Where to eat

Most of the guest houses provide simple meals. Watch the sunset over the Mekong river from a riverside restaurant. The restaurant next door to the Gibbon Experience office is home to the expat crowd in town. It has a nice garden restaurant and terrace overlooking the Mekong. Daauw Home (go up the steps to the temple and take the first dirt road on the left, you'll see it on the right side).

How locals move

Getting around Huay Xai the local way

Huay Xai is a border town whose border is 10 km away: the Fourth Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge cannot be walked, so everyone buys a 20–30 baht seat on the shuttle between the two immigration halls and then pays again for a tuk-tuk into town. From town three things leave – the Mekong slow boat to Pakbeng and Luang Prabang from a landing 3 km north, the speedboats from a separate pier 4 km south, and express vans from Phetaloun bus station 5 km south to Luang Namtha, Boten and the Nateuy railhead. Most foreigners are here for the Gibbon Experience, whose office in the centre is the town's real transport hub.

  1. 01
Fourth Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge shuttle, Chiang Khong to Huay Xaiborder crossing

Thai immigration near Ban Don Maha Wan, about 20.2157, 100.4353, across 2.48 km of bridge to Lao immigration near Ban Don, about 20.2168, 100.4613

    Where
Neither checkpoint is in a town. Both are roughly 10 km south of Chiang Khong and of Huay Xai, so a bus that says Chiang Khong will put you in Chiang Khong, not at the border; a tuk-tuk from the town or from the highway junction to Thai immigration is 50–100 THB. Stamp out of Thailand first, then buy the shuttle ticket at the window past passport control – you may not walk or cycle across. The buses are full-size with cargo bays and will carry a bicycle for about 100 baht extra; a motorbike can sometimes be ridden over with a police escort for about 500 baht. The bus waits until it has enough passengers. On the Lao side there is a further small entry charge of 40 THB or 10,000 kip collected as you leave the border post, and a horde of tuk-tuk drivers outside. A Lao eVisa is accepted here – Friendship Bridge IV is one of only nine Lao ports that take it – but visa on arrival is the usual route and wants clean US dollar notes.
    When
Through the day whenever the bus fills; the checkpoint is commonly listed as open 06:00–22:00, but the Gibbon Experience, whose guests cross daily, states 08:00–20:00 and the practical last shuttle is earlier still
    Fare (2026)
Shuttle about 20 THB in normal hours, 25–40 THB at night, at weekends and outside office hours. Bicycle about 100 THB extra, motorbike with police escort about 500 THB. Lao entry charge 40 THB or 10,000 kip. Visa on arrival US$30–40 by nationality, with about US$1 more outside office hours and at weekends.
    Takes
A few minutes on the bridge; one to three hours for the whole crossing including both immigration halls and the visa queue
    Season
Year-round. Weekends, Thai and Lao public holidays and the peak months lengthen both queues.
    Booking
None. Pay cash at the ticket window after Thai exit control. Carry small Thai baht, clean US dollars and some kip; cards are not usable and border ATMs are unreliable.

Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai buses to Chiang Khongbus

Chiang Rai Bus Terminal 1 or Chiang Mai Arcade Bus Terminal 3 to Chiang Khong town or the highway junction before it

