Lake Toba and Samosir
Volcanic lake located in North Sumatra Province, Indonesia

Lake Toba and Samosir

Lake Toba is a large natural lake in North Sumatra and Indonesia.

The lake is the massive caldera of the Toba supervolcano. The lake is located in the middle of the northern part of the island of Sumatra, with a surface elevation of about 900 metres (2,953 ft), and stretches from 2.88°N 98.52°E to 2.35°N 99.1°E. The lake is about 100 kilometres long, 30 kilometres (19 mi) wide, and up to 505 metres (1,657 ft) deep. It is the largest lake in Indonesia and the largest volcanic lake in the world. Toba Caldera is one of twenty geoparks in Indonesia, and was recognised in July 2020 as one of the UNESCO Global Geoparks.

See

Worth seeing

360° view of Lake Toba from the peak of hills located in Samosir island. Notable landmarks such as Tele observation tower and Aek Tano Ponggol bridge. Tombs and monuments of Batak kings in the past. Pine forests that surrounding the lake.

Do

Things to do

Adventurous travelers may find many opportunity to explore the wilderness. Lake Toba offers plenty of rainforest with hills and mountains. However, unless you are an experienced trekker and know what you are doing, walking into the jungle without a guide is very dangerous and could be fatal. Recover after the frenetic atmosphere of Indonesia.

Eat

Where to eat

Arsik, a dish that uses carp as the main ingredient and has a savory, spicy, and slightly sour taste. It's cooked with firewood, giving a distinctive aroma and taste to this dish. Locals said that storing Arsik carp in the refrigerator for one night and then frying it will make it even more delicious.

How locals move

Getting around Lake Toba and Samosir the local way

Almost everyone arrives at Parapat by road from Medan and then crosses the lake by boat. The road half of that trip changed completely between 2024 and 2026: the Kutepat toll road now runs from Tebing Tinggi past Pematang Siantar to Simpang Panei, and operators quote two to three hours from Medan where it used to be five. The crossing is still two separate businesses at two adjacent harbours. Tigaraja, on the Parapat market side, is where small wooden boats leave roughly hourly and will still put you off at your own guesthouse jetty in Tuk Tuk. Ajibata, a few hundred metres south and in a different regency, is the vehicle port: ASDP's KMP Ihan Batak and KMP Pora-Pora run to Ambarita on a fixed timetable with online tickets, and privately owned KMP Tao Toba 1 and 2 run to Tomok. A third crossing in the north, Tigaras to Simanindo, is the fastest way in for drivers coming from Medan. Samosir is not really an island: a road bridge at Pangururan crosses the Tano Ponggol canal and was rebuilt in 2023. On the island itself public transport is thin – some angkots and becaks, mostly around Pangururan and the ferry landings – and nearly every visitor hires a scooter instead.

Travel shared minibuses, Medan and Kualanamu to Parapatshare taxi

Kualanamu airport or anywhere in Medan to Parapat, Ajibata and Tigaraja harbours

    Where
At Kualanamu the operators keep counters in the arrivals area; Nice Trans, Exnevia Travel, Paradep and Artha Trans are the names to look for. From Medan city they are door to door, so you book by phone or WhatsApp the day before and they collect you from your hotel. Ask to be dropped at Pelabuhan Tigaraja if you are walking onto a boat for Tuk Tuk, or Pelabuhan Ajibata if you want Tomok – the drivers know the difference and will otherwise leave you in Parapat town, about 30 minutes' walk from the water.
    When
No timetable. One MPV carries six or seven people and leaves when the seats are sold, so mornings are much quicker than afternoons
    Fare (2026)
Rp 80,000–150,000 per seat from Kualanamu, higher in holiday season (2026). Rp 180,000–280,000 per seat door to door from Medan (2026)
    Takes
3–5 hours from Kualanamu depending on how many drop-offs the driver has; 3–4 hours door to door from Medan city
    Season
    year-round
    Booking
Phone or WhatsApp direct, at the airport counters on the day, or through Traveloka for the larger operators

Public buses to Parapat from Medan, Berastagi and Sibolgabus

Terminal Amplas or Terminal Pancing in Medan to Terminal Sosor Saba Parapat; also Kabanjahe and Pematang Siantar from Berastagi, and Sibolga from the south

