It is located 1 mile (1.6 km) north-east of Chipping Ongar, 8 miles (13 km) west of Chelmsford and 6 miles (10 km) north-west of Brentwood. As well as the village of High Ongar itself the parish also covers extensive rural areas, including the smaller settlements of Norton Mandeville and Norton Heath. At the 2021 census the parish had a population of 1,427.