    Where
From Chiang Rai the workhorses are the big red local buses, which start at the fresh market in Chiang Khong in the other direction and end at Chiang Rai's central Terminal 1. They run two routes, one via Phaya Mengrai and one via Wiang Kaen and Thoeng, so the journey is two to three hours depending on which you board. Tell the conductor you want the border rather than the town: you are charged more but set down at the highway junction, from where a tuk-tuk to immigration is only about 50 baht, instead of having to backtrack from the town centre. From Chiang Mai, Green Bus from Arcade Terminal 3 is the standard; book a few days ahead in season because it sells out. Green Bus also runs northbound from Chiang Khong town in the morning, and Sombat Tour has had a late-afternoon coach from Chiang Khong to Bangkok.
    When
Chiang Rai to Chiang Khong roughly hourly, departures from early morning to mid or late afternoon; the Chiang Khong to Chiang Rai buses run hourly 08:00–15:00. Green Bus Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong around 08:30 and 09:30; Chiang Khong to Chiang Mai around 07:15, 09:45 and 10:30.
    Fare (2026)
Chiang Rai to Chiang Khong 65–90 THB on the local bus, about 140 THB if you ask for the border; shared minivans 90–150 THB. Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong about 350 THB on the slower service and 500–550 THB on the VIP; Chiang Khong to Chiang Mai 311 THB and 476 THB on the two Green Bus departures.
    Takes
Chiang Rai to Chiang Khong 1h 30m to 2h 30m, longer on the Thoeng routing. Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong about 5h 40m to 7h.
    Season
Year-round; the Chiang Mai buses fill in the November to February high season
    Booking
Buy at Chiang Rai Terminal 1 or Chiang Mai Arcade Terminal 3 on the day for the local buses; the Gibbon Experience points guests at fairfair.co.th for the Green Bus.

  3. 03
Huay Xai tuk-tuks, border to town and town to the pierstuk tuk

Lao immigration at the bridge to central Huay Xai, about 10 km; and from town out to the slow boat landing, the speedboat pier, Phetaloun bus station and the fresh market

    Where
Drivers wait immediately outside the Lao border post and again outside Phetaloun bus station. Nothing in Huay Xai is walkable from the checkpoint: the bus station is several kilometres from the centre and the two boat piers are in opposite directions from it. Agree the fare before you get in and say whether you want the centre, the slow boat landing north of town or the speedboat pier south of it, because they are not the same trip. Drivers at the border quote in baht and quote high to solo arrivals; sharing with others off the same shuttle is the normal way to get the price down. A tuk-tuk or songthaew can also be chartered out to Phetaloun. Ignore anyone at the border or bus station selling you a slow boat ticket – the office at the landing sells it cheaper.
    When
Meets every shuttle bus and every boat arrival during daylight; thin after dark
    Fare (2026)
Border to central Huay Xai 100–400 THB quoted per vehicle, or roughly 25,000–30,000 kip, about 50–60 THB, for a shared seat. On the Thai side, Chiang Khong town or the junction to Thai immigration 50–100 THB.
    Takes
About 20 to 30 minutes from the border to the centre
    Season
    Year-round
    Booking
None; pay the driver. Kip and baht both accepted, cards are not.

  4. 04
Mekong slow boat, Huay Xai to Pakbeng and Luang Prabangboat

Boat landing about 3 km north of central Huay Xai, near 20.2851, 100.4066, downriver to Pakbeng and on the second day to the landing outside Luang Prabang

    Where
The landing is at the north end of town, not at the bridge and not where agents in the centre may imply; a ticket office stands beside it, and there is a mapped 'Official slow boat ticket agent' building at about 20.2850, 100.4072. Buy there with your passport on the morning of travel. Hobo Maps' survey note on the pier, rechecked in June 2024, is explicit that the landing is still northwest of Huay Xai and has not moved, which is worth knowing because touts at the border say otherwise. Buy single-day tickets rather than a through two-day ticket: the boats take no seat reservations and are never sold out, so a through ticket buys you nothing and locks you into one operator. The boats are long, narrow family craft with a truck engine at the back, a snack bar and a toilet; bring a cushion. Downriver boats carry roughly four times the load of the upriver ones. Arrive early in Pakbeng if you want a choice of room – passengers race off the boat for them. No slow boats run upriver from Huay Xai.
    When
Daily in the downriver direction. Departure time is not settled between sources: Hobo Maps gives about 11:00, the Gibbon Experience tells guests 09:00, and a Huay Xai agent board photographed in January 2025 says 08:30. Treat 08:30 as the time to be there.
    Fare (2025)
200,000 kip per leg for foreigners, so about 400,000 kip for the two days; 50,000 kip extra to carry a bicycle. A Huay Xai agency board quoted 440,000 kip for the two-day trip with hotel pickup included.
    Takes
About 7 hours to Pakbeng on day one, about the same again to Luang Prabang on day two
    Season
Year-round, daily in both directions as of 2026. Water level governs how the boat runs rather than whether it runs; in the dry season you can watch gold panning from the deck.
    Booking
At the office beside the landing on the day, passport required. There is no reason to buy through an agent except to get the hotel transfer.