    Where
In Medan go to Terminal Amplas on the southern edge of the city, or the Sejahtera ticket office at Terminal Pancing. Ask for Parapat and look for the PO Sejahtera, Parisma and Sampri liveries. Parapat's own terminal is Terminal Sosor Saba, with an ALS ticket shop for Medan, Bukittinggi and Padang, and it is a 30-minute walk or a Rp 5,000 minibus from the jetties, so tell the driver or conductor to drop you near Pelabuhan Tigaraja or Pelabuhan Ajibata instead. From Berastagi there is no through bus: take a minibus down to Kabanjahe terminal, then a bus towards Pematang Siantar, get off at the Simpang Dua junction and pick up a Parapat bus there.
    When
Departures through the day from Amplas rather than to a published timetable; buses from Amplas often wait until they are full
    Fare (2025)
Rp 65,000 Medan to Parapat on Sejahtera (2025); other reports put the range at Rp 25,000–60,000 (2026). Sibolga to Parapat about Rp 75,000 by minibus; Kabanjahe to Siantar about Rp 25,000 and Simpang Dua to Parapat about Rp 15,000
    Takes
4.5–8 hours from Medan depending on traffic and how often the bus stops; about 5 hours from Berastagi with three changes; about 6 hours from Sibolga
    Season
    year-round
    Booking
None needed, pay on board or at the ticket office

DAMRI KSPN buses to Ajibata harbourshuttle bus

Silangit airport to Pelabuhan Ajibata, and Pematang Siantar to Pelabuhan Ajibata

    Where
This is the state operator's subsidised tourism-corridor service, not a tourist shuttle, and it is cheap enough that people miss it. At Silangit the bus waits outside the terminal; in Pematang Siantar ask for the DAMRI KSPN stop. It sets you down at the vehicle ferry port at Ajibata, which is where the KMP boats to Ambarita and Tomok leave, a short walk from Tigaraja.
    When
Silangit to Ajibata departs 08:30, 13:30 and 18:30, returning from Ajibata at 06:00, 11:00 and 16:00. Pematang Siantar to Ajibata departs 08:00, 12:00 and 16:00, returning at 06:00, 10:00 and 14:00. A third route runs Silangit to Pakkat at 09:30 and 17:30
    Fare (2024)
Rp 9,600 Silangit to Ajibata, Rp 6,100 Pematang Siantar to Ajibata, Rp 9,700 Silangit to Pakkat (2024)
    Takes
Silangit is about 76 km from Parapat by road; Pematang Siantar about an hour from Parapat
    Season
    year-round
    Booking
Buy on the spot; payment is cashless by QRIS from mobile banking or an e-wallet

    Silangit airport (DTB)scheduled flight

Jakarta–Soekarno-Hatta and Batam to Siborong-Borong, on the southern shore

    Where
Officially Raja Sisingamangaraja XII Airport, still signposted and sold as Silangit. The runway was lengthened to 2,650 by 45 metres in 2019 and the apron built for six A320 or 737 MAX stands, which is why jets now come here instead of only turboprops. It is about 76 km from Parapat, so plan the road leg: the DAMRI KSPN bus to Ajibata, a hire car, or a travel minibus arranged by your guesthouse.
    When
Citilink from Jakarta–Soekarno-Hatta and Batam, Indonesia AirAsia from Jakarta–Soekarno-Hatta, Super Air Jet from Jakarta–Soekarno-Hatta and Batam. Frequencies are a few flights a day in total, not hourly
    Fare (2025)
    Not recorded; airline pricing
    Takes
About 2 hours 15 minutes from Jakarta
    Season
year-round. The airport lost its international status in 2024 after the Kuala Lumpur and Singapore routes stopped during the pandemic, so there are currently no direct foreign arrivals

    Vehicle ferries to Samosir: Ajibata–Ambarita, Ajibata–Tomok, Tigaras–Simanindoferry

Ajibata (Toba regency) to Ambarita and to Tomok; Tigaras (Simalungun) to Simanindo on the north of the island

