Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island, known colloquially as KI, is Australia's third-largest island, after Tasmania and Melville Island.
It lies in the state of South Australia, 112 km (70 mi) southwest of Adelaide. Its closest point to the mainland is Snapper Point in Backstairs Passage, which is 13.5 km (8.4 mi) from the Fleurieu Peninsula.
Getting to Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island is an agriculture quarantine zone, meaning that the transport of plants, animals and some food items from the mainland to Kangaroo Island is prohibited. See SeaLink's website for more information on what you can and cannot bring to Kangaroo Island. There are two ways to get to Kangaroo Island: Ferries operated by Sealink travel between Cape Jervis on the mainland, and Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island.
- 01Kingscote Airport
Worth seeing
You will see wildlife on Kangaroo Island, both in the national parks and reserves, and just in the farmland surrounding the roads. Most wildlife are most active at dawn and dusk. Unfortunately, visitors will also come across wildlife as roadkill all over the island.
- 01Penneshaw Penguin Centre
Guided tour to see the penguins in Penneshaw.
- 02Seal Bay Conservation Park
Australian sea lions are at Seal Bay Conservation Park.
- 03Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park
Things to do
Swim. Spring and Autumn are too cold to swim on KI, and the swimming season is really just the summer school holidays. The best swimming beaches tend to be on the north side of the island, the south side offering less sand, and more waves crashing into cliffs. Dive. The clear blue waters around Kangaroo Island make it one of the best spots for scuba diving in temperate waters.
Where to eat
Restaurants and cafes are limited to Penneshaw, Parndana, American River and Kingscote and some small cafes along the way on the south coast.
- 01Bella Cafe & Pizza Bar
Perhaps KI's only pizza bar with a monopoly on pizza on the entire island – it also has a decent range of what you'd find in an ordinary Australian cafe.
- 02Cactus Kangaroo Island
54 Dauncey St, Kingscote, hello@cactuski.com.au.
- 03The Lighthouse Cafe
27 Dauncey St, Kingscote,.
Getting around Kangaroo Island the local way
Nearly everyone arrives by the SeaLink vehicle ferry from Cape Jervis or a QantasLink flight into Kingscote, and once there almost all movement is by car: there is no taxi anywhere on the island and only a single twice-daily bus links the three main towns, so anyone without a car depends on transfer operators or a coach tour.

Not yet confirmed: The brief describes the Adelaide coach and the ferry as sold as one ticket. That is not what the current operator documents show: SeaLink's own fares page says a separate operator, LinkSA (Route 1259), runs the Adelaide to Cape Jervis leg as a public bus, and Peninsula Coaches' own timetable PDF marks the Adelaide connection with an asterisk reading 'Some services can connect to Adelaide with Route 1259 operated by LinkSA service provider' - language describing a timed connection between three separately bookable services (LinkSA bus, SeaLink ferry, Peninsula Coaches island shuttle), not a single through fare. This may have been true under an older SeaLink-operated coach service referenced in the Wikivoyage article, which appears stale on this point.; The brief states there is no public bus at all on the island. That is no longer accurate: Peninsula Coaches has run a government-contracted public route (1260) between Penneshaw, American River and Kingscote since 1 October 2023, twice daily, cash or card fare $22.60 adult one way. It is still true that nowhere else on the island (Flinders Chase, Vivonne Bay, Seal Bay, the beaches) has any public transport at all, so a car, transfer or tour remains the only way to reach the sights.; LinkSA's site is linksa.com.au, not linksa.net.au (that domain redirects). A cross-check reached it and found the Route 1259 page confirming the service but publishing no fare; a later attempt from here got HTTP 403, so treat the site as intermittently reachable. Either way no online fare for Route 1259 was found. Call LinkSA on 08 8555 2500, the number SeaLink's own timetable page gives for its timetable and fare information.; QantasLink's Adelaide-Kingscote frequency and current fare were not fetched; qantas.com blocked a direct route-page fetch. Ask Qantas directly or check a fare aggregator.; Exact current insurance terms and any unsealed-road restriction written into Budget's or Hertz's Kangaroo Island rental agreements could not be confirmed: both operators' Australian sites render their content by JavaScript, which a plain fetch could not read. The wildlife-collision and 'more complicated' insurance language here is Wikivoyage's characterisation, not a quoted operator clause.; Two different Adelaide coaches run to Cape Jervis and an earlier draft here treated one as stale text. SeaLink's timetable page resolves it explicitly: 'The SeaLink Coach Connection between Adelaide and Cape Jervis is continuing to operate', departing Adelaide Central Bus Station at 06:45 for the 09:00 ferry and leaving Cape Jervis at 20:30 after the 19:30 sailing, while 'The Public Coach Service between Adelaide and Cape Jervis is now operated by LinkSA' under a Department for Infrastructure and Transport contract from 1 October 2023. The LinkSA Route 1259 option above is the public bus; SeaLink's own coach is a separate service and is not given its own option here because no standalone fare for it was found on the page.; Current road and campground closure status inside Flinders Chase National Park post-bushfire could not be confirmed: parks.sa.gov.au renders its closures page by JavaScript and returned only navigation text to a plain fetch. Check the Parks SA closures and alerts page or call the visitor centre before planning a Flinders Chase visit.; No taxi service exists on the island (stated by Wikivoyage as of this research and not contradicted by any operator source found), which is why private transfer operators and hire cars carry so much of the load here..
The field note on Kangaroo Island reads this entry in full, one option at a time, with every source beside it.