  5. 05
Nagi of Mekong two-day cruise, Huay Xai to Luang Prabangtour package

Pick-up from a hotel in Chiang Khong or Huay Xai to the boat, down the Mekong with a night in Pakbeng, then Pak Ou cave and the Luang Prabang pier

    Where
A 40-seat mid-range boat that deliberately sails with empty seats, as against the packed public express boats. It is run from the Thai side and the office address is given as Houay Xai Immigration, Chiang Khong. Booking is by email to adisak.star@gmail.com or WhatsApp +66 95 507 3264, not through a website form, and they answer within a day. The package includes the transfer to the pier from either side of the river, luggage handling, help with the visa on arrival, lunch and refreshments both days, the Pak Ou cave stop and the transfer from the Luang Prabang pier to your hotel. Going upriver, the last leg reaches Huay Xai about 16:30 and they hand you the bridge bus ticket to cross to Chiang Khong the same evening, which is the part independent travellers usually get wrong.
    When
Downriver from Huay Xai on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday. Upriver from Luang Prabang on Monday and Thursday, subject to a minimum.
    Fare (2026)
Cruise only, without the Pakbeng hotel, 4,900 THB or US$140 or €130 per person. With a standard air-conditioned Pakbeng hotel and breakfast US$160 or €150, single supplement US$20. With Le Grand Pak Beng or Sanctuary Pak Beng Lodge US$195, with a summer rate of US$165 at the Sanctuary from 20 April to 30 September 2026.
    Takes
Two days with one night in Pakbeng
    Season
Year-round. The Sanctuary summer promotion runs 20 April to 30 September.
    Booking
Email adisak.star@gmail.com or WhatsApp +66 95 507 3264; reply within 24 hours. Visa forms are sent to you before the cruise day.

  6. 06
Mekong speedboats, Huay Xai to Pakbeng and Luang Prabangspeedboat

Speedboat pier about 4 km south of central Huay Xai, near 20.2496, 100.4269, downriver only

    Where
A different pier from the slow boat, in the opposite direction from town, so tell the tuk-tuk driver which one you want. Most people go straight to the pier rather than buying through an agency. If you continue to Luang Prabang the same day you change into a different speedboat at Pakbeng after a long lunch stop, because the operators group Pakbeng passengers with those arriving from both directions; Pakbeng departures are often not until about 14:00. The boats are open, very loud and very fast, crash helmets and ear protection are handed out, and there is effectively no luggage space, so a bicycle is not realistic. There are no longer any public speedboats running upriver from Huay Xai. Weigh the time saved against the record on this stretch of river: a public Pakbeng to Luang Prabang boat with 147 people aboard struck rocks and sank near Pak Ou cave on 18 December 2025, and a passenger told the Laotian Times there were only a few life jackets on board.
    When
Daily if enough passengers turn up; they do not run half empty
    Fare
Not confirmed. A 2022 OpenStreetMap survey labels the Huay Xai pier with a figure of 9 million kip to Luang Prabang, which reads as a whole-boat charter rather than a seat, and no operator publishes a per-seat price. Ask at the pier.
    Takes
About 3 hours to Pakbeng, about 3 hours more from Pakbeng to Luang Prabang, plus checkpoint and disembarkation stops
    Season
    Year-round if there are passengers
    Booking
At the pier on the day

