How locals move

Getting around Kaza the local way

Kaza has two ways in and they take turns: the short Manali road over Kunzum La, open only from about late May to mid-October, and the long Shimla road through Kinnaur, which is the only route the rest of the year. Inside Spiti, one HRTC village bus a day leaves Kaza for each hamlet in the late afternoon and comes back the next morning, so the day-trip circuits are done by jeep from the taxi stand or by hitching.

  1. 01
    HRTC bus Manali – Kazaminibus

Manali to Kaza, about 200 km via the Atal Tunnel, Gramphu, Batal and Kunzum La

    Where
Manali bus stand, very early. In Kaza the bus uses the bus stand in Old Kaza, next to the taxi stand. The road is largely untarred between Gramphu and Batal and crosses roughly twenty stream fords, so arrival times slip.
    When
One or two departures a day, around 05:00 and 05:30, arriving Kaza mid to late afternoon
    Fare (2026)
₹400–600; Wikivoyage's 2024 note puts the HRTC fare at about ₹450
    Takes
    9–12 hours
    Season
Roughly mid-May or June to mid-October. Kunzum La opened on 24 May 2025 for 4x4s with full access about two weeks later; in 2026 BRO cleared it in the second half of May. Wikivoyage gives the closing date as 15 October
    Booking
HRTC online at online.hrtchp.com up to sixty days ahead, or at the Manali counter the day before. Many services still run first come, first served

  2. 02
HRTC bus Shimla – Reckong Peo – Kazaminibus

Shimla to Kaza, about 420 km via Narkanda, Rampur, Reckong Peo, Pooh, Nako, Sumdo and Tabo

    Where
Shimla ISBT for the first leg; almost everyone breaks the journey at Reckong Peo and catches the Kaza bus from the Peo bus stand the next morning. There is also a through Shimla–Kaza bus in summer. This is the route that stays open in winter, and it is the one that crosses the Malling Nullah landslide zone, where passengers sometimes have to walk across the slide and change to a second bus on the far side.
    When
Reckong Peo to Kaza daily, departing about 05:30 and 07:30 and reaching Kaza mid-afternoon. In winter only one bus runs each way between Reckong Peo and Kaza, leaving early in the morning
    Fare (2026)
Shimla to Reckong Peo ₹430–650; Reckong Peo to Kaza ₹250–550 depending on the source and the year, with ₹550 quoted for 2026. Tabo to Kaza ₹88
    Takes
Reckong Peo to Kaza 9–10 hours; Shimla to Kaza two days
    Season
Open in principle all year. Heavy snow in January and February and landslides at Malling Nullah can shut it for days
    Booking
online.hrtchp.com or the Reckong Peo counter. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit, issued in person at the SDM office in Reckong Peo or the ADC office in New Kaza, roughly twenty minutes' walk from the centre; it is checked at the Dubling and Sumdo posts. Indian nationals do not need one

  4. 04
    Kaza village busesminibus

Kaza to Kibber and Chicham, Komic, Langza, Demul, Lhalung, Losar, Mud in the Pin valley, Chango, and Tabo on any Sumdo or Shimla bus

    Where
Kaza bus stand in Old Kaza. The board there is the only timetable. These are one-bus-a-day village services shaped around villagers coming to Kaza for the day, so almost all of them leave Kaza in the afternoon and return the next morning between about 06:00 and 08:00. That means no day trips by bus; you sleep in the village. For Tabo you do not need a dedicated bus, just flag any Sumdo, Nako, Reckong Peo or Shimla bus.
    When
One a day per village. Chango about 14:30, Mud in the Pin valley about 16:00, Losar about 16:30, and Kibber, Chicham, Komic, Langza, Demul and Lhalung between 16:00 and 17:15. Komic has been listed as Tuesdays and Saturdays only
    Fare (2026)
Small. Komic about ₹30 and Mud about ₹40 on an older listing; Tabo to Kaza ₹88. HRTC prices ordinary buses at roughly 1.75 times the kilometres, which is a usable estimate
    Takes
30 minutes to Key; about 1 hour to Kibber; 2–3 hours to Mud or Losar
    Season
Thinner in winter and cut entirely after heavy snow, especially the Losar and Chicham runs
    Booking
    none, pay the conductor

  5. 05
Jeeps from the Kaza taxi standshare jeep

The usual circuits: Key, Kibber and Chicham bridge; Langza, Hikkim and Komic; Dhankar and Lhalung; Pin valley to Mud

    Where
The taxi stand in Old Kaza, beside the bus stand, has a booth with the fixed rates for each route posted on it. Homestays and guesthouses will put you in a jeep with other guests; asking the night before is how most people fill a vehicle, since the rate is per jeep rather than per seat.
    When
Leaves when full, usually in the morning. No fixed schedule
    Fare (2024)
About ₹2,500 for a shared circuit in 2024. A full-day hire for local sightseeing runs roughly ₹3,000–5,000. In winter the going rate is about ₹25–40 per kilometre or more, cheaper than the tourist season
    Takes
Half a day for the Key–Kibber loop, a full day for the Langza–Hikkim–Komic circuit
    Season
Year-round for Key and Kibber; Chicham, Komic and the Pin valley depend on snow
    Booking
At the booth or through your homestay the evening before

  6. 06
    Lifts between Spiti villageshitchhiking

Kaza to Key, Kibber, Langza, Tabo, Losar and back

    Where
Stand on the road out of Kaza in the direction you want and wave down anything passing. Because the village buses only run once a day and in the wrong direction for a day trip, hitching is how travellers without a jeep get back to Kaza in the afternoon. Traffic is heaviest on the Kaza–Tabo road and thinnest on the Komic and Demul spurs.
    When
Traffic-dependent; steady in the June to September season, sparse in winter
    Fare (2024)
Usually free between villages, though offering something for fuel is normal
    Takes
    Unpredictable
    Season
Year-round on the Tabo road; very thin once the Manali road shuts
    Booking
    none

Ecosphere jeep and yak safaristour package

Kaza out to Demul, Lhalung, Komic, Langza and the Pin valley, including homestay circuits

    Where
Ecosphere's office in Kaza, or info@spitiecosphere.com before you arrive. They work with village homestay networks and arrange transport as part of the trip, which is the practical way to reach villages the single daily bus makes awkward.
    When
    On request, arranged in Kaza
    Fare
    not confirmed
    Takes
    A day to several days
    Season
Mainly May to October; some winter snow-leopard trips
    Booking
By email in advance or at the Kaza office

Not yet confirmed: No official HRTC timetable page listing the Kaza village buses was found. Every published set of village departure times traces back to blog posts, the most detailed of which is from 2018. The board at Kaza bus stand is the only reliable source and should be read on arrival.; Village bus fares to Kibber, Langza, Chicham and Losar are not published anywhere that could be verified. Only Tabo–Kaza (₹88), Komic (about ₹30) and Mud (about ₹40) were found, and the last two are old.; The Kaza taxi stand's posted rate card is not reproduced online. The ₹2,500 shared figure is a 2024 Wikivoyage note, not a per-route rate. Photograph the booth board in Kaza to get the real list.; Sources disagree on the Reckong Peo – Kaza fare, from ₹250 to ₹600. HRTC's own booking site (online.hrtchp.com) would give the current figure but its route search could not be read.; Direct Shimla – Kaza summer buses are mentioned by several sources but no departure time or fare was confirmed.; Kunzum La opening and closing dates move by several weeks each year. Check BRO and Lahaul and Spiti district notices (hplahaulspiti.nic.in) before planning May, June or October travel..
