Matsudo

Matsudo is a city in Chiba Prefecture, Japan.

As of 1 October 2024, the city had an estimated population of 499,533 in 242,918 households and a population density of 8,138 persons per km2. The total area of the city is 61.38 square kilometres (23.70 sq mi).

Getting to Matsudo

Matsudo is located on the JR Joban Line. It is linked to Ueno station in Tokyo by rapid trains running at frequent intervals of 10 min or less. The ride from Ueno takes as little as 20 min (on some midday services, 15 min at a cost of ¥290. Matsudo also serves as the terminating point on the Shin-Keisei Line, which runs to Tsudanuma (45 min, ¥250).

Things to do

Kento Festival (献灯まつり) (along the Sakagawa River). A votive lantern (kento) festival. This traditional festival has been held on Aug. 9 and 10, continuing the tradition of "Toumorokoshi Ichi" (maize market), since Edo period.

  • Go nextThe street markets and museums of Ueno are directly west of Asakusa, while Sumida of Skytree and sumo fame is immediately across the river.
  • Go nextAsakusa is a large Tokyo hub of the private Tobu railway, and you can be transported to a different world in two hours: Ashikaga Kinugawa — a hot-spring resort fallen on hard times Nikko — with its national parks and opulent shrines Tatebayashi Tochigi — A worthwhile day trip from Tokyo for its preserved architecture and old shops.