Minivan to Nateuy station and the Laos–China Railwaycombined transfer

Huay Xai to Nateuy station in Luang Namtha province, 210 km, then the railway south to Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and Vientiane or north to Boten and China

    Where
Huay Xai has no railway. The nearest station is Nateuy, about five hours away by road, and the minivans are timed to the trains rather than the other way round. Tickets for the van can only be bought at the counter in the station car park at the Nateuy end, or from the driver; from October to March buy yours the moment you step off the train, because demand outruns the vans. In the Huay Xai direction, agencies in the centre sell a through ticket that covers the van and the train seat and picks you up from your hotel, which is the only way to get a rail seat without going to Nateuy yourself. Train tickets in Laos only go on sale two or three days before departure. Note that the widely used seat61 timetable lists Muang Xai and Boten but not Nateuy, so work from the times the local agencies quote.
    When
Vans meet every train arrival at Nateuy. From Huay Xai the station board shows departures in the 07:00–09:00 and 09:00–12:00 windows. Trains from Nateuy to Luang Prabang leave about 14:26 on the ordinary service and 17:32 on the fast one.
    Fare (2026)
Van alone 395,000 kip on the Bokeo station board, or 4,800,000 kip to charter the whole van; the Gibbon Experience quotes about 260,000 kip for the same seat. A Huay Xai agency charged 350,000 kip for transport to the station, or 620,000 kip through to Luang Prabang, 720,000 to Vang Vieng and 910,000 to Vientiane including the train. Rail fares on the Vientiane to Luang Prabang stretch are 975,000 kip business, 522,000 first and 330,000 second on the fast C trains, and 579,000 soft sleeper or 234,000 hard seat on the slow K11 and K12.
    Takes
5 hours Huay Xai to Nateuy; Nateuy to Luang Prabang about 2 hours, to Vientiane about 3 to 5 hours depending on the train
    Season
Year-round. October to March is when the vans at Nateuy sell out first.
    Booking
Van from the counter in the Nateuy station car park or from the driver; through tickets from agencies near the Gibbon Experience office in Huay Xai. Rail seats go on sale two to three days ahead.

Phetaloun bus station, Luang Namtha, Oudomxay, Boten and Luang Prabangbus

Phetaloun bus station about 5 km south of central Huay Xai, near 20.2501, 100.4435, on Route 3 east and Route 13 south

    Where
Huay Xai's long-distance terminal has moved: it is now Phetaloun, out on the southern edge of town, and the old Keo Champa station in the centre has been left to Bokeo province local services. Charter a tuk-tuk or songthaew out there. The board at Phetaloun is in Lao, Chinese and English and lists express vans with both a per-seat fare and a whole-vehicle charter price. Departures leave on time and are not cancelled. Buying at the station is markedly cheaper than the agency boards in town, which bundle a hotel pickup and sometimes a sandwich. The Vientiane bus is a night service and a long one; the Gibbon Experience advises against it in the rainy season because it breaks down or arrives late.
    When
Luang Namtha vans run in a 07:00–17:00 window, quoted elsewhere as 09:00, 12:00 and 15:00 departures; Muang Sing and Boten vans go 07:00–09:00; Tonpheung runs 07:00–17:00. The night bus to Luang Prabang leaves about 17:30 and the one continuing to Luang Namtha about 17:00.
    Fare (2026)
From the station board: Luang Namtha 290,000 kip, Nateuy 395,000, Muang Sing 550,000, Boten 550,000, Tonpheung 180,000; charter 1,500,000 kip to Tonpheung rising to 5,500,000 to Boten. Agency prices with hotel pickup: Luang Namtha 250,000, Oudomxay 320,000, Pakmong 420,000, Luang Prabang 470,000, Vang Vieng 570,000, Vientiane 620,000. The Luang Prabang sleeper is quoted separately at 430,000 kip and the night bus that reaches Luang Namtha at about 320,000 kip.
    Takes
Luang Namtha about 3h 30m to 4h, Oudomxay about 7h, Luang Prabang about 12h, Vientiane about 22 to 24h
    Season
Year-round. Northern Laos floods in August and September; in August 2026 flooding in Luang Namtha province cut roads and power across the north.
    Booking
At the station on the day, or from agencies in central Huay Xai for a higher price that includes the transfer out to Phetaloun.

