top between late December and February
- Booking
- At the counter on the day. Uttarakhand Roadways sells some services online at utconline.uk.gov.in up to a month ahead, but the Munsiyari run was not found in that system

- 02Direct shared jeep or tempo traveller Haldwani – Munsiyaritempo traveller
Haldwani to Munsiyari direct, passing Almora mid-morning and Thal around midday
- Where
- These are daily services run by one owner with a phone number rather than a stand with a board. Travellers get the number from a Haldwani taxi stand, a homestay or a previous passenger and call the night before to hold a seat; one account negotiated a seat from Almora on a vehicle that had started in Haldwani. Vehicles leave far earlier than the bus so that the last stretch is done in daylight.
- When
- Daily in season, departing Haldwani between about 04:00 and 06:00 and going when full
- Fare (2026)
- ₹1,000 per seat Haldwani to Munsiyari and ₹700 from Almora in a 2022 account; ₹600–800 per person quoted for 2026
- Takes
- 10–12 hours, arriving Munsiyari around 17:00–18:00
- Season
- Year-round, disrupted by the same monsoon landslides and winter ice as the bus
- Booking
- By phone the day before, or turn up at the stand before dawn and take a chance

- 03Thal – Munsiyari shared jeep, the last legshare jeep
Thal to Munsiyari, about 70 km up the Gori Ganga via Birthi falls and Kalamuni top at 2,700 m
- Where
- Thal is the junction where everyone arriving from Almora, Bageshwar or Pithoragarh changes. Jeeps and Sumos for Munsiyari wait near the bridge and the bazaar and board as vehicles from below arrive; one traveller found the onward vehicle by spotting a Thal – Munsiyari taxi service board the evening before and starting at 07:00 the next morning. Buses arriving from Haldwani stop at Thal for breakfast around 09:00, which is when the connections happen.
- When
- Several through the morning, leaving when full; much thinner after early afternoon and effectively nothing after dark
- Fare (2026)
- Not confirmed as a separate leg. The whole Haldwani run is ₹400–1,000 per seat and Pithoragarh to Munsiyari is about ₹200, so Thal to Munsiyari sits at the low end of that
- Takes
- 3–4 hours, more if the road is being cleared
- Season
- The weak link. The Thal – Munsiyari motor road was closed by landslide on 19 August 2025 and again in earlier monsoons; about a third of the stretch is in poor condition and hard ice forms above Kalamuni top in December, though the administration keeps earthmovers on it and usually reopens within two to three hours
- Booking
- None. Call ahead to confirm the road is open before committing to the change at Thal

- 04Almora and Bageshwar hop to Thalshare jeep
Almora to Bageshwar, Bageshwar to Thal, then Thal to Munsiyari, three separate shared vehicles
- Where
- This is the fallback when the one direct service has gone. Ask at the shared taxi area in Almora, which is where locals told one traveller to string the legs together. Each leg is a shared jeep or Sumo that leaves when full. Because there are three handovers it only works if you start at first light, and most people who do it break the night at Chaukori, Bageshwar or Thal rather than push through.
- When
- Each leg runs through the morning and dries up in the afternoon
- Fare (2023)
- About ₹400 for a shared seat Almora to Munsiyari on the direct services; the hopped legs are each a fraction of that but no per-leg fare was found
- Takes
- A long day from Almora, or two comfortable half days with a night at Chaukori or Thal
- Season
- Year-round, subject to the same Thal – Munsiyari closures
- Booking
- None, pay each driver

- 05Pithoragarh – Munsiyari shared cabshare taxi
Pithoragarh to Munsiyari, about 130 km via Thal
- Where
- Pithoragarh is the district headquarters and the alternative approach to the Almora side. Shared cabs leave from the town's taxi stands, and Pithoragarh itself is reached by shared taxi from Haldwani, which Wikivoyage recommends over the direct Tanakpur bus because of the road. This is the shortest shared leg to Munsiyari and the cheapest.
- When
- Morning departures, leaving when full
- Fare (2023)
- About ₹200 per seat
- Takes
- 5–6 hours
- Season
- Year-round, sharing the Thal – Munsiyari closures
- Booking
- None, pay the driver

