Lower Hutt

Lower Hutt is a city in the Wellington Region of New Zealand.

Administered by the Hutt City Council, it is one of the four cities that constitute the Wellington metropolitan area.

Getting to Lower Hutt

There are only four roads into and out of Lower Hutt. Three are part of the state highway system, and these all lie on the western bank of the Hutt River, with the fourth, Eastern Hutt Road, connecting Lower Hutt to Upper Hutt via Stokes Valley. There is a regular bus service between Wellington and Lower Hutt.

Worth seeing

Belmont Regional Park is a great place to wander around. If you've got all day then the walk up to Belmont Trig is very tiring yet enjoyable, with outstanding views in clear weather.

Things to do

The Hutt River is easily accessible for most of its length. It is even able to be fished for trout - a fishing licence is required. Petone beach and especially the Eastbourne beaches are popular with swimmers and those who enjoy water sports. Lighthouse Cinema is a boutique cinema where you can watch a movie in comfortable surroundings with a nice glass of wine or a coffee.

Getting around Lower Hutt the local way

  • Get inThere are regular ferries between Wellington and Picton in the South Island operated by Interislander and Bluebridge, connecting with buses and the train to Christchurch.
  • Get inHitchhiking from central Wellington is difficult as most traffic stays within the metropolitan area, and it is illegal to hitchhike on the motorway until the Hutt Valley (about 15 km or 9 mi northeast of Wellington) or Ōtaki (about 65 km or 40 mi north).
  • Get inIf you are intending to hitchhike, you are best to catch a train to Waikanae or Upper Hutt and walk to the main highways to catch a lift from there (the best spot for Upper Hutt hitchhikers is at the Caltex petrol station about a 3 km walk north from the railway station along Fergusson Drive).
  • Get aroundWellington has an extensive and well-patronised public transport network, with buses, trains and ferries serving the city and beyond extending into the Greater Wellington region.
  • Get aroundThe Kelburn cable car is a Wellington icon.
  • Get aroundThe Wellington city terminal is at the end of Cable Car Lane, just off Lambton Quay, near the intersection with Grey Street.