Bokeo province songthaews from the Huay Xai fresh marketshared pickup

Mouang Keo fresh market in central Huay Xai, about 20.2718, 100.4174, north to Tonpheung and the Golden Triangle, and the old Keo Champa station for Paktha, Pha Oudom and Muang Meung

    Where
The blue bench-seat pickups for Tonpheung stand at the fresh market in the middle of town, not at Phetaloun. They leave when full and almost always in the morning, and some carry on past Tonpheung to the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone casino strip and occasionally as far as Ban Mom. This is the cheap way to reach Bokeo International Airport, which is in Tonpheung district. For the rest of the province the old Keo Champa station in the centre now handles local runs, and its painted board gives a flat per-person price to each district town, with four mobile numbers on it for checking.
    When
Depart when full, mostly mornings; the express van to Tonpheung runs on a 07:00–17:00 window from Phetaloun
    Fare (2026)
Local bus station board: Tonpheung 70,000 kip, Pha Oudom 70,000 kip, Paktha 40,000 kip, Muang Meung 100,000 kip. The Phetaloun express van to Tonpheung is 180,000 kip a seat or 1,500,000 kip to charter.
    Takes
Tonpheung about 1 hour 30m over 65 km; the district towns take longer on rough road
    Season
Year-round; rough unsealed sections in the province suffer in the July to September rains
    Booking
None; turn up at the market or the local station and pay on board

Gibbon Experience transport into the Nam Kan National Parktour package

Gibbon Experience office in central Huay Xai by 4x4 to the park edge, then on foot and by zipline to the treehouses

    Where
The office is in the middle of Huay Xai and is the reason most foreigners are in the town at all; transport to and from the park is included in the tour price, so there is nothing separate to arrange. Groups leave soon after 08:00 and return between 15:00 and 16:00 on the last day. You cannot cross the border on the morning your tour starts, so you must be in Huay Xai the night before. There is a video-monitored luggage store at the office. They will also sell you the onward leg: a 14:30 or 15:30 pickup at the office that combines a tuk-tuk to the border, the bridge bus and a shared minivan, reaching Chiang Rai about 18:00 or 19:00 or Chiang Mai about 21:30. Under heavy rain the 4x4 cannot reach the end of the track and the walk in can take up to five hours.
    When
Departures on the published trip calendar; Classic, Giant, Escape and Honeymoon run as separate programmes
    Fare (2026)
About €110 per person per day with seasonal variation, roughly 50 percent off for children under 12. The Vientiane taxi leg for those flying in is quoted separately at up to 1.5 to 1.8 million kip.
    Takes
Two or three days including one or two nights in the treehouses; the access walk is one to two hours in the dry season
    Season
Runs year-round but the Classic tours are paused from 14 August to 15 September, and tours in August and September can be cancelled outright for road conditions. From July to September the trek is longer and muddier and the canopy time shorter.
    Booking
Only through the tour page on gibbonexperience.org; the contact form is not for bookings

Bokeo International Airport at Tonpheungscheduled flight

Bokeo (BOR), in Tonpheung district beside the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone, about an hour's drive north of Huay Xai, to Vientiane