    Where
Ajibata is the port with the ramp and the queue of cars, a few hundred metres south of Tigaraja and in a different regency. ASDP runs KMP Ihan Batak and KMP Pora-Pora from there to Ambarita; the separate, family-owned PT Gunung Hijau Megah runs KMP Tao Toba 1 and 2 to Tomok and sells online at kmptaotoba.com. If you are driving down from Medan, the northern crossing at Tigaras to Simanindo is quicker overall: about two hours off the toll at Tebing Tinggi, then a short sailing.
    When
Ajibata–Ambarita: first sailing 07:30 daily, last 18:00 Monday to Thursday and 21:15 Friday to Sunday. Tigaras–Simanindo: first boat 07:00 from both ends, then roughly every two hours, last trip 19:30; 14 to 20 crossings a day, the higher number on peak holidays
    Fare (2025)
Ajibata–Ambarita integrated tariff: adult Rp 16,700, infant Rp 7,000, motorcycle (class II) Rp 39,900, class III Rp 79,100, passenger car (class IV) Rp 232,700 (October 2025). Travel writers quote Rp 150,000–170,000 for a car on the Ajibata boats (2026)
    Takes
About 1 hour Ajibata to Ambarita or Tomok; about 45 minutes Tigaras to Simanindo
    Season
year-round; extra evening sailings Friday to Sunday and at Christmas, New Year and Lebaran, when queues at Ajibata run to thousands of vehicles a day
    Booking
KMP Ihan Batak is fully online-ticketed through ASDP's Ferizy system; KMP Sumut is partly online; the older wooden ferries at Ajibata and the small boats still take cash at the gate. KMP Tao Toba sells at kmptaotoba.com

Wooden public boats from Tigaraja and Ajibata, with jetty drop-offs at Tuk Tukboat

Pelabuhan Tigaraja, beside Parapat market, to the Tuk Tuk peninsula; Pelabuhan Ajibata to Tomok and to Lopo

    Where
Tigaraja is the small harbour below Parapat market, on the Simalungun side; Ajibata is the bigger port to the south with more boats. For Tuk Tuk use Tigaraja. The boats are open wooden launches with bench seating; the light green ones with wooden benches are the ones locals use and are the correct fare. Pay the crew on board, never anyone who approaches you on the quay demanding money before you board. Tell the boatman the name of your guesthouse when you get on and he will pull in at its own jetty – Tuk Tuk's hotels each have one. Coming from Ajibata, the first landing, Pelabuhan Sumber, is where the becaks and angkots wait.
    When
Roughly hourly from both harbours through the day, last boat around 18:00–19:00. Ajibata has more departures than Tigaraja
    Fare (2025)
Rp 20,000 per person Tigaraja to Tuk Tuk, motorcycle extra; Rp 15,000 per person on the Ajibata and Lopo wooden boats, plus Rp 15,000 for a motorcycle (November 2025). Wikivoyage reports Rp 25,000 for tourists and Rp 20,000 for locals (2024)
    Takes
45–60 minutes Tigaraja to Tuk Tuk; about 30 minutes Ajibata to Tomok
    Season
year-round, but afternoon squalls build on the lake. After the KM Sinar Bangun capsized off Simanindo in June 2018 with 164 dead, the investigation blamed overloading and found the operator had no manifest and no permit. Do not board a boat that is visibly overloaded or in bad weather, and check there are life jackets
    Booking
None. Pay the crew on the boat

Kutepat toll road and the Pangururan land bridgeservice status

Medan–Kualanamu–Tebing Tinggi then Kuala Tanjung–Tebing Tinggi–Parapat (Kutepat) as far as Simpang Panei; and the Tano Ponggol bridge at Pangururan

    Where
The toll now runs from Medan through Tebing Tinggi and past Pematang Siantar to the Simpang Panei interchange; the last stretch into Parapat is still ordinary road. Sections 3 and 4 opened in September 2024, the Sinaksak–Simpang Panei segment opened toll-free on 1 May 2026 after functional openings at Christmas 2025 and Lebaran 2026, and a ministerial decision of June 2026 sets tolls for it. Budget roughly Rp 102,500 in tolls for the whole run from Kualanamu. Separately, Samosir is reachable by road without any boat: a bridge at Pangururan crosses the narrow Tano Ponggol canal that separates the island from Sumatra. The current bridge, 382 m long with a 99 m main span, was finished in December 2022 and inaugurated on 25 August 2023, so heavy vehicles and long-distance buses can drive onto the island via Sidikalang and Tele.
    When
    Permanent
    Fare (2026)
Toll about Rp 102,500 Kualanamu to Parapat (2026); the Sinaksak–Simpang Panei segment was still free when the tariff decision was published in June 2026. The Tano Ponggol bridge is free
    Takes
Medan to the Lake Toba shore has gone from about 5 hours to about 2 hours; the Sidikalang–Tele–Pangururan land route is roughly 3–4 hours from Merek
    Season
    year-round
    Booking
Toll gates are cashless; you need an e-toll card