- 06Air Heritage helicopter Haldwani – Munsiyarihelicopter
Haldwani to Munsiyari, with the same aircraft also serving Pithoragarh and Champawat
- Where
- A seven-seat helicopter flown by Heritage Aviation under the central UDAN regional connectivity scheme, inaugurated by the Uttarakhand chief minister. Book online at airheritage.in or by phone. It replaces a ten to twelve hour road day with well under an hour, which is why residents rather than tourists fill most of the seats.
- When
- Haldwani to Munsiyari at 07:45 and 12:30; Munsiyari to Haldwani at 08:35 and 13:20. Days of operation are not published
- Fare (2024)
- ₹3,500 per person each way. The same aircraft charges ₹3,000 to Pithoragarh and ₹2,500 to Champawat
- Takes
- Under an hour
- Season
- Weather-dependent and cancelled in poor visibility, which in practice means much of the monsoon
- Booking
- airheritage.in, or +91 8851072020 between 07:00 and 19:00. Advance booking is essential on seven seats

- 07Reserved taxi from the plainsprivate hire
Haldwani, Kathgodam, Nainital or Almora to Munsiyari, one vehicle to yourself
- Where
- Every taxi stand in Haldwani and Kathgodam and every Munsiyari homestay can put this together, and it is what groups of four or more usually end up doing because the shared vehicle leaves before dawn and only once. Ask for a driver who has done Kalamuni; the last stretch has 21 hairpins on a narrow road and an SUV handles it better than a sedan.
- When
- On demand, any time, though drivers refuse to start late enough to finish in the dark
- Fare (2026)
- ₹4,000–6,000 from Haldwani, ₹3,000–5,000 from Almora and ₹4,500–6,000 from Kathgodam depending on vehicle and season. Local Munsiyari operators quote around ₹9 per kilometre for outstation running
- Takes
- 9–10 hours from Haldwani
- Season
- Year-round; drivers add for winter and refuse the run when the Thal road is shut
- Booking
- At the stand, through a homestay, or online a day or two ahead

- 08Jeep to the Milam and Khaliya road headsoffroad 4x4
Munsiyari to Seolikote, the Lilam parking area for the Milam glacier trek, and short runs to Darkot, Birthi, Kalamuni and the Khaliya top trailhead
- Where
- Munsiyari is small enough that the taxi stand and the homestays are the same network. A day package covering the Nanda Devi temple, the tribal heritage museum, Kalamuni, Birthi falls and Thamri Kund is the standard product. For Milam, a jeep drops trekkers at Seolikote or Lilam early and the trail starts there; you also need an Inner Line Permit for the Johar valley because it runs to the Tibet border, and it is issued at the SDM office in Munsiyari itself.
- When
- On demand from the stand or a homestay, arranged the evening before
- Fare (2026)
- A local day package starts around ₹2,500. Khaliya top charges a ₹50 entry fee. No separate rate for the Milam road head drop was found
- Takes
- 1–2 hours to the Milam road head depending on road condition; a day for the sightseeing loop; Darkot is 6–8 km out on the Madkot road
- Season
- Khaliya and Milam are April to June and September to November; the Munsiyari – Milam road was blocked alongside the Thal road in August 2025 and Khaliya holds snow into spring
- Booking
- Through a homestay or at the stand a day ahead. Apply for the Milam Inner Line Permit at the SDM office in Munsiyari before setting out

Not yet confirmed: No Uttarakhand Transport Corporation or KMOU page lists a Haldwani – Munsiyari service with a departure time and fare. utconline.uk.gov.in sells tickets online but the Munsiyari route could not be found in its route search, and KMOU has no readable web presence at all. The 06:00–06:30 departure and the ₹400–500 fare come from travel guides, not from the operator.; The Thal – Munsiyari leg has no independently confirmed fare or timetable. Every source treats it as part of a longer journey. Ask at Thal bazaar on the day.; Where exactly shared jeeps for Munsiyari form up in Haldwani was not established. Sources say the bus station area and the taxi stands without naming one, and the direct service appears to be run by phone rather than from a fixed bay. Get the driver's number from your Munsiyari homestay before you travel.; Days of operation for the Air Heritage Haldwani – Munsiyari helicopter are not published in any source read. The timings and ₹3,500 fare are from the 2024 launch reports and may have changed; check airheritage.in.; The Pithoragarh – Munsiyari UDAN helicopter was announced for the end of September 2025 but no source confirms it actually started, and no fare or schedule was published.; Winter road status above Kalamuni top is described qualitatively only. No source gives dates when the Thal – Munsiyari road is normally shut by snow or how long closures last beyond one account of earthmovers clearing blockages in two to three hours.; Hitching customs in the Gori Ganga valley could not be documented. Wikivoyage notes that travel away from Uttarakhand's main pilgrimage routes may require hitchhiking, but no account of doing so on the Thal – Munsiyari road was found.; The Munsiyari taxi stand does not publish a rate card. The ₹2,500 day package figure is an aggregator's, not a local union's, and the Milam road head drop has no quoted price..
The field note on Munsiyari reads this entry in full, one option at a time, with every source beside it.