    Where
This is not the old airstrip on the edge of Huay Xai. Bokeo International opened on 5 February 2024 on a 300-hectare site at Tonpheung, and its opening was overshadowed when Lao Airlines suspended the Vientiane route the same week. Lao Airlines now flies it daily again with an ATR 72. Because the airport is an hour from town and taxi supply there is thin, arrange the transfer in advance rather than assuming a car will be waiting; the Gibbon Experience hands out two local drivers' numbers, Yortdoi on +856 20 56 569 446 and Oudomphone on +856 20 2829 6945. The cheap alternative is the blue songthaew from the Huay Xai fresh market to Tonpheung.
    When
Lao Airlines QV901 leaves Vientiane 15:20 and QV902 leaves Bokeo 17:00, daily, on the summer schedule to 24 October 2026; on the winter schedule from 25 October they move to 15:00 and 16:40. Lane Xang Airways also serves the route.
    Fare (2024)
Not published on the airline's own schedule. Lane Xang Airways was quoted at about US$200 each way and Lao Airlines at 1,700,000 kip each way when the route launched in 2024. Taxi to or from the airport up to 1,500,000 to 1,800,000 kip.
    Takes
About 50 minutes to Vientiane, plus an hour on the road each way
    Season
    Year-round

  12. 12
Wet season on the upper Mekong and the Bokeo roadsservice status

The Huay Xai to Pakbeng and Luang Prabang river route, and the roads east to Luang Namtha and Oudomxay

    Where
The boats are the resilient part and the roads are the fragile part, which is the opposite of what most people expect. Slow boats run every day in both directions through the year; what changes with the water is the load and the hazards, not the timetable. High water in the July to September rains speeds the downriver run and slows the upriver one, and the buoyage that marks rocks gets knocked out by passing boats – the Ministry of Public Works and Transport blamed damaged buoyage when a Pakbeng boat struck rocks and sank in December 2025. In the dry months the river drops far enough that gold panners work the banks in view of the deck. On land, the August and September rains are what cancel things: the Gibbon Experience suspends its Classic tours from 14 August to 15 September and warns that tours in those months can be called off for road conditions, and it advises against the Luang Prabang night bus in the rainy season because it breaks down or arrives too late. Flooding across northern Laos in August 2026 cut roads and power in neighbouring Luang Namtha province.
    When
Wet season roughly May to October, with the worst road disruption in August and September; the dry, low-water months are roughly December to April
    Fare
No charge; this is a condition, not a service
    Takes
    Whole-season, not a single closure
    Season
May to October wet, December to April dry
    Booking

Not yet confirmed: The slow boat departure time from Huay Xai is not settled: Hobo Maps says about 11:00, the Gibbon Experience tells guests 09:00, and a January 2025 agency board says 08:30. Ask at the ticket office by the landing the evening before.; No per-seat speedboat fare from Huay Xai to Pakbeng or Luang Prabang could be confirmed from any operator. The only figure found is an OpenStreetMap label of 9 million kip to Luang Prabang, which reads as a whole-boat charter. Ask at the speedboat pier 4 km south of town.; No operator or authority publishes the Friendship Bridge IV shuttle timetable or its official overtime tariff. The 20 THB standard and 25–40 THB out-of-hours figures come from recent traveller accounts and from Hobo Maps, not from a Thai or Lao government page; the Thai Transport Co. site could not be reached from here and would be the place to check.; Lao Skyway's own schedule API at https://api.laoskyway.com/public/schedules returned an empty array for Vientiane routes and then began rejecting requests, so it could not be confirmed whether Lao Skyway currently flies Bokeo or only lists it as a city pair. Lane Xang Airways' website was unreachable and its current Bokeo fare is unknown.; Bokeo province authorities were reported to have allocated close to 30 billion kip for an 18-month modernisation of the Huay Xai checkpoint. The primary Lao source for that was not traced, and travellers in 2027 may find the border post a building site.; Whether bicycles can still be carried on the bridge shuttle for 100 baht, and whether the motorbike police escort at 500 baht is still offered, rests on a single survey and should be checked at the ticket window.; No source gives a current price for hiring a bicycle or a scooter in Huay Xai itself; Hobo Maps reports finding nowhere in town that rents bicycles..

The field note on Huay Xai reads this entry in full, one option at a time, with every source beside it.
