Kariakoo
Kariakoo is an administrative ward of the Ilala Municipal Council of the Dar es Salaam Region in Tanzania.
Jangwani ward and Mchafukoge ward form the ward's northern and eastern boundaries. The Gerezani and Mchikichini wards border the ward to the south and west respectively. The ward is the home of Simba Sports Club. The name is derived from the swahilization of the British colonial occupation's "Carrier Corps", that used to be based in the area. Today, Kariakoo is mainly known for its large market that spans several city blocks. According to the 2022 census, the ward has a population of 10,246.
Getting around Kariakoo the local way
- Get inLook for those marked POSTA, which is the main Post Office in the city centre next to the ferry terminal.
- Get inHitchhiking is uncommon, dangerous, and most drivers will expect some form of payment from foreigners.
- Get inThe BRT runs on dedicated lanes, bypassing traffic jams that slow down regular cars and minibuses (dala-dala).
- Get inPhase 1: Connects Kimara in the west to Kivukoni Ferry and Morocco, passing through the city centre (Posta).
- Get inTravellers can take a short taxi, ride-hail, or dala-dala from the airport to connect to the nearest BRT stops along Nyerere Road, then continue by BRT into the city centre or other destinations.
- Get aroundAs of 2022, Uber only operates bodabodas (motorcycles) and tuk-tuks.
- Get aroundThe most common form of public transportation in Dar are minibuses called "daladalas".
- Get aroundThese minibuses follow specific routes with the start and ending point clearly marked on the front of the vehicle.