Angkots, becaks and local buses on Samosirangkot

Around the island: the ferry landings, Tomok, Ambarita, Simanindo and Pangururan

    Where
There are no taxis on Samosir and no published timetable. The reliable pick-up point is Pelabuhan Sumber, the first landing on the Ajibata boats, where becaks (motorcycle sidecars) and angkots wait for arrivals – locals get off there rather than at Tomok for exactly this reason. Elsewhere you flag a bus or minibus on the main road and tell the driver where you are going; say the destination clearly, and ask a local which vehicle to take rather than guessing from the windscreen board.
    When
No schedule. Vehicles run along the main ring road through the day and thin out badly in the afternoon and on Sundays
    Fare (2024)
Rp 3,000–5,000 per person for short local hops depending on distance (Wikivoyage). Becak fares are negotiated and depend on where you are going
    Takes
Depends entirely on distance; Tomok to Pangururan is over an hour
    Season
    year-round
    Booking
    None, pay the driver

    Scooter hire on Samosirscooter hire

Tuk Tuk and Pangururan, for the ring road around the island

    Where
Every guesthouse and most cafes in Tuk Tuk rent scooters, and the guesthouse you are staying in is the easiest place to arrange one; there is no need to find a shop. Check the brakes before you take it, because the ring road has long descents, and fill up in Tomok or Pangururan since fuel on the quieter west side is sold from bottles at roadside stalls. This is how most visitors see Bukit Holbung, the Tele viewpoint, Sidihoni and the west coast beaches, all of which are effectively out of reach on public transport.
    When
    On demand, all year
    Fare (2025)
Rp 100,000–130,000 per day for an automatic scooter (2025). Bicycles from Tuk Tuk guesthouses are cheaper
    Takes
A full loop of the island is a long day; Tuk Tuk to Pangururan is about 1.5 hours
    Season
year-round; the roads are steep and unlit, so avoid riding after dark
    Booking
Ask at your accommodation on arrival; no deposit system beyond leaving a copy of your passport

Not yet confirmed: The brief says the toll road reaches Parapat. It does not yet. The Kutepat toll currently ends at the Simpang Panei interchange near Pematang Siantar; sections 5 and 6 on to Parapat are not open, and the last stretch is ordinary road.; The brief describes 'Medan and Kualanamu airport buses' to Parapat. The only airport bus confirmed on DAMRI's own subsidised KSPN route list is Silangit airport to Ajibata, plus Pematang Siantar to Ajibata. A direct DAMRI Kualanamu–Parapat service at 10:00, 14:00 and 20:00 for Rp 35,000–50,000 is described by IDN Times in March 2026 but could not be confirmed on damri.co.id, whose airport-service page does not list Parapat. Treat the direct service as unverified.; IDN Times tells readers to book the Ajibata–Ambarita ferry at toba.ferizy.com. That hostname does not resolve. ASDP tickets are sold through the main Ferizy system; kmptaotoba.com is live and sells the Ajibata–Tomok crossing.; KMP Tao Toba's own schedule endpoint returns an empty times array for every date tried, and the operator's site says it sails 24 hours 'as needed', so there is no fixed published timetable for that crossing.; Wikivoyage's January 2018 list of small public boat routes (Onan Runggu, Nainggolan, Mogang, Haranggaol, Sipinggan–Muara) could not be re-confirmed for 2024 or later. Several of the harbours named have been rebuilt since, and the routes may have changed. Ask at the Ajibata harbour office or the Samosir Dinas Perhubungan.; No current fare or frequency was found for the KMP Sumut II crossings to Muara and Balige, which Wikivoyage lists as weekend-only.; Angkot fares on Samosir come from Wikivoyage rather than a dated local source; becak fares are always negotiated..

The field note on Lake Toba and Samosir reads this entry in full, one option at a time, with every source beside it.
